RHS Applied Engineering’s FireGone Team Takes Second at Thomas Edison Pitch Contest

Ridgewood NJ, the RHS Applied Engineering’s FireGone Team competed in person in the Thomas Edison Pitch Contest held at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange on Wednesday, May 18. The team was chosen as one of three finalists in the high school division. Approximately 800 students forming 300 teams from 26 states and four countries participated in the contest. The FireGone Team – juniors Alex Mueller, Michael Ip, Zahir Syed, and Praket Nigam – pitched their Wildfire Assessor prototype to an expert panel of judges consisting of education professionals, Edison scholars, and technical/business experts.  The team was awarded second place, winning science kits for the high school!

Man Indicted for Allegedly Dumping Raw Sewage into a West Milford Lake

West Milford NJ, Acting Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced today that a New York man was indicted by a state grand jury for allegedly illegally collecting solid sewage waste and discharging it into a storm drain that emptied into West Milford Lake in West Milford, NJ in March 2021.

Ridgewood Water Well Head Public Scoping Notice

Ridgewood NJ, the Village of Ridgewood has contacted the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Green Acres Program, proposing to legalize an after-the-fact diversion of roughly 100 square feet of Maple and Graydon Parks (Block 3209, Lots 1 and 3; 259 N Maple Avenue and 200 Northern Pkwy) in connection with the past installation of a wellhead necessary for the continued functioning of the Village’s water system. Additionally, Ridgewood requested a .029-acre subsurface diversion to allow for the connection of the new well to the existing water lines.

First Round of Funding from the $125 Million Library Construction Bond Act Awarded

Ridgewood NJ, Governor Phil Murphy today delivered to the Legislature a list of proposed projects for the first round of funding from the Library Construction Bond Act (LCBA). The Library Construction Bond Act authorized $125 million in state bonds to fund critical improvements to New Jersey public libraries. The bond issuance was approved by New Jersey voters in November 2017 and all applicants were required to identify a 50 percent match to fund their proposed projects.

NJ Health Experts Warn to Take Precautions Against Mosquitoes to Safeguard Against West Nile Virus

Ridgewood NJ, As New Jersey enters the peak of West Nile Virus (WNV) season, the New Jersey Department of Health and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases by taking simple steps to reduce populations of the insect on their properties.

New Jersey now has two human cases of WNV. The first case was found in a male in his 40s from Essex County, which was reported earlier this month.  A second case was confirmed in a male in his 70s from Monmouth County.
