Mahwah NJ, An overturned dump truck that was involved in a two (2) vehicle collision blocked three (3) travel lanes of Route 17 northbound in Mahwah on Monday afternoon, 01/09. Mahwah PD, FD, and EMS units responded to the incident along with a paramedic team from The Valley Hospital and several NJDOT crews. The dump truck’s driver was seriously injured and transported by ambulance to a hospital. the driver of the other vehicle involved in the mishap, a beige colored minivan, was not injured. Mahwah FD personnel attended to a crash related fluid spill. A flatbed tow truck removed the damaged minivan; a heavy duty wrecker was required to right the dump truck and remove it from the scene.

In the well-publicised deal, with Governor Christie, Democrat Senate President Steve Sweeney and Democrat Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto agreed to the huge gas tax increase.
Prices of regular unleaded gasoline in June were around $2.10 and now prices seem to have stabilized at $2.33. While other media sources are filled with wild stories of OPEC meddling and Russian hacking conspiracies, in the words of former President Bill Clinton its the “TAX” stupid.

Is tying the expiration date of driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations to a driver’s birthday the solution to easing long lines at state Motor Vehicle Commission agencies?
Two proposals with variations on that theme are winding through the New Jersey legislature.
One bill, proposed by state Senator Gerald Cardinale, R-Bergen, that would change when vehicle registrations expire, was approved by the state Senate Transportation Committee on Monday and heads to the full senate for a vote. An identical bill cleared the Assembly Transportation Committee in November.
That bill would make registrations expire on the numerical day that corresponds to the same number as vehicle owners date of birth, under his bill. In other words, if a driver was born on May 15 and their registration is set to expire in November, the date for the expiration would be Nov. 15.

Law enforcement has a number of informants working for it and the companies that already pay their paychecks, like UPS, for example. It also has a number of government employees working for the TSA, keeping their eyes peeled for “suspicious” amounts of cash it can swoop in and seize.
Unsurprisingly, the FBI also has a number of paid informants. Some of these informants apparently work at Best Buy — Geek Squad by day, government informants by… well, also by day.
According to court records, Geek Squad technician John “Trey” Westphal, an FBI informant, reported he accidentally located on Rettenmaier’s computer an image of “a fully nude, white prepubescent female on her hands and knees on a bed, with a brown choker-type collar around her neck.” Westphal notified his boss, Justin Meade, also an FBI informant, who alerted colleague Randall Ratliff, another FBI informant at Best Buy, as well as the FBI. Claiming the image met the definition of child pornography and was tied to a series of illicit pictures known as the “Jenny” shots, agent Tracey Riley seized the hard drive.
Not necessarily a problem, considering companies performing computer/electronic device repair are legally required to report discovered child porn to law enforcement. The difference here is the paycheck. This Geek Squad member had been paid $500 for digging around in customers’ computers and reporting his findings to the FBI. That changes the motivation from legal obligation to a chance to earn extra cash by digging around in files not essential to the repair work at hand.
More of a problem is the FBI’s tactics. While it possibly could have simply pointed to the legal obligation Best Buy has to report discovered child porn, it proactively destroyed this argument by apparently trying to cover up the origin of its investigation, as well as a couple of warrantless searches.

RIDGEWOOD NJ, Noted Muslim scholar Imam Zaid Shakir will deliver remarks addressing the theme, “Together in Hope,” as The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee of Ridgewood and Glen Rock marks the 35th year of its annual celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy. Sounds nice but what does Islam have to do with Martin Luther King Day and the struggles of black Americans to gain equality ?
The community is invited to attend this free event, which will take place on Monday, January 16 at the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton St., in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
We are told ; Imam Zaid Shakir, widely regarded as one of the most influential Muslim scholars in the West, will be the guest speaker during an interfaith worship service beginning at 10 a.m. The morning service will be followed by an outdoor rally at 11:30 a.m. and a community lunch at 12:15 p.m. The program will also feature Ridgewood and Glen Rock student speakers and musical performances by the Indian Hills Chamber Choir and Men of Umoja chorus.
“Imam Zaid Shakir is a highly respected voice on Islam and African-American issues and a leader in the emergence of a uniquely western Islamic tradition,” said committee co-chair Alice Newton. “At a time when civil rights issues dominate the headlines, we welcome his insights and inspiration as we share Dr. King’s hopeful message of finding common ground and working together to create positive change.”
A native of Berkeley, California, Imam Zaid Shakir is co-founder, trustee and a faculty member of Zaytuna College, the first Muslim liberal arts college in the United States. He accepted Islam in 1977 while serving in the United States Air Force, and co-founded and served as Imam of Masjid al-Islam in New Haven, Connecticut from 1988 to 1994. He was also an adjunct professor of Political Science and Arabic at Southern Connecticut State University until his departure for Syria to further his studies in the traditional Islamic sciences. Imam Zaid Shakir returned to the U.S. in 2001 and later moved back to California, where he co-founded Zaytuna College in Berkeley in 2009. He is a writer and a sought-after lecturer on African-American issues and Islam in the American context.
A little research turns up some interesting side notes ; Shakir, 54, was born Ricky Mitchell. He converted to Islam in 1977 while serving in the U.S. Air Force. An examination of Shakir’s writings and speeches, however, shows a man prone to conspiracy theories that veer toward extremism. Though his speaking style often is elliptical and rambling, and many of his points are not clearly defined, Shakir expresses doubts about who was responsible for 9/11 and other terrorist attacks. He defends terrorist groups such as Hizballah and hopes for a day in which America is a Muslim country ruled by Islamic law. Shakir also has a long record of portraying the United States as an evil force in world affairs. In his writings and speeches, Shakir often depicts the United States as an evil force in world affairs. Paramus NJ, Paramus PD issued at least one (1) summons to the adult female driver of a 4-door Honda Accord following a Saturday evening, 01/07 crash in which the vehicle wound up inside the Pier One Imports store located at 723 Route 17 South in Paramus. No one was injured in the incident and there appeared to have been no significant structural damage to the store. The vehicle was removed from the store’s interior by a tow truck. Paramus EMS responded as a precaution; a Borough of Paramus building sub-code official was also present on the scene. Traffic on nearby Route 17 southbound was unaffected by the incident

THE STORY OF THE 100 YEAR OLD BAT
In April 2000, I was fortunate enough to purchase a 100 year-old, wooden baseball bat at a bargain price. When the old Spalding® bat arrived, I immediately displayed it on the wall in our family room. I never imagined the bat would generate a story. Here’s what happened:
The bat’s unique, old-fashioned shape and brown patina mesmerized me. I noticed there were initials – RM – carved on the bottom of the bat. I wondered who RM was. How old was he when he received the bat? Did he hit any homeruns with it? What if RM became a major league player later in life and this was his bat when he was a kid?
That last question hit me like a line drive between the eyes. I imagined that the bat once belonged to Lou Gehrig when he was a kid. I then imagined what would happen if a child had the bat today and started using it in his games. Could the bat have special powers in the hands of an imaginative child?
The result of all this imagining is HITTING GLORY – A BASEBALL BAT ADVENTURE
Hackensack NJ, on Wednesday, the three Bergen County freeholders elected in November were sworn into office. Turning Bergen into the bluest of counties and making all county officials in Bergen, Democrats.
The annual reorganization meeting, Freeholders Mary J. Amoroso, Germaine M. Ortiz, and Thomas J. Sullivan were sworn in for their first full three-year terms. Freeholder Tracy Silna Zur–now entering her fifth year as freeholder–was elected as board chairwoman and Sullivan was selected as vice-chair.
The Democrats remained true to form and immediately began by raising what promises to be the first of many tax increases, the open-space tax.
The move increases the open-space tax back to 1 cent per $100 of assessed valuation, which is expected to bring in $12 million more annually for a popular program that had seen its funding cut by 75 percent in recent years.
While many embrace the idea of open space, the devil is as always in the details.Money is often used by the politicly connected for ball fields ie turf and to warehouse space, creating buffer zones for wealthy enclaves and keeping prime real-estate off the market so less desirable projects can not be built.
Washington Twp NJ, A Washington Township EMS ambulance transported the adult female driver of a 4-door sedan to Hackensack University Medical Center North following a crash on Washington Avenue near Pascack Road in Washington Township on Thursday evening, 01/05. The driver lost control of her vehicle, left the traveled roadway, and hit a tree before coming to a stop in a wooded area. The damaged vehicle was removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. Washington Township PD is investigating the incident. The victim sustained injuries that appeared to have been non life threatening.
Fair Lawn NJ, Fair Lawn PD and EMS responded to 22-03 Fair Lawn Avenue (the Dollar Tree store) on Thursday afternoon, 01/05 to investigate a telephoned report of an infant/toddler who had been left alone in a vehicle (a Mazda 6, 4-door sedan with NJ plates) for an extended period of time. The child was evaluated on scene by Fair Lawn EMS and determined to be fine. Fair Lawn PD reportedly contacted the NJ Division of Child Protection and Permanency with details of the incident. The child was observed being placed in the aforementioned vehicle by an adult male and driven from the scene.
Ho Ho Kus NJ, Ho-Ho-Kus firefighters used the “Jaws of Life” to extricate an adult female driver from a subcompact Ford that was involved in a two (2) vehicle rear end collision at the intersection of Sheridan Avenue and Enos Place on Thursday morning, 01/07. The victim was transported to a local hospital by a Ho-Ho-Kus EMS ambulance. The adult male driver of the other vehicle was uninjured and drove his vehicle away from the scene on its own power. The female victim’s car was removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. Ho-Ho-Kus PD is investigating the incident. Traffic on Sheridan Avenue in both directions between Hollywood Avenue and Enos Place was detoured while emergency crews worked.
Some businesses can’t handle the increased burdens.

David Joles/TNS/Newscom2017 ushered in minimum wage increases in 19 states, some more reasonable than others, and some of which are just the start of a series of massive jumps.
There will undoubtedly be “winners” and “losers” in these government-ordered increases, those who see actual raises vs. those who find jobs harder and harder to come by. And it’s going to be a challenge to evaluate what truly happened. We are seeing increased automation of low-level low-skilled service jobs. Jacking up the minimum wage is going to increase the speed by which it happens, but it would be foolish to think it wouldn’t eventually come regardless.
Houman Salem, who owns a small fashion house in the San Fernando Valley out in Los Angeles, took to the op-ed pages of the Los Angeles Times to explain why he’s packing up and moving out of California. Los Angeles famously decided to eventually jack up its minimum wages to $15 per hour and the entire state followed suit.
Salem’s commentary is particularly interesting because he writes about wages as a piece of a larger regulatory burden that affects his ability to do business. He explains that the minimum wage increase is the straw that broke the camel’s back because of how difficult California makes it to operate a business:
EDISON – New Jersey ranks No. 1 on the list of the most moved-from states in 2016, according to a study by the moving company United Van Lines released Tuesday.
It’s the fifth consecutive year the state ranks first.
The study found that 63 percent of moves in New Jersey were moves out of the state.

TRENTON — More than 600 people died in traffic accidents on New Jersey’s roadways last year, 8 percent more than in 2015 and the most deaths seen since 2011, according to preliminary State Police statistics.
After dropping to a 20-year low in 2013 when 542 people died in crashes and collisions, the fatalities have been steadily climbing, according to state police data released Tuesday.
In 2015, 562 died in vehicular accidents – six more than the previous year. But in 2016, 607 people, or 45 more, died in 2016.
I have loved the suburbs all my life. Very sad to watch them go. It hurts.What the hell is happening?
I could finally afford to move into a great suburb and now I hear that Glen Rock, Ridgewood, HHK are all building low income high density housing. What is the point of this? Why is this happening?
