Franklin Lakes NJ, Franklin Lakes grade school officials alerted families on Thursday via text that a swastika was discovered in a bathroom at Franklin Lakes Middle School earlier that day.
The text emphasized, “A swastika or any symbol of hate has no place here,” and underlined the commitment to fostering an educational environment marked by respect and tolerance. Issued jointly by School Superintendent Greg Macderi and Board of Education President Ari Donio, the notice assured a comprehensive investigation, in collaboration with School Resource Officers, into the incident.
The statement conveyed ongoing efforts by the administration and counselors to address antisemitism and other biases through assemblies and lessons. It reinforced a commitment to cultivating an atmosphere of respect and inclusion while unequivocally denouncing such behavior. The community was urged to do the same.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a swastika discovery at Ramapo High School on Jan. 12, with a notice about it not being sent until Jan. 18. The investigation into that incident is still underway, as indicated by school officials. Discipline reports for students remain confidential and are not disclosed to the public.
