staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ok is it just us but four American journalists dead Inside the US within the past 24 hours? First Ned Colt of NBC dropped dead of a stroke yesterday.(. he was “supposedly” kidnapped during the Iraq war for several days, then freed?)
Bob Simon of CBS died in a car crash yesterday.. (he also was “supposedly” kidnapped held captive for 40 days in an Iraq jail. David Carr of NY Times just died suddenly interestingly enough after interviewing Edward Snowden, and had just come out against Brian Williams from NBC while on CBS ,calling Williams out for lying about being shot down in the Iraq war and then there was Bob Hager the NBC aviation expert now has a head on crash. This us not to mention the Brian Williams  debacle and who is now off the air for lying about the Iraq war.

Correction :Bob Hager is fine (https://www.adweek.com/tvnewser/former-nbc-newser-bob-hager-unhurt-after-head-on-crash/255845 ) Longtime NBC News correspondent Bob Hager was involved in a head-on collision near his home in Vermont Thursday. Hager was uninjured; his wife, Honore, was hospitalized with back and neck injuries. Our sincerest apologizes .

How much does your state spend on welfare? New Jersey spends 22 percent

By Jason Russell | February 12, 2015 | 12:29 pm

Wyoming spends the smallest portion of its budget on welfare programs, according to fiscal year 2013 data released by the Census Bureau. About 13 percent of Wyoming’s budget goes to welfare, with education getting 30 percent of the budget, and the rest going to other various government functions.

On the other hand, Tennessee spends the highest portion of its budget on welfare, at 36 percent. Tennessee spends slightly less on education with 32 percent of its budget dedicated to schools, and the rest going to other functions, especially highways.

Nationwide, state governments collectively spend $2 trillion, with $520 billion of that going toward welfare programs, or just under 26 percent. Education is the highest category of state government spending, with 30 percent of state government spending nationwide.

Need A Date for Valentines : The Robot That Knows When to Swipe Right

A new Tinder bot learns who its human overlord finds attractive. Then it goes to work.
Robinson Meyer Feb 13 2015, 7:45 AM ET

I have come to think of Tinder as a sort algorithm for the mind. It surfaces individual data entries—which happen to be humans—and asks the user to make a single decision about them: Would you make out with this person? Or, more tamely, would you be friends with this person?

If both minds sort each other’s data entries into the same category, a chat window opens.

The process is efficient, and the computer does everything except make that one, crucial choice. But perhaps that is too much work. Perhaps that single choice can be automated.

The Vancouver-based programmer Justin Long has done just that. In a post on his personal website, he describes how he automated Tinder using facial-recognition algorithms and a chat bot.

The bot, he writes, is “amazingly effective”—so effective he eventually turned it off.

Long’s bot, which he calls Tinderbox, has two steps: a sort phase and a chat phase. First, Tinderbox asks users to sort 60 faces from Tinder into the “yes” or “no” piles. Using the facial-recognition scheme Eigenface, it notes what kind of features users seem to like—attempting, in other words, to distinguish a user’s “type.” Then it goes to work, automatically sorting images from other Tinder users along the parameters it judges important.

Green Scheme Brings Down Democrat Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber

Green Scheme Brings Down Democrat Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber

Governor John Kitzhaber announces his resignation

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber resigned effective Wednesday, Feb. 18, in a letter submitted to Secretary of State Kate Brown.

“I am announcing today that I will resign as Governor of the State of Oregon,” he wrote in a statement released just after noon Friday.

Brown, also a Democrat, will be sworn in as Oregon’s 37th governor, but the timing of that ceremony is uncertain.

In just four months, a public corruption scandal involving Kitzhaber and his fiancee, Cylvia Hayes, has hobbled one of Oregon’s most durable politicians. Kitzhaber, a public official for 37 years, was sworn in for a historic fourth term as governor just a month ago. Facing not only a state criminal investigation and an ethics review, Kitzhaber watched his support from fellow veteran lawmakers crumble this week.

The governor’s resignation does not end either the criminal investigation or ethics review.

Kitzhaber, 67, did not appear in public on Friday and neither did his fiancee, Cylvia Hayes. Instead, he issued a page-long statement that was released Friday that made clear his pain and frustration with having to abandon what was to be a historic fourth term. Yet, he wrote, he understood why the move was necessary.

Criticism had mounted in recent weeks over how Kitzhaber had handed Hayes’ roles as an unpaid clean energy and economic policy adviser in his office, and as a consultant paid to promote the same topics. Since Kitzhaber took office in 2011, Hayes had collected at least $213,000 from contracts, records showed.

Questions remain as to whether Hayes reported some of that income on her federal taxes.

Paul: ‘I blame’ Clinton for ISIS conflict

Paul: ‘I blame’ Clinton for ISIS conflict

By Ben Kamisar

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Wednesday accused former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of helping to spur unrest in the Middle East that led to the current battle against militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

“One of the people I blame for a lot of this, frankly, is Hillary Clinton,” he said on Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom.”

“The disaster that is Libya is now a breeding ground for terrorists and also a breeding ground for armament. I really do blame Hillary Clinton’s war in Libya for creating a lot of the chaos that is now spreading throughout the Middle East.”Paul has repeatedly needled Clinton ahead of the two politicians’ potential 2016 bids, this time when host Bill Hemmer asked for his take on President Obama’s proposed authorization to fight ISIS, sent to Congress Wednesday. The proposal includes vague language that limits the president from “enduring offensive ground combat” but would allow him to authorize limited ground operations and have soldiers target ISIS forces and their associates.

But the plan hasn’t been welcomed with open arms on Capitol Hill. Some Democratic lawmakers told The Hill that the language may still be too broad, while Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said in a statement that he’s concerned the president’s language isn’t broad enough to give “our military commanders the flexibility and authorities they need.”

PSE&G residential electric bills to increase 2.1 percent on June 1

PSE&G residential electric bills to increase 2.1 percent on June 1
Feb. 13, 2015

Utility corrects previous 5.1 percent calculation errorNewark, NJ ,Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G) today said the impact of the recent Basic Generation Service electricity supply auction on residential electric bills will be a 2.1 percent increase on June 1, when new electric rates take effect. The utility had previously said the impact would be an increase of 5.1 percent.

“The bill impact information we provided to the NJ Board of Public Utilities at the conclusion of the auction was inaccurate,” said Jorge Cardenas, vice president of asset management and centralized services. “While the wholesale prices for electricity secured in the auction are correct, we made a calculation error in how the new prices would affect customer bills on June 1. We are pleased to report that the typical residential bill will increase by 2.1 percent and not the 5.1 percent we had indicated. It was our calculation error and we sincerely regret both the error and any confusion that may have resulted.”

The bill for a PSE&G residential customer who uses the statewide average of 650 kilowatthours per month will pay $123.82 a month, or $2.58 more per month when averaged over the entire year.

“We commend the Board of Public Utilities for once again approving this efficient and competitive way to secure electricity on behalf of our customers,” Cardenas said. “Our continued investment in transmission infrastructure, along with our commitment to renewable energy sources, contributed to the modest increase to typical residential bills.”

Cardenas said the transmission investments are mandated by regional grid operator PJM to ensure grid stability in PSE&G’s densely populated service territory, enabling the utility to ensure the delivery of safe, reliable electricity. “Our customers are benefitting from a more modern electric system that will provide strong reliability for many years to come,” he added.

Although electric bills are rising slightly, most PSE&G customers also receive gas service and are benefitting from lower gas bills this winter. PSE&G lowered the price of residential gas supply on October 1, 2014 to 45 cents per therm — its lowest rate in 14 years. In addition, the utility is providing significant bill credits to residential gas customers for usage from November 2014 to March 2015 – saving the typical residential gas customer more than $200 during the five-month period.

Since January of 2009, reductions in the cost of gas supply have lowered bills 44 percent, for an annual savings of $741 for PSE&G’s current typical residential gas heating customer. Since 2012, PSE&G has issued bill credits that reduced customers’ supply portion of their bills by a total of approximately $400.

“ghosts of the 1930s”

Manoj Pradhan, Morgan Stanley’s global economist, said the world is revisiting the “ghosts of the 1930s” as one country after another tries to steal a march on others by getting in devaluation first. “The lesson from the 1930s is that those who do so early benefit at the expense of those who wait too long,” he said.

Sweden cuts rates below zero as global currency wars spread
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Morgan Stanley warns that the world is revisiting the “ghosts of the 1930s” as one country after another tries to steal a march on others by devaluing first

Sweden has cut interest rates below zero and launched quantitative easing to fight deflation, becoming the latest Scandinavian state to join Europe’s escalating currency wars.

The Riksbank caught markets by surprise, reducing the benchmark lending rate to minus 0.10pc and unveiled its first asset purchases, vowing to take further action at any time to stop the country falling into a deflationary trap. The bank presented the move as precautionary step due to rising risks of a “poorer outcome abroad” and the crisis in Greece.

Janet Henry from HSBC said the measures are clearly a “beggar-thy neighbour” manoeuvre to weaken the krone, the latest such action in a global currency war that does little to tackle the deeper problem of deficient world demand.

The move comes as neighbouring Denmark takes ever more drastic steps to stop a flood of money overwhelming its exchange rate peg to the euro and tightening the deflationary noose.

Obama Heads to Tech Security Talks Amid Tensions

By DAVID E. SANGER and NICOLE PERLROTHFEB. 12, 2015

PALO ALTO, Calif. — President Obama will meet here on Friday with the nation’s top technologists on a host of cybersecurity issues and the threats posed by increasingly sophisticated hackers. But nowhere on the agenda is the real issue for the chief executives and tech company officials who will gather on the Stanford campus: the deepening estrangement between Silicon Valley and the government.

The long history of quiet cooperation between Washington and America’s top technology companies — first to win the Cold War, then to combat terrorism — was founded on the assumption of mutual interest. Edward J. Snowden’s revelations shattered that. Now, the Obama administration’s efforts to prevent companies from greatly strengthening encryption in commercial products like Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android phones has set off a new battle, as the companies resist government efforts to make sure police and intelligence agencies can crack the systems.

Before His Election, WashPost Never Probed Candidate Obama’s College Years Like Scott Walker’s

By Tim Graham | February 12, 2015 | 5:02 PM EST

The Washington Post published a 2,223-word story on Thursday’s front page on the college career of Scott Walker — it ended abruptly without a graduation. One obvious question: when did the Post publish a long story on candidate Barack Obama’s undergraduate college years before he was elected in 2008? The answer: They didn’t.

Obama attended Occidental College in California for two years and earned his degree in the Ivy League at Columbia University in New York City. But that apparently wasn’t considered newsworthy.

A Nexis search of Obama and “Occidental” found one mention in a Sunday Outlook piece in 2007 and one mention in 2008. On February 11, 2007, it came up in a Sunday Outlook section piece titled “A Rusty Toyota, a Mean Jump Shot, Good Ears.” Occidental’s basketball coach Mike Zinn was quoted as saying “Barry was the same in victory or defeat — even-tempered. You could sense that the sport and competition were important, but once the season was over, it was time to focus again on academic issues.”

In 2008, it was a gushy story by Post reporter Kevin Merida on August 25, the first day of the Democratic convention. The headline was “A Place in Between; In a Nation Where Race Has Long Carried Polarizing Implications, the Mixed Parentage Of Barack Obama Opens a Bridge to Changes in Our Language — and Thinking.”

But Merida – now the paper’s managing editor – didn’t do any reporting on Obama’s college years.  He merely quoted from Obama’s memoir.

In “Dreams From My Father,” Obama poses the question that would hover over his post-adolescent life: “Where did I belong?” He was two years from graduation at Columbia University and felt “like a drunk coming out of a long, painful binge,” he writes, with no idea what he was going to do with his future or even where he would live. He had put Hawaii in the rear-view mirror and could no longer imagine settling there. Africa? It was too late to claim his father’s native land as his own.

“And if I had come to understand myself as a black American, and was understood as such, that understanding remained unanchored to place,” Obama writes. “What I needed was a community, I realized, a community that cut deeper than the common despair that black friends and I shared when reading the latest crime statistics, or the high fives I might exchange on the a basketball court. A place where I could put down stakes and test my commitments.”

In searching for a place to anchor, Obama transferred from Occidental College in Los Angeles to Columbia in New York, a period of his life that has not been well-examined. “I figured that if there weren’t any more black students at Columbia than there were at Oxy, I’d at least be in the heart of a true city, with black neighborhoods in close proximity.”

Obama writes that he was more like black students who had grown up in the suburbs, “kids whose parents had already paid the price of escape.” Except he had not grown up in Compton or Watts, he points out, and had nothing to escape “except my own inner doubt.”

The same thing happens when you search for Obama within 20 words of “Columbia University.”

On December 27, 2007, Merida glossed over it in a Jesse Jackson passage: “Obama was a recent graduate of Columbia University when Jackson launched his first campaign, and once told Jackson that he was inspired watching him on television debating Walter Mondale and Gary Hart. Now, Obama is trying to carve out a legacy of his own.”

There’s Merida in August of 2008, and then on October 17, 2008, there was a fleeting mention of Columbia, in an Eli Saslow story on Obama’s taste for solitude: “He had always guarded his space, once living in such seclusion as a student at Columbia University that when his mother visited his barren New York apartment, she chastised him for being ‘monklike.’”

After the election, there was more of the same on the editorial page on December 14, 2008 in a David Ignatius column:

Barack Obama wrote in “Dreams From My Father” of his days as a student at Occidental College, groping for his political identity: “We smoked cigarettes and wore leather jackets. At night, in the dorms, we discussed neocolonialism, Frantz Fanon, Eurocentrism and patriarchy.”

Don’t you think the voters would have liked to know if young Obama was into terrorist-inspiring thinkers like Frantz Fanon and had a radical anti-Western problem with “Eurocentrism and patriarchy?” Ignatius thought exploring that passage is “silly.” No one needs to know what Obama thought in 1981! (But the Post thinks you need to know Romney cut a kid’s hair on the quad in 1965.)

PS: The Post had a little more interest in the “Harvard Law School” part of his resume, mostly as a sign of Obama’s belonging in the elite. Post political reporter Chris Cillizza explained an ad on June 26, 2007:
