“Bogus” bills being sent by The Valley Hospital?

"Bogus" bills , The Valley Hospital

December 28,2016
Boyd A. Loving

Ridgewood NJ, If you receive a bill for services provided by The Valley Hospital, DO NOT PAY THE BILL without thoroughly checking its validity.

I received a $5,900 bill for services rendered at The Luckow Pavilion only to find out that an employee of The Valley’s accounting department failed to provide the correct authorization code to my health care insurance provider. It took three (3) in-person visits to The Valley’s offices in Paramus over a four (4) month period before I was able to straighten the matter out.

My attempts to quickly resolve the issue were stymied when a representative from the accounting department told me that I was “personally responsible” for contacting a supervisor at The Luckow Pavilion to gather information. Seems as though the accounting department will not initiate communication with other hospital departments by phone or e-mail. And, when a supervisor from Luckow did write to accounting, the e-mail was not opened for 30 days – it was opened only after the accounting department’s director was called by phone.

In retrospect, I’m now left wondering if all of this was a disguised attempt on the part of someone at The Valley to extract $5,900 from me instead of accepting the $4,800 agreed upon payment from my insurance company. I’m also wondering how many people just wind up paying these “bogus” bills instead of putting up with the hassle involved in challenging them.

What a way (not) to run a business.

Ridgewood NJ, The Valley Hospital is proud to have been recognized with an “A” grade in patient safety for the ninth time.  Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which rate how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital, were announced today by The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. Valley was one of 844 hospitals to receive an “A”, ranking it among the safest hospitals in the United States.

“We are pleased and proud to once again receive an ‘A’ for patient safety,” said Audrey Meyers, President and CEO of The Valley Hospital and Valley Health System. “This top grade is a reflection and a result of our longstanding focus on and commitment to patient safety and quality care.”

“Protecting patients from harm is the most important charge for any hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We recognize and appreciate ‘A’ hospitals’ vigilance and continued dedication to keeping their patients safe.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

To see Valley’s full grade, and to access consumer-friendly patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit www.hospitalsafetygrade.org or follow The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade on Twitter or Facebook. This evidence-based designation is the only award that identifies the country’s best breast centers based on robust criteria that considers female patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

To earn this recognition, The Valley Hospital Breast Center, along with 450 other award winners throughout the nation, had to meet the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) standards from the American College of Surgeons and carry the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) seal from the American College of Radiology.  The Valley Hospital Breast Center also had to receive a rating in the top 75% for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) patient recommendation measures.

“We are proud to be recognized as one of the nation’s best hospitals for breast care,” said Audrey Meyers, President and CEO of The Valley Hospital and Valley Health System.  “It’s a testament to the priority our Breast Center physicians, nurses and staff place on making sure every patient’s needs are met when it comes to breast care.”

“Whether it’s an annual mammogram or addressing a more serious concern, every woman deserves the best breast care and an opportunity to live a healthy life. By letting women know which breast centers in their area are among America’s best, we are able to reduce their risk by helping them make smarter healthcare choices,” says Delia Passi, CEO and Founder of the Women’s Choice Award.

Valley’s cancer program holds the distinction of being the only one in New Jersey, and 1 of 7 in the country, to receive this accreditation.

APEx is an independent radiation oncology practice accreditation program based on 16 evidence-based standards of radiation oncology practice. These 16 standards are focused on five pillars of patient care: the process of care; the radiation oncology team; safety; quality management; and patient-centered care.

Accreditation through APEx is a rigorous, voluntary, multi-step process that can take up to one year to complete. To receive accreditation, Valley’s policies and procedures were reviewed using objective, verifiable expectations for performance in radiation oncology. Valley also demonstrated its commitment to high standards of safety, quality and patient-centered care through effective communication, coordinated treatment and engaging patients and their families as partners in care.

“We are pleased to receive APEx accreditation from ASTRO, the premier radiation oncology society in the world,” said Chad DeYoung, M.D., Co-Director of Radiation Oncology at Valley. “Evaluating our processes in relation to ASTRO’s high standards, including standards for safety and quality, validates our practices and recognizes the efforts of our radiation oncology team to deliver patient-centered radiation oncology care.”

“ASTRO is proud to recognize Valley for achieving APEx accreditation,” said ASTRO chair Bruce D. Minsky, M.D., FASTRO. “Valley has demonstrated a commitment to providing their patients with safe, high-quality radiation therapy services.”
