Greek banks were on the brink of meltdown last night after the shock announcement that its crisis-hit government would hold a referendum on the terms of a fresh international bailout.
Long queues formed outside the country’s cashpoints after prime minister Alexis Tsipras accused the International Monetary Fund and eurozone of trying to blackmail his country – and pledged to give the Greek people the final say in a vote next weekend.
Mr Tsipras described the bailout plan as ‘humiliation’, condemned ‘unbearable’ austerity measures demanded by creditors and said he would campaign for a ‘no’ result.

Tom Andes put his mother’s Lyndhurst house on the market in late March — and had three offers after the first open house.
Andes sees a couple of reasons for the quick action: a low supply of homes on the market and a demand for properties that are an easy commute to New York City. And, he said, “we asked the right price” — $295,000.
Andes’ experience sums up some of the major trends of the spring market — a market that continues to recover from the worst housing downturn since World War II. The number of sales is up, as a stronger economy draws more first-time buyers — a population that largely had been unwilling or unable to buy — back into the market. And inventories are tight.
But buyers are still wary about overpaying, leaving median prices unchanged for the past year.
“Buyers are very price-conscious,” said George Rosko of Better Homes and Gardens Coccia Realty in Lyndhurst, who was the listing agent on the Andes house. “If you’re overpriced, people drive by.”
The spring selling season is an important barometer of the housing market because spring is when many buyers come out, in hopes of being in their new home by the time school starts in the fall. Several North Jersey agents say the winter’s cold, snowy weather delayed the start of spring activity.
Just change the municipality’s name to Ridgewood, and the Mayor’s name to Paul Aronsohn, and this letter would work perfectly. It appeared in today’s The Record.
Mahwah mayor
forgets whom he serves
I was coming of age during the Nixon administration, and although I was not old enough to vote, I knew even then that when political wrongdoing goes unaddressed, it compounds exponentially.
Much like President Nixon, Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet seems to have forgotten that he serves the people of Mahwah at the discretion of the people of Mahwah. His actions reflect upon the people of Mahwah. Neither I nor my Mahwah neighbors have abandoned due process.
I have no desire to change the township of Mahwah from a democratic republic to an autocratic government. The actions of the mayor suggest that such a change has taken place.
Mahwah is not a business, and it is not set up to run like a business. We have checks and balances, as do all levels of American government. For reasons that I do not understand, Laforet suggests that he runs Mahwah like a business, forgetting that there are procedures that need to be followed. Perhaps Laforet can save the township the embarrassment of a possible recall and, like Nixon, resign.

Those who want to discredit the United States and to deny our role as history’s most powerful and pre-eminent force for freedom, goodness and human dignity invariably focus on America’s bloody past as a slave-holding nation. Along with the displacement and mistreatment of Native Americans, the enslavement of literally millions of Africans counts as one of our two founding crimes—and an obvious rebuttal to any claims that this Republic truly represents “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” According to America-bashers at home and abroad, open-minded students of our history ought to feel more guilt than pride, and strive for “reparations” or other restitution to overcome the nation’s uniquely cruel, racist and rapacious legacy.
Unfortunately, the current mania for exaggerating America’s culpability for the horrors of slavery bears no more connection to reality than the old, discredited tendency to deny that the U.S. bore any blame at all. No, it’s not true that the “peculiar institution” featured kind-hearted, paternalistic masters and happy, dancing field-hands, any more than it’s true that America displayed unparalleled barbarity or enjoyed disproportionate benefit from kidnapping and exploiting innocent Africans.
An honest and balanced understanding of the position of slavery in the American experience requires a serious attempt to place the institution in historical context and to clear-away some of the common myths and distortions.
Pope Francis recently released a new encyclical. Portions of it deal with environmentalism, global warming, and climate change. Naturally, this has prompted controversy.
It’s noteworthy that Francis didn’t merely make a passing comment on global warming during this or that sermon, but that he issued a papal encyclical on the matter. Encyclicals are much more formal and significant than remarks made during mass. They are letters written by a pope and sent to bishops all around the world. In turn, the bishops are meant to disseminate the encyclical’s ideas to all the priests and churches in their jurisdiction, so that the pope’s teaching reaches every church-attending Catholic.
All this leads to the following question: Where is Pope Francis’ encyclical concerning the rampant persecution that Christians—including many Catholics—are experiencing around the world in general, the Islamic world in particular?
To be sure, the pope has acknowledged it. On April 21, during mass held at Casa Santa Marta, Francis said that today’s church is a “church of martyrs.” He even referenced several of the recent attacks on Christians by Muslims (without of course mentioned the latter’s religious identity).

Alex, a 23-year-old Sunday school teacher and babysitter, was trembling with excitement the day she told her Twitter followers that she had converted to Islam.
For months, she had been growing closer to a new group of friends online – the most attentive she had ever had – who were teaching her what it meant to be a Muslim. Increasingly, they were telling her about the Islamic State and how the group was building a homeland in Syria and Iraq where the holy could live according to God’s law.
One in particular, Faisal, had become her nearly constant companion, spending hours each day with her on Twitter, Skype and email, painstakingly guiding her through the fundamentals of the faith.
But when she excitedly told him that she had found a mosque just five miles from the home she shared with her grandparents in rural Washington State, he suddenly became cold.
The only Muslims she knew were those she had met online, and he encouraged her to keep it that way, arguing that Muslims are persecuted in the United States. She could be labeled a terrorist, he warned, and for now it was best for her to keep her conversion secret, even from her family.
So on his guidance, Alex began leading a double life. She kept teaching at her church, but her truck’s radio was no longer tuned to the Christian hits on K-LOVE. Instead, she hummed along with theISIS anthems blasting out of her turquoise iPhone, and began daydreaming about what life with the militants might be like.

Stephanie O’Connor is having her first solo show at The Stable’s gallery this month. The Paramus resident says that Ridgewood, with its strong arts community, is an exciting place to exhibit.
The paintings are in oil, large, bright and full of meaning.
“Since I have such deep ties to my Cuban roots, the suffering the Communist government has forced on the Cuban people inspires me to tell their story,” she said.
On display is “Libertad,” which means “freedom.” Her painting reflects the lack of freedom of speech or thought.
“Para Los Santos” is a painting showing Santeria – a combination of African-derived religion and Catholicism where saints and African gods are worshipped. The painting depicts the sacrifice of a chicken.

Four qualities have distinguished republican government from ancient Athens forward: the sovereignty of the people; a sense of the common good; government dedicated to the commonwealth; and resistance to corruption. Measured against the standards established for republics from ancient times, the American Republic is massively corrupt.
From Plato and Aristotle forward, corruption was meant to describe actions and decisions that put a narrow, special, or personal interest ahead of the interest of the public or commonwealth. Corruption did not have to stoop to money under the table, vote buying, or even renting out the Lincoln bedroom. In the governing of a republic, corruption was self-interest placed above the interest of all—the public interest.
By that standard, can anyone seriously doubt that our republic, our government, is corrupt? There have been Teapot Domes and financial scandals of one kind or another throughout our nation’s history. There has never been a time, however, when the government of the United States was so perversely and systematically dedicated to special interests, earmarks, side deals, log-rolling, vote-trading, and sweetheart deals of one kind or another.
What brought us to this? A sinister system combining staggering campaign costs, political contributions, political action committees, special interest payments for access, and, most of all, the rise of the lobbying class

Morristown Medical Center should pay property taxes on virtually all of its 40-acre property in town, a tax court judge ruled Friday in a decision closely watched by other hospitals across New Jersey.
Tax Court Judge Vito Bianco ruled that the hospital failed to meet the legal test that it operated as a non-profit, charitable organization for the tax years 2006 through 2008. Only the auditorium, fitness center and the visitors’ garage should not be assessed for property taxes, he said.
The decision, the hospital’s attorneys have said previously, could cost it $2.5 million to $3 million a year. The ruling applies only to the medical center’s property taxes, not to its federal tax status as a non-profit.
Other non-profits in New Jersey, especially hospitals and universities, have been concerned about the case, fearing that a ruling for the town – which also is in court for property taxes from the hospital for 2009 through 2015 — could encourage host municipalities to challenge their property tax exemptions as well.
In the Ridgewood News today ther is a story about a large turnout at the BOE meeting, complaining about class size.
In the same meeting someone complained that we do not have full day kindergarten. ( They somehow ignore the fact that the district will need more space and have to hire more teachers. One complains about the needs of working parents. I do not want to permanently share in the child care expenses of working parents. They work so they should pay for kindergarten enrichment classes if they think that their children need this to get into college)
We pay very high taxes, mostly for the schools. People keep moving to Ridgewood for the schools. There is a disincentive for people without children in the schools to stay in town – and the cycle of postgraduation home selling continues. This issue has been discussed on this blog but I think that it deserves as much attention as the high density housing and parking.
The council and BOE should get together and do some master planning for the schools. We can’t keep up with the wants and needs of the parents, the town does not exist to please the parents of school children. Something has to give!
The council should consider a tax incentive for residents who have lived in Ridgewood X number of years and no longer have dependents in the schools. The spiral of selling homes after graduation needs to end. I will probably sell my 5 bedroom home in the next few years. A family with 4 children would love to have this house and pay my taxes for the schools. At a cost of $17,000 per student the town will start losing money immediately. I will not stay and spend my savings to help prop up this system.
Where is the Master Plan for Ridgewood Public Schools?
According to Marshall Valuation Service (updated May 2015), the cost of multi-level parking structures range from $9,900/space to $21,500/space depending upon height and quality. We can assume in Ridgewood, it would be at the upper end of the range. But that’s just a rule of thumb. Marshall’s estimates the cost per square foot of gross building area at $92.12 per square foot, which is the cost before developer’s profit, and is the more accurate method. So what is the size of the proposed building? Using an average of 350 +/- square foot per space including an aisle would result in a per space price of $32,200. So $15,000,000 divided by $32,200/space results in a garage with 465 spaces. Does this math sound crazy yet? A 465 space garage sounds crazy, unbelievable and won’t look very good no matter how it is dressed up.
Discussion? No need for discussion! Gwenn, Paul, and Albert are our 3-person council. Ms. Gwenn might want to recall that she won by 6 votes, while Mike and Susan were voted in on a huge margin. It won’t be too much longer before sanity will rule again. No way are the thre of them getting re-elected
Let me make one thing perfectly clear: Paul Aronsohn and Albert Pucciarelli will not, I repeat WILL NOT, be swayed by public opinion, common sense, or realistic facts. They are going to build this god-forsaken garage and look out anybody who gets in their way. They feel this will make their mark in town. Yep, it will be a mark alright, a gigantic debt and a garage with so few cars in it that it will look like an abandoned property. But they won’t care. In a couple of years Aronsohn will be in DC (he hopes) working as a gopher for Hillary, and Pucciarelli will be living in MidlandPark, and we will be left with this mess, their legacy.
maybe, maybe Gwenn will decide to rein this project in and make it mor sensible and less colossal. Say what you will about Gwenn, but she of the three of them truly TRULY cares about Ridgewood. lately there have been glimmers of hope that she might be standing on her own away from the two of them on a couple of issues. Maybe she will back off on this folly. We can hope.
