Reader says its time for Ridgewood to consider later start times for School
The science on kids and sleep is the driver. The studies point to the need for more sleep, the fact that teens can’t physically go to sleep before 11 and the positive impact on the brain to getting 8hrs sleep.
School asks kids to be at their most alert when they are not, why not maximize the learning opportunities to the brain. A better educational experience is the best preparation for the real world.
It is more the science of sleep and impact on learning than preparation for a post-college life so the science is there…the test case in nearby Wilton, CT is there…when will Ridgewood start considering this?
Guilford weighs later start times for high school students

GUILFORD >> An extra hour of sleep is considered a luxury to most, but many say it’s a necessity for high school students. And now several school districts are considering giving that extra hour to its older students, not because they’re feeling magnanimous, but for the safety, physical and academic benefits that extra hour of sleep brings.
The Guilford Board of Education is one district contemplating the change. As the board begins its 2015-16 budget process, its list of priorities includes the investigation of the benefits of later starting times for the older students.
“It’s been on the table for years,” said Board of Education Chairman William Bloss. “It’s really driven by medical science — it seems like every year or two there is a study that describes the advantages to later start times for teens and how medically and educationally it is in the students’ best interest.”
Ridgewood High School library gets 21st century update

School leaders last week celebrated the opening of the Learning Commons at Ridgewood High School, a project driven by a multi-year effort from residents and the district to upgrade the decades-old library.
For months during construction, students had been sitting on the floors and in the cafeteria during their free periods without a space to study, but school officials said the wait was worth it.
“A little inconvenience brings us a great facility for all our students at Ridgewood High School,” said Superintendent Daniel Fishbein.
The space doubles the amount of seating, to 200 for students, providing them with cubby spaces to work independently and conferences rooms to work in groups.
Curved tables in the Commons’ open area were designed for more than just aesthetic appeal. They can fit together like puzzle pieces to accommodate large classes and can be pulled apart for just one or two students.
There is bar-style seating where kids can do homework and oversized comfy chairs and large colorful couches for reading.
The light from the library’s existing windows was maximized by lowering the height of the bookshelves. Windows were created facing out into the hallway to make the space seem even bigger.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
The Ridgewood community is pioneering a path to help support the district’s high school through an alumni association.
Last month, the ad-hoc group formalized itself by electing four officers and creating a board of trustees.
Their first official meeting on Sept. 30 was followed days later, on Oct. 2, with a dinner for alumni at Novo Restaurant.
Thomas Gorman, principal of RHS and a Class of ’87 graduate, said more than a dozen people attended the Sept. 30 meeting where Keith Dawkins was elected president, Jacqueline Hennessey (Class of ’87) was elected vice president, Steven Correll (Class of ’88) was elected treasurer, and Siobhan Winograd (Class of ’91) was elected secretary.
“On some level it was kind of a no-brainer for me [to be involved] in that I’m a RHS alum, my boys – I have an eighth-grader and a fifth-grader – will be RHS alum,” Dawkins said. “The school did a lot for me, and it’s going to do a lot for them.”
Dawkins said he envisions the association being a “powerful network that gives back into the Ridgewood ecosystem,” but short-term he’s excited about the “passion and enthusiasm” from the community.
“[Superintendent] Dr. [Daniel] Fishbein got an email from an alumnus who lives in China and he wants to not be left out,” Gorman said. “It’s growing. A lot of people who couldn’t make it [to the meeting] said, ‘I want to be involved. Get my name on the list’.”

Ridgewood teen’s record-setting swim has family and classmates cheering

THE RECORD
In a matter of hours, she would make history by becoming the youngest person ever to achieve the Triple Crown of open-water swimming — completing a swim across the English Channel after circumnavigating Manhattan in June and swimming the Catalina Channel off the coast of California in August.
But as Charlotte Samuels, a 16-year-old from Ridgewood, crept through choppy, frigid water Monday afternoon, that goal seemed impossibly distant. She could see the French coastline. But the land didn’t seem to be getting any closer, she shouted to her mother, Suzanne, who was cheering her on from a tracking boat.
The team on the boat began reading her messages from supporters, Suzanne said in an email. A message from her swimming coach told her to “Keep her head down and keep swimming.”

And so she did.
She sang songs in her head. She thought, at times, that she was sleeping. And she faced swells of 4 to 6 feet that forced her to sprint the last two miles, her mother said.
By the time Charlotte scrambled onto the beach on the French shore around 5 p.m. (11 a.m. New Jersey time), all that seemed like it might have been a dream, she told her mother later. Not only had she reached her goal, she had done all three swims in just over two months, perhaps the shortest span that anyone had ever completed the swimming trifecta, Suzanne said.

Ridgewood High School students to be issued laptops

On Sept. 4, all high school students will be given a Chromebook as the district moves toward its full embrace of technology.
The Ridgewood Board of Education (BOE) introduced a resolution on July 21 to enter into a five-year lease agreement for $485,000, at an annual interest rate of 1.469 percent, to purchase a Chromebook for every student in the high school.
To offset the cost, the district also accepted a $100,000 grant from The Ridgewood Education Foundation in support of the 1:1 Technology Initiative.
“Thank you for this,” Board President Sheila Brogran said to Foundation officer Jennie Smith Wilson. “It helps us put our 1:1 initiative in place. All four grades at the high school will have the opportunity to have Chromebooks.”
For the high school’s roughly 1,750 students, the Chromebooks will cost about $550,000, said Superintendent Daniel Fishbein. The district budgets about $900,000 per year for technology, he said.
Ridgewood began welcoming laptops and iPads in 2012 with a Bring Your Own Device program and purchased carts of Chromebooks for use at the elementary schools.
