The SAT remains the top college entrance exam in New Jersey, where the majority of high school students take the multiple choice test to get into college.

But a growing number of New Jersey teens are trying their luck with the ACT exam. Last year, almost a third of graduating students took the ACT in New Jersey, according to the company that oversee the test.

For the first time this year, the state Department of Education’s School Performance Reports included the mean ACT scores reported by hundreds of the state’s high schools. ACT exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 36.

Local student entrepreneur helps Ridgewood Historical Society with some heavy lifting

Joe Rahaim, is a rising senior at Ridgewood High School and Owner and Founder of Joe's Odd Jobs
June 13,2017
Vicky Herbert‎

Ridgewood NJ, According to Vicky Herbert‎ ,When the Ridgewood Historical Society and Schoolhouse Museum needed some heavy lifting, they called on local student entrepreneur, Joe Rahaim. We had bulky furniture and years of accumulated material in the attic we needed moved ,” said Historical Society volunteer, Kelly Gioia. Since the non-profit organization didn’t have regular volunteers with the strength, nor did they have a budget, Gioia called Joe’s Odd Jobs. Joe was happy to volunteer his time and said he would reach out to get some of his student crew to help too. “When I put the text out to my regular workers, the response was amazing, everyone wanted to help even though it was going to be an unpaid project,” said Joe Rahaim, “the Ridgewood community and it’s word of mouth have been very good to me, my business, and my team so we were happy to give back to the Historical Society”.

Joe Rahaim, is a rising senior at Ridgewood High School and Owner and Founder of Joe’s Odd Jobs, a local business he started his freshman year of high school. The business started out as a way to work given his busy sports schedule, but as word got out, he couldn’t do all the jobs himself and had to enlist fellow students. The business has now grown to a 10- plus person operation. “I found a niche”, said Rahaim, we do a lot of small projects like moves, clean-outs, minor landscaping, and small painting jobs. “It has been a great experience for me, I like hands-on projects and most of all, working with a great crew that knows how to have fun and work hard,” said Rahaim”

Ridgewood High School

Ridgewood NJ, For 12 years running, proceeds from the tournament have benefited the Nick Currey Fund for Ewing Sarcoma Research.

The Thirteenth Annual Wiffle® for Cancer Tournament will be held rain or shine (but hopefully shine!) on Sunday, June 11, 2017, check-in begins at 11:30am, and the tournament starts at 12:00 noon at Ridgewood High School, 627 East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.

Registration will be limited to 64 teams. Teams consist of 3 to 5 players (the maximum number of players that can be in the field at any one time is 5), but unlimited substitutions are allowed. So, if some members of your team can’t stay for the entire tournament, you can sign up additional players to take their place.

The tournament features two divisions–a “competitive” division for those teams who want to have fun, but also want to compete seriously for a shot at bragging rights as tournament champion, and a “recreational” division for those teams that primarily just want to have fun. Please indicate which division you would like to play in when you sign up.

The tournament consists of a six-game round robin followed by a single-elimination round leading to a championship (with trophies!) for each division. In the round robin, teams will be grouped into four-team brackets and assigned to a particular field. Each team will play every other team in the bracket once, insuring that every team will play at least three games.

Trophies/prizes will also be awarded for best team name, shirt and costume, so be creative!

The rules of play can be found on the Rules page.

Ridgewood High School Social Norms Survey Called “Questionable ” by Reader

RHS social norms

As someone who conducts many surveys as part of my job in communications, a survey like this is questionable. To start with the people most likely to respond to a survey, take the time out to thoughtfully and honestly do so, are the ones most likely to report positive behaviors. I dont have data on it, but my experience says that those students who are engaging in the less than optimal behaviors arent going to wast their time on a survey or answering honestly. I didnt notice, did it say what % of students responded? Would have been interesting to have also had them gather additional data such as which Elementary school they went to (neighborhood data) and if possible average GPA. If this data was true, we wouldnt be seeing and hearing about it so much. Very concerning. I’d like to figure out how we can actively address this!

The 15 best jobs if you’re under 25—and they pay at least $40k

RHS_BEST_theridgewoodblog

Published: Mar 24, 2017 8:06 a.m. ET

You might love watching reruns of Law & Order, but just because you get a kick out of watching people duke it out in a courtroom on TV doesn’t mean you should go to law school. Yet 25% of high-school students choose their future career based on something they saw on TV or in a movie, according to research from CareerBuilder.

Choosing a college major or career because it seems cool can backfire. A third of full-time workers come to regret their college major, CareerBuilder found. But by the time they realize they’ve made a mistake, doing a career reset is costly and complicated. Better to pick right the first time than have to start all over again in your 20s or 30s once you realize you’re not really cut out to be (or can’t make it as) a software engineer, salesperson, or screenwriter. But how to choose?

“There is a world of opportunity open to younger workers in business, technical and creative fields,” Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer at CareerBuilder, said in a statement. To narrow down the choices, you need to consider both your own passions and the potential salary and available job opportunities, Haefner added. “The more informed you are about your options and what it takes to get to where you want to be, the better the outcome,” she said.

Opinion: College admissions are so random we’d be better off turning it into a lottery

Graduation 13

Published: Mar 23, 2017 1:19 p.m. ET

The high school senior qualified to audition for all-state choir, but he’d also been invited to interview for the prestigious Jefferson Scholarship, which promised a full ride to the University of Virginia worth $125,000. He couldn’t be in both places at the same time.

“Unfortunately,” warned the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, “the flexibility will have to come from the choral organization, or you will have to choose between the two.”

The Virginia Choral Directors Association was just as uncompromising. It cautioned that only an illness “severe enough that continued participation would be harmful to the student’s health” would excuse the 17-year-old choir president from a full day’s attendance.

The annual mating dance between high school seniors and the nation’s colleges and universities is under way, and it’s not pretty. Class of 2020 decision letters will go out at month’s end, even as tuition and fees rise faster than inflation, producing about $107 billion in education debt last year, according to the College Board.

Super Science Saturday will appeal to everyone from the casual observer to the aspiring scientists. Most of all, we hope to spark an interest in science among children, showing them the wonders of science. Through interactive exhibits such as a wheelchair maze, live animals, and demonstrations of chocolate making to more complex brain wiring demonstrations, Super Science Saturday will satisfy the scientific appetite of everyone.

Medical Waste Dumped Near Ridgewood High School

Medical Waste Dumped Near Ridgewood High School

December 21,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, A large plastic garbage bag filled with human medical waste products somehow wound up on a sidewalk near Ridgewood High School on Tuesday morning, 12/20. The improperly disposed of items were spotted by the manager of a garden apartment building located at 535 East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, who in turn notified Ridgewood PD. A Ridgewood EMS EMT assisted uniformed patrol officers and their supervisor in bagging the debris in plastic bio hazard disposal bags, which were then transported in the back of a marked police patrol unit to The Valley Hospital. The errant garbage bag contained no identifying material that would have allowed police officers to determine its origin.
