HACKENSACK — Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco presented his budget to the freeholders Thursday afternoon, showing that a combination of mandated expenses and debt coming due would mean a $17 million increase to the tax levy.

For the owner of the average home in the county, assessed at $324,000, that translates to a property tax increase of $12.73.

Tedesco illustrated that figure as the cost of two foam-topped Starbuck’s specialty coffee drinks with extra expresso shots and caramel — drinks that he placed on the freeholders’ round table.

Under Tedesco’s $531 million spending plan, the total $387 million tax levy would mean the county portion of the tax bill on an average home would be $762.28, up 1.7 percent from 2014.

Chris Christie should retire that retirement plan; it equals the biggest tax hike ever | Mulshine

That’s not because Amanda Lott is a retiree. It’s because she’s a financial planner. If this plan goes through, financial planners will make a fortune trying to rescue future retirees from its effects.

“The proposed benefit reform could remove more than 20 percent of the retirement income from an American couple,” the email read. It went on to point out how the Christie plan could cause even more retirees to flee New Jersey than are currently leaving.

I decided to give Lott a call at her office in Morristown to learn more about the problems with the plan.

“This punishes people who have been fiscally responsible and have saved all of their lives,” Lott said. “But people who haven’t planned ahead will be rewarded.”

The problem is the “means testing” that is the basis of the plan. Means testing is usually something pushed by Democrats for the obvious reason that it takes from the rich and gives to the poor.

Obamacare’s $800 Billion Tax Hike Explained in One Chart

403obamacare

Alex Rendon / April 06, 2015

April 15 is right around the corner, and millions of Americans will find themselves paying more in taxes than ever thanks to Obamacare.

The law is more than a fundamental change to the country’s health care system. It also is a massive tax hike. As The Heritage Foundation’s Federal Budget in Pictures shows, according to the most recent scores, Obamacare will increase taxes by nearly $800 billion for the period of 2013-2022.

Obamacare contains 18 separate tax increases. A few of the biggest include a tax on “Cadillac” health insurance plans, which doesn’t take effect until 2018, long after President Obama and many in Congress who voted for the tax in 2010 have departed Washington. Also, there is a tax on health insurance premiums and a higher rate on the Hospital Insurance payroll tax for single filers with incomes above $200,000 ($250,000 for married filers) that also applies to investment income.

Ever feel like the only difference between the New York Times and Washington Post is the name? We do.

At a time when the already-onerous tax code has created a significant drag on the economy, Obamacare’s tax hikes only do more damage. Many Americans have found themselves afflicted by higher health insurance premiums, driven up, in part, by new taxes on insurers. Increased rates on capital gains and dividends from the wage and investment tax hike discourage saving and investment, resulting in fewer jobs created and lower wage growth.

Because of Obamacare, Americans are paying much higher taxes and those taxes are hurting the economy. Though some bipartisan efforts exist to repeal some of the new taxes that benefit special-interest groups, including the medical device tax, an incomplete approach won’t be sufficient to overcome the detrimental effects of this law.

Congress should repeal Obamacare and all of its tax increases.

LITTLE FALLS – In a gesture of solidarity with frustrated taxpayers, Mayor Darlene Post and the Township Council are forgoing their $2,000-a-year salaries in a lean 2014 budget that all but cuts essential government services.

The $15.7 million budget, introduced by the council Monday night, calls for a $97 property tax increase for the owner of home valued at the township average of $302,000. It scales back new initiatives, reins in legal expenses, and for the second year in a row withholds raises for non-contractual employees.

The flood-prone township’s finances are so tight, officials say, that it can’t afford a new truck for the public works superintendent so his old one can be passed on to the emergency management coordinator for use in extreme weather. The coordinator has no vehicle.

“There were cuts made and there were requests that weren’t made so we could keep [taxes] flat,” Post said. She said under the circumstances, the budget is “as good as it gets, as bitter as it is.”

Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan will propose a $511 million budget this week that calls for a nearly 2 percent increase in the amount to be raised by county taxes.

That will mean a tax increase of $6.49 this year for the owner of a home assessed at the county average of $324,200.

“I have kept my promise to keep it under the rate of inflation for four years,” Donovan said last week while previewing the budget proposal before The Record’s editorial board.

Donovan will present the budget Wednesday to the freeholders, who have the final say on the spending plan.
