Ridgewood NJ, Gen Sushi & Hibachi, formerly located at 15 East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, closed its doors permanently within the last few weeks. Anyone know why? It seems it closed within the past 30 days after 10 years of operation.
They were closed last weekend during the tree lighting , some speculate over the Thanksgiving weekend .
Ridgewood NJ, As previously reported by the staff of The Ridgewood Blog ; Earlier this year, the Village’s CFO, Robert G. Rooney, became aware that a portion of the Village’s Parking Utility revenues associated with use of the Parkmobile smart phone application at Village owned and operated parking facilities (said to be 21 cents of every 1 dollar), were being withheld from the Village by Parkmobile USA, Inc.
Upon further investigation, Mr. Rooney determined that a 2-year contract, with an option for a 2 year renewal, signed by former Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld entitled Parkmobile USA, Inc. to retain this revenue. The total amount of Parking Utility revenue withheld from the Village by Parkmobile USA, Inc. since the contract’s inception is reported to be over $200K.
Following discussions with Mr. Rooney and Village Manager Heather Mailander, Ridgewood Mayor Susan Knudsen requested a review of all Village Council meeting minutes and Village Council approved Resolutions associated with discussions and approval of the Village’s relationship with Parkmobile USA, Inc.
During the aforementioned review process, it was determined that at no time had a public discussion taken place concerning any monetary obligations on the Village’s part in connection with integration of Parkmobile USA, Inc.’s smart phone application into the Village’s Parking Utility system.
Furthermore, Resolution #15-52, approved unanimously by Village Council members on February 11, 2015 specifically states: “. . . there is no additional service or contract fee for the Village of Ridgewood; and WHEREAS, Parkmobile USA , Inc. will provide this service at no cost to the Village of Ridgewood, and shall not charge the Village of Ridgewood any costs for the integration of its system(s) or for the management of the project and services;.”
At a public meeting of the Village Council held on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, Village Council members directed Village Manager Heather Mailander to formally notify Parkmobile USA, Inc. that the Village would not be renewing its contract with them.
The staff of The Ridgewood Blog will keep you informed of any further developments in this matter as related information is made public.
Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood resident Saurabh Dani challenged the bidding process “Display Advertising at the Train Station” . On Facebook Dani said , “Our village is going to sign a contract next week for 5 years (FIVE YEARS) for “Display Advertising at the Train Station” – where there was ONLY ONE BIDDER for our bid notice – and the revenue is divided at 60-40 with NO MINIMUM commitment / no retainer / no control by the village on the advertising rates. Is that how this industry works? i.e. 5 year long contracts, no minimum retainers? We have a chronic problem of ONLY ONE BIDDER for most of our bids – don’t know why no one wants to do business with our village except the repeat vendors, but still – 5 years contract based on ONE bid response?”
Ridgewood NJ, Village of Ridgewood Councilmen Ramon M Hache thanked the Central Business District Advisory Committee and Ridgewood Signal Department for the new additions to downtown , “Thank you Central Business District Advisory Committee for the snowflakes and continuing the beautification of our Downtown. Also a big thank you to our Ridgewood Signal Department and to Gary Cirillo at Gary’s Village Landscaping. Truly a team effort.”
Speaking of nonsense, isn’t about time the village fixes the leaf collection problem….? I drove to the Y tonight and it was laughable trying to sneak around piles before the driver on the other side of the road tried to take the middle of the road before me. Maybe I don’t know my ass from my elbow but why can’t we buy 2 of those leaf trucks with the vacuum hoses attached to the back and suck the leaves up all day long ? There has to be a better way….
…..We have met the enemy to the village pocketbooks and he is US. In summary ,a village still out of control on spending and fees/taxation and rule harassment..leaves are a complete Joke in Somerville Walthery zone. But two weeks back ticket hacks out 2weeks ahead of the planned SCHEDULED missing VOR leaf lifters..they can be late ,but we can’t lay a leaf in the street..Tyranny…
So if Vagianos and other CBD stakeholders wont invest in solving their own problem, the notion of funding a garage becomes a non-starter. Clearly parking garage is not all that urgent unless it is to support an application for unrelated high density housing
Ridgewood NJ, Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino and the Division of Consumer Affairs today announced that the state Board of Medical Examiners (“the Board”) has permanently revoked the license of a Bergen County psychiatrist who was convicted of illegally distributing the prescription drug Adderall.
Dr. James Cowan, Jr., who practiced from a home office in Ridgewood, agreed to forfeit his license to practice medicine in a Consent Order signed immediately after he pleaded guilty in Bergen County Superior Court last week.
Cowan’s criminal conviction comes a year and a half after his medical license was temporarily suspended by the Board amid allegations he indiscriminately prescribed Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) to patients; failed to keep proper patient records; and aided and abetted the unlicensed practice of medicine by allowing his wife to use his pre-signed prescription blanks to dispense drugs like Adderall and Xanax to his patients. Cowan has been barred from practicing since agreeing to the temporary suspension in June 2016.
“Instead of doing his part to help fight the scourge of addiction, Dr. Cowan exacerbated the problem by dispensing habit-forming drugs to patients without justification,” said Attorney General Porrino. “There is absolutely no place in the medical profession for doctors who abuse their prescription writing privileges to traffic in the illegal sale of highly restricted drugs.”
Adderall is an amphetamine used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Narcolepsy.
“Dr. Cowan’s egregious behavior breached the most fundamental standards of his profession and proved him unfit to practice,” said Sharon Joyce, Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Protection. “By permanently revoking his medical license, the Board of Medical Examiners has ensured that Dr. Cowan will no longer pose a risk to his patients or the public at large.”
In May 2016, the state filed allegations that Cowan allowed his wife, a clinical social worker, to continue running his medical practice when he became too ill to work. While confined to a hospital, and then a nursing home, the 72-year-old Cowan allegedly pre-signed prescription blanks for his wife to dispense highly addicting drugs to his patients, many of whom exhibited signs of drug seeking behavior. Cowan’s wife, who was also prosecuted for her misconduct, has since died.
According to the State’s allegations, Cowan’s office manager told investigators that Cowan’s patients exhibited drug seeking behaviors and were often aggressive. Patients wandered into the upstairs private bedroom area to find Cowan, instead of waiting in the basement office area to be seen, and Cowan routinely left prescriptions for patients in an outside mailbox for after-hour pickups, according to the office manager.
Cowan agreed to the temporary suspension of his license pending further action by the Board. Under the terms of the Consent Order, Cowan was required to surrender all prescription pads, and any CDS in his possession, except for those lawfully prescribed for his own use.
On March 1, 2017, Cowan was arrested in Bergen County on charges related to the distribution of CDS.
The charges stemmed from an investigation that began in February 2016 when detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, in an undercover capacity, visited Cowan’s office, posing as new patients. During these office visits, the undercover officers received prescriptions for medications from Cowan in exchange for cash payments. The undercover detectives were not physically evaluated by Cowan or anyone else at his office, but instead were issued prescriptions for Xanax and Adderall.
On November 30, Cowan pleaded guilty to one count of knowingly or purposely distributing a controlled dangerous substance, namely Adderall; a third degree crime.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Cowan was required to permanently forfeit his license to practice medicine. The state will recommend that Cowan be sentenced to non-custodial probation for a term to be determined by a judge when Cowan is sentenced on January 12, 2018.

Ridgewood NJ, the Village Mangers office confirmed that “ZERO” business opted in the Central Valet Parking program . That means that there are not any business in the Central Business District willing to Validate parking . Apparently we have all been misinformed about the parking problem .
Reader says …And if this wasn’t a big enough kick in the ass to Ridgewood’s taxpayers, Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce President Paul Vagianos had the nerve to stand in front of Council members last night and publicly bitch about the taxpayer funded Central Valet Parking Program. Mr. Vagianos expressed his personal disappointment over the single site chosen as a drop off/pick up location (Van Neste Square), saying it “lacked visibility.” In Mr. Vagianos’ opinion, a better location for single site operation would have been the western end of East Ridgewood Avenue (adjacent to the train tracks).
What Mr. Vagianos didn’t say last night was that both his restaurant and a commercial rental property he owns are closer to the western end of East Ridgewood Avenue. He also failed to mention that his restaurant does not currently participate in the reimbursement program associated with the Central Valet Parking Program.
The contract was signed by former (thanks be to God) Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld.
Is a single village able to sign off and approve a contract with this value by themselves ? No other approvals required?!! WTH?! Also who is performing internal control audits on this type of stuff? What is the market commission rate for this type of app at the time?!! Everyone but RIdgewood’s had them for years correct? Who submitted the pro-con analysis and comparirison of competitors and what did it say?
teach a man to fish free..( other people’s quarters ) and both of them (the Teacher and Student ) will learn to pick your pockets forever….Sad & quite maddening ..there was focus on this earlier major crime against the taxpayers as well…
Modern version of the quarter theft. Don’t just blame one “undisclosed” person. Many others had to notice the exorbitant amount being paid vs. revenue. Simple math.
Last I heard, we’d paid ParkMobile USA about $200k during the most recent 12 month period. That equates to $1 million of ParkMobile USA transactions in the Village during that 12 month period. Makes you realize how much of a cash cow the Village’s parking utility is. $1 million alone in app transactions. How much cash did we bring in from the meters and placard sales? I’ll bet the total parking utility revenue is close to $4 million. Now you know why the powers that be don’t want to take away the meters. Mo money, Mo money!
