The Campus Cure: A Parent’s Guide to Mental Health and Wellness for College Students

Ridgewood NJ, in her new book, The Campus Cure: A Parent’s Guide to Mental Health and Wellness for College Students is a first aid guide to your child’s emotional health, preparing you to handle the mental health problems and emotional ups and downs many young adults experience in college. With anecdotes and the latest scientific literature, this book will increase your awareness of common problems, pressures, and crises in college; illustrate how you can support your child and collaborate with campus resources; and provide stories of hope to parents who often feel alone and overwhelmed when their child experiences a mental health problem. While you have the passion to help your child, this book will provide you with the tools to guide your child toward health and happiness in the college years.
After decades as a psychiatrist working with college students, Dr. Marcia Morris took on a mission: to educate parents of high school and college students about the dramatic increase in mental health problems young adults experience, and the practical tools parents can use to help their children. Her 2015 New York Times article, “Dear Parent, Your Child Has Had a Psychotic Break” received widespread attention from both parents and mental health professionals. Her parenting articles have appeared in the Tampa Bay Times, The Conversation, the Gainesville Sun, and the Ocala Star Banner. She currently writes a Psychology Today parenting blog on “College Wellness: Promoting Happiness and Health in the College Years.”
Educating other psychiatrists about university mental health, Dr. Morris has written articles in psychiatry publications about suicide prevention, sexual assault, and medical student stress. In 2017, she presented talks at national meetings of the American Psychiatric Association, American College Counseling Association, and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education on the role of parents in college mental health. Dr. Morris is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida College of Medicine and the Associate Program Director for Student Health Psychiatry. Dr. Morris received an undergraduate degree from Harvard University, a medical degree from Yale University, and psychiatry residency training at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center. She is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of its College Mental Health Caucus.
Dr. Morris is committed to working with both parents and health care providers to find solutions to the intensifying college mental health crisis. With “The Campus Cure,” she hopes to give parents the tools that will lead their child from distress to success.
Sanctuary Phil Makes His Moves

Trenton NJ, the Washington Post reported that when Phil Murphy takes office as New Jersey’s next governor, he plans to establish a state agency geared toward aiding undocumented immigrants. Murphy, a Democrat who held the ambassador post under President Barack Obama after several years as a Goldman Sachs executive, said the agency would be called the Office of Immigrant Defensive Protection.
Murphy previously vowed to make New Jersey a sanctuary state if President Donald Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Governor Phil Murphy said in a tweet , “Honored to be sworn in as the new Governor of this great state in just a few short days. Together, we will build a stronger and fairer New Jersey for all. ” Critics claim “fairer New Jersey “is code for massive tax increases which will be needed to fund Sanctuary Phil’s wish list state.
While New Jersey faces catastrophic fiscal issues , the new governor is dead set on a significant expansion of failed policies that have lowered the quality of life in New Jersey and forced so many residents and businesses to flee the state .
Resident is suburban bastions like Ridgewood can be assured to take the brunt of Murphy’s far left agenda .
Affordable Housing Litigation and how its effecting the Village of Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, councilmen Ramon Hache gave us an update of the Affordable Housing Litigation and how its effecting the Village of Ridgewood .
According to the councilmen , “This litigation continues from 2015 when the Village filed its Declaratory Judgment complaint in Superior Court seeking approval of its adopted housing plan and immunity from builders remedy law suits while the decision by the Court was pending. Presently, the Village enjoys immunity from suit until the end of January, 2018. It is conducting Court mandated settlement negotiations with Fair Share Housing Center managed by the Court appointed Special Master, Michael Bolan, PP. The effort is to resolve all issues with FSHC and reach an understanding with the Special Master and all interested parties to present an agreed upon Fair Share and Housing Plan to the Court sometime in the next few months of 2018. A significant part of the Housing plan designed to meet the constitutionally mandated requirement of providing affordable housing in the Village was approved in 2017 by the Planning Board for 4 developments in the Central Business district. These four developments are known as:
KS Broad -Ken Smith site;
The Enclave – South maple and East Ridgewood avenue intersection;
Chestnut Village – Chestnut Street, north of Franklin Avenue;
The Dayton – formerly Brogan Cadillac site on South Broad Street ”
Councilmen Hache states , “the Village council has pushed very hard to lower the density of each development and provide a component of “Special Needs” housing in at least one of the developments with the assistance of the Untied Way to assist persons and families in the area who are searching for residential living accommodations for special needs individuals. Settlement negotiations may provide additional Special Needs housing through an agreement with West Bergen Mental Healthcare and the Chestnut Village developers that will require approval of the master, FSHC and ultimately the Court.”
Details of the number of units of each development can be obtained by reading the Planning Board’s Resolutions of approval of each development.

Reader slams Councilman Voigt’s letter in the Ridgewood News about all the good Healthbarn does for the Village
One of the most disturbing things is how Councilman Voigt wrote in the Ridgewood News about all the good Healthbarn & Stacey does for the Village. Jeff….news flash so do a lot of charities in the Village but you failed to mention them!! The other charities are run by Village residents something Stacey is NOT. Why does the Village continue to suck up to Healthbarn? Haven’t we given her enough? She has abused her lease over & over again & yet nothing has been done. Healthban already pays under market value for rent extra land for her garden & parking spaces. Sweet deal made possible because she was connected to the right people like her good friend Roberta. Hillcrest neighborhood is suffering because the Village has a blind eye when dealing with Healthbarn. If I was the landlord to a business that has caused a lot of problems to the neighbors & violated the lease multiple times & lied about her business plan I would kick her out!!’ I wouldn’t want to put neighbors in harms way to a business that has charted busses causing dangerous situations on Hillcrest, adults drinking alcohol at her restaurant style dinners & adult parties none of which were discussed at her VC meeting when council voted on it. Those things alone should be cause for termination!!! Not to mention the tent she puts up on park land for hours at a time. She uses way more land then just her garden all for $3,700 a month. Does the Council work for Stacey or for the residents? The way I look at it is Stacey gets a pass when we get fined for leaves in the street. Stop it NOW let’s stop helping Healthbarn successed & treating a non residents business better then the tax payers!!!

CRAB has long outlived its usefulness and veered off into personal politics. This is hardly a group to objectively advise the council. Sometimes a group’s having been in existence for a long time is a reason to end it, not continue it blindly. There is no good reason now for Ridgewood and Glen Rock to be united in this one way and only this way. It’s dumb.

Regardless of the huge multitude of requests to have the council look into the Health Barn and the huge number of complaints by local residents whose neighborhood has literally been destroyed, Nothing is being done, said, or explained. The council probably couldn’t even describe what the elephant in the room looks like as they are too busy walking around it to act. They apparently have decided if they ignore the whole thing, it will go away. NOT! I guess they are leaving it for the new council to take care of as they certainly cannot be expecting to be elected again based on the “tremendous” response they have shown to ANY Ridgewood problems. They saddest thing is all the money they are wasting by their procrastination and determination to do things that residents do not want (garage?) They seem to be all good individuals that collectively are scared of their shadows and any possible negative remark about them by residents. So Stacey could sue. Her prior actions have been to sue anyone she disagrees with but that was known about her before that contract was signed. Council JUST DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING BUT SNORE THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE DISCUSSION OF THE PROBLEM!

The FAC is dead, keep it that way. No offense, but financial experience in the private sector does not equate at all to experience in the public sector. They are very different animals and the previous FAC was completely clueless on village operations and department function in hopes of saving pennies. Yet overlooked major holes such as the parking authority, human resources (remember that mess) and a manager who was living in candyland. We elect council members to oversee the operation, if they are doing their job there is no need for a FAC.
And lets be honest with each other, the zoo that needs a cleaning is on Cottage Place. If the FAC has no authority to give opinion on that money pit, then whats the point. Pennies saved on property taxes isnt worth the insane opinion of so called experts. Been There…. Done That.

Super Science Saturday was started in 1989 by Mr. Jim Wallace, a sixth grade science teacher at Ridgewood’s Benjamin Franklin Middle School. What began solely as a science day for students has evolved into a broad experience for children, adults, and families from all over the tri-state area. Now in its 28th year, Super Science Saturday is an annual, half-day, non-competitive event providing a showcase for the variety of scientific explorations and applications that are alive in our community. Not only do professional science presenters share their work, it is unique in that students present alongside them, learning from adult presenters as mentors and peers.
Though Mr. Wallace has since retired from the Ridgewood Public Schools, his small idea has grown to a day that brings over 1,500 area residents together to celebrate science. As we look to “reinvent” Super Science Saturday this year, we increasingly rely on the community to provide support before and during the event. On Monday, January 15, the Ridgewood community will celebrate the annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday with a full schedule of activities beginning at 10 am at the Ridgewood Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street.
The event will begin with a 10 a.m. interfaith service with the Rev. Dr. Calvin G. Sampson.
The service will be followed by an outdoor march through downtown Ridgewood and a community lunch. The program will also feature Ridgewood and Glen Rock student speakers and musical performances by the Indian Hills Chamber Choir, Men of Umoja Chorus and The Young Voices of Mr. Bethel.
Please communicate the value of this remembrance celebration to your children. I look forward to joining you on Monday, January 15.

Since 1947, Jamboree has presented an original musical revue to raise need-based scholarship funds for college bound Ridgewood High School seniors.Over 125 individuals have volunteered their time and skills to put on a show that runs for 4 nights.
