Mahawah NJ, At 4:40am on Christmas morning Mahwah Police were called about a fire at Arzee building supply on Franklin Tpk. All 5 Mahwah fire companies were dispatched and responded. First arriving chief officers saw a large amount of fire at the back of the building that stretches nearly a full city block.
The fire eventually went to 5 alarms and brought in 25+ mutual aid departments from Bergen, Rockland, and Passaic counties. Crews remained on scene for more than 12 hours trying to gain access to areas which collapsed but were still on fire, but ultimately we had to wait for heavy equipment to arrive to uncover the pockets of fire that were still burning. Reports from the Mahwah Water Dept flow meters show that nearly 800,000gal of water were used to bring this fire under control and prevent any damage to exposures.
We want to thank all the responding mutual aid departments and agencies for taking time away from their families on Christmas morning to help battle the intense fire. Huge thank you to @novinonj Italian Restaurant, they were closed for Christmas Day but opened their doors and fired up the ovens to cook pizzas for all the personnel involved in extinguishing the blaze. Thank you to Dunkin Donuts and Stryker for your donations as well.
