“New Jersey must continue to make sound investments in our transportation infrastructure,” Sen. Gerry Cardinale said. “Families and commuters rely heavily on well-maintained bridges. Bridges and roads in Mahwah and Montvale, for example, are in desperate need of repairs. I am relieved to see that these communities will receive $1.3 million in grants, so that they can complete construction without burdening taxpayers.”
The Local Bridges, Future Needs grant program (LBFN) is funded through the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF), and will provided more than $47 million in funding to New Jersey’s 21 counties for county bridge improvement projects, including reconstruction plans in Montvale Borough and Mahwah Township.
The 2018 LBFN grants were based on a NJDOT formula that took into account the total bridge deck area in each county, as well as the portion of bridge infrastructure within each county that was rated in poor condition.
The projects funded in Legislative District 39, which encompasses parts of Bergen and Passaic Counties, include:
• Repairing the Ramapo Valley Road Culvert: $800,000
• Repairing the Magnolia Avebye Bridge: $500,000
“Investing in our public infrastructure, including our bridges, helps our local economy thrive,” Asm. Robert Auth said. “The $1.3 million in grants for projects in Montvale and Mahwah will keep our local roads safe, well-maintained, accessible for all of the residents, commuters, and hardworking business owners who use this infrastructure every day.”

Ridgewood NJ, according to councilmen Hache ,the paving work on our roads has begun. The County is currently paving its roads in various areas of the Village. The Village has begun to work on the manholes. We expect the concrete work will begin by mid May. The paving of Village-owned streets will begin once the concrete work has been completed. We expect to pave approximately 7.5 miles of roads over the next 12 months. In the meantime, please refer to our 2018 Ridgewood Paving List : https://www.ridgewoodnj.net/news/1836-2018-ridgewood-paving-list

Utility to replace additional 875 miles of cast iron and unprotected steel gas pipes over five years
April 25,2021

Ridgewood NJ, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) today announced a $1.875 billion settlement with the Staff of the New Jersey Board of Public utilities (BPU), the New Jersey Division of Rate Counsel and other parties to continue the accelerated replacement of aging gas pipes, supporting a safe, clean and reliable gas system well into the future. The settlement agreement is pending approval by the BPU.
In a filing with the BPU in July 2017, PSE&G sought approval to continue to accelerate the replacement of the cast iron and unprotected steel gas mains line throughout its service territory. The settlement will enable the utility to replace 875 miles of gas mains and make other improvements to its gas system over the five-year period.
“By year end, we expect to have replaced hundreds of miles of aging gas pipes under the first phase of our Gas System Modernization Program,” said David Daly, PSE&G president and COO. “This agreement means we can continue the next phase of this important work, which will result in improved safety and reliability of gas service and reduced methane emissions. It will also ensure we have the critical infrastructure needed to grow New Jersey’s economy for years to come.
“Together with our contractors, we have demonstrated we can manage a larger-scale, longer-duration program safely and cost-effectively,” Daly added. “We thank all of the parties involved for their thoughtful participation and review in this matter.”
In addition to PSE&G, the BPU staff and NJ Rate Counsel, parties supporting the settlement include: the Environmental Defense Fund, Local Union 94 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 855 of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, the Engineers Labor-Employment Cooperative, New Jersey Laborers – Employers Cooperation and Education Trust, Ferreira Construction, and Creamer-Sanzari Joint Venture.
In 2017, the BPU approved new rules that support longer-term infrastructure programs of up to five years. This agreement culminates nearly nine months of formal discovery, review and discussions, including public hearings before the BPU.
The mains and service lines will be replaced with strong, durable plastic piping, which is much less likely to have leaks and release methane gas. The new elevated pressure systems also enable the installation of excess flow valves that automatically shut off gas flow if a service line is damaged, and better support the use of high-efficiency appliances. The five-year program is also expected to create about 3,200 sustained jobs.
Since 2009, residential gas heating bills are down about 50 percent because of the lower cost of natural gas supply. Continued low gas prices make this the ideal time to accelerate this work.
Under the settlement, PSE&G’s return on equity on the investment will be determined as part of the utility’s base distribution rate review currently under way. The average annual bill impact for a typical residential customer is expected to be less than a 2 percent increase, or about $17, per year over the five-year program.
PSE&G has just under 4,000 miles of cast-iron gas pipes, which is more than any other utility in the nation. At this new pace, the utility lines can replace its cast-iron and unprotected steel pipes with modern ones in 25 years. Pipes installed before 1960 are the most leak-prone. They make up 25 percent of PSE&G’s network, yet account for 65 percent of leaks, excluding third-party damages. The five-year pipe replacement program would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 30,000 vehicles off the road.

Ridgewood NJ, according to councilmen Ramon Hache, the Village is continuing the improvements to our roads in 2018. The Village Council recently funded $2,489,852 for paving and resurfacing. Harsh winters and infrastructure work by PSE&G have wreaked havoc on our roads.
Many residents have expressed concerns over the conditions of many of our roads. It is important to note that not all of the roads in town belong to the Village. Many roads belong to the county and the cost and responsibility of paving those roads falls on the county. Despite being a quaint town, Ridgewood has more county roads running through it than any other town in Bergen County, with a total of 15. Hackensack comes in second with only 11. Some of the roads with the worst conditions are county roads. For example, Franklin Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue from Paramus Road to Maple Avenue (only the portion between Maple and Broad belongs to the Village). Here is a complete list of the county roads that run through Ridgewood:
Ackerman Ave
E Ridgewood Ave
E Saddle River Rd
Franklin Ave
Franklin Tpke
Glen Ave
Godwin Ave
Goffle Rd
Lake St
Lincoln Ave
Linwood Ave
Maple Ave
Prospect St
Racetrack Rd
Van Emburgh Ave
The county is working on their $13 million paving and resurfacing program. Their work in our area will begin with E Ridgewood Avenue from Rt 17 to Maple Avenue. In the meantime, we are pleased to announce our 2018 Ridgewood Paving List:

Ridgewood NJ, Lawmakers representing New Jersey’s 40th legislative district announced nearly $4.5 million to fund 15 transportation projects in each of the towns they represent.
$4.5 million in TTF funding will support 15 road and bridge projects (SenateNJ.com)“Our local municipalities will receive over $4 million from the TTF to improve critical road and bridge projects,” said Sen. Kristin Corrado (R-40). “Funding for safe and reliable transportation will be an investment in our economy.”
Bergen County will receive more than $1.3 million to fund seven projects, including improvements to the West Allendale Avenue Streetscape in downtown Allendale Borough and roads near schools and parks in Franklin Lakes and Ho-Ho-Kus.
Passaic County will receive $2,185,000 for five projects, including Webster Drive in Wayne Township.
Two projects in Morris County will be funded with more than $547,000, including improvements to Hillview Road in Pequannock Township, a commercial area. A $402,000 grant was awarded to Essex County for Cedar Grove Township.
“This is welcome news for our region,” said Rooney (R-Bergen). “Fixing roads in residential neighborhoods makes them safer for commuters and families while protecting the value of homes in the area. Road improvements also enhance safety for children who walk to school and enjoy our parks.”
“Commuters, businesses, and families will all reap the benefits of this funding,” said DePhillips (R-Bergen). “Well paved and maintained streets are vital to our local economy. This investment in our infrastructure will pay dividends for years to come.”

Ridgewood NJ, Street Paving has been another major point of contention the last couple of years ,especially with PSE&G and Ridgewood Water digging up the streets working on infrastructure improvements .
According to Councilmen Ramon Hache , last year the Village spent $2 million on paving roads.
Improvements the roads will continue from 2017. The Village council recently appropriated $2.16 million for the 2018 road paving program which will begin this spring. Bergen County has appropriated $13 million for road paving this year. We will be working with the County to ensure they repair the County roads in Ridgewood which are clearly the worst in the entire Village.

Dave Daly – President and COO, PSE&G
Providing safe, reliable gas service to roughly 1.8 million customers across New Jersey is a big responsibility, and one we take very seriously at PSE&G. That’s why we have undertaken a multi-year program to update older portions of our network of 34,500 miles of underground pipes – enough to circle the earth and then some. About 4,000 miles of that network consist of century-old cast-iron and unprotected steel pipe that is showing its age. Although our service reliability continues to be excellent, we’re not waiting for problems to find us.
For the past two years, dedicated teams of PSE&G employees and contractors have been hard at work replacing hundreds of miles of pipes and service lines across the system as part of our Gas System Modernization Program (GSMP).
The investments we have made through GSMP have accelerated the modernization of our gas infrastructure that will allow us to continue to provide safe, reliable service well into the future. To date, we have replaced 312 miles of vintage or high-risk pipe and we’re on track to successfully replace a total of as much as 510 miles of pipe by the end of the program in December 2018. And I’m proud to say, our highly skilled workforce and experienced contractors have safely completed these upgrades with minimal disruption and inconvenience to our local communities.
But as this program moves toward completion, there is still much work to be done. We need to build on the momentum of GSMP and continue to advance the modernization of our gas system. And now is the perfect time to do this critical work. The price of natural gas is still hovering at historically low levels, with bills about 32 percent lower than they were eight years ago. PSE&G is also passing along savings as a result of lower federal taxes. The bottom line is that we can make these investments while still keeping customer bills affordable.
In July 2017, we filed a petition with the Board of Public Utilities to extend and accelerate our modernization efforts through GSMP II. If approved, this next phase of the program – which would be carried out over five years – would replace more than 1,000 additional miles of main, in addition to other necessary upgrades across the system.
GSMP II is a proactive and ambitious program. By choreographing critical upgrades during an intensive five-year period, we can work more efficiently than we could with piecemeal projects. In short, we can do more for less cost in a shorter amount of time.
There are added benefits to GSMP II. Replacing old pipe will reduce leaks, which not only makes the system safer, but reduces greenhouse gas emissions. And the work we will undertake will provide hundreds of sustained, full-time jobs and other economic benefits. Most importantly, GSMP II will continue the safe, reliable service our customers can depend on for decades to come. It’s a win-win-win.Throughout our 115-year history, we’ve always had an eye on the future, striving to stay ahead of service threats and resolve issues before they become serious problems. The investments in GSMP II are a natural progression of that legacy and will ensure we can fulfill the commitment to the people of New Jersey that we hold so deeply.
