To all business owners and employees in Ridgewood
important notice about parking!

Beginning October 20, 2014, PARKING PERMITS maybe purchased at Village Hall (first floor receptionist desk)-for $80 per month – Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm – you must have proof of employment and your driver’s license with you at the time of purchase – cash/check and/or credit cards accepted.

PARKING: More action is needed, not meetings

OCTOBER 3, 2014    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2014, 9:16 AM
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

More action, not meetings, is needed
Angela Cautillo

To the Editor:In the Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, issue of The Ridgewood News, I was reading the article titled “Panel says parking is source of problems.” It was good to hear the comments from business owners and landlords alike, but is this really news to anyone? Ridgewood is not moving forward was the message.

The article also stated that the meeting attracted the smallest turnout in the series so far, only being attended by 30 people. That’s not surprising.

Yes, a low turnout is disappointing, but I would probably have to say it’s because so many Ridgewood business owners are thinking “been there, done that.” You can find in the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce archives that it was determined by Ridgewood business leaders that there was a parking problem back in 1924.

As a former board member of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce and later as its director, I tried to get the ball rolling for a parking garage in the business district. I urged the then council that it was for the future of Ridgewood’s business success, but all that happened was more money wasted on yet another parking study that said we needed more parking.

I was told by a former village manager that I would never see a parking garage in Ridgewood. It was very disheartening to hear and very sad to see the lack of vision of the Village Council at the time. Yet the buck keeps getting passed, since it’s been more than two decades after my push, 90 years after the first record of a parking problem in Ridgewood and there’s still non-solution.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The 21st annual Fall Car Show will rev up tonight on East Ridgewood Avenue and around Memorial Park at Van Neste Square.

The show’s sponsor, the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce, is expecting more than 350 cars.

“They come from all over the tri-state area for the show, as far as Philadelphia to upstate New York,” said Tom Hillmann, owner of Hillmann Lighting and co-founder of the car show.

“What I can say is that we always have some very unusual cars, cars that no one else has ever seen at any of the car shows in the region,” he said.

Last year, there were more than 5,000 attendees.

“It’s an event for everyone, from families to car enthusiasts,” said Hillmann. “People really enjoy looking at the cars and talking to owners.”

Some of the cars registered for this year’s event range from a 1948 MG TC KRD5T, to a 1957 Ford Thunderbird to a 1958 Morris Minor 1000 convertible.

Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place in categories such as imports, hot rods, muscle cars and best motorcycle, and the mayor’s choice/best of show category.

New signs to point shoppers to stores in Ridgewood

The village will soon install new destination signs at the main crossroads of the Central Business District (CBD), the next phase in the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce’s effort to boost foot traffic and promote storefronts along the downtown’s side streets.

Nine metal placards, each bearing the name of participating Oak Street retailers, restaurants or other professional services, will be fixed at the northeast corner of the Oak and East Ridgewood Avenue intersection. Chamber members have focused this round of their project on the Oak Street corridor, but they anticipate extending the sign program to other roads, including Chestnut and Broad streets.

The project has taken nearly one year to implement. Officials at the Chamber of Commerce pitched their idea to the Ridgewood Council last March, when business owners Tom Hillmann and Paul Vagianos described the signs as a way to “clean up” the appearance of East Ridgewood Avenue, the main thoroughfare of the downtown area, and direct pedestrians to establishments on the secondary roadways.

Parking Garage Will Cost $6+ Million to Build

>Picture 0029
The Fly has just learned that it will cost at least $6 million to construct the proposed 300-space municipal parking garage on North Walnut Street. This estimate excludes related property acquisition costs (add at least another $1.245 million) and site remediation costs (unknown at this time).

The projected costs are based on the currently accepted industry standard construction rate of $20K per parking space. However, since there are already 100+ surface parking spaces on North Walnut Street, construction costs will substantially exceed $20K per parking space when viewed on a “net spaces gained” basis.

Furthermore, an Executive Vice President of one of the most prominent commercial real estate development firms in North Jersey recently advised The Fly that estimated annual carrying charges for such a facility could approach $1 million (includes salaries, utilities, debt service, insurance, etc.).

The Fly continues to question the wisdom of constructing a multi-million dollar parking facility, several blocks from Ridgewood’s train station, on a “Field of Dreams” basis. Are Village Council members absolutely certain that when they build it, people will come?

The Fly thinks that this project has all the potential of becoming “Ridgewood Village Hall, The Sequel.” That is, a fully taxpayer funded money pit.
