Ridgewood NJ,After a productive partnership spanning 70 years in their shared 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood facility, the Boards of Directors of the Ridgewood YMCA and YWCA Bergen County announce plans to restructure their joint operations.

While the Ridgewood YMCA will continue operations at 112 Oak Street, YWCA Bergen County will move its operations and services to a new, centrally located Bergen County headquarters with satellite programs in communities served. The transition period will begin in August 2018 and be completed in September 2018.

“The Ridgewood YMCA and YWCA Bergen County have decided this course of action to better serve our community while preserving the very important missions of our respective organizations,” said Ernest Lamour, CEO of the Ridgewood YMCA.

“We support the Ridgewood YMCA’s essential work as they do ours, and have mutually agreed to end our longstanding partnership so we can deepen and strengthen our commitments to our complementary but distinct missions,” said Helen Archontou, CEO of YWCA Bergen County. “We believe this thoughtful decision will help ensure that both organizations remain sustainable and relevant to the people we serve well into the future.”
The Ridgewood YMCA will expand its operations at 112 Oak Street and provide the same high-quality services that all members have come to expect and enjoy in youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. A future capital fundraising campaign will be explored, and with the support of the community, much needed facility upgrades and improvements will be made.

YWCA Bergen County will expand and enrich its core programs and services, including empowering women and girls with the tools they need to learn and grow, advocating for the equality of all people, supporting families with excellent child care and camps, enhancing the well-being of people of all ages and abilities, raising awareness to prevent sexual violence, and helping survivors heal.
Ridgewood YMCA and BFC members in good standing will continue their membership unchanged. YWCA Bergen County members will receive information specific to their memberships, and can contact questions@ywcabergencounty.org for assistance.

Meet our Newest Honoree

There’s Still Time to Nominate The Women Who Have Made the Difference to You and Your Organization

November 2, 2016—YWCA Bergen County is proud to congratulate our newest Tribute to Women of Influence (TWIN) 2016 Honoree and to welcome her into a pantheon of extraordinary TWIN women. Roseanne Buscemi, Oritani Bank’s Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer, is set to stand among this year’s honorees thanks to a generous sponsorship from Oritani Bank.

Among Roseanne’s many accomplishments, within Oritani Bank and beyond, she is Board of Directors President of the Center for Food Action. In fact, Rosanne gives tirelessly to other nonprofit organizations helping the region’s most vulnerable residents with basic needs. She leads Oritani’s annual summer drive to benefit multiple food banks in its coverage area. She has volunteered with Bergen Habitat for Humanity, and works with Oritani to raise funds and set up workdays for Habitat in the communities the bank serves. Roseanne is also a former instructor, a board member and current President of the North Jersey Institute of Financial Education. She serves as a deacon of the Reformed Church of Closter, and President of the Closter chapter of the American Association of University Women.

“Roseanne is a stunning example of what we mean by an empowered and an empowering woman,” said YWCA Bergen County CEO Helen Archontou. “Her contribution and willingness to help others help themselves set her apart as a woman of admirable generosity and, yes, of great influence in her community. We are so proud to honor Roseanne and our other remarkable TWIN Honorees as we continue this wonderful tradition.”
YWCA Bergen County is now accepting nominations from corporate and community leaders for its Tribute to Women of INfluence (TWIN) program. These honorees will be joining a growing list of “stand out” women, including the YW’s own honorees, founder and managing consultant of KEY HR Consulting, LLC and Mocha Moms member Tanisha Russell Day and owner and President of Belvedere Building and Contracting, Mary Anne Belvedere.

The TWIN 2016 Ceremony is set for December 1, 2016 (8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) at The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus at the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ.

The keynote speaker is Joann Lublin Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and management news editor at The Wall Street Journal and author of Earning It: Hard-Won Lessons from Trailblazing Women at the Top of the Business World

But, as always, the stars of the event are the year’s TWIN honorees! To nominate the deserving women in your life, a company or organization agrees to sponsor YWCA Bergen County TWIN. There’s still time!

The Birth of a Tradition: YWCA Bergen County Gears Up for a NEW TWIN

YWCA TWIN

October 1,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, YWCA Bergen County has announced the date and location of this year’s TWIN Celebration. The 41-year old tradition will continue on December 1, 2016 (8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) at The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus at Westfield Garden State Plaza.

The keynote speaker is Joann Lublin Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and management news editor at The Wall Street Journal and author of Earning It: Hard-Won Lessons from Trailblazing Women at the Top of the Business World (Author appearance made possible by Bookends Bookstore, Ridgewood, NJ).

In 1975, YWCA Bergen County (then known as YWCA of Ridgewood) launched an ambitious program that YW leaders called the TWIN Project. TWIN is an acronym for Tribute to Women and INdustry. The project was centered around a series of awards whose stated purpose was “to encourage women and girls to consider and prepare for a wider range of career opportunities in business and industry, and to stimulate, in a positive way, an increased awareness by more firms of the untapped managerial and professional resources represented by women.” TWIN was also a means “to recognize those firms whose progressive personnel policies made possible the achievements of our honorees.”
Clearly, the workplace has seen a seismic shift in the years since the YW founded the project. Among the country’s most influential companies, the Standard & Poor’s 500, women make up 45 percent of the labor force. And although as late as 1998 just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, the percentage of female Fortune 500 CEOs today hovers around 5 percent; women also constitute 15 percent of the senior leadership team at these firms. And overall in the U.S., more than half of all of management, professional, and related positions are held by women.
To quote a popular advertisement from back in the day, “You’ve come a long way, baby.”
This year, the organization has revised the name to reflect the project’s expanded focus. The Tribute to Women of INfluence will continue the YW’s practice of honoring the area’s top corporate women (as selected by their employers), but will now include women of high achievement and/or with extensive contribution to their communities.
On Thursday, December 1 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus, the YW will once again hold a TWIN celebration. The keynote speaker is Bergen County’s own Joann Lublin, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist at The Wall Street Journal and author of “Earning It: Hard-Won Lessons from Trailblazing Women at the Top of the Business World.” After her speech, Lublin will be available to answer questions and sign books.
But, as always, the stars of the event are the year’s TWIN honorees, who will share the spotlight in recognition of their achievements and work in their communities.

Cost: $125 per person

YWCA Bergen County Celebrating 95 Years of Walking the Talk
Honoring Extraordinary Bergen County Women Including Two Ridgewood ResidentsYWCA Bergen County has announced on May 9, 2016 the organization will mark its 95th anniversary with “95 Years of Walking the Talk: A Celebration of YWCA Bergen County,” at Seasons in Washington Twp., NJ.

This will be a unique event for YWCA Bergen County and for its supporters. “We are planning an elegant, full-scale celebration,” says CEO Helen Archontou. “We want to draw in the entire community—members past and present, young families, with a special focus on welcoming men—as we take this moment to celebrate all that we’ve been, all that we are, and all that we will be.”

At the heart and center of the celebration are four incredible women:

• Joan Groome, Executive Director of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce and former YW Development Director will be honorary legacy host. “Joan’s dedication to YWCA Bergen County helped build our organization and she continues to inspire us,” says YW CEO Helen Archontou.
• Ridgewood’s own Charlotte Samuels will receive YWCA Bergen County Young Leader Award. “Charlotte is an incredible young woman. Her achievements as an athlete and swimmer only begin to showcase her power and integrity.”
• Gina Plotino, a member of Women United in Philanthropy, and VP of Operations at Bergen County United Way will receive our YWCA Bergen County Beacon of Light Award for her dedication to lifting up and mentoring women and girls.
• Assemblywoman Valerie Vaineri Huttle will receive our YWCA Bergen County Woman of Action Award for her courageous work around key individual rights issues including ending campus sexual violence. Archontou says, “Valerie has been a friend to the YW and to all women as she courageously takes on the most meaningful battles.”

The program will also feature five “stand out” men from our community who will be there to “stand up” for Bergen County women.

Tom Toronto, President of Bergen County United Way; Anthony Cureton, President Bergen County, NJ NAACP; AJ Luna, Director of Bergen County, NJ Veterans
Services; Jeremy Lentz, Executive Director of the Teaneck International Film Festival; and Anthony Johnson, WABC-TV News journalist.

We will also take time out to “cut loose” on the dance floor. Arthur Murray Ridgewood has generously agreed to lead a special “Dancing through the Decades” feature.

Ridgewood resident Nell Doremus started the YW back in 1920 as a way to support single women who wanted to work and live on their own. Her dream has given way to a profound local legacy of service and support as YWCA Bergen County has pursued its mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, dignity, and freedom for all, spreading its work beyond Ridgewood and throughout Bergen County.

“We are so very excited about honoring these remarkable women and about this fundraising and awareness building celebration,” says Archontou. “It’s a chance to open the community’s eyes to the full range of our programs and services.”

YWCA Bergen County invites parents to ” Raising Children Who Want To Thrive” workshops.

YWCA BERGEN COUNTY INVITES PARENTS TO “RAISING CHILDREN WHO WANT TO THRIVE” WORKSHOPS

A three-part series designed to help parents meet the challenges of raising strong and healthy children in today’s world

Ridgewood, NJ–Jan. 22, 2014–YWCA Bergen County will host “Raising Children Who a want to Thrive”, a three-part workshop series designed to help parents support their children in meeting the challenges of growing up strong and healthy in today’s world. Workshops will be held on February 3, 10 and 24, 2014, from 6 to 8 pm at the YWCA Early Learning Center, 98 Pleasant Ave., Upper Saddle River, NJ.

“Many parents are struggling to communicate effectively with their children, and to know how to best to guide them in dealing with difficult issues on a daily basis,” said Helen Archontou, the YWCA’s Chief Executive Officer. “We feel that it’s important to offer programs like this that not only support parents, but empower them to make a tangible difference in their children’s lives.”

Microsoft Store

Licensed mental health professional, Rose Celia Rosato, MA, LPC, will combine presentations and interactive discussions as she leads parents through each workshop. “Our goal is to provide families with enhanced insight as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to encourage their children to want to thrive,” said Rosato.

Workshop 1 will focus on helping parents understand key factors that influence their child’s development and how parental guidance can encourage children to be strong and healthy. Workshop 2 will begin with a presentation on developmental milestones with a special emphasis on child development and self-esteem; parents also will privately fill out a questionnaire identifying specific issues pertaining to their child. The final workshop will include information on how parents can effectively communicate with their children and the opportunity to create a personalized plan for guiding their children based on individual needs.

The cost is $25 per workshop or $70 for the series (parents must take Workshop 1 in order to take 2 and 3). Onsite babysitting is available. For more information or to register, visit ywcaparentingworkshops.eventbrite.com or call 201-444-5600 ext. 400.
