Councilman’s question worth considering

to the editor:

During the June 3 Village Council work session, Councilman Michael Sedon asked if the salary of Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld should be reduced in order to offset the “six figure” salary of the newly created position of human resources director. Quite frankly, this question had been on my mind, and Councilman Sedon’s idea was, in my opinion, worth considering.

Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld’s reply included that she is not “outsourcing” any portion of her job, and that she is “still responsible” for human resources. Perhaps, but the fact remains that the overall salary now allocated to manage human resources has abruptly increased by at least $100,000.

Moreover, I was quite surprised to hear Ms. Sonenfeld state that her salary is “already down,” which was followed by a comment from Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck that she thinks Sonenfeld is “already the lowest paid manager in New Jersey,” and by Mayor Paul Aronsohn’s response that he “can’t imagine that [reducing her salary] would be the plan.”

Ms. Sonenfeld’s salary, established by Village Council members, is what she agreed to just over a year ago when she was hired. No one forced her to take the job or the salary. For her to now publicly complain that it is so low, so soon after she came on board, and especially when some of her responsibilities have now been delegated to a new hire, is quite disheartening.

Finally, Ms. Sonenfeld’s tone, when she replied to Councilman Sedon, coupled with the quick dismissal of Sedon’s suggestion by three of his colleagues, illustrates that civility is still not consistently practiced under Mayor Aronsohn’s leadership.

Assembly Republicans say Democrats, not Christie, to blame for N.J. economy

NJAssembly_Republicans_theridgewoodblog

TRENTON — Facing a difficult battle to take control of the lower house of the state Legislature in November, state Assembly Republicans defended Gov. Chris Christie’s stewardship of New Jersey’s economy on Thursday.

“Some people want to blame the governor. The governor has been the only thing between your wallet and the state Assembly Democrats, period,” Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick (R-Union) said at a press conference Thursday in front of the Statehouse, standing with several members of his caucus and a couple non-incumbent candidates.

“He’s vetoed or blocked all of the tax-raising attempts by the Democrats,” Bramnick said.

Democrats hold a 48-32 majority in the Assembly, and have been in command of the lower house since 2002. With just a few competitive Assembly races expected in November, most who pay attention to state elections give Republicans little chance of taking control.

Christie, a Republican, has an approval rating in the 30s in New Jersey as he travels around the country preparing for a widely expected run for president.

Federal data released Wednesday showed that New Jersey’s economy was one of the slowest growing in the nation in 2014.

Obamacare: It’s Still Unaffordable, Unworkable and Unfair

obamacare_theridgewood blog

COMMENTARY BY Ben Howe@BenHowe

Ben Howe is a contributor to The Daily Signal. He is the founder of Howe Creative, a video and film production company as well as a contributor and head writer for “Dana” on The Blaze TV.

Earlier this week, President Obama taunted the Supreme Court for taking up a challenge to Obamacare and boldly declared that his health care law is a success.

“What’s more, the thing is working,” Obama boasted to reporters. “I mean, part of what’s bizarre about this whole thing is we haven’t had a lot of conversation about the horrors of Obamacare because none of them come to pass.”

In reality, the president is willfully disregarding the facts and ignoring mounting evidence about the Affordable Care Act’s failures. Obamacare remains unaffordable, unworkable and unfair to the American people.

The Heritage Foundation decided to set the record straight for the president. This new video chronicles the problems playing out in states across America—many of which will be impacted by the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling in King v. Burwell.

Christie: Unions ‘need to get realistic’ on pensions, benefits

Chris Christie

AMES, Iowa — After winning a major ruling at the state Supreme Court allowing him to cut payments New Jersey’s pension system, Governor Christie had defiant words for labor leaders and Democratic leaders in the state Legislature on Thursday.

Christie, a Republican, called on public workers to accept reductions in their health benefits if they want to secure more funding for the troubled pension system. It is the only way forward, Christie said, because he will not raise taxes to fund the retirement system.  (Rizzo/The Record)

Obama-backed trade bill fails in the House

john_boehner_theridgewoodblog

By David Nakamura and Paul Kane June 12 at 2:22 PM

President Obama suffered a major defeat to his Pacific Rim free trade initiative Friday as House Democrats helped derail a key presidential priority despite his last-minute, personal plea on Capitol Hill.

The House voted 302 to 126 to sink a measure to grant financial aid to displaced workers, fracturing hopes at the White House that Congress would grant Obama fast-track trade authority to complete an accord with 11 other Pacific Rim nations.

“I will be voting to slow down fast-track,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on the floor moments before the vote, after keeping her intentions private for months. “Today we have an opportunity to slow down. Whatever the deal is with other countries, we want a better deal for American workers.”

The dramatic defeat could sink the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a sweeping free trade and regulatory pact that Obama has called central to his economic agenda at home and his foreign policy strategy in Asia. Obama’s loss came after a months-long lobbying blitz in which the president invested significant personal credibility and political capital.

Chris Christie Lays Out Education Plan

Chris_christie_theridgewoodblog

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey leaned on the podium with his right elbow, his standard let-me-give-it-to-you-straight stance, and gave one of his classic blunt warnings, this time setting up a nearly hourlong speech laying out his educational platform.

“It’s time we had a conversation about education that isn’t defined by ideological dogma or by narrow, personal, institutional interests,” Mr. Christie told the packed room at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. “Lets talk about what real educational reform for America looks like.”  (Corasaniti/The New York Times)

An arbitrary view of civility in Ridgewood

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

to the Editor:

The mayor continues to hold civility meetings, the purpose of which is unclear. Now it appears a subject of concern is sports conduct on and off the field.

Is this an appropriate topic for the council to be involved in?

I’ve been in town for 39 years and have attended numerous sporting events. On rare occasions there have been a few angry parents and a coach or two who has been asked to leave the field. Is anyone surprised? Nothing except maybe religion and politics gets people more excited than their kids and sports.

It happens at all levels and everywhere. We are not unique. Problems should be addressed when and where they happen. That being within the sports community.

At the last council meeting, the village manager accused a sitting council member of incivility for asking questions regarding the budget and a recent job hiring. It appears that this word is being used to inhibit the political process.

If asking questions, showing displeasure and disagreeing with the powers that be is considered uncivil, then we all need a civics lesson.

Webster’s 1913 definition of civility is: The state of society in which the relations and duties of the citizen are recognized and obeyed. Based on this definition, civility begins at the top and it is the common man who should be treated in a civil manner.

It is not easy to speak out and those that do should not be intimidated by some arbitrary view of what it means to be civil.

Ridgewood to designate funds for design, engineering of parking garages

As the concept of a new parking deck edges closer to becoming a reality, the Village Council has introduced a bond ordinance in the amount of $500,000 for pre-construction activities.

The ordinance was introduced unanimously on Wednesday night and designates money for the design and engineering phases of the project, which would follow a decision on the type of parking deck to be built. Two weeks ago, the village hired Walker Parking Consultants to perform a study of the Hudson Street lot to issue a report which will assist officials in making that determination.

Last week, council members discussed the bond for pre-construction costs and laid out an ideal timeline for completion of such activities, and a potential non-binding referendum in November for a garage on Hudson Street.

Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said the $500,000 figure was based on the approximately $467,000 spent by Millburn on design and engineering when it constructed a downtown parking deck a few years ago, along with the financing costs for the bond issue and the contract amount for Walker Parking Consultants.

If all goes according to plan, the village will have the results of the traditional versus automated parking deck study by the end of June or early July, said Sonenfeld. The council would then be able to decide what type of garage will be built and a request for proposal (RFP) can be advertised. With a design in hand by October or November, the construction can be bid and shovels would be in the ground after the winter thaw in 2016.

Planning Board decision on housing draws mixed reaction in Ridgewood

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Last week, the Ridgewood Planning Board ended a five-year process of work session meetings, testimony from experts, board deliberation and public comment hearings with the approval of a master plan amendment that will allow for higher density and mixed use housing projects in the Central Business District (CBD).

The amendment allows housing in the AH-2 zone, an affordable housing district encompassing the Brogan Cadillac site on South Broad Street, the B-3-R zone, which includes the Ken Smith property on Franklin Avenue and the section of North Maple Avenue between East Ridgewood and Franklin avenues, and the C-R zone, which is a small plot of land on Chestnut Street intended for commercial and mixed use development.

These zones will allow 30 units per acre of for-sale affordable housing and 35 units per acre of for-rent affordable housing and cap the height of the buildings at 50 feet. The original amendment allowed for as much as 50 units per acre, but was scaled back in a revised amendment presented to the Planning Board in late April.

Throughout the process, developers representing three potential housing projects presented testimony regarding their respective proposed developments. The projects presented were The Dayton, a 106-unit complex in the old Brogan Cadillac lot; the 52-unit Enclave proposed for the intersection of East Ridgewood and North Maple Avenues; and Chestnut Village, a 52-unit luxury development slated for Chestnut Street near the village’s central garage.

It is only a matter of time before the next recession strikes. The rich world is not ready

tidal-wave

Jun 13th 2015

THE struggle has been long and arduous. But gazing across the battered economies of the rich world it is time to declare that the fight against financial chaos and deflation is won. In 2015, the IMF says, for the first time since 2007 every advanced economy will expand. Rich-world growth should exceed 2% for the first time since 2010 and America’s central bank is likely to raise its rock-bottom interest rates.

However, the global economy still faces all manner of hazards, from the Greek debt saga to China’s shaky markets. Few economies have ever gone as long as a decade without tipping into recession—America’s started growing in 2009. Sod’s law decrees that, sooner or later, policymakers will face another downturn. The danger is that, having used up their arsenal, governments and central banks will not have the ammunition to fight the next recession. Paradoxically, reducing that risk requires a willingness to keep policy looser for longer today.

Reason Magazine Subpoena Stomps on Free Speech

Free_speech_theridgwoodblog

JUN 9, 2015 6:08 PM EDT
By Virginia Postrel

Wielding subpoenas demanding information on anonymous commenters, the government is harassing a respected journalism site that dissents from its policies. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York claims these comments could constitute violent threats, even though they’re clearly hyperbolic political rhetoric.

This is happening in America — weirdly, to a site I founded, and one whose commenters often earned my public contempt.

Los Angeles legal blogger Ken White has obtained a grand jury subpoena issued to Reason.com, the online home of the libertarian magazine I edited throughout the 1990s. The subpoena seeks information about commenters who posted in response to an article by the site’s editor Nick Gillespie about the letter that Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht wrote to Judge Katherine B. Forrest before she sentenced him to life in prison without parole. Ulbricht was convicted of seven felony charges, included conspiracies to traffic in narcotics and launder money, and faced a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison. The letter was an appeal for leniency.

Gillespie, who declined to comment on the subpoena, aptly described the letter as “haunting.” In it, Ulbricht expressed the libertarian ideals he said animated his creation of Silk Road — the same ideals that Reason upholds. The portion Gillespie reproduced reads:
