Why is New Jersey forcing senior citizens to flee the state?
After decades of contributing as full-fledged members of our communities throughout New Jersey, we find ourselves increasingly forced to flee the state due to the burdensome and discriminatory nature of property taxes for seniors on fixed incomes.
New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the nation, an average of $8,500 per year versus the national average of $3,800. However, you know these facts. What you don’t know is that for senior citizens, who often live in adult communities to reduce their expenses, the property tax burden is disproportionately higher — often 17-20 percent of a senior’s annual income, and climbing.
The issue of taxes is always a complicated decision for leaders, to allocate resources equitably among disparate interests and groups. The Abbott decision, for example, appropriately (and importantly) required the commitment of state education funding to support urban districts. But funding decisions by the governor and state Legislature, over time, had unintended consequences as well.
The shifting of aid to education in some areas of the state, without increasing overall state aid to education, has resulted in communities being forced to fund local education through higher property taxes. The unintended — but real consequence of this trend — has resulted in retirees (on fixed incomes) being forced to pay disproportionately higher taxes.
It would appear the mainstream media (along with several celebrities and Swedish politicians) is going to be apologizing to President Trump once again.
Having spent the entire new cycle trying to ignore the immigrant crisis facing Sweden, and pin the ignorant tail on Trump, both Dagbladet and Expressen reports riots breaking out in the highly immigrant concentrated Stockholdm borough of Rinkeby, Sweden with police firing warning shots as 100s of young people throw stones and burn cars.
During the evening hundreds of young people gathered in the center of Rinkeby, well known for its high concentration of immigrants and people with immigrant ancestry.

Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly officially ordered federal agents this week to begin arresting and deporting more illegal immigrants, releasing them from the handcuffs the Obama administration had imposed, and making headway on one of President Trump’s chief campaign promises.
While young adult illegal immigrant “Dreamers” are still exempted, agents were told there are no longer any other special classes of people that should be considered off limits for deportation.
Those caught at the border are to be swiftly shipped back, Mr. Kelly said, and he freed agents to target a broader universe of illegal immigrants for deportation from within the interior of the U.S. The secretary said agents are still to give priority to those with criminal rap sheets, but are free to use discretion — taken away from them in the Obama years — to detain anyone they believe to be in the country illegally.

This week for gas prices might be like the last hours of a great party that you wish could last longer, but you know is starting to wind down.
On Friday, the average price for regular in the state was $2.32 a gallon, but discount stations ranged between $2.07 and $2.09, GasBuddy.com reported. An average price of $2.20 or less wasn’t hard to find.
There are two factors that drivers can thank for keeping prices low at the pump — lousy demand for gas and tremendous supplies of it. But low gas prices aren’t going to last much longer, experts said.
CHATHAM, NJ – Chatham Middle School parents questioned the emphasis being put on the teaching of the religion of Islam in a 7th grade social studies class on Monday night during the public portion of the Chatham Board of Education meeting.
Nancy Gayer, one of the parents to address the board, told a story about how her son had been prohibited from presenting a power-point to the class years earlier because the teacher objected to one panel shown for “three seconds,” which gave his own religious view.
Gayer said her son was not allowed to show his power-point to the class because it was “proselytizing.” She compared it to the “World Cultures and Geography Class” her son is taking at the middle school (see video below), which Gayer believes is outright “proselytizing” in violation of district policy No 2270.

The hearing for American ambassador-designate to Israel David Friedman at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week was intense. The Democratic senators came after him hard, quoting every controversial thing he’s ever said. Mind you, they couldn’t seem to find one controversial thing he’s ever done. Because no one disputes that David is an upstanding, decent man who has had caused little to no controversy. But they called him out on harsh statements he made about those he felt were not sympathetic to Israel.
But of particular note was how harshly he was treated by my friend, Senator Cory Booker, who told David over and over again that although these were just words, words matter.

Ridgewood NJ, Fox News host Brenda Buttner and Ridgewood resident died after a battle with cancer at age 55. Buttner, was a mother of two daughters.
Brenda Buttner, was the host of Fox News Channel’s Bull and Bears, and she She also frequently contributed to Your World with Neil Cavuto.
Fox News reported that Buttner joined the network in 2000 after blazing a trail for female business reporters on CNBC. She also had served as a correspondent in Washington.
Buttner received numerous awards for her work, including a Cable Ace award in 1996 for best business programming (The Money Club)and a National Clarion award in 1990 for best news story. In addition, many of her personal finance articles have been published in popular publications such as The New York Times and Ladies’ Home Journal.
She was an honors graduate from Harvard University and spent two years as a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford University, England.
Glen Rock NJ, A house fire at 506 Prospect Street in Glen Rock on Monday evening, 02/20, was battled by firefighters from Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hawthorne, Midland Park, and Ridgewood. At least one (1) firefighter was injured while fighting the smokey blaze. Ridgewood EMS assisted Glen Rock EMS at the scene, and Ridgewood PD units assisted Glen Rock PD with traffic control.

Washington TWP, he adult female driver of a Nissan Versa Note escaped injury during a mishap in which her vehicle, while being driven in reverse, crashed into a single family home located at 320 Mountain Avenue, Washington Township on Monday afternoon, 02/20. Washington Township PD & FD personnel were assisted at the scene by members of the Paramus Rescue Squad and Hillsdale EMS personnel. Damage to the structure was extensive; however, the vehicle appeared to have been drive-able.
Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Emergency Services Director and Chief, Tony Lillo reported the Departments statistics for the year 2016. The volunteer department handled over 1797 requests for assistance. Chief Lillo stated that “call numbers alone don’t tell the story of our volunteers. Looking at the volume of hours the members donated, gives a better picture of the dedication of our volunteers who donated 20,593 hours to the Village.”
On the average, each volunteer donated 326 hours to the Village. There are of course a few who far exceeded the average. The following volunteers, who donated over 800 hours each to Ridgewood Emergency Services:
