Reader says the Ridgewood Council Majority has Nothing but Contempt for Residents

3 amigos in action Ridgewood NJ

I’m constantly amazed at the contempt that these 3 have for so many of their own neighbors. People that comment at meetings are generally well-meaning and highly involved residents. Many of them are serial volunteers that make great contributions to our Village. The Council majority is at best dismissive and at worst obnoxious to anyone that dares to voice an opinion that differs from the conclusion that they’ve already reached or the deal that they’ve already made. They hold civility hearings and are completely uncivilized, they point fingers claiming conflict of interest and all have conflicts themselves, they disregard their own rules and flagrantly collaborate outside public meetings in violation of the Sunshine Laws.

History has shown again and again when governments try to silence their own citizens, citizens rise up and overthrow the government. Mr Aronsohn has confirmed that he will not seek re-election but there has been no word from the other 2 – one can only assume that they will run again. Please spread the word to your neighbors and send out links to the various recordings of this horrific behavior. We have to make sure that neither of the remaining Council majority gets another term.

Habernickel Park: Only One Resident Showed from the Affected Neighborhood

Habernickel HealthBarn USA protest

February 4,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Only one (1) resident from the affected area showed up at the meeting last night.  The plan seems to be moving forward with just some minor tweaking required in the contract language.  The main sticking issues from the neighborhood’s point of view are:  1) increased traffic, including large school buses during the school year between 10 AM and 3 PM, 2) signage on the building and, 3) possible field use conflicts (with softball, soccer, etc.).  Most could not believe that only one (1) person took the time to show up given the amount of new bus traffic in the neighborhood and the potential interference with local sports , possible loss of property values as well as the potential conflict with Green Acre funding.

see below

Good Afternoon

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns.  While the change in zoning from residential to business is not under Green Acres’
jurisdiction, the use of Habernickel Park most certainly is.  The Village was forthcoming in educating Green Acres in the business
looking to lease the Habernickel Gate House.  The Village sent me a brochure and directed me to the HealthBarn USA’s website. However, while I did see the popularity and many accolades of this business it did not translate into the number of potential students
you have given me.

You are correct that busses bringing students to the Park on a regular basis would be disruptive to community as
would 60 to 75 students attending classes on a daily basis in addition to the park’s regular visitors.  However, I do want to point
out that the programing will go through the Village Recreation Department or Community School and that ultimately the Village
has control of the course offerings.  Additionally, private clients cannot be served in this location; Ms. Antine would need
to bring her classes / workshops to her private clients.

You are also correct that the classes being proposed to be held are not all recreation / conservation oriented however Green Acres has stressed and the courses encouraged the use of the parkland in the programing.  N.J.A.C. 7:36-25.7(f) (attached) allows for the use of a building that existed on funded parkland at the time of receipt of

Green Acres funding as a recreation center provided the town complies with the change in use procedures at N.J.A.C. 7:36-25.6.

Green Acres believes that the type of classes / workshops that will be offered at the Habernickel Gate House are of the sort that would be found at any community or recreation center.

I appreciate your concerns regarding traffic and the business getting bigger.  Green Acres does not want the size of the Business,
HealthBarn USA, to negatively impact the park due to the business they are conducting onsite.  Green Acres looks at HealthBarn USA as a concession, providing to the residents a service the Village could not do on their own.  It will
not be allowed to become the headquarters for HealthBarn USA.

I am copying Janet Fricke on this email as she is responsible for addressing the public’s concerns regarding this change in use.  I
encourage you to voice your concern at the Public Hearing scheduled for Wednesday evening so that you can get the answers to your questions regarding how many classes, how many students, traffic, etc. .

Thank you for taking the time to contact me.  If you have further questions please let me know.  The State Offices are closed tomorrow, Election Day.  However, I will do my best to respond back in a timely fashion.

Malcolm McDowell says ‘A Clockwork Orange’ is becoming reality, 44 years after its release

clock work orange

BY KERI BLAKINGER

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Updated: Tuesday, February 2, 2016, 10:20 AM

Everything’s going to the droogs.

The nationwide release of “A Clockwork Orange” was 44 years ago — on Feb. 2, 1972 — but today its star, Malcolm McDowell, says the movie was more prescient than it seemed at the time.

Based on a novel by Anthony Burgess, the Stanley Kubrick film shows “a world in which all older people stayed indoors with their televisions on,” McDowell told the News. “And that’s basically what happened.

‘A CLOCKWORK ORANGE’ IS A MIND-SHATTERING VISION OF TOMORROW: 1971 REVIEW

“It’s just the young people out there doing drugs — and he foretold all this before the drug explosion.”

The film, like the book, depicts a dystopian future filled with “ultra-violence,” gangs of “droogs” and depravity at every turn. The four main characters — including McDowell’s lead character Alex — spend their free time in a bar where they drink drug-laced milk in preparation for an evening filled with violence, mayhem and even rape.

The book was released in 1962 and shooting for the film began in 1969, “so this is really before huge gang violence and drugs happened,” McDowell said.

With some of the most iconic scenes set behind bars, the prison system looms large in the world of “A Clockwork Orange” — much like in modern America.

ZIKA BITE FEAR NOW SPREAD BY SEX

FRENCH CARIBBEAN FACING ZIKA EPIDEMIC, TAKING EXTRA MEASURES

PARIS (AP) — Two French regions in the Caribbean face an epidemic of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which was just declared a global public health emergency, and France’s government is sending extra hospital equipment and preparing extra medical staff to combat it, the health minister said Wednesday.

Marisol Touraine told reporters that Martinique and French Guiana have had 2,500 potential cases and about 100 confirmed Zika cases since mid-December, including 20 pregnant women and two people suffering a temporary paralysis condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome.

“Our system of health and sanitary alert is fully mobilized,” Touraine said. “There are three objectives: to prevent, reinforce monitoring and anticipate.”

On Tuesday, the World Health Organization declared Zika a global public health emergency after being linked to brain deformities in babies in South America. Several thousand cases of microcephaly have been reported in Brazil since October, although researchers have so far not proven a definitive link to the virus. No vaccine exists for Zika.

A few cases have been reported in Guadeloupe and Saint Martin, also part of the French Caribbean. Nine people have come to mainland France with Zika this year, but Touraine said there is no risk of epidemic on the mainland.

THE RECORD

A 25-year-old Somerset County woman who survived a jump off the George Washington Bridge Wednesday evening was rescued in the Hudson River by a Rutherford volunteer firefighter with his personal boat.

A witness saw the woman, whose name was not released, jump off the bridge around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo said. Her car was found on Fort Washington Avenue in Manhattan.

She was conscious when she arrived at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, Pentangelo said. The boat’s name is the Michael P. Murphy, he said.

Scott Koen, 58, said he happened to be on the river helping a volunteer group search for the body of a Rockland County man who recently jumped from the bridge when a member of his crew saw the woman fall into the river.

Koen said he jumped into the water to tie a rope around her so that she could be hauled aboard his boat, a 46-foot buoy tender. She had told him that she was unable to climb a ladder onto the boat.

Real estate agent and Soap Star Terri Peck seeks Freeholder bid as BCRO Extends Filing Deadline for Candidates

February 3,2016
staff of the Ridgewood blog
Hackensack Nj, Bergen County Republican Organization (BCRO) Chairman Bob Yudin has confirmed that the county organization has extended the filing deadline for candidates who wish to be considered by the county convention and run for Freeholder. The deadline normally, February 1 has been extended to midnight on March 1.The filing change will extend the deadline for all county open offices including freeholder, sheriff, county clerk and surrogate.

Yudin made the decision or some say was forced to make the decision to extend the deadline following a depressing few weeks for the County GOP. First there was last month’s high profile defection of  Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino switching parties to pursue reelection as a Democrat and then Freeholder John Felice announced that he would not be pursuing reelection.

According to the BCRO, seven Republican candidates have registered to run for freeholder so far including incumbent Maura DeNicola. Other freeholder candidates include former freeholder John Driscoll, former congressional/assembly candidate Dierdre Paul, Closter councilman Robert DiDio and real estate agent and Soap Star Terri Peck.

The BCRO convention will be on March 15. and will select two out of the remaining six candidates to join DeNicola on the ballot for Felice’s seat and to challenge Democrat Tom Sullivan.

N.J. Uber drivers plan rate cut protest of their own

Marco Rubio Speech On Innovation At Uber's DC Offices

THE RECORD

Following the lead of angry Uber drivers in New York City, the ride-hailing service’s contract drivers in New Jersey are planning a work stoppage and demonstration next week to protest recent fare cuts, the head of a new statewide trade association said Tuesday.

Patrick J. McManus, president of the fledgling New Jersey App-Based Drivers Association, said Tuesday the trade group will meet Wednesday in Woodbridge to discuss plans to protest “probably on Monday,” at Uber’s New Jersey office in Hoboken. There are 13,000 Uber drivers in New Jersey.

If they do it would be the second such action in the New York metropolitan area this month. Hundreds of Uber drivers demonstrated this Monday in front of Uber’s New York City headquarters in Queens to protest the recent 15-percent rate cuts.

Rates paid to drivers who provide UberX service were cut 15 percent to 85 cents a mile throughout most of New Jersey Jan. 9 and drivers are very unhappy about it, said McManus. The Edison resident drives as an independent contractor for both Uber Technologies and its largest rival, Lyft.

“This is the third or fourth rate cut that [Uber’s] done,” McManus said Tuesday in a phone interview. “It’s a chase to the bottom. They are cheapening the job.”

America’s Largest Muslim Community Welcomes President Obama’s First Mosque Visit

OBAMA AND ECONOMY

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA seeks to strengthen interfaith relations

Ridgewood NJ, The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA looks forward to President Obama’s first mosque visit at the Islamic Society in Baltimore, MD. This visit comes at a time of rising Islamophobia and anti-Muslim violence. In an Oval Office address last December the President implored, “Muslim Americans are our friends, and neighbors; our co-workers, and sports heroes – and our men and women in uniform defending our country.” We welcome the President’s ongoing drive to build a strong relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims in America, as these efforts also strengthen national security.

“President Obama’s visit during tense times comes as a reassurance to all American Muslims,” said Dr. Nasim Rehmatullah, Senior National Vice President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, “that American Muslims are part and parcel of the American fabric. We will continue work together to make America a better and safer nation by inviting all Americans to stand united against extremism, and with the narrative of true Islam.”

What: President Obama’s first mosque visit in America

Where: Islamic Society, Baltimore, Maryland

When: 9 AM on Wednesday, February 3

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a dynamic, reformist and fast-growing international movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, the Community spans 207 nations with membership exceeding tens of millions. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, is among the oldest American-Muslim organizations.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long- awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival and moderation. He divested Muslims of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings.

Whoa… Doctor Links ADHD Diagnoses to Poor Parenting

Startling comments which go against conventional parenting tips.
Annie Holmquist | February 2, 2016

Dr. Leonard Sax has been making waves lately with his latest book, The Collapse of Parenting. The book’s basic premise is that American parents have failed to realize that they are their child’s authority, not their friend.

In an interview with NPR over the weekend, Dr. Sax again made some startling comments that go against conventional wisdom in today’s parenting, particularly in the realm of hyperactivity and anxiety disorders such as ADHD.

Although Dr. Sax believes that there are legitimate cases of ADHD, he also believes there are a number of false diagnoses. These diagnoses stem from:

Lack of respect for parents and over-reliance on friends.
Overindulgent parents who fail to establish appropriate limitations.

Dr. Sax explains further:
