Ridgewood NJ, Monday A customer of the Starbucks located at 363 Route 17, Ridgewood departed without his laptop computer bag, which resulted in a temporary evacuation of the facility and a response by Ridgewood PD & FD units on Monday, 09/26 when a passing police supervisor noticed the unattended package. However, prior to the arrival of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad unit, the customer returned for his property. An all clear was given after the bag was inspected; police subsequently reopened the parking lot and allowed employees to return inside the establishment.

Study finds improved self-regulation in kindergartners who wait a year to enroll
October 7, 2015
By May Wong

The new Stanford study found improved self-regulation in children who delayed kindergarten by a year.

A new research paper co-authored by Professor Thomas Dee finds strong evidence of mental health benefits in delaying kindergarten.

A new study on the mental health effects of kindergarten enrollment ages found strong evidence that a one-year delay dramatically improves a child’s self-regulation abilities even into later childhood.

According to the study co-authored by Stanford Graduate School of Education Professor Thomas Dee, children who started kindergarten a year later showed significantly lower levels of inattention and hyperactivity, which are jointly considered a key indicator of self regulation. The beneficial result was found to persist even at age 11.

“We found that delaying kindergarten for one year reduced inattention and hyperactivity by 73 percent for an average child at age 11,” Dee said, “and it virtually eliminated the probability that an average child at that age would have an ‘abnormal,’ or higher-than-normal rating for the inattentive-hyperactive behavioral measure.”

Findings from the study, which Dee co-authored with Hans Henrik Sievertsen of the Danish National Centre for Social Research, could help parents in the recurring debate over the pros and cons of a later school entry.

Though many children in developed countries now start their formal schooling at an older age, a growing body of empirical studies could neither conclusively point to improved test scores nor higher incomes from a delayed kindergarten entry, the study stated.

Dee and Sievertsen’s research, however, provides new evidence instead on mental health aspects that are predictors of educational outcomes.

In the psychology realm, the measure of inattention and hyperactivity – the mental health traits behind Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – effectively reflects the concept of self regulation. A higher level of self regulation, which describes a person’s ability to control impulses and modulate behavior in attaining goals, is commonly linked to student achievement.

Ridgewood NJ, The RHS band got off to a great start for the season with a very impressive showing  at the
Northern Valley Old Tappan Invitational. Taking First Place over all, Best Color,Best Music,Best Overall Effect,
Best Visual,Best Percussion and an overall Score 80.050.

The Ridgewood High School Band Program is renowned as one of New Jersey’s top comprehensive music programs, and is Bergen County’s largest band program with over 200 students involved each year. The Impressive array of curricular and co-curricular ensembles is organized in a logical sequence of instruction, which helps each student develop his or her talent and ability while maintaining the highest standards of performance. Each of our performing ensembles and related groups has received superior ratings at festivals and competitions around the country in all areas of band performance, from concert band to jazz ensemble, and chamber music to marching band. Our reputation for quality music performances is second only to the reputation we enjoy for the outstanding quality of young adults who pass through our ensembles.

The band program enjoys a history nearly a century old. During the past decade, Ridgewood High School band students have performed in major venues ranging from Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, one of the worlds most prestigious concert halls, to the famed Jack Morton Auditorium in Washington DC and New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Our groups have appeared at colleges and universities including Harvard University, George Mason University, and the University of Southern California, and have worked with some of the music world’s greatest composers, conductors, and solo performers.

The Band Program is just one facet of the award winning music department at Ridgewood High School, which has been named a Grammy Arts School in 1998-1999 and again in 2003-2004. The Band Program is particularly proud to have played an important role in the Nation Association of Music Merchants decision to name Ridgewood one of the “Best communities for Music Education in America.” Other awards have included NJAJE Finalist status for both jazz ensembles, more than a dozen appearances at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Young Musicians Concert, and a return for the Marching Band to the top five at the USBands National Championships at MetLife Stadium. Individually, members of the Ridgewood High School Bands are chosen annually to perform in honors ensembles at the county, regional, and state level.

Reader says Ridgewood Planning Board lawsuit indicates that Pucciarelli should have recused earlier

Ridgewood 3 amigos

Well this is off subject but I do not know where else to post it. The Ridgewood News today has a great article about the high density housing fight. A lawsuit indicates that Pucciarelli should have recused way earlier than he did. When asked by the reporter to comment Mr. Pucciarelli declined. Love it. Mr. Big talker who could not shut up ever when he was on the dais now has his mouth shut. Have a crappy weekend Big Al the Developers Pal.

Reader says For some, free speech is only good when they agree with it…

500px-MPFS_dueling_01

For some, free speech is only good when they agree with it… otherwise it should be deleted.
.
Its one thing to oppose speech with other speech. This is the essence of free speech – an exchange of ideas and opinions – even those you find offensive. Freedom is inherently messy. Authoritarianism is inherently neat, but also repressive.
.
Freedom also means including everyone – another basic tenant – even those who are “below the standard”. Some might say that the definition of freedom (speech or otherwise) IS the inclusion of those who are “below the standard”. Let’s not forget that in a free society, “the standard” is a naturally occurring measure which is based on ALL participants. In a repressive society, the standard is arbitrarily set.

Reader says the Ridgewood Public Library has no business getting involved in a performing arts center

Bike_Ridgewood_Public_Library_theridgewoodblog

The Ridgewood Public Library has no business getting involved in a performing arts center. They are not the village Entertainment Center.

They are trying to build up their numbers by hosting book clubs, cooking clubs and other hobby clubs. What is the purpose of a library? They need to evolve to electronic information – if that even makes sense.

A performing Arts Center should use private funds. Create a nonprofit and give it a go. Government should not be in the entertainment business. And opera and ballet are entertainment.
