Readers not sold on Village “Road fix” plan for Garber Square

RIDGEWOOD_TRAFFIC_ALERT_theridgewoodblog.net_-300x225

Readers not sold on Village “Road fix” plan for Garber Square

If they are going to waste $45,000 ripping out the just-poured curbing for the median, not installing the $5,000 worth of trees and $20,000 sprinkler system, and start over, why make it 4 feet wide?

We have always needed MORE width, not less. Before, it was 3.5 feet. Forget about “traffic calming”–we need 2 lanes, period, and making them too narrow is NOT the answer to anything.

Village Manager was concerned about cars jumping the median and hitting a bicyclist–have never seen that in 40 years. The difference between 3 feet and 8 feet to a moving, out-of-control car is zero.

Why not just make the median NARROWER and HIGHER, preferably with some material that allows light through, such as stone or brick?

Better, how about ONE foot wide and a foot or more high? Really think about it–actually DESIGN it. A lot of people are going to be looking at it and driving around it for a long time.

More space between bikes and cars would only be a good thing. And when they repaint it for two lanes in each direction, they’d have accommodated the trucks, ambulances, fire trucks, and supersize vans that zip through there constantly and might otherwise clip the cars and bicyclists.

Bike lanes are great on a straightaway but on a 90-degree curve with walls on both sides and in the middle, NO.

Are they going to rush to make the changes on Wednesday or have the public meeting urged by the League of Women Voters to enable more people to comment?

The “improved” width of 4 feet is too wide.

You Won’t Believe Who America’s Greatest Enemy Is

You Won’t Believe Who America’s Greatest Enemy Is

James Carafano / @JJCarafano / June 07, 2014 /

President Obama’s West Point speech proved telling in ways he probably didn’t plan. The commander-in-chief tried to use the commencement address to quell concerns over a foreign policy that has produced nothing but controversy and setbacks since the debacle in Benghazi.

But the president scored more misses than hits with the audience, pundits and the press. Even The Washington Post acknowledged that the speech did little more than mow down a field of “straw men.”

As far as policy goes, the speech may have been a clarion call for little more than muddling through. But for prospectors of presidential rhetoric, it is a gold mine. And the biggest nugget is the paradox of an administration mimicking the caricature of the foreign policy it created to discredit the previous administration.

Every administration must define the enemy from which they are protecting us. During the Cold War, that was easy. But since the fall of the Berlin Wall, it’s often been less self-evident.

That can be problematic. Strategy, after all, is a competitive practice: the art of besting somebody—the Trojans, the Red Coats, the Nazis, whoever’s on the other end of the spear, the sword or the gun. “It is about getting more out of a situation than the starting balance of power would suggest,” Lawrence Freedman declares in his new book, Strategy: A History. “It is the art of creating power.”

And then, slapping the other side over the head with it.

During the Cold War, the enemy was in Moscow. The big challenge was to make neither too much, nor too little of the threat. George Kennan always argued for a tempered, measured threat assessment. On the other hand, the drafters of NSC 68, led by Paul Nitze, and Senator Arthur Vandenberg wanted to “scare the hell out of the American people.”

Getting the threat right was critical. It was the main selling point to the public about how much was enough to defend us.

But America’s long-time selling point for strategy crumbled with the Wall. No self-evident replacement arose until 9/11. From the rubble of the World Trade Center, a strategy for fighting a “global war on terrorism” (GWOT)—the “Long War”—emerged.

Then came Obama. He not only shortened the long war and banned GWOT from the rhetorical locker room, he actively participated in a campaign to delegitimize the whole endeavor. That crusade continued into the West Point speech. “[A] strategy that involves invading every country that harbors terrorist networks is naive and unsustainable,” the president told the Corps of Cadets and their assembled loved ones.

Of course, the Bush administration had made exactly the same point again and again, post 9/11. Bush, for example, passed on taking on a number of transnational terrorist groups including Hamas, Hezbollah, all sorts of Pakistani groups with lots of initials and most of the nascent groups in North Africa.

Bush invaded exactly two places—Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama invaded one—Libya, and he tried to bomb his way into another war—Syria. So, at least numerically speaking, the score on invasions is pretty even. Obama’s critique of GWOT is an embarrassment of oversimplification.

But while treating the terrorist threat dismissively, Mr. Obama went on to identify an alternative “enemy” on which to pin a grand strategy. Unfortunately, his chosen enemy is just as far removed from a pressing threat to national security as his caricature of the Bush Doctrine was divorced from the real Bush Doctrine.

The “enemy” chosen by Obama to animate America’s grand strategy is climate change. The nation’s existential goal, therefor, is “to energize the global effort to combat climate change, a creeping national security crisis that will help shape your time in uniform,” the commander-in-chief told his new troops at West Point. Apparently, the new second lieutenants will spend their careers fighting the weather.

Weather may seem an odd foe for the military. But for a progressive president, it’s the perfect choice.

Obama can’t be accused as a warmonger because he doesn’t want the military to fight anyone—he wants the military to help people.

Weather isn’t a person or a country. He risks offending almost no one.

Making climate change a national security matter also helps a president to press for other statist agenda items—from pet green energy projects to adopting the right-to-protect doctrine.

Unfortunately, as an organizing principle for national security, climate makes a terrible “enemy.” It is enormously complex and unpredictable. The unpredictability of how climate change will play out on the global stage ought to dissuade any strategist from regarding it as an organizing principle around which one can practice what Freedman calls “the art of creating power.” Basing strategy on climate would be the ultimate march of folly.

Mr. Obama may well know that. The reference to climate may be just like the rest of the address: knowingly empty rhetoric. But it does lead to a conclusion devoid of complexity and unpredictability—this speech and the vapid ideas in it will soon be forgotten.

NJ Transit, lawmakers hear about PA terminal

NJ Transit, lawmakers hear about PA terminal

What is truly astonishing is the total lack of knowledge of the plight of N/NJ commuters by politicians and the total ignorance of the near “shit hole conditions” of the Port Authority bus terminal over the last 40 years . These same people namely State Sen. Loretta Weinberg who were also stumped by traffic jams on the GWB.

Over the years, they have vented to family, co-workers and seat-mates about the arduous evening commute out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan that seemed to be getting worse. And on social media, they discovered there were others just like them – fellow NJ Transit commuters on the verge of revolt over hourlong waits with seemingly little explanation from on-site representatives at the terminal.

Now those bus commuters have gotten the attention of NJ Transit officials – and state legislators. State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck, and Assemblyman Gordon Johnson will hold a public hearing on Port Authority Bus Terminal conditions on June 11 at the Richard Rodda Community Center, 250 Colonial Court, Teaneck.

The hearing is from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“We wanted to make sure in a most public way that NJ Transit and the Port Authority are well aware of the problems,” Weinberg said. “We’ve been hearing from our constituents.” She said they want to put pressure on the agency to alleviate the poor conditions at the terminal, where customers can be forced to stand for more than an hour at a gate awaiting their buses.

Customers have no place to sit and say there is no one providing updates or explanations as to why their buses are late or when they will arrive.

“It is a disaster,” Weinberg said. “Can you imagine having to commute to New York and you get finished with a day’s work and you have to go through that?”

Ridgewood seniors enjoy one last solid baseball season

The Ridgewood High School boys baseball team fell short of the championship aspirations it had set before this season, but the squad didn’t finish the year without adding a few more signature victories for a senior class that has experienced its share of them.

The Maroons’ 16 seniors can cherish the program’s first victory over Don Bosco in a decade and a deep run into the North 1, Group 4 state tournament.

“We did have some great wins, and we had some tough losses,” RHS head coach Kurt Hommen said Monday. “We had a very experienced team, a team that’s played together for a quite a while.”

Ridgewood finished 16-10, overcoming a rough early stretch in which it lost 4-of-5 by a combined score of 35-16 to drop its record to 4-4.

Ridgewood Crew wraps up season at Nationals

JUNE 6, 2014    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2014, 12:31 AM

Ridgewood Crew wrapped up another winning season with one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championships, held at Mercer Lake in West Windsor over Memorial Day weekend.

The Ridgewood Crew women’s varsity 4X boat captured silver medals at the SRAA National Championships and Stotesbury Cup Regatta. From left: juniors Bridget Callaghan and Julia Hefferon and seniors Emma Brickfield and Amanda Criscitiello.

Remarkably, this final regatta for Ridgewood High School seniors Maeve Cannon and Sophie Noel capped a two-year win streak in the women’s lightweight double for this dynamic duo — a feat virtually unheard of in the rowing community.

Illness and poor weather conditions prevented senior Joseph Criscitiello, who rows the men’s 1X scull, from participating in the last three regattas. His sister Amanda, a triplet, rows in the women’s varsity 4X boat and captured silver at Nationals and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, as well as a bronze at the Philadelphia City championships (a.k.a. “Cities”).

Ridgewood Girls Lacrosse stars cap careers with state tournament run

Any notion that the Ridgewood High School girls lacrosse team did not meet expectations this season shows just how high a pedestal upon which the program stands.

Freshman Hannah Cermack, left, is congratulated by senior Anna Jorgensen after scoring the game-tying goal late in the North Group 4 state final against Ridge on May 28. The Maroons overcame a four-goal deficit but fell just short of their sixth straight sectional title, as the Red Devils prevailed, 11-10.

Although the Maroons lost in the North Group 4 state title game to Ridge, 11-10 — ending a streak of five straight sectional championships — the team finished the year with a 16-5 record against the toughest competition the state had to offer and also claimed another Bergen County tournament title.

“They should be very proud of what they accomplished throughout the season,” RHS head coach Karla Mixon said Tuesday. “I know it was a heartbreaker. We expected to go a little bit further, but it just wasn’t our day.”

After trailing at the half of the May 28 sectional final, 8-4, Ridgewood nearly pulled off an improbable comeback, tying Ridge at 10 on a goal by freshman Hannah Cermack with just over two minutes left. But the Red Devils responded with a goal 22 seconds later to hold off the surging Maroons.

Who are the Knights of Columbus?

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest men’s Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded by the Venerable Father Michael McGivney in New Haven, CT, in 1882, it was named in honor of the navigator/explorer Christopher Columbus. There are more than 1.8 million members in 15,000 councils, with nearly 200 councils on college campuses. The Order is still true to its founding principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.

Last year alone, in addition to raising and donating more than $158 million to charitable needs and projects, Knights volunteered more than 70 million hours of their time to charitable causes. Time and resources are donated to those in need and without regard to religious affiliation.  We undertake these acts of charity because we see those in need in our community.  Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. From international charitable partnerships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity to our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other purely local charities, the opportunity to work together with fellow Knights and their families is virtually endless.  The Knights’ annual Survey of Fraternal Activity for the year ending Dec. 31, 2011, indicated that, despite a soft economy, total charitable contributions reached $154,651,852 – exceeding the previous year’s total by more than $3.4 million.  Sixty percent of the contributions were for projects at the community level, many involving youth activities. Not included in this figure is the quantity of volunteer service hours to charitable causes by Knights grew to 70,053,149 – an increase of 797,507 hours compared to 2009. There were more than 418,841 Knights of Columbus blood donations during the year.

Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated $1.406 billion to charity, and provided more than 653 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable initiatives.

The Ridgewood Council #1736 is one of the oldest in the State of New Jersey, and even the United States, celebrating its 100th Anniversary in June 2014.  It boasts an active membership of over 300+ members.  Just in the last ten years, Council #1736 has donated over $ 250,000 to local charities, the needy, and to those marginalized by society.

In addition, our council members have contributed over one hundred thousand man hours to better our community and all of its members. Some of the charities include:
Adler Aphasia Center. Alfa Development, Inc., American Cancer Society, Archdiocese of Newark, Ministry for Persons w/Disabilities, Camp Sunshine, Dad’s Night, EBV Foundation, Eva’s Kitchen, Friends to Friends, Good Counsel Homes, HonorVet.org, John Wayne Cancer Center, Knowledge is the Cure, Lots of Love 4 Lindsay, Mary Therese Rose Fund, Inc., New Hope 4 Life, New Jersey Disaster Relief Program, Our Lady of Victories Soup Kitchen, Paramus Veteran’s Home, Parents of Autistic Children of Ocean County, Inc, Phoenix Center, Project Youth Haven, Putting the Pieces Together, Ridgewood Social Services/Food Bank, Ridgewood P.B.A. Charity for Haley, Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47, Run for Hope Foundation, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, St. Mary’s RC Church, Ken’s Kitchen, Senior Citizens Christmas Party, Special Olympics, The Opportunity Center, Wounded Warrior Project.

Readers debate the future of Ken Smith

Readers debate the future of Ken Smith

Reader says Failure to turn the Ken Smith lot into a parking garage with some kind of overpass walkway to get to and from it would be to miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fix much of the parking problem, at least for commuters, for once and for all. VILLAGE COUNCIL–HELLO–THIS IS IMPORTANT. Take out a bond and pay it back with parking revenue.

Other readers disagree and say It will never become a government operated parking garage. They don’t want to lose the property tax revenue.

Others sarcastically argue to Add a few more buildings to vacant lots and soon no traffic at all! The perfect solution to our parking and traffic problems. Why didn’t we think of this earlier?

And finally one reader observers Although only 3 applicants are currently before the board, the Ken Smith site’s property still will fall within the new high density zone. Apparently that property owner is buying up more land surrounding what they currently own. Probably a smart tactic to sit on the sidelines while others duke it out. Either way any zoning benefit will be realized on this site as well.

Construction to begin on Ridgewood High School Learning Commons

A new, state-of-the-art media center will greet Ridgewood High School students next fall.

After a year-long wait, construction will begin on renovations to the school’s library on Tuesday, June 10.

The library will be closed to students until the end of the year, and the literary collection and computers will be packed up before demolition, according to the organizers on the project’s parent committee — RHS Home and School Association President Carol Olson, Jaime Frederick, Tina Telesco, Lori Weil and David Zrike.

“Every effort is being made to minimize disruptions to the students and the majority of the library dislocation and construction will take place during the summer,” the organizers said in a recent letter thanking residents and district officials for their support.

The design will “honor the feedback received from students, faculty and parents,” the group added. The final project, they said, will include both individual and group study spaces, including four conference rooms; areas to accommodate different activities; improved lighting and aesthetics; more and better technology; more seating and a variety of comfortable furniture; computer and printing stations; and enhanced research service.

The history of this project traces back to the spring of 2012, when a parent-driven fundraising campaign commenced to turn the old student library, last renovated in the 1960s, into what is called a “learning commons” — a study and work space that goes beyond the traditional definition of a “library.”

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — The Village Council agreed revisions need to be made to a street-improvement project that some residents and business owners have been critical of in recent weeks.

Although it may cost Ridgewood an extra $45,000 in capital funding, the governing body on Wednesday night accepted project modifications recommended by Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld.

The council will vote on the changes Wednesday.

The $500,000 project was the subject of a recent meeting between Ridgewood officials and residents of the neighborhood where the work is taking place.

Residents have opposed the project, saying it will create traffic snarls and endanger bicyclists.

Under the original plan, bike lanes as well as an 8-foot-wide, tree-lined median would be installed, swallowing up two traffic lanes where four currently exist.

Village officials maintained the work, as first planned, would improve safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians around Garber Square, as well as along Franklin Avenue and Broad Street. The project is expected to be completed in July.
