Ridgewood NJ, Two Ridgewood High School students, Nicholas Cho (Grade 11) and Joshua Fishkin (Grade 10) were accepted into The William P. Lauder Junior Internship Program, a highly competitive program offered by the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education. Only forty students, in grades 7-11, are selected from a nationwide pool to participate in a “dynamic and unique learning opportunity to engage with testimonies – personal stories – from survivors and witnesses of genocide.” To be considered, both RHS applicants submitted a personal letter of interest and a reference letter from an educator familiar with the student’s educational background.

Ridgewood NJ, designing spaces that inspire creativity and innovation and equip students with real-world experience are at the heart of the Duffield STEAM Initiative. The Innovation and Makerspace Lab is being transformed into a high-tech, 21st century workspace where students now have access to tools commonly found in commercial manufacturing facilities and design houses. Over the past month, three substantial pieces of industry-standard equipment have been installed – the Mimaki UCJV300-130 Series large format vinyl printer/cutter, the Techno HD-II 20×34 CNC router, and the Stratasys F170 3D printer. Within days of teacher training, students were off and running, learning and experimenting with new equipment.

Ridgewood NJ, In cooperation with the Ridgewood High School Social Studies department, Ridgewood Historical Society proudly presents:
“LETTERS FROM HISTORY” Contest!

Open to all RHS students. We challenge students to write a letter inspired by local history and the current exhibit at the Schoolhouse Museum.
• Write a 1-page letter about a war or revolution from the exhibit and an artifact on display. The letter must be from the perspective of a fictional person involved in some aspect of the historic time to a relative back in Ridgewood.
Examples: a soldier in World War I writing to parents; a Civil Rights worker writing to a sibling; a soldier in Vietnam writing to a friend. It should involve emotions people would have experienced—loneliness, fear, excitement, etc.—in the context of the specific time.

RHS Students, faculty rally behind Ridgewood teen

Julia Leonard

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

RIDGEWOOD – Members of Ridgewood High School’s (RHS) Project Interact (PI) group showed a video on Feb. 9 of former student Julia Leonard requesting to meet talk-show host Ellen Degeneres and hoping to get a new wheelchair.

A graduate of RHS, Class of 2015, Leonard has gone through a lot in her relatively short life, surviving a rare form of spinal cancer and adapting to an ordinary life as best she can.

Despite the trials and tribulations that come with dealing with such health complications, Leonard retained her sense of happiness by watching her favorite television shows, including “The Ellen Degeneres Show.”

It was by watching the television program that Leonard regained her desire to dance, thanks to seeing Ellen Degeneres cavorting around her set during her shows.

“Cancer almost took away my love for dancing, until I saw your show,” Leonard said in the video. “You inspired me to dance every day when you shake down the stage. I love to dance in my wheelchair.”

Leonard initially made her own video for Degeneres, but decided to accept the help of PI when it offered.

Nancy Reilly, a science teacher and one of the staff involved with PI, explained that while she was impressed with Leonard’s original video, she thought the student group could help make an even better one.

‎Ridgewood High School Alumni Association Envisions creating, sponsoring and providing volunteers for programs for RHS students

Ridgewood NJ, This is exactly the sort of program I envision the RHS Alumni Association creating, sponsoring and providing volunteers for. Until today I had never heard about this program for students interested in health care professions. It is in its 10th year. Please read:

“Dr. Earl Wheaton, RHS ’46, returned to school to talk with Caroline Richards’ (RHS ’91) current 10th grade RAHP students about medical ethics. Dr. Wheaton, who helped initiate a medical ethics department at Valley Hospital spoke about the need for such a department and how doctors and staff use four basic principles to negotiate tough ethical decisions regarding patient care. Here he explains the possible scenarios one might consider as he or she fills out an advance directive. The issue of medical ethics connects to the 10th grade curriculum through four texts – Flowers for Algernon, Frankenstein, Better and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – as students try to answer the overarching questions, “Just because we can do something, should we?” and, “What responsibilities do we have to those to whom we commit ourselves?”

RAHP (Ridgewood Academy of Health Professionals) is a three year, interdisciplinary program for students who think they might be interested in the health care professions. Students enjoy group explorations to Valley Hospital and 1:1 mentorships with its professionals, as well as integrated English, science and health classes. The program is celebrating its tenth year.”

RHS Backwoods

Screen shot 2011 12 13 at 6.50.16 PM

RHS Backwoods

RHS Backwoods looks to answer the age old question ,where does a high school teen go on Friday and Saturday nights? To old to be a kid but too young to be an adult , creating a safe yet fun environment for teens .

The Ridgewood High School Home and School Association, the Administration and the Ridgewood Guild are collaborating to provide an opportunity for our high school students to have a place to go on Friday and Saturday nights after a game or activity.

We want to bring our students “Back to Ridgewood” (BACK WOODS) after 9:30pm instead of spending time in someone’s basement engaging in unsafe activities. Our goal is to have downtown Ridgewood restaurants staying open until 11:00pm or later each Friday and Saturday during the school year. When other communities have turned out their lights for the night, we want our students to enjoy coming “Back to Ridgewood” for a meal, a snack, a cup of coffee, ice cream or finding a new good book to read.

Our goal is to have restaurants develop a cost effective menu for students to enjoy. At BACK WOODS, we plan to have fabulous entertainment at restaurants and businesses for you to enjoy.

This is a collaborative effort aimed at providing healthy venues for our students on Friday and Saturday nights.

We plan to launch our BACK WOODS program on May 20, 2011 with a Band Slam at Van Nest Park. After the Slam, we hope to have some restaurants participate in a pilot for the program.
