Billionaire Warns: Yellen Collapse ‘Will Be Unlike Any Other’

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen

Billionaire Warns: Yellen Collapse ‘Will Be Unlike Any Other’

Another horrific stock market crash is coming, and the next bust will be “unlike any other” we have seen.

That’s the message from Jeremy Grantham, co-founder and chief investment strategist of GMO, a Boston-based firm with $117 billion in assets under management.

Grantham pulls no punches when assigning responsibility for the coming financial carnage. In a recent interview with The New York Times, he calls Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen “ignorant” and says the Federal Reserve all but killed the economic recovery.

Grimly, he adds, “We have never had this before. It’s going to be very painful for investors.”

Grantham isn’t the only one worried about a market collapse.

“We have no right to be surprised by a severe and imminent stock market crash,” explains Mark Spitznagel, a hedge fund manager who is notorious for his hugely profitable billion-dollar bet on the 2008 crisis. “In fact, we must absolutely expect it.”

Billion-dollar investor Warren Buffett is rumored to be preparing for a crash as well. The “Warren Buffett Indicator,” also known as the “Total-Market-Cap to GDP Ratio,” is breaching sell-alert status and a collapse may happen at any moment.

So with an inevitable crash looming, what are Main Street investors to do?

Gov. Rick Perry deploying up to 1,000 National Guard troops to border

Gov. Rick Perry deploying up to 1,000 National Guard troops to border
ByREBECCA KAPLANCBS NEWSJuly 21, 2014, 4:34 PM

Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, announced Monday that he is activating up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as he accuses the federal government of offering “lip service” on border security.

The announcement comes as the Obama administration is still struggling to deal with the influx of more than 50,000 unaccompanied minors, most from Central America, who have crossed into the United States in the past year. The additional resources are not aimed at the children themselves, Perry said, describing them instead as a “force multiplier” to help the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) “combat the brutal Mexican drug cartels that are preying upon our communities.”

“I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor. We are too good of a country,” Perry said.

The troops could detain people if asked, Texas Adjutant General John Nichols said at the press conference with Perry, but they are planning to play a “referring and deterring” role by deterring cartels with their visible presence and referring any immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally to DPS.

Perry orders troops to border
By Mike Lillis

Texas Governor Rick Perry announced Monday that he’s deploying as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to help manage the surge of child migrants at the state’s southern border.

Perry, among the most vocal critics of President Obama’s handling of the crisis, said the extra force is needed to deter the wave of immigrants, safeguard Americans from crime and protect taxpayers from the costs of managing the new arrivals.

“I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor,” Perry said at a briefing in Austin. “The price of inaction is too high for Texans to pay.”

Perry’s move came just hours after the White House announced that the number of unaccompanied minors arriving at the border is dropping – from 355 per day in June to 150 in early July, according to spokesman Josh Earnest.

Earnest said the reasons for the drop remain unclear, but suggested the administration’s efforts “to work with Central American leaders to publicize the dangers of the journey” have contributed significantly.

Perry on Monday acknowledged the drop in the new arrivals in recent weeks, but he offered a different theory for the trend, saying it was a “clear indication” that local, state and federal law enforcement efforts are working.

“I Was Absolutely Shocked At What I Read,” Congressman Calls For Release Of Secret 9/11 Documents

Earlier this year, Reps. Walter B. Jones, R-N.C., and Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., were given access to the 28 redacted pages of the Joint Intelligence Committee Inquiry (JICI) of 9/11 issued in late 2002, which have been thought to hold some answers about the Saudi connection to the attack.

“I was absolutely shocked by what I read,” Jones told International Business Times. “What was so surprising was that those whom we thought we could trust really disappointed me. I cannot go into it any more than that. I had to sign an oath that what I read had to remain confidential. But the information I read disappointed me greatly.”

The public may soon also get to see these secret documents. Last week, Jones and Lynch introduced a resolution that urges President Obama to declassify the 28 pages, which were originally classified by President George W. Bush. It has never been fully explained why the pages were blacked out, but President Bush stated in 2003 that releasing the pages would violate national security.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Ma) Defines Today’s Progressivism

warren-e1399863802301

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Ma) Defines Today’s Progressivism
By Hunter Lewis
Sunday, July 20th, 2014

Warren reviewed eleven tenets of contemporary progressivism in a July 18 speech before Netroots Nation . She should be commended. Very often progressive politicians prefer to talk about “hope and change” rather than what they really stand for. Her list is not free of exaggerated rhetoric, such as claiming the mantle of “science” for herself. When she talks about supporting fast food workers on picket lines, she doesn’t mention the millions she is collecting from labor unions. But, even so, her account contains some honest and useful information.

1. “We believe that Wall Street needs stronger rules and tougher enforcement, and we’re willing to fight for it.”

2. “We believe in science, and that means that we have a responsibility to protect this Earth.”

3. “We believe that the Internet shouldn’t be rigged to benefit big corporations, and that means real net neutrality.”

4. “We believe that no one should work full-time and still live in poverty, and that means raising the minimum wage.”

5. “We believe that fast-food workers deserve a livable wage, and that means that when they take to the picket line, we are proud to fight alongside them.”

6. “We believe that students are entitled to get an education without being crushed by debt.”

7. “We believe that after a lifetime of work, people are entitled to retire with dignity, and that means protecting Social Security, Medicare, and pensions.”

8. “We believe—I can’t believe I have to say this in 2014—we believe in equal pay for equal work.”

9. “We believe that equal means equal, and that’s true in marriage, it’s true in the workplace, it’s true in all of America.”

10. “We believe that immigration has made this country strong and vibrant, and that means reform.”

11. “And we believe that corporations are not people, that women have a right to their bodies. We will overturn Hobby Lobby and we will fight for it. We will fight for it!”

Here are a few questions for Warren.

1.  Since you are willing to fight for stronger rules and tougher enforcement for Wall Street, are you willing to fight for an end to government bail-outs? How will you end them if Wall Street is operated as a subsidiary of Washington? How will you end them if Washington needs big Wall Street firms to buy its bonds with money created by Washington, since Washington is barred from buying its own bonds directly but can do so indirectly through Wall Street? In general, how will you keep government control from wrecking the internal disciplines of the market, which include loss and bankruptcy as well as profit?

2. How will an increase in the minimum wage help those who can’t get any job because of the minimum wage? How will this help teenagers or other young people get their first job?

One of your favorite presidents, Franklin Roosevelt, intervened to keep wages high during the Great Depression. The result was that those who succeeded in keeping their jobs were even better off than before while millions of others were thrown out of work and had nothing.

3. Hasn’t the federal student loan program driven up the cost of a college education, leaving many students worse off than before it existed?

And why is the federal government borrowing at a low interest rate and then charging the students a much higher rate? How can it be right to make a profit off the students and then apply it to the federal budget under a line called “ deficit reduction.”

4. Since you hold that “equal means equal… in all of America,” why do federal programs discriminate in favor of one group over another? Why, to choose just one of many examples, are non-unionized companies barred from federal construction contracts?

5. If corporations are not people, does that mean the government can not only tell them what to do, but even gag them or tell them what to say?

Having reviewed what Warren believes to be the eleven tenets of contemporary progressivism, what does she think that conservatives and libertarians believe? Here it is: “I got mine. The rest of you are on your own.”

Is this what either conservatives or libertarians teach? Is this what markets teach? They teach us to be selfish? Or do they teach us that we had better put our selfishness aside and tend to the needs of customers and employees first if we want to be successful?

People who run businesses are serving the needs of others. And people who work for the government may be just as selfish as anybody else.

Did Senator Warren describe all the tenets of contemporary progressivism? No, she described the ones she wanted to describe. But it’s helpful to have her eleven.

Procession for Fallen Waldwick Police officer
July 21,2014
Ridgewood Police Department

Ridgewood N, The Waldwick Police Department would like to thank all of our residents, neighbors and friends for their support during this difficult time. The outpouring of that support has been incredibly comforting to Officer Goodell’s family and his police department family.

On Monday July 21, 2014 at 1pm, there will be a procession to bring Officer Goodell to St. Luke’s Church on Franklin Tpke in HoHoKus. The procession will enter Waldwick from Wyckoff, via Wyckoff Avenue. It will continue on Wyckoff Avenue to Hopper Avenue and turn left; continue to Franklin Turnpike in Allendale and make a right; continue to Grove Street and make a left turn; right turn onto Centre Street and a right turn onto E.Prospect Street. The procession will stop for a brief pause in front of the Public Safety Building, before making a left turn onto Franklin Turnpike and continuing to St. Luke’s Church. Visitation will begin at approximately 2pm. It is recommended that anyone wishing to view the procession should assemble in front of Waldwick High School or in the area of the Public Safety Building.

Over the past several days, we have been preparing for Officer Goodell’s services with the assistance of countless local and county agencies. The wake will be from 2pm to 9pm on Monday and the Funeral Mass will be at 11am on Tuesday, both at St. Luke’s Church in HoHoKus. It is anticipated that several thousand people will be paying their respects to Officer Goodell on Monday and Tuesday. That being said, traffic and parking are going to be issues that we all need to contend with. There will be traffic delays and periodic road closures. We have arranged for Bergen Community College to be the main parking area for anyone wishing to attend the services. Buses will be available to transport people to and from St. Luke’s Church. We have made special parking and transportation accommodations for Waldwick residents only. In order to ease our transportation concerns, we are asking that everyone adhere to the plans that we have prepared.

THE RECORD

They were built to protect American soldiers in overseas war zones, multi-ton behemoths encased in enough steel to shield occupants from roadside bombs.

Now, a move to bring two of the surplus armored military vehicles to Bergen County is the latest battleground in a tug of war over law enforcement between the county’s top two elected officials.

Sheriff Michael Saudino has requested two of the vehicles known as MRAPs — “mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles” — from the U.S. Department of Defense under a program that makes them available to law-enforcement agencies for free.

But County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan has tried to hit the brakes, urging the Freeholder Board to rescind a resolution endorsing Saudino’s plans.

“They are combat vehicles,” said Jeanne Baratta, Donovan’s chief of staff. “Why do we need a combat vehicle on the streets of Bergen County?”

Internet rules stir passionate debate

The Federal Communications Commission is being bombarded with passionate calls for a wholesale change to the way the Internet is regulated.

While reclassifying Internet providers to treat them like phone companies would be an uphill political battle, companies, lawmakers and members of the public are pressing the agency to do it anyway.

The FCC has received more than 1 million comments about its proposed rewrite of net neutrality rules. Amid profanity-filled diatribes and threats against FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, many of the comments ask the agency to change the way it regulates Internet providers.

Under the agency’s old net neutrality rules, Internet providers were regulated as “Title I” or “information” services.

Phone companies, in contrast, are classified as “Title II” or “telecommunications” services, meaning they are regulated more like utility companies.

While Wheeler initially focused on rewriting the net neutrality rules under Section 706 of the Telecommunications Act, he began focusing more seriously on reclassification after a backlash from Democrats on the Commission and on Capitol Hill.

The pressure from lawmakers and industry players — including Internet companies such as Netflix and Mozilla — has intensified since May, when the FCC voted to move ahead with Wheeler’s plan to rewrite the net neutrality rules, which

Deadly mosquito virus reported in eastern Mass.
By Nick BanninPublished: July 19, 2014, 12:39 pm Updated: July 19, 2014, 9:48 pm

LONGMEADOW, Mass (WWLP) — While Saturday wasn’t too hot or humid, like most of our summer has been, 22News found that our recent weather conditions have contributed to the arrival of a potentially deadly disease in the Bay State.

Mosquitoes: we’ve talked about them for months, and for the first time this year mosquitoes have infected someone in Massachusetts with eastern equine encephalitis, or triple E.

The Massachusetts Department of Health just confirmed that a July 15th laboratory test in Plymouth County has tested positive for EEE, a dangerous virus that can cause inflammation of the brain and in one third of cases, death.

Even though the only reported case of EEE in Massachusetts was more than 80 miles to our east, our chances in western Massachusetts of getting it just went up. But it probably wouldn’t be the mosquitoes bringing it here.

Birds are typically the long range carrier of triple E, taking the disease over many miles. Mosquitoes then bite the birds and become the local source for infection when they bite a human.

Entomologist Bob Russell of American Pest Solutions told 22News, “Mosquitoes are an unusual insect because bacteria can survive in its gut and then it can be regurgitated or come out in its saliva when it bites, and that’s how you get transmission.”

The best defense against EEE is avoiding a mosquito bite. Wearing long clothes, avoiding wooded or wet areas and wearing bug spray with the chemical DEET should help with that.

After Asking Employees to Reveal Personal Beliefs, Chase Faces Boycott

After Asking Employees to Reveal Personal Beliefs, Chase Faces Boycott
Kelsey Harkness / @kelseyjharkness / July 18, 2014

Over 4,000 Americans have signed a petition to boycott Chase bank over a company survey that probed employees about their sexual orientation and personal beliefs.

The National Organization for Marriage’s campaign “Void Chase,” urges customers across the globe to take their banking business elsewhere until JPMorgan Chase apologizes and promises “never again to invade the privacy of your employees in this way.”

The effort is the result of an invasive survey that asked whether Chase employees identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, or an “LGBT ally.”

Robert P. George, a law professor at Princeton University and co-author of a book on the definition of marriage, first reported on the survey on his law blog, Mirror of Justice, after a JPMorgan Chase employee brought it to his attention.

The petition, addressed to JPMorgan Chase’s CEO and Board of Directors, says the survey “creates a menacing and hostile environment for employees who may not answer in the politically approved way.”

It also asserts the LGBT questions “violated for both your employees and consumers the central value in any banking relationship – trust.”

>>Why Is Chase Bank Asking Intrusive, Personal Questions of Employees? Santorum Responds

Brian S. Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, said as part of the “Void Chase” campaign, he’s moving his home mortgage – currently held by Chase – to another bank.

“This situation is unacceptable and deplorable, and a clear message must be sent that it simply will not be tolerated,” he said in a prepared statement.

Human Rights Campaign, which calls itself the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization in the nation, reacted to NOM’s petition:

This week, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) announced an international boycott of JPMorgan Chase for having the nerve to ask employees to fill out a voluntary and confidential survey that included a question asking whether or not they considered themselves an ally of the LGBT community. No action has been taken against any employee based on the survey results. No retaliation has occurred. JPMorgan Chase has not given any indication that they have any intention of doing anything with the information.

Although the banking giant told The Daily Signal the survey was “completely voluntary and anonymous,” multiple whistleblowers said they were required to enter their employee IDs.

“Employees were required to identify themselves with their employee Standard ID Number prior to taking the survey,” one Chase employeetold NOM.

Another source, who asked not to be identified for fear of losing employment, expressed outrage over the inquiry on Mirror of Justice:

Not selecting that option is essentially saying ‘I’m not an ally of civil rights,’ which is a vague way to say ‘I’m a bigot. The worry among many of us is that those who didn’t select that poorly placed, irrelevant option will be placed on the ‘you can fire these people first’ list.

JPMorgan Chase is one of the largest financial institutions in the world, with 260,000 employees in more than 60 countries. Chase is its U.S. customer and commercial banking unit, with 185,000 U.S.-based employees.

Among its diversity programs is PRIDE, an international LGBT networkthat offers employees “tools and opportunities for personal career development, including mentoring programs and professional forums.”

Joe Grabowski, director of communications at NOM, told The Daily Signal that Chase owes its employees and customers a sincere apology.

These were inappropriate questions to be asking of employees, especially when there was confusion and doubt about how the information was going to be used in a corporate climate that is very openly pro-LGBT, as Chase bank is.

Grabowski also called on the banking giant to tell employees and customers “what exactly that information is going to be used for.”

When contacted multiple times by The Daily Signal, Chase refused to comment on the petition.

“Each day they refuse to answer questions about this, it further damages their trustworthiness and their credential with the public,” Grabowski said.
