Ridgewood 12U Little Leaguers capture district baseball championship

If it’s possible for a group of 11- and 12-year-olds to be a bunch of experienced, battle-hardened competitors, the Ridgewood American 12-and-under baseball team would certainly fit that description.

The squad will attempt to continue to live up to that reputation in the state sectional tournament after defeating Ramsey, 14-3, last Saturday at Dumont to take home the District 4 Little League championship, just a day after falling to the same team in the double-elimination tournament.

Ridgewood has grown accustomed to performing in the playoff spotlight and, in particular, the District 4 tournament after winning the 10U and 11U titles the previous two seasons.

“As 10-year-olds, we went to the state championship,” manager Matt Sullivan said Monday. “They know what the Little League tournament is all about, and they recognize the significance of it. You always have those peaks and valleys throughout the season, but come Little League [tournament] time, they’re always ready to play.”

Ridgewood certainly showed it was ready for tournament play this year, going 5-1 in the district bracket while outscoring its opponents, 57-11.

OECD Fears Middle Class Civil Unrest Is Coming

by Tyler Durden on 07/18/2014 14:49 -0400

This idea that we live in a world where government cares about us is just the biggest propaganda ever. Everyone one will only pursue their own self-interest.The OECD has interesting come out and warned that if governments are unable to stop the transfer of wealth to a small financial elite, the displeasure of the dispossessed middle class could easily turn and go against the prevailing governmental systems. The OECD has claimed to have discovered the existence of a veritable “lumpenproletariat” in the supposedly rich Germany. Even though the systems attempt to provide citizens with bread and circuses in the traditional Roman style to keep them quiet, such  tactics they warn may have now become obsolete after the ultimate circus is over – the World Cup.

The problem with all of these studies is the look at class warfare and not at the consumption of government. They do not follow the breadcrumbs. What if you take everything from the elites? Who will start businesses to create jobs? Who will be left to take as government pensions keep ticking away. In Germany, it has now surpassed 50% of the average persons labor goes to taxes.

There are a host of books coming out all about just taxing the rich more ignoring reducing the cost of government. The German bestseller “The plunder of the world” presents just another socialist agenda arguing that the rich get richer even in times of crisis, while the consequences of a crisis are always carried by the lower-income groups and the middle class. It fails to explain that the rich get richer from investment, not wage income. This is an argument to effective tax investment substantially to even out the disparity? But who then creates the jobs that produce anything? Is it that those who invest unfairly make money when the others pay too much in taxes and do not invest? Anyone who thinks that these books are real must be insane. If you think for one second raising the taxes on the rich will mean your taxes will decline – good luck. In Germany, Tax Freedom Day has passed the 50% and even in Canada it is now June 9, 2014. In the United States it is April 21st for 2014.

The Dogma Business

The Goldberg File
By Jonah Goldberg
National Review
July 18, 2014

Dear Reader (including the president of the United States whenever he gets to this after dealing with many important fundraisers),

If you’ve been reading my stuff over the years, you’ll find a number of common themes (“And recycled jokes. Let’s not forget those.” — The Couch). One such theme is that liberalism hides behind seemingly value-neutral or benign language in order to advance a value-laden and not necessarily benign agenda. That was the basic idea behindThe Tyranny of Clichés. Conservatives argue as conservatives. Liberals tend to argue not so much as liberals, but in a variety of disguises, each of which tries to draw on authority unearned by liberalism itself. Indeed, the history of American liberalism can be understood as a series of costume changes. A new nominally non-ideological discipline emerges— political science, engineering, public health, psychology, environmentalism, neuroscience and, these days, various forms of data prestidigitation — and liberals flock to it. They don the latest fashionable version of the white smock and say— à la Bill Murray in Ghostbusters — “back off man, we’re scientists.” Or to be more fair, they claim to be speaking for the scientists, engineers, psychologists, and other experts. “We’re not ideologues, we go with the facts.” This game was old when Walter Lippmann came out with his Drift and Mastery. After all, Karl Marx, the Babe Ruth of this sport, had long before insisted that his shtick wasn’t opinion or even mere analysis, but a new science.

In 1962, John F. Kennedy delivered the commencement address at Yale. He explained that “political labels and ideological approaches are irrelevant to the solution” of today’s challenges. At a press conference the same year, he expanded on the idea. “Most of the problems . . . that we now face, are technical problems, are administrative problems.” These problems “deal with questions which are now beyond the comprehension of most men” and should therefore be left to the experts to settle without subjecting them to divisive democratic debate.

Today, the political landscape is littered with earnest, well-intentioned, and often, incredibly sanctimonious liberals who insist that they are simply pursuing truth and fact regardless of ideology. This, of course, remains Obama’s favorite pose. It runs through the “scientific consensus” argle-bargle on global warming. When Chris Hughes took over what has long been considered the flagship magazine of American liberalism, he ridiculously vowed that, “the journalism in these pages will strive to be free of party ideology or partisan bias.” The same conceit is behind Vox.com and “explanatory journalism,”which everyday sinks further and further into liberal Ronburgundyism. (Coming soon at Vox: “Fifteen Reasons Why San Diego Really Does Mean ‘Whale’s Vagina’ in German — And Why That Has To Change.”)

It’s Biden’s Party

Speaking of Ron Burgundyism, remember Joe Biden’s vice-presidential debate with Paul Ryan? He’d flash those teeth like a flounder that accidentally picked up a set of dentures. He’d laugh like the crazy guy on the bus who knows the driver is really following the chem trails in the sky because you can still get a Snickers bar for less than a dollar. He’d guffaw at any suggestion he or the president did anything wrong — ever— and shout “malarkey” at the idiots and knaves who thought otherwise. And, sadly, it largely worked. I’m beginning to think Biden was simply ahead of his time. So much of elite liberalism these days is little more than bluster and self-satisfied blather.

For instance, I am so disappointed in John Oliver’s HBO show, Last Week Tonight. I like Oliver’s stand-up and his stints on Community. But his approach is simply Bidenism refined. The show begins from the premise that liberal conventional wisdom is not only right but obviously so and then simply works backward to “prove it.” In Britain, populist tabloids are condemned by people of Oliver’s persuasion for simply confirming the prejudices of the working class. Last Week Tonight is a similar effort for the more upscale — and often more prejudiced — HBO demographic. He doesn’t tell his audience anything it doesn’t want to hear, he just gives them new and occasionally funny reasons to feel good about themselves. The only difference between his show and the typical MSNBC host’s is that Oliver is funny on purpose.

The Dogma Business

Anyway, I kind of wandered off from where I planned on going with all of this. For the record, I’m not saying that politicians, pundits, and other partisans should not consult the opinions of scientists and other experts. Of course they — we — should. We learn new and interesting things all of the time. What I am saying is that liberalism is constantly rebranding itself as solely an explanation of reality and it constantly needs to rebrand itself because reality keeps revealing that it isn’t.

What worries me — a lot — is that reality is coming to the rescue of liberalism. No, I don’t mean that the crooked timber of humanity has grown straight or that it now makes sense that the Pentagon hold bake sales to pay for bombers. What I mean is that progressives are quicker to seize on the political opportunities created by a changing culture.

What is commonly called “political correctness” doesn’t get the respect it deserves on the right. Sure, in the herstory of political correctness there have been womyn and cis-men who have taken their seminal ovulal ideas too far, but we should not render ourselves visually challenged to the fact that something more fundawomyntal is at work here.

Political correctness can actually be seen as an example of Hayekian spontaneous order. Society has changed, because society always changes. But modern American society has changed a lot. In a relatively short period of time, legal and cultural equality has expanded — albeit not uniformly or perfectly — to blacks, women, and gays. We are a more heterodox society in almost every way. As a result, many of our customs, norms, and terms no longer line up neatly with lived-reality. Remember customs emerge as intangible tools to solve real needs. When the real needs change, the customs must either adapt or die.

Many conservatives think political correctness forced Christianity and traditional morality to recede from public life. That is surely part of the story. But another part of the story is that political correctness emerged because Christianity and traditional morality receded. Something had to fill the void.

I wish more conservatives recognized that at least some of what passes for political correctness is an attempt to create new manners and mores for the places in life where the old ones no longer work too well. You can call it “political correctness” that Americans stopped calling black people “negroes.” But that wouldn’t make the change wrong or even objectionable. You might think it’s regrettable that homosexuality has become mainstreamed and largely de-stigmatized. But your regret doesn’t change the fact that it has happened. And well-mannered people still need to know how to show respect to people.

Identity politics is only part of the story, and not even the most important part. Medical, technological, and economic changes are almost surely far more important than changing demographics alone. A society where individuals are vastly more autonomous than they were a century ago is simply going to have different codes of conduct and manners. The telephone, television, and the car did more to liberate young people from the moral cocoon of their families and communities than any libertine intellectual fad (you can be sure that driverless cars, for instance, will change society inunimaginable ways). Democrats recognize this, which is why they’ve cynically exploited changes in family structure, female labor participation, and reproductive technology and declared that Republicans have declared war on women. It’s not remotely true, but it is effective.

Now, I don’t actually think Christianity is necessarily inadequate to the task of keeping up with the changes of contemporary society. (The pagan Roman civilization Christianity emerged from was certainly less hospitable to Christianity than America today is. You could look it up.) But Christianity, like other religions, still needs to adapt to changing times and the evolving expectations of the people. I’m nothing like an expert on such things, but it seems to me that most churches and denominations understand this. Some respond more successfully than others. But it’s hardly as if they are oblivious to the challenge of “relevance.”

My concern here is more about mainstream conservatism. I think much of what the Left offers in terms of culture creation is utter crap. But they are at least in the business of culture creation.

The New Manners

And that brings me back to where I started. I began this “news”letter talking about how liberalism hides behind seemingly non-ideological language in order to advance an ideological cause. Think of political correctness in those terms. Progressives are steadily dismantling the beautiful cathedrals of traditional manners and customs, arguing that they’re too Baroque, too antiquated. They use the sledgehammer of liberation rhetoric to destroy the old edifices, but their fidelity to liberty is purely rhetorical. In place of the old cathedrals they build supposedly functional, modern, and utilitarian codes of conduct. But these Brutalist codes are not only unlovely, they are often more prudish than traditional approaches. Like some Six Sigma seminar participants holed up in a Holiday Inn conference room, Harvard is currently gathering its finest minds to draw up the procedures for sexual conduct and consent. The end result will surely be a clipboard check-list to rival that of any Jiffy Lube manager’s in both romantic appeal and sexiness.

What I would like to see from conservatives is recognition that some of the cathedrals are outdated. But instead of arguing that they should be razed and replaced with Jacobin Temples of Reason with rites and rituals grounded in abstraction, why not argue for some long overdue updating and retrofitting? I guarantee you more women prefer a modified version of the traditional process of wooing, courting, and dating before sex than the “modern” schizophrenic system of getting drunk enough for a same-day hook up but not so inebriated to forget to get a signature on the consent form. Traditional notions of romance and respect are far better tools than the mumbo-jumbo campus feminists have to offer. The problem is that the mumbo-jumbo feminists are fighting largely uncontested.

While 1200 showed up for Hillary Clinton others in town were not so convinced

Reader says … 1200 people who are clueless. They spend too much time on social media and watching msnbc.
Hillary Clinton has not accomplished anything in her public life for the public good.
She has only enriched herself and her posse at the expense of the American Taxpayer.
Wake up!
American is in serious decline.
We need a serious person as candidate for the next President.
Not a Social Organizer or Political Operative.

Readers says …Do you know who DOESN’T think she’s so great? Ambassador Stevens, Glen Doherty, Ty Woods and Sean Smith. Also unavailable for comment were Vince Foster, and chairman of the Watergate Commission. The woman is a fraud, a phony and represents everything vile and despicable about the state of politics in this country. Congrats Mr Mayor, you idolize a woman who LIED to the families of 4 dead Americans while standing in front of their caskets.

Rita says …Hillary:

*1% elitist complains about the 1% making too much money
*vilified women who complained about the sexual abuse from Bill (which in time all turned out to be true) – great helper of women’s rights..instead she blamed the victims
*defended a rapist who she believed to be guilty and laughed about it
*moved into NY for the progressive vote to go to Congress – accomplished little to nothing
*settled for secy of state from Obama – accomplished nothing except the death of embassy personnel and covered up and lied to the families over the coffins as they came home
*Watergate – fraudulent brief filed; committee general counsel FIRED her
*Whitewater – land deal went wrong; other people’s accounts used to pay off her and Bill’s debts; Vince Foster suicide??
*Lied that she was being fired upon in Bosnia; video came out and showed she was leisurely walking and never in danger
*said Chelsea was near the WTC when it was bombed; Chelsea later refuted that
*took furniture out of the WH after Bill’s term was up;had to return the furniture
*claims and complains they were dead broke due to legal fees…..(defending BIll’s purjury) so they had a hard time getting HO– USES (plural) but gets multi thousands for speaking engagements

And this behavior is to be valued??? Why do you glorify people who lie and steal from you – don’t enable them! Wake up people, wake up!

Bill says …Um….. she married Bill Clinton? wrote a book about her hard choices like what to do after he cheated on her? She had a baby girl? She couldn’t decide how to spin an al-Qaeda terrorist attack in Benghazi so that it would not hurt Obama’s chances of reelection (oh wait that is not an accomplishment, but she did do it).

Reader says …Hillary Clinton accepted the consolation prize of Secretary of State from Obama.
She then commence a world tour on the taxpayer’s dime.
She traveled over 1 million miles in 4 years with her entourage, security etc. and accomplished NOTHING.
How much did that fiasco cost?
She is useless.

Readers Worries about kids future

Hitler youth on parade
Readers Worries about kids future

This country has undergone a seismic shift in its values in recent years. Our two main parties pretty much followed the same principals of self-reliance and hard work. One was just a little more to the left of the other, but nevertheless, the entrenched sense of American entrepreneurship shone through. Because of the fairly narrow gap in philosophies, common ground was fairly do-able in a divided Government. These last few years have seen a very dangerous move to increase support on the left by enhancing and pushing programs that encourage people to work less and even not at all, through hand-outs and a tax system where almost half the population pays no income tax. Now call me crazy, but even I would vote for the party that absolved me from paying income tax. Add to that, years of sending cryptic signals to people south of the border that we aren’t all that serious in preventing your border crossing, and it’s no wonder we are seeing droves flooding in. We no longer have a diligent media in this country. We have a media business model that caters to segments of society. The majortiy of these segments are to the left, and we therefore have a media that mostly acts as a cheerleader for this President.

I’m not sure if it’s even possible to get the psyche of this country back to where it used to be. I am truly worried about the future of my kids, and if this woman gets elected, I think 4-8 more years of this current way of thinking will be catastrophic.

Tea party groups’ lawsuit against IRS over reported extra scrutiny moves forward

By Amanda Lee Myers, Associated Press10 hours ago

CINCINNATI (AP) — A federal judge has allowed a lawsuit by 10 tea party groups to move forward against the Internal Revenue Service, rejecting a request by the federal government to dismiss all the allegations that the agency subjected conservative groups to additional, often burdensome scrutiny.

In her ruling Thursday, Judge Susan Dlott allowed two of the tea party groups’ claims — including that the IRS discriminated and retaliated against them based on their views in violation of their free speech rights — to survive to trial.

The Cincinnati-based Dlott did dismiss a third claim, ruling the tea party groups could not pursue allegations of privacy violations on behalf of their individual members. The individuals themselves have to do that, she said.

Edward Greim, the lead attorney for the tea party groups, said Friday he is pleased the case will move forward.

Hillary Clinton draws 1,200 to book signing in Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD — Most of those who turned out to meet former Secretary of State and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton at her book signing at Bookends on Thursday afternoon left absolutely starstruck.

Some were petrified, remaining dead silent but smiling as they shook the hand of the woman who is widely expected to be a 2016 presidential candidate.

Others let their nerves get the better of them, and they’d end up blurting out strings of compliments and niceties, producing a wide and gracious smile across Clinton’s face as she continued signing books.

A few of the 1,200 from across North Jersey who turned out for Thursday’s book signing in Ridgewood left in tears, deeply inspired by the woman they’re hoping they get the chance to vote for in little more than two years’ time.

“She was so sweet,” offered Debra DiPrima of Fair Lawn, clutching a copy of Clinton’s new tome “Hard Choices.” “She’s an inspiration because she’s a strong, very poised woman. I told her that we all want her to run for president, and she just smiled at me and laughed.”

DiPrima, like the hundreds of others wearing “I’m Ready for Hillary” stickers, waited three hours to meet Clinton, breathing in the stifling, recycled air of Bookends’ basement.

Millennials: Marriage Doesn’t Matter — Unless It’s My Marriage

Millennials: Marriage Doesn’t Matter — Unless It’s My Marriage

Rachel Sheffield / @RachelSheffiel2

Millennials don’t seem to think getting married and having children is very important to society. According to a recent Pew survey, only 29 percent of 18-24-year-olds and just 35 percent of those 25-34 agree that “society is better off if people make marriage and having children a priority.”

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean today’s young people have completely kicked marriage to the curb. It may just mean that they are less enthused about marriage at this point in their lives, as an Atlantic article points out .

In fact, another poll from 2013 shows that the majority of Millennials are interested in marriage: 75 percent are either married or want to get married. College educated and non-college educated, white and non-white alike say that they hope to marry. Data from high school seniors reported in 2011 tell a similar story. About 80 percent of these young women and 70 percent of the young men say that having a good marriage and family life are extremely important goals for them – percentages that haven’t fluctuated much since the 1970s.

But there’s a difference between wanting to be married eventually, and understanding the importance of marriage to society. Along with the Pew study, data from high school seniors taken between 2007-2010 shows that the majority believe marriage isn’t necessarily any better than living with someone or remaining single. Data from high school seniors collected between 2001 and 2004 reveals that most believe having a child prior to marriage is a worthwhile lifestyle choice or doesn’t affect anyone else.

All this underscores that today’s young adults don’t seem to understand why marriage is generally a better choice for individuals than cohabitation or having a child outside of marriage.

But there are key differences between those who are married and those who are not.

Married adults are healthier, have higher incomes and are more likely to invest. They are also more likely to actively participate in their communities through volunteering.

Children born to married parents also have key advantages. Regardless of the parents’ education level, they are far less likely to be poor. They are more likely to graduate from high school and college, avoid delinquency and drug abuse and avoid becoming single parents.

The unwed childbearing rate, however, is at an all-time high, particularly among the most disadvantaged. Marriage rates are dwindling and divorce rates are high.

Unfortunately, there is little talk of the importance of marriage in our current culture. That needs to change. This message about marriage’s importance needs to be heard — because it helps support the institution that the vast majority of Americans desire for themselves and their children.

The Moral Difference Between Israel and Hamas

The Moral Difference Between Israel and Hamas
Steven Bucci / @SBucci / July 17, 2014

What most Americans—and the world—hear about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas goes something like this: “125 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed by Israel’s relentless assault on Gaza. No Israelis have yet been killed.” This may be true, but there is absolutely no context to it. One must look at the methodologies of the two sides.

Hamas sets up rocket launchers—as well as supply dumps and command-and-control sites—in the midst of apartment buildings, mosques and schools. From these sites, its fighters launch dozens of rockets in salvos, targeting population centers with no discrimination at all. They have been firing almost continuously of late. But normally, they fire when Israeli school children move from their homes, which have safe shelters, to their schools, which also have shelters. They do this deliberately to try and catch the kids in the open. They don’t seek to minimize collateral damage – they seek to maximize it.

Israel, on the other hand, fires only at specific, intelligence-derived military targets. Since these targets are deliberately intermixed with the civilian population by Hamas, Israel must take steps to minimize the collateral casualties.

Before the Israelis strike a building, every home in it gets a call on its landline phone, as do all the cell phones associated with the inhabitants of the building—the cells additionally get text messages—telling them that in a few minutes the building will be targeted. Finally, to make sure everyone gets the message, Israel drops a dud bomb—one containing no explosives—onto the roof of the structure. Minutes later, the building is destroyed. There is no instance in modern military history where a force has taken greater measures to give the innocents as much chance to get out of the way. It is a “discriminant” as a modern military can be.

Additionally, Israel has developed its much-touted—and rightly so—Iron Dome rocket defense system, which renders most of Hamas’ efforts of no effect. Between the Iron Dome shooting down the rockets that might otherwise do damage, and the “Red Alert” app that alerts civilians on their cell phones in real time when a terrorist rocket attack is launched, and where it is headed, the civilian casualties in Israel have been negligible.

Israel just wants to be left alone; Hamas wants the destruction of Israel. There is no moral equivalence there, and the tactics of the two sides prove the point.

Space Camp in Ridgewood inspires young students

Ten-year-old Richard Augustine-Hamilton plans on being an astrophysicist when he grows up.

With his best friend, Connor O’Hara, by his side, the two carefully studied the instructions for a model rocket ship, the culminating project of Ridgewood’s two-week Space Camp.

“This isn’t, like, rocket science or anything. Oh, wait…” Connor joked to Richard.

“Imagine how hard it must be to make an actual rocket,” Richard replied, staring at the rocket parts. “I just can’t imagine.”

Each summer, classroom 141 at Hawes School is transformed into a space station of sorts, with the school’s gym serving as the astronaut’s training center and a neighboring classroom housing a planetarium.

It’s Richard and Connor’s third year at Space Camp, so they build the rockets on their own; meanwhile teachers Tom Harney and Tom Trubac guide the other 9- and 10-year-old earthlings through the process.

“I like getting messy,” said Emma Remis, 10, handling a bottle of Elmer’s glue.

Other girls at the table chimed in with their favorite parts of space camp – including the zip lines set up in the gym and hearing stories of the constellations.

Ridgewood EMTs training to fight rise in overdose deaths

Officials in New Jersey have reported a significant recent rise in deaths caused by overdoses on prescription painkillers and heroin.

Thanks to new state legislation, members of Ridgewood Emergency Services (EMS) are now better prepared to deal with any opiod overdoses they may encounter.

On Tuesday night, Dr. Marc Dreier, The Valley Hospital’s medical director of Emergency Services, trained Ridgewood EMS members in the new state-sanctioned administration of the drug naloxone, a temporary antidote for opioid overdoses.

“This is definitely a positive development,” Dreier said, “but prevention is the solution.”

According to EMS Chief Brian Pullman, Ridgewood deals with few overdoses on opioids, more commonly dealing with overdoses on other drugs. In his other position as a Ridgewood police sergeant, Pullman has encountered at least one heroin overdose that was “beyond the point of help.”

“We haven’t seen it as an ‘epidemic’ in Ridgewood, but we have seen cases,” he said.

Pullman and about 40 other emergency responders attended the one-hour training, which Dreier gave at 8 p.m. at the Douglas Place headquarters of Ridgewood EMS. Responders from other municipalities, including Mahwah and Waldwick, joined Ridgewood EMS members.

RIDGEWOOD — A member of the Planning Board spoke out this week against a proposed master plan amendment that would permit multifamily, high-density housing complexes downtown — calling for a moratorium on development in the village.

But she received mixed reviews from other board members, who were divided about the process or feared the village would face litigation.

“I don’t believe what is happening here is really in the best interest of the village as a whole,” said Michele Peters, after nearly three hours of testimony Tuesday night on three proposed developments.

Those developments — the Enclave, a 52-unit project on East Ridgewood Avenue; The Dayton, a 106-unit apartment building for South Broad Street; and the 52-unit Chestnut Village on Chestnut Street — are currently prohibited under the village code. And the amendment has been under consideration for nearly two years.

Peters urged the others members to “take time to stop, so we can talk about this.”

She added that she thinks the board is “dealing with a fire as it comes to us” and questioned the entire process that members are embroiled in.

Peters was also critical of the ordinance that enabled the developers’ requests for a master plan amendment, saying the village was “putting the cart before the horse.”

Urging more of an exchange with the public throughout the hearing process, Peters said, “These are major issues having to do with the way our community is planned and it should be freely discussed.”

Ridgewood Water would not be impacted by the proposal to amend the village’s master plan to allow high-density housing, but the village’s need for open space would be exacerbated, experts told the Planning Board at a meeting July 15.

Three developers are petitioning the Planning Board to amend the master plan to allow multifamily housing in zones where the use is not currently permitted. A master plan amendment would be the first step in larger processes for the developers, who would then need to seek further approval for their sites.

David Scheibner, Ridgewood Water’s business director, said the developments, proposed for the Central Business District (CBD) would not strain the village’s water supply.

His conclusion assumed that the apartments would have “conversation-oriented appliances” and that the individual residents would not use a significant amount of water for lawns or other irrigation. A single meter would be installed for each of the developments, which Ridgewood Water would maintain.

As for impact, The Enclave (52 units, 106 residents, plus the possibility of commercial use) would collectively consume 5,300 gallons per day; Chestnut Village (52 units, 91 residents) would collectively consume 4,500 gallons per day; and The Dayton (106 units, 208 residents) would collectively consume 10,400 gallons per day.

Fire suppression flows would not be an issue for Chestnut Village, Scheibner said, but there would need to be a flow test conducted by Ridgewood Water for both The Dayton and Enclave due to the size of the existing water mains and limited reinforcing supply from the west due to the railroad tracks.

Following three hours of testimony and questioning on proposed multifamily housing on Tuesday night, Ridgewood Planning Board member Michele Peters said she felt rushed by developers for an answer on whether the village’s master plan should be amended.

Three developers are seeking the amendment as the first step in a process to gain approval to build multifamily housing in the village’s Central Business District.

“How are we going to stop this train?” Peters said. “When are we going to take the time to really talk about the master plan?”

Applications to amend the village’s master plan amendment from the housing developers, and one from Valley Hospital which was recently rejected, have forced the board to hear proponents of change for several years.

In response to vocal opposition from resident group Citizens for a Better Ridgewood (CBR) and lawn signs that read “Save Our Village,” Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli has scheduled an informal public meeting for an open discussion on the future of the CBD. The forum will begin at 7:30 p.m. on July 23 in the Village Hall courtroom.

The issue stems from an ordinance adopted in 2007 that allows individuals or groups to propose master plan amendments. Councilwoman Susan Knudsen, who was sworn in earlier this month, has called for the village to repeal the ordinance.

“Can we have a moratorium on applications? Can we not take some time to stop so we can talk about this … instead of dealing with a fire as it comes to us?” Peters asked.
