Bridgegate witness says Cuomo and Christie discussed cover story

GWB

By Ryan Hutchins

10/04/16 12:03 PM EDT

NEWARK, N.J. — Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie personally discussed how to handle the fallout from the George Washington Bridge lane closures, even agreeing to release a report covering up the incident, according to the admitted mastermind of the political revenge scheme.

Cuomo’s administration — referred to in testimony as “Albany” — told the top official at the bistate Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to “lay off” Christie following the incident, former Port official David Wildstein testified here in U.S. District Court.

Last Night’s Ridgewood Planing Board Meeting Fireworks and the Recap

Ridgewood Planning board
Dear Friends,
Many of you have been asking how the Planning Board meeting went last night, especially given the VP debate going on at the same time. So, pasted at the bottom of this email is the speech I gave.
Before I get to it, I think it’s important to note that Planning Board Chairman Richard Joel attempted to stonewall my presentation of this speech. At the only public comment during the meeting, it was explained that only items not on the agenda would be permitted to be discussed. When I stood at the podium and asked whether I would be able to speak during the point in the agenda, when a statement would be made regarding the filed resident complaint (dated Sept. 16th), Chairman Joel said he hadn’t yet decided if I would be allowed.
It was only after several other residents, Mayor Knudsen and members of the Planning Board spoke out to allow my speech did Chairman Joel finally permit it.
This brings into question Chairman Joel’s stewardship as to whose interests he really represents.
While I do not have the exact text here, the statement that was read aloud by Chairman Joel regarding the resident complaint basically says that more consideration needs to be done before the Planning Board can adequately address it. My concern is that this is a delay tactic and that under Chairman Joel’s guidance, the Complaint will not be put on the agenda to be voted on. I hope I am wrong about this. Ridgewood residents deserve a hearing to investigate what ‘mistakes’ happened with regard to the High Density housing issue.
So, here’s the speech I gave along with a video of its presentation:
Mayor Knudsen and Members of the Planning Board, as you know, it is your duty to represent the interests of the residents of Ridgewood.
As such, you have an obligation to put the brakes on the current High Density site plan review and begin an investigation based on the complaint that was signed by myself and other residents, dated September 16th. Within your bylaws, you have the ability to do so and to investigate the conflicts of interest and mistakes alleged in our motion. If you find they are true, you can then seek to overturn a vote that may have been wrongly attained and created so much discord in Ridgewood.
These are some of the questions we demand investigated:
1) Why didn’t our former deputy mayor and planning board member, recuse himself from all the Planning Board work sessions leading up to the formal hearings? The same conflict existed then. How could he advocate so fervently for the ordinances during work sessions and then suddenly find a conflict of interest when the hearings started.
2) Why was an unvetted/unsubstantiated letter from the housing advocacy group, Fair Share Housing Center written into the record as fact/evidence by the former Planning Board Attorney for the High Density Housing vote in June, 2015? Under the Planning Board attorney’s own guidelines, it was clearly hearsay. And why wasn’t the public or Planning Board members given the opportunity to question the Fair Share Housing rep, Kevin Walsh?
3) Contiguous to the timing of the filing of our Motion of Complaint, one of your members who is mentioned as having a conflict of interest in the complaint, strangely resigned his planning board seat. Is this just a mere coincidence? Why did he wait so long and step down long after the vote?
Members of the Planning Board, your attorney may advise you to bundle this complaint with the pending lawsuit by RCRD. However, to do so would be a disservice to the residents of the village as this complaint is completely separate from that lawsuit and should be handled as such. This is not, at this time, a legal matter. It is a matter of proper and fair governing process for Ridgewood. And the grounds for our motion are so strong.
Your attorney might argue that residents should have made the motion within some type of limited window, or that current Land Use law may be in conflict with some of our Planning Board’s Bylaws. But… (1) the village never gave residents access to the Bylaws, nor made residents aware of the remedies available thereunder (despite all the clear cut opposition and complaint of conflict), and (2) the Bylaws definitely do not clearly command the Board to adhere to a 45 day limit.
Rather, the Bylaws state:
Any motions to rehear an application or portion thereof made after the 45 days following the publication of decision shall be considered strictly by leave and discretion of the Board in consideration of the protected interests of the applicant as balanced against the public interest.
We the residents believe the public interest here is greater. Your attorney would have to argue that the developers have a greater interest here than the village or its residents. That’s the criteria and that would be dangerous.
Furthermore, at this time your residents are not yet asking for a “rehearing” or anything that might be argued to conflict with land use law. We are asking, as is our defined right under your own Bylaws 2.13 and 7.22, for an investigation and public hearings to investigate some very material Conflicts and Mistakes that tainted the process and harmed the “public interest.” The PB can decide if an Application “rehearing” is necessary later, after the hearings regarding Planning Board “process”!
Allowing these conflicts and mistakes to stand, uninvestigated, creates a dangerous new precedent for Ridgewood, where village-changing decisions may be made with improper influence and/or error. It is in the Public Interest to review this and, if issues are found, set the right precedent to make sure it doesn’t happen again!

Ridgewood the great debate ;Full-day vs Half-day Kindergarten: “do it fir da kidz”

Little_Rascals
October 5,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood now joins the great debate ;Full-day vs Half-day Kindergarten. Lets face it in the Village we have many parents who seem very pro-full day because it saves money on day care . We also have another group that believes it better prepares children to acquire basic skills for learning  . Still others like the teachers union see it as job producing and more yet want to give their kids a leg up on global competition.

The detractors feel its nothing more than additional baby sitting ,that the results do not really justify the extra time ; that kids need time to be kids, and parents should act like parents . Some feel that too much control is given to the schools and that one sided points of views will be pushed even further stunting creativity and intellectual curiosity .

But first lets take a look at the history ,Kindergarten dates all the way back to the 1800s when it began as a full-day program.Half-day Kindergarten actually began during WWII when schools across the country began to cut their kindergarten classes back to a half-day in order to free up additional labor.

Full-day kindergarten reappeared in the 1960s as an intervention to help disadvantaged children catch up to their peers through additional schooling. But, now it has gained popularity among middle class two income families. Over the past 30 years, where the percentage of children in full-day programs has grown from 10% to just over half of U.S. kindergartners.

The rationale for full-day kindergarten has been and continues to be that the more time children spend in school, the more they will learn. Detractors however have warned that an early emphasis on academic learning, at the expense of play time, could harm children emotionally and academically in the long run.

Lets face it we constantly hear how “Millennials ” are the most over educated and under performing generation. Spending there days watching reality TV ,playing video games and questioning why they have to work at all. They are buried under a pile of student loans with degrees in under water basket weaving .So it would seem at lest for Millennials”  more time in school has not worked at all.

This all brings us back to the quality over quantity argument  and clearly for many “Millennials ”   its been as the saying goes ;garbage in ,garbage out.

While many studies show academic gains for full day Kindergarten can be fleeting , others show significant gains for disadvantaged children particularly ,’English is a second language  types .

A new study from Chloe R. Gibbs at the University of Virginia holds some preliminary good news for proponents of full-day kindergarten.Though the implications of the study won’t be clear until the students studied are much older. The Gibbs study showed most notably, the advantage for Hispanic full-day students over other Hispanic kindergartners is nearly twice that seen in the overall sample.

Other studies have suggested that children in full-day programs scored higher in reading and math than their half-day counterparts at the end of kindergarten, those gains had evaporated by the end of 1st grade, the researcher reports. This was true for both girls and boys and black and Hispanic children. In fact, Hispanic children who attended full-day kindergarten programs performed worse at the end of 1st grade than children who attended half-day kindergarten.

An interesting note in the Gibbs study and this very much applies to Ridgewood ; Because full-day kindergarten classes have long been used as a way to give high-need students an extra boost, full-day students have historically been comparatively disadvantaged. As a result, any difference in the groups’ outcomes may be due to full-day kindergarten or may be caused by other differences in their lives outside the classroom — such as disparities in access to learning opportunities and academic support at home — typically associated with living in poverty.

Which gets to the heart of our point in a Village like Ridgewood with a huge diversity of opportunities for learning ,friends, doing ,playing and experiencing . Our fear is the full-day kindergarten will actually decrease the diversity of opportunities for some people and again that one sided points of views will be pushed even further stunting creativity and intellectual curiosity .

We have no way of knowing, unfortunately only time will tell , but as many promoters of school budgets in that past have issued the battle cry ; “do it fir da kidz”. So what ever you decide on November 8th the decision should be should be made based on whats best for your kids or your grand childern. You know your kids better than anyone and they probably need you more than you think .

IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING LEAF REMOVAL FOR 2016

Ridgewood NJ, Last year, in our ongoing effort to simplify the leaf schedule, we invited residents to share their thoughts on how to improve this service. We gathered your comments and have prepared a timeframe in which leaves are to be placed in the street, see below. Once leaves are placed in the street, Village crews will be collecting these leaves AFTER the dates listed for each area. If you employ the services of a landscaper please communicate these dates to them.   Leaves can also be placed in paper biodegradable bags. Bags will be available at the Recycling Center on a first come, first serve basis. When using bags please place them on the curb area and they will be collected separately. You may continue to bring leaves as well as branches/brush to the Recycling Center. The hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Please note no branches/brush will be collected in the street during leaf season.

PLACE YOUR LEAVES IN THE STREET ONLY DURING THE TIME PERIOD INDICATED FOR YOUR AREA:

Area A                                Area B                                Area C                                 Area D

Oct. 18 – 23                       Oct. 19 – 25                        Oct. 20 – 27                       Oct. 25 – 31

Leaves can only be placed in the street, fronting your property, on the dates listed above. Once leaves are removed from your street, no additional leaves may be placed until the next scheduled date for your area. Enforcement will continue this year to insure the Village’s success of this service. An enforcement agent will issue a summons to those who violate these guidelines. Fines for first offenders begin at $85.

Residents in Yardwaste Area B will remain the same with the exception of the following streets which will now be considered “Area D” for leaf season only.

Obama DOJ drops charges against alleged provider of Libyan weapons

hillary-clinton-what-difference-does-it-make

Arms dealer had threatened to expose Hillary Clinton’s talks about arming anti-Qadhafi rebels.

By Kenneth P. Vogel and Josh Gerstein

10/04/16 04:45 PM EDT

The Obama administration is moving to dismiss charges against an arms dealer it had accused of selling weapons that were destined for Libyan rebels.

Lawyers for the Justice Department on Monday filed a motion in federal court in Phoenix to drop the case against the arms dealer, an American named Marc Turi, whose lawyers also signed the motion.

The deal averts a trial that threatened to cast additional scrutiny on Hillary Clinton’s private emails as Secretary of State, and to expose reported Central Intelligence Agency attempts to arm rebels fighting Libyan leader Moammar Qadhafi.

Government lawyers were facing a Wednesday deadline to produce documents to Turi’s legal team, and the trial was officially set to begin on Election Day, although it likely would have been delayed by protracted disputes about classified information in the case.

Maureen Dowd: ‘Feminism died a little bit’ under Bill Clinton

hillary-clinton-what-difference-does-it-make

Dylan Stableford
Senior editor
October 3, 2016

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd says that the momentum behind the women’s movement took a hit during President Bill Clinton’s scandal-plagued years in the White House.

“Feminism sort of died in that period,” Dowd told Yahoo News Global Anchor Katie Couric on Monday. “Because the feminists had to come along with Bill Clinton’s retrogressive behavior with women in order to protect the progressive policies for women that Bill Clinton had as president.”

The women in Clinton’s administration, Dowd said, were forced to support him while he denied allegations of sexual misconduct against the likes of Monica Lewinsky and Gennifer Flowers. He would later admit some of the allegations.

“Bill Clinton had [Secretary of State] Madeleine Albright and [Secretary of Health and Human Services] Donna Shalala come out and say he was telling the truth on Monica,” Dowd said. “And so all of these amazing, accomplished women that worked around him were kind of called to support him, and it’s almost a class issue, because they would put these women down on class or, in Monica’s case, they would say she’s a delusional stalker.”

Helping Your Sons And Daughters Prepare For The Business World

RHS_ Graduation_theridgewoodblog

October 2,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Each year, parents send their sons and daughters off to college with high hopes that in four years – give or take – they will earn a degree and embark on successful careers.

But while moms and dads may fret most about grades and study habits, they can give their offspring a real boost if they also insist the students carry some of the financial burden for college, says Matt Stewart, an entrepreneur and co-founder of College Works Painting (www.collegeworks.com/about), an internship program that provides practical business experience for college students.

That means getting a job – either during the school year or over the summer break, or both.

“College students are much more invested in the experience if they have to help pay for college, rather than have mom and dad take care of everything for them,” Stewart says. “There’s a natural tendency to work a little harder on classwork when at least a part of the tuition or dorm room costs come out of your own pocket.”

But beyond that personal-responsibility aspect, it’s worth noting that businesses are seeking job candidates with real-world work experience.

“Those on-the-job lessons are invaluable,” Stewart says.

For example, interns with College Works Painting operate their own house-painting business with hands-on guidance from mentors.

The benefits for students of working their way through college include:

• A regular paycheck. The rising cost of higher education has put paying the full price of college out of reach for many parents, and scholarships and grants often provide only a small percentage of the costs. The more students can pay themselves, the lower their student-loan debt will be when they enter the workforce.
• Practical experience. Nothing prepares you for work like work, Stewart says. A classroom can train students on certain skills necessary for their career choice, but on-the-job experience is just as valuable. Even if a part-time job is unrelated to career aspirations, a student might learn such skills as collaboration, time management and customer relations.
• Resume enhancement. One of the weaknesses recent college graduates sometimes have is their resumes can be skimpy. A few summer jobs can help tremendously, Stewart says, giving managers who might consider hiring you more confidence that you have experience beyond listening to professorial lectures and cramming for final exams.
• Additional references. Hiring managers want to talk with people who know your work habits, and while it’s nice that a favorite professor or a high school football coach is willing to say good things, it’s even better to have references who can discuss relevant job skills.

“Having any job can be beneficial, but if you can you should try to land an especially challenging job or internship,” Stewart says. “When you graduate, you’re going to face stiff competition in the job market. The more you’ve been able to stretch yourself past your comfort zone and develop new skills, the greater the odds are that you’ll be the one picked out of all the applications that come pouring in.”

About Matt Stewart

Matt Stewart is co-founder of College Works Painting (www.collegeworks.com/about), which provides business experience for thousands of college students each year. The award-winning program also offers high-quality house-painting services for homeowners.

Former Fed Chair Alan Greenspan Joins Advisors Capital Management as Economic Advisor

RIDGEWOOD, N.J., Advisors Capital Management, LLC (ACM), a globally recognized investment manager, is pleased to announce that Dr. Alan Greenspan has joined ACM as Economic Advisor. The former Federal Reserve Chairman will work closely with senior members of the firm and participate in the firm’s investment committee by providing economic analysis to support the firm’s top-down approach to selecting sectors in the economy for investment.  Dr. Greenspan will also provide economic and market valuation analysis.

Dr. Alan Greenspan Joins Advisors Capital Management as Economic Advisor

ACM’s co-founder and Chief Investment Officer, Dr. Charles Lieberman, is looking forward to the collaboration. “I am very excited to resume working with one of the towering members of the economics profession. He has served our profession and our nation with distinction. I am now pleased we can bring the benefit of his insight to our investment clients.”

Dr. Greenspan’s insight will be highly beneficial to ACM’s investment management. ACM’s investment process led by Dr. Lieberman, a former Wall Street, and Federal Reserve economist, identifies economic sectors that might be affected by macro developments, before implementing a value oriented bottom-up securities selection.

About Alan Greenspan

Alan Greenspan served five terms as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from August 11, 1987, when he was first appointed by President Ronald Reagan.  His last term ended on January 31, 2006. He was appointed chairman by four different presidents.

Shortly after assuming office as chairman of the Board of Governors, Greenspan faced the October 1987 stock market crash and acted quickly to inject liquidity into the financial system to calm the markets. During his tenure, he led the Federal Reserve through several major events with significant economic repercussions, including two U.S. recessions, the Asian financial crisis of 1997, the collapse of Long Term Capital and the Russian default in 1998 and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Many observers credit Greenspan with further reducing inflation while facilitating the longest official economic expansion in U.S. history. For these accomplishments, he was dubbed the “Maestro” by Wall Street analysts.  He was also known for his skill at building consensus among members of the Federal Open Market Committee on policy issues.

About Advisors Capital Management, LLC

Established in 1998, and headquartered in Ridgewood NJ, ACM is globally recognized investment manager providing portfolio and wealth management services to affiliated advisors and direct clients throughout the United States. ACM has been named to the Financial Times Top 300 RIAs* over the past two years and the firm’s investment income solutions have been recognized by numerous financial media outlets including Barron’s, The Wall Street Journal and CNBC.

Reader says If the Aronsohn projects go through, Ridgewood downtown may never recover

CBD high density housing

RE: October 4th,the Ridgewood Planning Board will be discussing the Conflict of Interest complaint
Get out and speak up. No, get out and shout. If the Aronsohn projects go through, our downtown may never recover and the Aronsohn blight will spread through town over the next decade. We’ve all spent a lot of tax dollars to maintain this town, let’s not give it up to a handful of land speculators who have to be laughing gleefully at the stupidity of the Aronsohn council majority.

More importantly, the conflict issue raised by these citizens calls out to all of us. Is this how we want our local government to be run? If these allegations are true, we need to put that truth into the light of fay and take appropriate action. If we don’t, what message do we tell the next generation? Just as importantly,, what message do we send to the next round of land speculators who want to take over another section of town for their own profit? Do we want that message to be: “Sure, get some friends placed on our planning board and walk all over us.”

So,email or call your planning board representatives. Show up at the meeting. Write tot he town council, especially those we just elected and tell them you want action.

Please also consider sending the following note to the Planning Board and our Mayor via email:

Dear Mayor Knudsen, Chairman Joel and Planning Board Members,

I am aware that a group of concerned residents delivered a Motion of Complaint to the Ridgewood Planning Board, under By Law Sections 2.13 and 7.21, dated September 16th. Their motion brings to light a series of conflicts of interest and unacceptable mistakes that impacted the high density housing votes. It spotlights the truly defective process by which these highly unpopular ordinances (3489, 3490, 3491 and 3493) were passed. It is not right for Ridgewood residents to have such important decisions made, and the future of our village impacted, by a forum influenced by potential personal conflicts and/or mistakes. Preventing such actions is clearly the intent of the Planning Board’s own By Laws.

Therefore, I fully support the motion made by these residents. I ask that the Board stop all current high density site plan reviews and promptly begin a complete review of the residents’ complaints. Should any conflicts or mistakes be found, the Ordinance votes and Ordinances themselves should be rescinded and reevaluated via a proper and untainted process.

Secretary Cafarelli, please forward/print this email to all Planning Board members.

Thanks for considering this request.

Mayor Susan Knudsen, Mayor ([email protected]) Michael Cafarelli, Planning Board Secretary ([email protected])

Ridgewood NJ, just days after Hillary Clinton trolled two White House opponents with a single response, according to the main stream media ,”dinging Gary Johnson and Donald Trump by naming Angela Merkel as her favorite world leader.”

The Ridgewood blog found it more interesting the 30 years in politics and this is who Hillary Clinton singled voluntarily out without being asked .

Angela Merkel could use some friends about now , like Clinton’s immigration proposal  Merkel has continued to defend her decision to admit more than a million migrants to Germany last year has left her increasingly isolated from other leaders coping with anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim sentiment in their electorates, especially after terrorist attacks.

Worse yet ,Merkel also currently finds her self in “deep do do” as fears of a Deutsche Bank collapse have rattled financial markets across the globe. Under capitalized Deutsche Bank shares were hit first by a demand for up to $14 billion from the U.S. Department of Justice for mis-selling mortgage-backed securities, then a reported Berlin lead rescue plan seemed tenuous at best.

In Italy six current and former managers of Deutsche Bank, including Michele Faissola, Michele Foresti and Ivor Dunbar, were charged in Milan for colluding to falsify the accounts of Italy’s third-biggest bank, Monte Paschi (which itself is so insolvent it is currently scrambling to finalize a private sector bailout) and manipulate the market. Two former executives at Nomura Holdings Inc. and five at Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena were also charged.

On September 24th Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled out any state assistance for Deutsche Bank AG in the year heading into the national election in September 2017, a magazine called Focus magazine reported.

So does this imply that Deutsche Bank’s likely recapitalization effort while asking German Tax Payer Bailout or German Bank Depositor Bail-in? Let face it ,Deutsche Bank is going to need some money ASAP. Remember in a concerted effort to reduce or potentially eliminate the risk of taxpayer-funded bail-outs of European banks, the EU implemented a new “bail-in” regime beginning on January 1, 2016.

Or perhaps her new friend Hillary Clinton will come to the rescue with some kind of a US sponsored US taxpayer subsidized bailout?

It is not so far fetched with the Obama Administration setting the precedent with the Iranian payoff earlier this year.
