The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood
A Proud History

By Roberta Svarre

In 2005, The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood (also referred to as, “The Women Gardeners” or “the Club”) celebrated its 80th year of operation.   The organization owes its name to the fact that a “Garden Club of Ridgewood” was organized in 1914, but its membership was restricted to men.  Resentment at this exclusion motivated a group of dedicated women to form “The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood” under the leadership of Mrs. C.W. Stockton in 1925.  The club had twenty members and was a charter member of The Garden Club of New Jersey when it was organized.  No record of the men’s club remains.

During the Depression years of 1932-33, The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood was unable to pay dues to the state organization and instead became part of the Garden Department of the Women’s Club of Ridgewood.  That relationship continued until 1945, when membership in The Garden Club of New Jersey was reinstated.

Some of the longest continuing members of The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood remember serving as joint Hospitality Chairmen.  Since the club met in member’s homes, part of the position included hauling borrowed chairs from Van Emburgh’s Funeral Home to the home of the meeting hostess and back.

The Club has a long tradition of community service.  For many years members would travel to the Veteran’s Hospital in East Orange, where they would decorate the day rooms and chapel and make tray arrangements.

That tradition continues on the local level today.  The Women Gardeners designed and maintain the plantings at the Ridgewood Public Library and provides weekly flower arrangements for the library lobby.  The Club designed the garden for the Share house for elderly residents on Prospect Street and supported the garden at the Children’s Services and Family Counseling building.

The Women Gardeners of Ridgewood also provides tray favors for Meals on Wheels during the holiday season and makes centerpieces for the fundraising activities of various local charities.  The Club has participated in the showhouse at Skylands Manor, considered an exhibition opportunity for area garden clubs.

The Club is proud of its most recent addition, a Junior Program, “Green Kids” which was started September 2007.  Designed for children Grades 3 through 6, this program meets monthly to explore and discover nature, science, gardening, art, birding, weather, recycling, environment and our senses.

As part of its public education efforts, The Women Gardeners present semi-annual Garden Education Day featuring major speakers, workshops and/or boutiques.

The activities of the club are supported by a semi-annual garden tour called “SECRET GARDENS OF RIDGEWOOD.”   Begun as part of Ridgewood’s centennial celebration in 1994, Secret Gardens of Ridgewood has become one of New Jersey’s premier garden tours, with visitors coming from all over the metropolitan region.  More than 800 visitors toured the gardens in 2008.

Old horse barn in Ridgewood has ‘the right feel’

Representatives from two architecture firms sang similar praises for the cosmetic appearance of a former horse barn in Ridgewood. Now the Village Council is hoping that one of the companies will determine whether that structure, located at the Irene Habernickel Family Park, can be repaired and repurposed for use by recreation officials as well as the general public.

The horse barn project is the next phase of the village’s multi-step plan to convert the entire 10-acre property on Hillcrest Road, which Ridgewood purchased from the Habernickel family in 2004, into a public facility. Over the years, county and state grants helped fund the installation of playing fields, a parking lot and passive recreation areas at the site.

With the public’s increasing use of the land, Ridgewood safety and recreation department supervisors have said the park lacks certain amenities, but those accommodations could potentially be housed in a renovated horse barn. Officials said the building, which has weathered over time, could be restored to include adequate shelter from rain and lightning as well as provide space for restroom facilities.

At a council meeting last month, two separate architects briefly outlined their proposals for work on the barn. The architects recently responded to the village’s request for proposals and were identified by engineering and recreation officials as the viable bidders.

Ridgewood board begins hearings on proposed cell phone tower

APRIL 28, 2014    LAST UPDATED: MONDAY, APRIL 28, 2014, 12:34 AM

A land-use attorney and radio frequency engineer for AT&T defended an application to place a temporary 75-foot cell tower behind the Exxon Mobil station at 490 Route 17, explaining that it is a short-term measure to ensure reliable service.

The company is designing needed modifications to the permanent 120-foot cell tower already located nearby.

Six concerned Ridgewood residents, who live near the permanent flagpole-type cell tower, attended the Ridgewood Zoning Board hearing on Tuesday night, where a civil engineer for AT&T was also present.

The proposed temporary equipment, which will sit on a trailer with wheels, requires a use variance and various bulk variances, such as side and rear yard setbacks, according to Bruce Whitaker, the attorney for the zoning board. AT&T is also requesting waivers from site plan and design standard requirements found in the village’s zoning code.

A temporary tower at the site has been the subject of some contention for several months.

Coffee With the Chef: Lisa Mayisoglu of Lisa’s Mediterranean Cuisine, Ridgewood

APRIL 23, 2014    LAST UPDATED: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 2014, 12:16 PM
THE RECORD

Lisa’s Mediterranean Cuisine, Ridgewood

In 1985, Lisa Mayisoglu left Ankara with her family and started working in restaurants. Seven years ago, she opened her first Lisa’s Turkish Kitchen in Ridgewood. Her husband died a year later, leaving her to care for their three children alone. Two years ago, with the help of her sister, the 46-year-old chef moved locations and renamed her place Lisa’s Mediterranean Cuisine. The restaurant received three out of four stars from this newspaper. Here, Mayisoglu discusses why Turkish cuisine is good for you, her love for desserts and how she stays thin.

The most difficult dish to make: The dumplings ($18). It’s time-consuming. It’s a little dumpling stuffed with lamb and seasoning, but everything is done from scratch. We never buy anything from the outside. The Turkish kitchen is the most difficult to cook in, ’cause everything is done by hand. I know a lot of restaurants say that, but I know myself that it’s true here.

I make my own: Stock, tomato sauce, tahini, cacik [yogurt mixed with cucumber and seasonings], thick Turkish pita bread. A lot of customers take the bread home.

Turkish cuisine is … Unique. It’s very healthy. It’s Mediterranean. We cook with a lot of nuts, a lot of tomatoes, cucumbers. It doesn’t have a lot of creamy sauces, butter.

Advice for diners: Be happy.

Opening of coffee stand completes renovations at Ridgewood train station

Ridgewood-Trainstation1_theridgewoodblog

Ridgewood-Trainstation1_theridgewoodblog.net_

Ridgewood NJ, Amelia Ortiz had some extra pep in her step as she boarded her train Wednesday morning. It might have been the coffee.

Flo’s Depot at the Ridgewood train station officially opened for business Tuesday morning, exactly one week after its originally scheduled unveiling. No one, including Ortiz, seemed to mind the seven-day delay – after all, they have been waiting for almost five years for a coffee stand to re-open at the spot.

When New Jersey Transit began a multi-million dollar renovation project and forced the last coffee stand to permanently close its doors in 2009, morning rail riders were compelled to seek their caffeine jolts and breakfasts-on-the-go from other sources. For those residents opting against a travel mug of java from home, the extra stop at a nearby shop or bakery posed a minor inconvenience.

April 9th is Founders Day for the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood-nj

April 9th is Founders Day for the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, April 9, 2014 – The Ridgewood blog was founded in March of 2006 by James J Foytlin aka PJ Blogger .[1] Mr. Foytlin was born and raised in Ridgewood ,New Jersey and is a graduate of Ridgewood High School .[2] [3]

After many years living in New York City[4] Mr Foytlin returned to Ridgewood after a divorce and the tragic events of 9/11 . Once he settled in he noticed a lack of sufficient news coverage of local events . One day a friend from Brazil[5] showed him her home town on the internet and to Mr. Foytlin’s great surprise when he tried to reciprocate he was utterly dismayed at the absolute lake coverage of his home town. After all Ridgewood is only 18 miles from midtown Manhattan[6] the media capitol of world and there was not a single picture of Ridgewood to be found . How could this be? Ridgewood is a picturesque upper middle class village of around 25,000 located in Bergen county in northern New Jersey[7] . Founded by Dutch settlers before it became an English colony[8] . The town or village as its called is steeped in  rich history and tradition .Known for a large amount of Victorian era housing , a quality school system and a family friendly atmosphere.

Though busy getting reacquainted with his home town the fact that the Village of Ridgewood  was so under represented on the internet  continued to disturb Mr. Foytlin. Mr. Foytlin had been writing news letters for his job in financial services since the mid 1990’s . The popular flip, off beat investment strategy news letters had become email blasts with the advent of readily accessible internet.[9] By 2004 the email blasts were converted into blog format for the One Small Voice blog (https://onesmallvoice.blogspot.com/ ). [10]

Around that time the Village of Ridgewood had finally completed it’s much anticipated and long delayed renovation of the Village hall which has been flooded out due to Hurricane Floyd.[11] The renovation was marred by huge cost over runs and lengthy delays. In 2005 it opened with great fan fare , was once again flooded with the very first rain . Mr. Foytlin was more shocked by the abject lack of responsibility taken by elected officials than the fact that the $9 million dollar renovation had to some extent been a failure . That was the breaking point and Mr. Foytlin had had enough so he decided to give , citizen journalism a go and created the Ridgewood blog in March of 2006. [12]

The birth of PJ Blogger .By this time Blogging its seems had become quite the rage and mainstream news anchors such as Dan Rather had questioned the validity of information from non professionals sitting around in their Pajama’s blogging.[13] Mr. Foytlin not a fan of Dan Rather or any of the mainstream media decided to blog under the name PJ Blogger as a play on words and to plant himself firmly in the camp of the new digital media.

Innovations by the Ridgewood blog to citizen journalism.

“The Fly” is a column on the Ridgewood blog the originates from the expression ,”I’d like to be a fly on the wall “ . The idea is that every citizen has both a unique perspective and experience and these two factors can be used to gather news and opinions about local issues. Originally only of handful of people in town participated but with time the Ridgewood blog can now count on 30–50 semi regular contributors. These post are both anonymous and signed and are largely opinion as well a breaking news.[14]

The Ridgewood blog brings a free market lassie fare point of view to local issues . Mr. Foytlin aka PJ Blogger has stated that for local issues there are only two kinds of people ;the ones who say spend what every you want because I will not be around to pay the bill and the second group which are more focused on the ,”be careful this is my money your spending” . The Ridgewood blog is dedicated to the interplay of there two groups.[15]

Ridgewood NJ, The driver of a Lexus sedan wound up on the wrong side of a chain link fence on Monday afternoon while attempting to pull into a parking space in the rear of a medical office building located at 505 Goffle Road, Ridgewood.  Ridgewood Police Department officers removed both uninjured occupants of the vehicle and safely escorted them away from an active railroad line.  Ridgewood Fire Department personnel assisted in the removal of a portion of the fence to facilitate recovery of the Lexus.  It is believed the driver may have mistaken the accelerator pedal for the brake pedal.  A flatbed tow truck removed the car from the scene.

Midland Park to contact Ridgewood about illegal parking by Ridgewood residents

APRIL 3, 2014    LAST UPDATED: THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2014, 12:31 AM
BY LYNN BRUGGEMANN
CORRESPONDENT
MIDLAND PARK SUBURBAN NEWS

MIDLAND PARK – The Borough Council will be reaching out to Ridgewood officials to rectify unsafe parking conditions along Maltbie Avenue when parents pick up their children at nearby Ridge Elementary School.

Residents of Maltbie, many living north of Franklin Avenue, attended the March 27 council meeting to share their experiences and frustrations with blocked driveways, illegal parking near stop signs and unsafe road conditions that are occurring on a regular basis.

“I have lived here for 30 years and the last five years have been unbearable,” said Lorraine DeLuca. “I avoid West Ridgewood Avenue from 2:45 to 3: 15 p.m. It is dangerous.”

Maltbie begins at Godwin Avenue and continues north, crossing Franklin Avenue, which becomes West Ridgewood Avenue, before ending at Busteed Drive. Ridge Elementary School is at 325 W. Ridgewood Ave.

Resident Arthur “Skip” Marchetti first brought the matter to the attention of Mayor Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan during a monthly “Coffee With the Mayor.”
