Ridgewood NJ, Remember to remove all ice and snow from your vehicle before driving, especially from the hood, windows and roof. It’s the law in New Jersey! Motorists who fail to do so face fines of $25 to $75 for each offense, regardless of whether the ice and snow is dislodged from the vehicle. If flying ice or snow causes property damage or injury to others, motorists face fines of $200 to $1,000 for each offense. There are approximately 500 fatalities in the United States per year due to icy road conditions.
Winter Driving Tips
Drive slow (at or below the posted speed limit) and adjust your speed for the changing road conditions.
Turn on your headlights, using low beams when traveling in snow.
Increase your following distance. In winter weather, travel at least eight to 10 seconds behind the car in front of you.
Give snowplows plenty of room to work. Don’t tailgate and try not to pass. If you must pass, take extreme caution in doing so. Remember, a snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see him, but they don’t always see you.
If you skid, don’t brake or accelerate. Remove your foot from the gas, and gently steer your car in the direction of the skid (the direction the rear of your vehicle is sliding.) When your car starts heading in the desired direction, carefully straighten the wheel.
Slow down before exiting the highway. Exit ramps often have icy patches, sharp curves and stalled or stopped vehicles.
Have a personal safety kit easily accessible in your vehicle that includes: an ice scraper/brush; shovel; jumper cables or battery starter; blanket; sand, salt or kitty litter for traction; lock de-icer; flashlight and new batteries; extra windshield wiper fluid; safety flares/warning device; cell phone with spare battery; water and non-perishable food (i.e., granola or protein bars); and paper towels or a cloth.
If your vehicle does become disabled, pull off the road as far as possible and turn on your emergency flashers. Remain with your vehicle until help arrives. If you can’t get your vehicle off the road and are uncertain about your safety, do not stay in your vehicle or stand behind it. Proceed carefully to a safe location away from traffic.

Ridgewood NJ, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey’s largest electric and gas utility, is preparing for the wintry weather forecasted to arrive Wednesday night into Thursday.
“Based on the forecast, we will quickly go from record warmth on Wednesday to six to eight inches of heavy, wet snow that can weigh down trees and bring down power lines,” said John Latka, senior vice president of electric and gas operations for PSE&G. “We have additional personnel scheduled and on standby, with extra tree crews and equipment at the ready. We’re prepared for whatever the storm brings our way.”
In advance of the storm, PSE&G advises customers to prepare an emergency kit that includes:
• Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days
• Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Manual can opener for food
• Cell phone with chargers
PSE&G urges its customers to be cautious during and after the storm:
• To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run any gasoline powered engine, including generators and snowblowers, in a garage or any other enclosed space.
• Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with.
To report downed wires or power outages, call PSE&G’s Customer Service line at 1-800-436-PSEG. Also, customers can report outages by logging into their PSE&G account online or by texting “OUT” to 4PSEG (47734). The utility’s mobile-friendly website includes an “Outage Map” that is updated every 15 minutes and displays the location and status of power outages in PSE&G’s service area.

Ridgewood NJ, Yes, town workers did a pretty decent job in town.As usual, the business district always gets taken care of.
What about the park and ride on route 17?? again this year, the Ridgewood Park And Ride was mostly neglected. The main section was o.k. for those using the meters. The section for the yearly commuters is a disaster. Only 20% done. Maybe the town prefers clearing the meter area only.
The section for the commuters with a yearly pass, was horrible this morning at 7:30 AM, maybe 20% done.
Worse yet Shortline resumed bus service first thing Sunday morning .
So, town is certainly making sure we can put money in the meters.Last year, same situation but much worse.
Our town manager made a comment last year after I complained, she would get in plowed by the following day and actually was.
So why wasn’t the whole lot plowed??
Ridgewood NJ, Village crews were worked through the night and will continue to work all through today to remove snow from the streets.
According to Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld the Village moved 250 truckloads of snow from the Central Business District to the Graydon Pool parking lot. Yesterday snow piles are particularly large and high on Dayton street and the Village started the removal operation section by section, so as each section is completed parking will be available.
Roberta when on to remind residents that ,” As has been the case in other large snowfalls, the meters are inaccessible and the mounds of snow against the curbs make it almost impossible in non-angled parking spots to get out on the passenger side of the car. So please use caution. The removal of snow from the curb area around the meters is the responsibility of individual business owners. It’s a lot of snow and we clearly do not want this snow thrown into the street today, so we will be working with the businesses community tomorrow to address this issue.”
According to Village Hall the top priority Sunday was to make the school routes safe and particularly to remove any visibility problems around the corners. While the main streets seem in good shape and that the secondaries are in decent shape. The Village asks In the event that they missed and area or a street needs more work , please email Linda Salvi at lsalvi@ridgewoodnj.net with your street information.
Sanitation and recycling are on schedule, and all sanitation must be brought to the curb. Please help any neighbors that may need help in this regard.
Nancy Greene, the Director of the Library got the Ridgewood library open at 1:00 yesterday. There are concerns about icing in the parking lot as well as some of the paths so please check the library website for more information at www.ridgewoodlibrary.org.

Ridgewood NJ , braving the snow and the cold, some residents took a walk yesterday during the snow storm. Our ace photographer Boyd Loving hit the town to capture some idyllic snow scenes in the Central Business District in Ridgewood .
How much snow residents report anywhere from 11 to 24 inches. The Village posted 20-28 inches forecasted .
Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said in a Facebook post , ” We have plowed the mains at least twice. We have about 40 trucks out on the roads working, So far we are keeping up with the snow which is now estimated at 15 inches into the evening…..where we need help is for residents to not park their cars on the streets – it really hampers the clean up effort and unfortunately we have hit this situation too many times since we started early this a.m. We just sent a Nixle message out and we will communicate as things change or progress. We would love for more people to sign up for theses as well as e-notices…..stay safe, Roberta”
And now weather advisory would be complete with out a ROBO call from the Mayor : 11:15 – MSG from the Mayor: (Reverse Call)
Good morning. This is Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn, and I’m calling to give you a quick update on the winter storm.
The Governor has declared a State of Emergency … and the National Weather Service has increased projected total snow accumulation in our area to 10″-15″. This includes heavy bands of snow.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect, which means that the roads are dangerous … the winds are strong … and you are urged to stay off the roads and stay at home.
Village crews and contractors have been out in full force with about 40 vehicles on the road.
On-street parking throughout the Village is prohibited until the streets are cleared or until further notice. This is very important. To effectively plow the roads, we need all cars off the streets.
Please check the Village website for storm-related updates … and please sign up for email notifications. And to the extent possible and necessary, please check on your neighbors.
Thank you and be safe.
Paul S. Aronsohn, Mayor
Village of Ridgewood

NWS has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area from 6AM Sat. through 1pm Sun. 5-9″ of snow is expected along with high winds.
Parking is prohibited on all Village of Ridgewood streets from midnight Friday through 12 noonon Sunday.
Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Stay away from downed trees and power lines. Keep fire hydrants and intersections clear of snow and debris.
Residents should only call 911 for life threatening emergencies.
We, at Village Hall, have been closely monitoring the weather forecasts over the last several days. While not definitive as yet, there does appear to be a growing consensus that we will experience a significant snow event from Saturday morning into Sundaymorning with accumulations between 4-8 inches. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch.
It’s been a while since our last snow event, so I wanted to take this opportunity to not just assure you that we are on top of this, but also to provide some information that will help us work together to safely handle this event.
First of all, safety of our residents is the primary concern – so please stay off of the roads and drive only if absolutely necessary; this storm may not just be a snow event – there is a likelihood of high winds so blowing and drifting snow may be an issue.
To stay informed, please check our Village website (www.ridgewoodnj.net), our information phone number 201-444-1776, Channels 34 or 77…….. and if you are not already signed up for Emergency Notifications please do so on our website.
Residents should call 911 only for life threatening emergencies. Please call our Police Line (201-652-3900) to report downed power lines, trees, etc. Please call PSE&G directly(800-436-7734) to report loss of power.
Please keep fire hydrants free of debris and do not deposit snow into the streets. Additionally, vehicles should not be parked on the streets as it affects our ability to clear the street of snow. As a reminder, snow must be cleared off of the sidewalks within 24 hours of the storm’s end.
We are starting our brining operation (liquid solution of water and salt) today and will work through tomorrow to coat all of our streets. Depending upon the amount and texture of the snow as well as the temperature, brining can be an effective snow accumulation deterrent that also can reduce the amount of salt we apply and the amount of plowing we need to do.
Please be reminded that our snow removal is prioritized according to emergency routes, main roads, hills and Central Business District. After these areas are cleared, plowing begins on secondary roads. Please use caution when approaching Village vehicles that are salting and plowing.
Thanks to everyone for their cooperation and stay safe,
Roberta Sonenfeld
