Ridgewood NJ, To help promote the importance of the census, the Mayor’s Committee is sponsoring an essay contest for Ridgewood High School students with a $500 cash prize. Dear Ridgewood School Community,
While we have not received any official notification from the Governor, I sense that people are slowly coming to the conclusion that schools may not reopen and remote learning may continue for the duration of the school year. Governor Cuomo stated in one of his press conferences that particular challenges or events define many generations. The Spanish Flu, World War II, the Vietnam War, and 9/11 are examples of historical events that had a lasting impact; similarly, this global pandemic will be a landmark moment for this generation.

The Census is important. Click here to read Dr. Fishbein’s April column, which appeared in The Ridgewood News. Also, see the attached flyer about the Be Safe; Be Counted Zoom event that is being hosted by the Ridgewood Public Library tonight at 7:00 pm. Don’t forget to send your redacted “receipt” to your principal or just let your principal know it is complete. Let’s see which school has the highest percentage of completed questionnaires. If you have multiple children in a school, each one counts. If you have children in multiple schools, send the receipt to each principal.

Ridgewood NJ, we are all home schoolers now and you probably saw the recent issue of Harvard Magazine, which took a largely unsubstantiated broadside against homeschooling. Lindsey M. Burke, Ph.D.Director, Center for Education Policy recently released a review of the literature on the outcomes of students who homeschool – which paints a completely different – positive picture. As she explains, “among those who choose to homeschool, the positive effects are demonstrable. Although study designs limit researchers’ ability to draw a causal connection, it is clear the homeschooling population experiences positive academic outcomes.” Specifically:

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood students Maiah Riedel and Emily Scharfenberg won Middle School Best Film at the Count Basie Teen and College Film Fest 2020 for their documentary, Unbridled.
The film was showcased at this year’s virtual film fest, which ran from March 30 through April 6. The two student filmmakers attend Benjamin Franklin Middle School (BF), where they have been active members of the Film Club for the past two years. Unbridled is the story of a Mustang training and rescue facility located in Allendale that also serves as a wellness center for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Yet contributions by active teachers and state government amount about $2.8 billion annually, leaving a $1.7 billion deficit. When the market is good, investment returns help make up the difference. For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2018, for instance, a nearly 10 percent market gain generated $2 billion, which the fund largely used to pay retirees. This year, however, market gains have largely evaporated for everyone.

Dear Ridgewood School Community,
Last week, Governor Murphy announced that he would provide more information about the length of our school closure by May 15. I know many of us wanted to hear more concrete information about whether schools would reopen this year. While I also want to know, I understand this incremental decision making. I must admit that I will be pleasantly surprised if we open this year. Based on information reported in the news, many things have to happen before we can open as a society; this includes opening schools, which by their very nature are large group gatherings. I bring this up so that during this time of uncertainty, you are prepared for continued widespread school closures and social distancing.

Ridgewood NJ, time to start laying public school teachers and other non essential state workers, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has made the decision to keep New Jersey’s schools closed for at least four more weeks.

Dear Ridgewood School Community,
This afternoon, Governor Murphy announced that schools will remain closed through at least Friday, May 15, to help continue to flatten the curve and slow the transmission of coronavirus. This decision was made in careful consultation with the New Jersey Department of Health and the New Jersey Department of Education, as well as other key stakeholders. With over 75,000 cases of COVID-19 in New Jersey, we must all work together by social distancing and following the guidelines to help curtail the spread of this disease.
