Ridgewood NJ, tolls are going up on Monday and reminded me of this toll sign from 1802 that’s in our collections. The inventory card notes it’s from the “Bergen Turnpike – Gate 5” and that it was discontinued in 1915. Received from the Board of Freeholders, 31-1/2” H, 25-1/2” W. “Excursions Rate” appears to be painted over and those carrying a heavy load w/2 horses pay more like trucks do today.

The photograph of toll gate is noted as from “Ridgefield” and dated 1902. Also Bergen County Historical Society collections.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which runs both highways, adopted a $2.5 billion 2023 budget which calls for a 3% toll increase starting January 1st 2023 in a budget that increased by 7.4% over 2022.
