No the Village is not dead yet: we bowed to developers and people with new money thinking that we had to give way to excess in order to remain viable. Of course, just the opposite was true

>No the Village is not dead yet: we bowed to developers and people with new money thinking that we had to give way to excess in order to remain viable. Of course, just the opposite was true.

I have been here since the 60’s and think it is still a great town. Yes, its changed a lot, but its not dead yet. And it needn’t die if folks step up and speak up.

The real problems started in the 90’s into the 2000’s. There is an attitude of those moving to town who thought “I can afford a house here, the town owes me.” Or, “I bought this property, I can do what I want with it.” A densely populated area can’t exist with that mind set.

Village management — the council, the village manager, the department heads — all scraped and bowed to developers and people with new money thinking that we had to give way to excess in order to remain viable as a town. Of course, just the opposite was true.

So, for too many years we tolerated someone who behaved like a drunken fool in the manager’s office. And when he couldn’t manage, key service departments, like the building department, grew out of control, In that department, for instance, we ended up with an uncomprehending management that unevenly applies the building and zoning laws of the Village through an apparent ignorance — if not outright hostility == of what the laws mean. And the years dominated by our two recent mayors were very much mis-spent. Taxes rose, services declined and civility and charm left. Its interesting to note that one recent mayor hightailed it out of here as soon as he retired. Apparently, he wasn’t going to go down with the ship he had mis-directed.

All the while, the attitude grew that it was ok to take from the Village and there was no corresponding need to give. The core value of what it meant to be a simple Village where you can relax in your backyards and your children can go to the best schools gave way to a grandiosity. We need the best hospital; we need turf fields; we need a hotel in the middle of town; we need a parking/commercial space/apartment complex; we need bigger houses; etc. Some of those things we truly did and do need, and some we don’t. But there never seemed to be a genuine effort to compromise. For instance, while I may never again set foot on one of the natural or turf fields or the new Habernickel park, I happen to think open space and athletic fields and even lights for night time use constitute a good use of my tax dollars. Yet, I think it is moronic for anyone to suggest that eigth graders must practice until ten on school nights. I like Valley hospital, but think it is moronic to in effect surrender an entire portion of our town to let the Hospital grow so that it is commercially viable to the point where it seeks to attract customers from all over the tri-state area.

What to do? First, a return to civility. (And, as I look back, perhaps my post passes the border of what’s civil.) Second, a return to core values. Re-set Village standards and then set a clear course. Personally, I think we should remain a really great place to relax in your back yard and send your children to the best schools. Others, may see it differently and believe that we need to become of the urban tide. I think the greater challenge — but the far greater reward — lies with remaining a Village.

Some of the new council members might bring us there. Valley is first testing ground. If the planning board’s change in our municipal laws, and the master plan that has quided us for many years, is approved by the council, then I do think its time to sell my westside home before it is further devalued. A second test is the hundred apartments proposed for down town. I cringed when I heard one council member comment that a hundred apartment dwellers would flock to the village, and increase the tax base without draining Village services. I think that member has had time to rationally reflect since then. But imagine the effect of a hundred new apartments, attracting a 100 new couples and 200 hundred new cars competing for parking and street space in the middle of town.

I suppose we will see soon enough which direction we take.

Lets Turf Habernickel

Why is Habernickel never an option for a Turf field? With stands and a concession.

At least I see teams using the turf fields on the east side. You see maybe 15 kids a time on the precious Habernickel.

Please lets sell it to a developer to pay for all the services we have lost and get the town in a better finanical position.

A Coup d’état at the Zoning board of adjustment

>A Coup d’état at the Zoning board of adjustment
Pj Blogger and the Staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ – Fireworks were felt at the Zoning board of adjustment meeting when both Doug Cronk, a former council candidate, and Dean Vellis, a Fields Use Policy proponent, were not reappointed to the board.

It seems the Village is looking to clean house to avoid any impression of conflict of interest  before the controversial H-Zone ,Valley Renewal Village Council special meetings. The Village is looking to avoid a repeat of the  “I forgot to tell anybody my father was a Valley Trustee ”  death bed confession of a former Village Mayor.

Many viewed  the move as unexpected but is was rather difficult to not notice the impression that Doug  Cronk and his running mate Brian Dowd ran a very pro Valley campaign , perhaps accepting contributions and as many allege campaign support from Valley Hospital itself  , Doug also finds himself  involved with the “bogus” pro Valley Renewal group that has sprung up from the “artificial turf”. Cronk and Dowd were defeated by current members Deputy Mayor Tom Riche and Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh.

Dean Vellis who runs the junior football program in the Village, and is a big proponent of youth sports may have been targeted because of the continued anxiety over whether many of the ‘turf and field light projects have been alleged to have been misrepresented to the public.

The other elephant in the room was the mishandled  “Action Park” Graydon pool  project which was under the thumb of none other than Melinda Cronk the wife of Doug.

The house cleaning had already started with the “sudden departure” Planning Board Chairmen David Nicholson a Valley ally who was presiding over an extremely unpopular tenure at the Board.

While Cronk and Vellis claim the vote not to re-appoint was politically motivated the Village Council seems to have woken up to the fact that it is a new day in the Village and the last 15 years of “we can do what ever we want and your gonna pay for it” are now over.

A new professional atmosphere is reemerging  and perhaps the council is beginning to see both the liability and the folly of the all the incestuousness and parochial self interests that has so tarnished the image of the Village .

READER: Ridgewood BOE and Fishbein misrepresented the delivery of state grants in order to push through their pet projects

>READER: Ridgewood BOE and Fishbein misrepresented the delivery of state grants in order to push through their pet projects

What a shocker. Ridgewood BOE and Fishbein misrepresented the delivery of state grants in order to push through their pet projects and get the town to vote on the yes on the bond.

I even seem to remember Fishbein and Lenhard guaranteeing that the grants would not be held up in spite of the economic uncertainty of the state.

IT IS TIME TO FIRE FISHBEIN and vote no-confidence in Lenhard & Brogan and get them out of there. I would rather have the state takeover the school system that let these useless fools continue to run our school system into the poor house and put a drain on the taxpayers in the community.

Just to be note, I am not against spending money to ensure the future success of our children. However, money needs to be spent wisely and have a strong and provable return on investment. Turf fields that need replacement and continuous maintenance (b/c they were idiotically built in a flood zone) does not represent wise spending. The return on investment does come close to breaking even as not nearly enough of the student population benefits.

The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook is in major need of dredging, deepening, and cleaning

The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook is in major need of dredging, deepening, and cleaning

No question about it: the turf field served to exacerbate the flooding conditions at RHS experienced yesterday. I can recall a graduation ceremony held at RHS in 2001 during which thunderstorms, of about the same severity and intensity as those we saw yesterday, rolled through the area before and during the ceremony. The grass was very wet, but the field did not flood.

Here is what is going wrong: the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook is in major need of dredging, deepening, and cleaning; too, rules governing the construction of structures and fences within the flood plain of the brook need to be enforced. These are a few of the reasons why we are seeing the HHK brook overflow its banks with increasing frequency. And, of course, the turf field: located within the flood plain, it does not absorb the water but rather it collects it. Hence an area of pooled water that is very much in evidence in the photos provided

>An idea whose time has come: NYC Geese to Feed Needy in Pennsylvania

Let them Eat Geese

In an effort to feed the hungry New York City plans to send geese captured around its airports to a Pennsylvania slaughterhouse and then distribute them to food banks there.

The Department of Environmental Protection mad the decision following criticism that the gassed geese were dumped into landfills while the less fortunate go hungry.

A department spokesman told the The New York Times that it wanted its efforts to enhance public safety but also help the needy.

The Goose eradication was authorized after U.S. Airways Flight 1549 made a miraculous landing in the Hudson River in 2009 after a flock of geese got caught up in it’s engines causing an emergency landing.

If thinks work out the agency said that next year the geese will feed needy New Yorkers, but rumors swirl that many of New York’s finest gourmets are lining up to offer the fresh roadkill as a delicacy .

The History of Flag Day

4thofJuly_flag_theridgewoodblog

>

The History of Flag Day
https://usflag.org/history/flagday.html

The History Of Flag DayThe Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America’s birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as ‘Flag Birthday’. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as ‘Flag Birthday’, or ‘Flag Day’.

On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day.

Following the suggestion of Colonel J Granville Leach (at the time historian of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution), the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America on April 25, 1893 adopted a resolution requesting the mayor of Philadelphia and all others in authority and all private citizens to display the Flag on June 14th. Leach went on to recommend that thereafter the day be known as ‘Flag Day’, and on that day, school children be assembled for appropriate exercises, with each child being given a small Flag.
Two weeks later on May 8th, the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution unanimously endorsed the action of the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames. As a result of the resolution, Dr. Edward Brooks, then Superintendent of Public Schools of Philadelphia, directed that Flag Day exercises be held on June 14, 1893 in Independence Square. School children were assembled, each carrying a small Flag, and patriotic songs were sung and addresses delivered.

In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public school children’s celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating.

Adults, too, participated in patriotic programs. Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: “I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself.”
Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day – the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 – was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson’s proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year asNational Flag Day.

The Annual Village home owner flight is upon us
the Staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ – So its that time of the year again when  a new generation  of High School  seniors graduates and looks forward to reshaping the world in their own  image . The Future looks bright and there are nothing but an endless horizon of possibilities for as far as the eye can see .

But wait whats this , hundreds of homes for sale in the Village well timed  for sellers to coincidentally  skate just in the nick of time for the diplomas to be passed to the next generation of leaders. Amazing how those moving trucks line up in the driveways  so neatly of so many now former Ridgewood residents their bags packed

Now the empty Nester’s take flight ,yes flight from bills due for turf fields, stadium lights , and assorted other  amenities that’s useful life has now been fulfilled and long term liabilities must be avoided at all cost for over extended families.Leaving those left with ever higher property taxes , declining maintenance, quality of life and lower educational standards .

Board of Ed is not listening

>Board of Ed is not listening

Board of Ed is not listening. They turfed fields and installed stadium lights. Many of us did not want this and many neighbors fought this. They did it anyway because they think that they know better then the taxpayers.

There is a bit of a shake up in the math department, but it is too little too late. The HS freshmen are sweating the Algebra exam. It is May and the parents are scrambling to find tutors. Everyone is worried about failing the state test. The HS math department is now telling the middle school math teachers what to do. IT is all TOO LATE! It’s May for God’s sake – where have they been all year? Our children will pay the price for this educational malpractice.

Did I mention that they spent time & money fighting residents over the turf fields?

There are employees who do virtually nothing, but they have been working for the schools for so long they can’t be fired. School Principals don’t know anything about managing staff. They act like teachers who accidentally got promoted, they need to be managers. If office staff is uncooperative and does not work 7 hours a day, a good manager would document this and issue a warning. In six weeks they would look for improvement. If no progress has been made then they should begin termination proceedings. In our schools the principal just ignores the nonworkers and allows the overpaid assistant principals to pick up the slack.

The Skyward system could be improved. Why is Blackboard even on the website. Pick something and stick with it.

Fix your phone system and teach the staff how to pick up messages.

Stop hiding important information and leaving the same old information on the home page for the schools. The BOE election results don’t need to be on the middle school home page. And I am sure that the handful of parents sending to private schools have contacted the school for transcripts. Why is this info on the home page for the school? Maybe they could have notified the parents that 8th graders that the kids would be taking the NJ HS Algebra test. This is information that should have been front and center. An email was sent out this week, less than two weeks to prepare. Connected math will not help them with the test, but a good tutor will.

Did I mention that they fought the taxpayers over stadium lights for the fields?

The Board of Ed members need some Ritlin. I voted NO because they have not focused on education. They spend time and money on noneducational projects. They made bad choices with my money.

BOE seeking input from ‘no’ voters

Ridgewood school board seeking input from ‘no’ voters
Tuesday, May 10, 2011
BY KELLY EBBELS
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Staff Writer

The Ridgewood Board of Education (BOE) Finance Committee is reaching out to residents to get a sense of why they cast their ballots in favor of or against the most recent school budget.

The committee will host two open meetings with residents about the budget ballot question; the first will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 16 at the Education Center, 49 Cottage Place. A second meeting date will be determined at a later date, officials said.

Committee members said they would especially like to speak with those who voted against the $83 million budget for the 2011-2012 school year. The budget vote and election was held on April 27; 1,817 residents voted for the budget, with 1,448 voting against it.

Turf Field Safety : GMAX TEST RESULTS ARE IN

maple+field1-300x19911

>Turf Field Safety : GMAX TEST RESULTS ARE IN

Gmax testing is a standard measure of the safety of athletic fields. It involves measuring the shock absorbing properties of a playing surface and comparing the results to an industry standard set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Harder surfaces will increase the amount of impact absorbed by the body, which results in a higher Gmax rating. Scores over 200 are considered dangerous and increase the risk of life threatening head injuries. Preferred Gmax scores should be in the 120-150 range.

Things to Know About Gmax:

-The cumulative nature of the effects of head injury make it important to monitor the impact-related
-characteristics of sports surfaces.
-The higher the Gmax value, the lower the shock-absorbing properties of the surface.
-Gmax measurements are a fundamental tool of athletic field safety testing.
-Gmax is also useful in assessing the playability of a field; an athlete’s ability to cut and turn on the surface, the -rotational resistance and consistent footing it provides, and the support it gives without sacrificing speed and -quickness.

the Ridgewood blog endorses Christina Krauss for BOE

>At this time the Ridgewood blog would like to endorse Christina Krauss for school board and urge voters to Vote NO on the proposed school budget .

It is long overdue to have to have some differing voices and receptive ears on the BOE. Competing voices and competing ideas breed better solutions as opposed to the current one size fits all ,”the BOE knows better than you” attitude.

A NO vote for the School Budget carries little or no risk given last years minuscule cut by the Village Council. New economic realities demand new solutions and a greater focus on
academic discipline as well as fiscal discipline are now mandatory .

The BOE works for the Taxpayers and not the other way around. Schools are about students and we need to focus on education and learning . Teachers , NJEA reps ,administrators, turf fields and high priced education consultants are all secondary.

Missteps by the current BOE have been well documented , whether its “dumb dumb math” , turf fields in a flood zone, light gate or teacher giveaways .This BOE has for many years been perceived as arrogant , uncaring and beholden to special interests while standards have been lowered ,making it difficult to view the so called “tradition of excellence” as any thing more than mere empty words .

>Floods :Another way to look at it: If the BOE kept the grass fields but spent BIG $$$ on landscaping along North Irving and along the PSE&G Right-of-Way, would you now complain

Relax people. I wish we could tell which comments were real and which were set a bait to entice more negative commentary. I am sure that the 9:07 post was either that or a foolish attempt at humor.

Those who oppose these fields, at least be direct: If you are a neighbor and you’re worried about your back yard? I don’t blame you. But then also let us know if your property flooded LESS because the turf drained better than a grass field would. Honesty is a two way street.

If its worse? Say so. I’d imagine you could then bring suit agst the BOE. Funny that we havent had that analysis, but now you’re worried about “the kids.”

If this is costing the BOE money and us all money? I get it, believe me. But lets drop the B/S of old vs new residents, which has ntg to do with the conversation. That was bait, and I wouldnt put it past a smart neighbor to set the trap for everyone else.

Lets also drop the card about the dangerous conditions and how you saw kids splashing around in the waste. Save it. You arent worried about my kids. You are playing every card in the deck you can, b/c you are thinking about your own backyard.

I do feel for the neighbors. But stop with the lies.

Here is another way to look at it: If the BOE kept the grass fields but spent BIG $$$ on landscaping along North Irving and along the PSE&G Right-of-Way, would you now complain that the beautiful work was being damaged by these floods? If you and your home directly benefitted from it (like all of those with kids in the community hope to benefit from the improved fields), would you be beating such a drum about BOE waste?

Be honest. You wouldnt say a word. You’d expect the BOE to pay to re-plant your privacy buffers, and you’d complain when they didnt spend our tax dollars to do so.
