Ridgewood NJ, in what The Ridgewood Blog will now boldly categorize as nothing more than a jackass, insensitive, and despicable attempt by Village officials to squelch public dissent, a uniformed Ridgewood police officer was ordered to be present during the entire Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) meeting held on Tuesday night, November 28th.

Readers Discuss the Serving on Village of Ridgewood boards and committees

Ridgewood NJ, The Village Council is looking for residents who are interested in volunteering to serve on the following Boards and Committees:  Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, The Ridgewood Community Center Advisory Board, The Financial Advisory Committee, The Ridgewood Arts Council, and the Shade Tree Commission.

If you want to get involved in Village governance volunteering for Village boards or committees is a great place to start.
There is no upper age limit. The only qualifications are to have something in one’s background that suggests a good fit with the desired committee or whatever. There needs to be enough on the application form and accompanying CV or autobiography to encourage the council to invite the person for an interview. Often these positions are in demand and the council has to have some reason to choose people over others. Yes, residency in Ridgewood is a requirement but you don’t have to have lived here for any particular length of time (viz. Evan Weitz’s Financial Advisory Committee chairmanship upon crossing the town line).

The time commitment is often three years (often renewable by mutual agreement between the individual and the current council at that time), although it varies, but people can quit if they are going to move or an emergency such as illness arises. That’s one reason there are alternates on the Planning Board and Zoning Board, so there’s always someone ready to step in quickly on boards that make very important decisions.

Members of any committee etc. are of course expected to attend meetings regularly, so if a certain night of the week, say, would be an automatic deal breaker, look at the back pages of the village calendar for an idea of which nights each group meets: for example, the Zoning Board of Adjustment meets on a couple of Tuesdays a month. Council members Susan Knudsen and Mike Sedon can answer questions:sknudsen@ridgewoodnj.net andmsedon@ridgewoodnj.net. Also Village Clerk Heather Mailander, hmailander@ridgewoodnj.net, or call her at village hall, 201-670-5500, ext. 201.

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — The village and its Zoning Board of Adjustment are named in a lawsuit filed earlier this month by the owners of the Exxon Mobil station on Route 17.

The suit, filed in Bergen County’s Superior Court, seeks a court order “restraining” the development of a nearby parcel of land.

The land being developed is now the site of a Shell filling station, but the owners want to raze the property and install updated gas pumps and construct a 2,000 square-foot 7-Eleven convenience store.

Those plans received approval from the Zoning Board of Adjustment seven months ago.  The suit seeks to reverse the board’s decision.

Village Chasing Away Another Ridgewood business

A Ridgewood business that performs permanent cosmetic procedures and scar camouflage is fighting the Zoning Board of Adjustment to stay in the village, where it’s been for three years.

Elizabeth Veloz, owner and one of two employees at Endurance Permanent Cosmetics, is appealing the decision of the zoning official “that a business which performs micropigmentation of the skin is not a permissible use in the P-2, professional office district.”

The business is currently located in a Transition District at 75 Oak St., where the zoning board has also determined that it is not permitted, so Veloz is seeking to move to 42-44 S. Maple Ave., the Professional Office District. She said the landlord on South Maple Avenue has been holding the office for her since April.

The issue arose after her Oak Street landlord, Alpe Realty LLC, failed to apply for a certificate of occupancy for Endurance Permanent Cosmetics. The landlord issued what Veloz called a “very nice eviction letter” after the zoning board denied their request to allow the use.

Veloz’s business has been housed in the basement of the converted Oak Street Victorian home for three years with two other tenants on floors above: a therapist and Village Plastic Surgery.
