IS FAT KILLING YOU, OR IS SUGAR?

What we do and don’t know about dietary science.

By Jerome Groopman

Nutritional science is too complex to furnish easy answers about what to eat.Illustration by Ben Wiseman

In the early nineteen-sixties, when cholesterol was declared an enemy of health, my parents quickly enlisted in the war on fat. Onion rolls slathered with butter, herring in thick cream sauce, brisket of beef with a side of stuffed derma, and other staples of our family cuisine disappeared from our table. Margarine dethroned butter, vinegar replaced cream sauce, poached fish substituted for brisket. I recall experiencing something like withdrawal, daydreaming about past feasts as my stomach grumbled. My father’s blood-cholesterol level—not to mention that of his siblings and friends—became a regular topic of conversation at the dinner table. Yet, despite the restrictive diet, his number scarcely budged, and a few years later, in his mid-fifties, he had a heart attack and died.

Summer Jobs Season Approaching at Shore

The approach of Memorial Day means it’s summer jobs season at the New Jersey shore.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — With Memorial Day soon approaching, it’s summer jobs season at the New Jersey shore.

Business owners tell The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/2oNZd6i) fewer international students have been applying for the seasonal positions in recent years, opening the door for more locals to get in on the action.

Businesses in Ocean City such as Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and numerous eateries hire hundreds of workers between the ages of 14 and 21 to start around mid-June. Most get paid a little more than minimum wage.

Above all, the business owners say, intelligence and an outgoing attitude is a must.

John Kavchok, personnel director for the Wonderland Pier, said most summer employees work six days a week and start at $8.50 an hour. Among the fringe benefits are a 25 percent discount on pizza and free rides.

Speaking of rides — ride operators must be 16 or older under state law, and Kavchok said the pier chooses employees for those jobs who are responsible and attentive.

Newark schools superintendent: Why charters succeed | Opinion

School Choice by ArtChick

Y STAR-LEDGER GUEST COLUMNIST

By Chris Cerf

I serve as superintendent of the Newark Public Schools and previously served as the state commissioner of education. In both capacities, I have defined my goal in precisely the same way: to do everything possible to assure that every child, regardless of birth circumstances, has access to a free, high-quality public education that launches him or her into adulthood prepared for success.

The most striking aspect of Charles Wowkanech’s opinion article in The Star-Ledger (“Charter schools threaten diversity”) is that he is indifferent to this basic and, in my view, inarguable goal. Stuck in the same ideological quagmire that has consumed so many others, his view is that public charter schools are bad and traditional public schools are inherently good. In service of that argument, he then proceeds to misstate a rather remarkable array of objectively provable facts about public education in New Jersey.

Jersey lawmakers look to dig the $135B pension hole even deeper

Sweeney & Prieto

By Post Editorial Board

April 2, 2017 | 7:32pm

Jersey lawmakers just don’t get it: The state’s massive pension-fund shortfalls last week prompted Moody’s to downgrade Trenton’s credit rating for the 11th time under Gov. Chris Christie, yet the Legislature wants to make the problems worse.

Moody’s cited New Jersey’s gargantuan, and growing, unfunded pension liabilities as key to its decision to lower the state’s rating from A2 to A3 — the second downgrade in four months.

The move reflects the “negative impact of significant pension underfunding” and “a persistent structural imbalance,” wrote Moody’s analyst Baye Larsen. Despite Christie’s notable boosts in payments to the funds, state contributions “remain well below the actuarial recommended” amount.

Yet lawmakers (of both parties) want Christie to sign a bill that would hand control of one of the state’s biggest funds — for police and firefighter pensions — to their union representatives.

“Giving management to the pension beneficiaries removes political interest from the investments and places responsibility with the employees who will benefit,” says Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D).

Uh, not quite — because the employees wouldn’t face any risk. With a majority of votes on the new board, union reps could hike benefits and slice the amount members must chip in. And if that plunges the fund further underwater, Jersey’s taxpayers would be the ones on the hook.

It is True The Village of Ridgewood Actually Makes Money on Graydon Pool

Graydon-_Crowded_baby_beach_water_2012_theridgewoodblog

April 3,2017
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, A reader recent stated during a discussion  , “The Village actually makes money on Graydon. This was confirmed several times by the Mayor and Village Manager during recent Village Council meetings. In a nutshell, revenues from the pool exceed expenses by a significant amount and have done so for many years in a row”

According to Deputy Mayor Mike Sedon,” In looking at this year’s Village budget– tab 10– Department of Parks and Recreation 2017 budget under Graydon Pool the total expense listed in the actual 2016 budget was $273,895.87. This included temporary and seasonal salaries and wages– $186,798, and $87,097.87 in other expenses such as postage for flyers, printing costs, maintenance, supplies chemicals and several other items needed to run the facility. These were last year’s total expenses as listed in this year’s municipal budget.

In 2016 Graydon Pool brought in $336,177. The revenue breaks down as follows:
Ridgewood resident adult– $78,960
Ridgewood resident child– $118,140
Senior/disabled–                 $11,040 (the annual badge is sold for $30 to these patrons)
Nonresident adult–             $29,680
Nonresident child–             $11,025
POS–                                      $87,332 (includes daily guest passes and outside camps)

So with revenues totaling $336,117 minus total expenses of 273,895.87 there was a positive difference of $62,281.13 in 2016. This make Graydon cash flow positive and in essence Graydon Pool is actually subsidizing other parts of Ridgewood’s budget.

They Can Hit 400-Foot Homers, but Playing Catch? That’s Tricky

baseball_layout

By BILL PENNINGTONAPRIL 1, 2017

In the 40 years that Jack Thomson has been coaching high school baseball, he has seen a noticeable rise in the talent of players trying out for his team.

They scorch line drives, they hurl blazing fastballs.

But something is often missing.

“They can’t play catch,” said Thomson, a coach in California, one of the more fertile grounds for future major leaguers. “They’re bad at it. You’d be surprised how bad it looks. We have to teach them how to play catch.”

In modern youth baseball, where the culture has been transformed by the pursuit of the holy grail, a college athletic scholarship, the fundamentals are falling by the wayside in favor of flashier skills like big-league-style hitting and pitching.

Private coaching and specialized camps are proliferating along with travel teams whose primary goal is putting players in a position to display their batting and pitching skills at college recruiting showcases. These events are cattle calls, with everyone trying to impress.

WARNING: U.S. Ponzi Retirement Market In Big Trouble As Withdrawals Now Exceed Contributions

Charles_Ponzi

Apr 1, 2017 9:17 PM
By the SRSrocco Report,

The U.S. Retirement Market is in BIG TROUBLE as annual benefits paid out are now larger than total contributions.  Actually, the amount of net withdrawals were the highest in history.  When payouts become larger than contributions… then we have the making of the typical PONZI SCHEME.

Americans who have invested their hard-earned money into a 401K, had no idea that it was the Greatest Ponzi Scheme in history.  Unfortunately, when the markets crack, so will the value of the U.S. Retirement market.  On the other hand, Americans who were wise enough to purchase physical precious metals will protect their wealth as the U.S. Paper Retirement Market collapses.

According to the most recent data by the ICI – Investment Company Institute, the U.S. Retirement Market ballooned to a new record high of $25.3 trillion at the end of 2016:

NJ TRANSIT PARTNERS WITH U.S. ARMY ON JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR VETERANS

Ridgewood Train Station

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ,  NJ TRANSIT is partnering with the U.S. Army on a program to help provide soldiers with career opportunities following their military service.  In a signing ceremony held today at the Frank R. Lautenberg Station at Secaucus Junction, NJ TRANSIT became the newest member of the U.S. Army’s Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS).

The PaYS program is designed to help soldiers prepare for a career after the Army by connecting them with employers who understand the skill, discipline and work ethic that military service members can bring to an agency.  Since PaYS began in 2000, more than 500 employers have partnered with the program.

“We are pleased to join the U.S. Army’s program which benefits both NJ TRANSIT and soldiers in many ways,’’ said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Steven H. Santoro. “As an agency that proudly employs veterans throughout all levels of our organization, we know firsthand the tremendous value they bring to our agency.  The leadership skills that veterans possess are true assets to our transportation system.’’

PaYS matches soldiers with participating businesses most in need of their particular skill set.  During the enlistment process, soldiers can choose to participate in PaYS and select the job and company they are most qualified for. By participating in PaYS, NJ TRANSIT will provide qualified PaYS participants the opportunity to be assessed and to possibly interview with a representative of the company when a job opening is available. The program does not guarantee employment, but it does help a soldier clear the first hurdle to starting a career.

“The Army PaYS program is a win-win opportunity. The Army helps soldiers find employment with companies who value the skill and discipline that comes with an Army career, and companies can draw from an endless pool of qualified talent to fulfill their needs,’’ said Lieutenant Colonel Ed Croot, U.S. Army Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Battalion.

People are fleeing New York at an alarming rate

ridgewood real-estate

By Aaron Short

April 1, 2017 | 11:00pm

More people are leaving the New York region than any other major metropolitan area in the country.

More than 1 million people moved out of the New York area to another part of the country since 2010, a rate of 4.4 percent — the highest negative net migration rate among the nation’s large population centers, US Census records show.

The number of people leaving the region — which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island — in one year swelled from 187,034 in 2015 to 223,423 in 2016, while the number of international immigrants settling in the tri-state area dwindled from 181,551 to 160,324 over the same period, records show.

The nation’s economy is improving, there are more jobs in cheaper places to live, and retirees are choosing to move to warmer climates, experts say.

Ridgewood NJ, Charlamagne Tha God—the self-proclaimed “Prince of Pissing People Off,” co-host of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, and “hip-hop’s Howard Stern”—shares his unlikely success story as well as how embracing one’s truths is a fundamental key to success and happiness.

In his new book, Charlamagne Tha God presents his comic, often controversial, and always brutally honest insights on how living an authentic life is the quickest path to success. Beginning with his journey from the small town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina to his headline grabbing interviews with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and Hillary Clinton, he shares how he turned his troubled early life around by owning his (many) mistakes and refusing to give up on his dreams, even after his controversial opinions got him fired from several on-air jobs. Combining his own story with bold advice and his signature commitment to honesty at all costs, Charlamagne hopes this book will give others the confidence to live their own truths.

“I wrote this for the dreamers, for the optimists; this book isn’t for pessimists,” Charlamagne told HipHopDX. “This book is about embracing who and what you are regardless of race, gender, sexuality, and class. God gave you the privilege of this thing called life so regardless of what this society tells you that you can’t do and what you don’t have to understand you lack nothing God gave you everything you need to succeed.”

Trump’s Sanctuary City Stance Ripples Through NJ Campaign

ebt-sign

The Trump administration’s emphasis this week on quashing sanctuary cities’ efforts to shelter immigrants without legal permission has ricocheted through the New Jersey governor’s race.

By MICHAEL CATALINI, Associated Press

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The Trump administration’s emphasis this week on quashing sanctuary cities’ efforts to shelter immigrants ( shelter illegal immigrants) without legal permission ricocheted through the New Jersey governor’s race.

Democrats vowed to push back against President Donald Trump, setting up a potential showdown over federal funding that the GOP president says is on the line. Republicans, meanwhile, criticize sanctuary cities and question their purpose.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie, who is term-limited, has said there’s “no chance” he’ll back Democratic lawmakers’ efforts to require the state to pick up the tab if federal dollars to sanctuary cities are cut.

The last thing N.J. needs is another entitlement

Baby-3

Editorial: The last thing N.J. needs is another entitlement

April 2, 2017 at 3:00 AM

State Senate President Steve Sweeney, the sponsor of New Jersey’s 2009 paid family leave law, wants to expand the program. Giving workers paid leave from their jobs to care for a sick relative or a new baby — and paying for it with a small, capped payroll deduction — proved to be a sound idea.

Abuse has not been widespread, employers’ worst fears have not been realized and some studies have contended that companies benefit from the program.

But there is no compelling reason to expand this new entitlement, as Sweeney (D-West Deptford) is unfortunately proposing now.

Oh, wait. There is one compelling reason: To boost Sweeney’s and fellow Democrats’ chances in November, when the entire Legislature is up for election. The Democrats shouldn’t need that much help this year. But Jersey pols, Democrat and Republican, never forget what keeps them in office — giving gifts to prized constituencies.

Sweeney, in particular, is in a bit of a jam, with the powerful New Jersey Education Association, miffed by his pushback on teacher pensions, vowing to fight him. Hence, a renewed commitment by lawmakers to dangle popular proposals in front of voters — like, say, expanding the paid family leave program.
