Trenton NJ, after a lengthy and contentious debate, a contentious bill aiming to overhaul New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act (OPRA) took a step forward on Monday night. Advocates from various organizations, including Alex Ambrose of the New Jersey Policy Perspective, voiced their opposition to the proposed legislation during a marathon committee meeting of the state Senate Budget Committee. Ambrose and many others argued that the bill, which seeks to restrict public access to government documents and information, would create additional barriers for citizens seeking transparency in government operations. Despite the overwhelming opposition voiced during the hearing, the committee voted 9-4 to move the bill forward for further consideration by the full state Senate.
