US Supreme Court agrees to hear new challenge to Obama health care law

NOVEMBER 7, 2014, 12:58 PM    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2014, 11:30 PM

THE WASHINGTON POST |
WIRE SERVICE

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court announced Friday that it will hear the most serious challenge to the Affordable Care Act since the justices found it constitutional more than two years ago: a lawsuit targeting the federal subsidies that help millions of Americans buy health insurance.

More than 4 million people now receive the subsidies, and the Obama administration contends they are essential to the act by making insurance more affordable for low- and middle-income families.

But challengers say the administration is violating the plain language of the law. They are represented by the same conservative legal strategists who fell one vote short of convincing the court the law was unconstitutional the last time around.

The question in this challenge is whether the subsidies should be available to all Americans who qualify, or only to those who purchase insurance through exchanges “established by the state.”

About a third of the states have created exchanges, and the challengers say the subsidies should be available only in those places. As the law authorizes, federal authorities have stepped in to establish exchanges where the states have refused.

50% of occupations today will no longer exist in 2025: Report

Press Trust of India  |  Mumbai
November 7, 2014 Last Updated at 21:40 IST

A paradigm shift is expected to be witnessed in the way workplaces operate over the next 15 years, making nearly 50 per cent of occupations existing today redundant by 2025, a report has said.

Artificial intelligence will transform businesses and the work that people do. Process work, customer work and vast swathes of middle management will simply disappear, it said.

The report titled ‘Fast Forward 2030: The Future of Work and the Workplace’ has been prepared by realty consulting firm CBRE and China-based Genesis, a property developer, after interviewing 220 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia, Europe and North America.

“Nearly 50 per cent of occupations today will no longer exist in 2025. New jobs will require creative intelligence, social and emotional intelligence and ability to leverage artificial intelligence. Those jobs will be immensely more fulfilling than today’s jobs,” the report said.

The Mandate: Republicans Were Elected to Stop Barack Obama, Not to Work with Him

The Mandate: Republicans Were Elected to Stop Barack Obama, Not to Work with Him

November 05, 2014
Windows Media

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: What I want to do here is cut to the chase. The result yesterday is exactly what I said it would be. The Republican Party now has one of the most important and unquestionable mandates a political party has ever had at its junction with American history, especially a political party which did not run on a national agenda. The Republican Party purposely stood mute nationally.

Now, if you go into the races, the House and Senate raises all over the country, you will find that many Republican candidates ran specifically against Obamacare, and that is an important note to make and an important thing for you to remember. Individual Republican candidates won, and they won big. They won in a wave landslide running against Obamacare. The national Republican brand or image didn’t say a word, which makes the mandate that they have all the more incredible.

It is rare that a political party running for office in a midterm election not standing for anything ends up with a mandate, and they have one, and it is the biggest and perhaps the most important mandate a political party has had in the recent era, and it is very simple what that mandate is. It is to stop Barack Obama. It is to stop the Democrats. There is no other reason why Republicans were elected yesterday. Republicans were not elected to govern.

How can you govern with a president that disobeys the Constitution? How can you govern with a president that is demonstrably lawless when he thinks he has to be? The Republican Party was not elected to fix a broken system or to make it work. The Republican Party was not elected to compromise. The Republican Party was not elected to sit down and work together with the Democrats. The Republican Party was not elected to slow down the speed the country is headed to the cliff and go over it slowly.

The Republican Party was elected to stop before we get to the cliff. And that’s the mandate: to stop Obamacare; to stop amnesty; to stop the open borders policy of Obama and the Democrats; to stop the Big Government assault on the free enterprise economy; to stop national security policies that have allowed terrorist networks all over the world to pop up and fill a vacuum created by the absence of the world’s lone superpower on the world stage. That must be stopped.

The Republican Party was elected to stop the run-up of a debt greater than all previous presidents combined have created. The Republican Party was elected to stop efforts by this administration to use the IRS and other agencies of government, in violation of manners and law, in attacking political opponents. The Republican Party was elected to put an end to this incessant and divisive lie that is the War on Women. Yesterday’s result cannot in any way mean that voters want Republicans to work with Democrats. And anybody who tells you that and anybody who thinks that could not be more dangerously wrong.

You do not have election results like we had yesterday with the intent being that the voters intend the winners to work with the losers. This election was about stopping the losers, in this case the Democrats. There can be no other correct analysis of what this election was about. They were not elected to “fix a broken system.”

Weather Channel Morning Show Beats CNN, MSNBC

Weather Channel Morning Show Beats CNN, MSNBC

“Morning Joe” has been shedding viewers for about a year. “New Day” is shaping up to be one of television’s all-time titanic disasters. In other words, it’s not that Al Roker’s numbers are so high, it’s that CNN’s and MSNBC’s numbers are so low.

Overall, this is another sign of the slow-motion fall of left-wing cable news networks. While — thanks to great producing, on-air talent, and a willingness to cover news stories the left-wing MSM ignore — Fox News soars, there is just no reason anymore to tune into CNN or MSNBC.

With some notable exceptions, CNN’s anchors are mostly tired, left-wing, smug, or a mixture of all three; and unless it’s a poop cruise or an airliner that CNN suggests might have been abducted by aliens, the Zucker Network offers the same old-left-wing narratives presented in the same old left-wing way.

For its part, MSNBC is nothing more than left-wing talk radio with pictures.

Thanks to Fox News and the New Media available everywhere online, people now have a choice and they are not choosing CNN or MSNBC.

Ridgewood Police Department: Phone Scam unsolicited calls from credit card companies

Ridgewood Police Department: Phone Scam unsolicited calls from credit card companies
November 4
Phone Scam

The Ridgewood police Department would like to warn residents of the ongoing issue of unsolicited calls from credit card companies offering to lower your rates or offer other services. If you receive one of these calls you should hang up and call your credit card company using the phone number on your credit card to confirm that it was your company calling. We are also getting numerous reports of other phone and email scams they may ask for personal information or advising that a loved one is in danger or jail. Always contact the person that is supposed to be in danger or jail and do not send any types of payment. Please follow the following personal information tips that are recommended.
• Don’t give out your credit card information. Once a scammer has your data, they can charge your credit card for their own purchases or sell the information to other scammers.
• Don’t share other personal financial or sensitive information like your bank account or Social Security numbers. Scam artists often ask for this information during an unsolicited sales pitch, and then use it to commit other frauds against you.
• Be skeptical of any unsolicited sales calls that are prerecorded, especially if your phone number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. You shouldn’t get recorded sales pitches unless you have specifically agreed to accept such calls, with a few exceptions.
If you think you’ve experienced a credit card interest rate reduction scam, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftccomplaintassistant.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).:

Government’s Free Phone Program Riddled With Abuse, Fraud
November 6, 2014 11:15 PM

By Brian Maass
CBS4 Investigates

DENVER (CBS4) – A federally regulated program providing free cellphone service and phones to the poor and needy in Denver appears to be riddled with waste, fraud and abuse, according to an undercover CBS4 Investigation.

The $2 billion a year Lifeline program has handed out more than 13 million free cellphone plans across the country in the first six months of this year. In Colorado, the program handed out more than 117,000 free cellphone plans in the first half of this year, or about 20,000 cellphones every month.

The free phones and their wireless plans are paid for by a monthly tax on your cellphone, called the Universal Service Tax. Although the Lifeline wireless program has been around since 2005 and started under president George W. Bush, it has exploded under President Obama’s administration and the phones are often referred to as “Obamaphones.”

Who should decide education?
David and Terry Anzano

To the Editor:

Public education was intended to be locally controlled by parents and taxpayers. Ridgewood is arguably one of the best local, fully-funded districts in the state with some of the finest teachers and administrators working in our classrooms. For example, the wonderful music program showcases one of many areas of Ridgewood’s “Tradition of Excellence.”

We have become increasingly concerned that parental control is being replaced by mandated state and federal requirements which are tied to Stabilization Aid, waivers from No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top money. This funding dictates high-stakes testing, nationalized copy written standards, state longitudinal data systems and teacher evaluations.

So who decides what is best for our students? Is it the parents working with our teachers and administrators setting an educational path best for the individual learner? Or is it the state’s “one size fits all” approach? What role does our superintendent and Board of Education serve in securing our right to control our local education? Indeed our superintendent has stated that he is an agent of the state carrying out mandated directives from Trenton and Washington, D.C.

Readers say the No Sidewalks Vote is a Huge lawsuit in the making if someone gets run over

Council reluctant to spend money on Clinton Sidewalks , after spending money on so many other seemingly worthless projects

Readers say the No Sidewalks Vote is a Huge lawsuit in the making if someone gets run over

Huge lawsuit in the making if someone gets run over and a precedent setting decision for the next time someone doesn’t want a sidewalk built or replaced in front of their home or business.

Bad call by Sedon on this one. He will be blamed by the 3 numb-nuts when it blows up in all of their faces.

And Attorney Rogers – what is he thinking?

Well Council not following the recommendation of you department heads will really help us if some kid get hit and their parents sue but Albert knows that because(Wait for it) he’s a hotel attorney

This street is very close to the school and is used by many children who walk in the middle of the street because it closed. The center of the world is not at Roberts St. This is a safety issue plane and simple.

Pedestrian safety especially when it comes to children trumps tax payers who don’t want a sidewalk. Where is our Mayor with ADA. Am I to take my walker up the middle of the street. Our Mayor is full of hot air.

Children walking in the middle of a public street? What is this Council thinking? Oh, right – 32 votes.

Planner’s testimony was disheartening
Felicia Angus

To the editor:The village planner’s testimony on Monday night vis-à-vis the amendments to the Ridgewood master plan was disheartening at best. The presentation was anything but impartial. He came across very much as someone who does not have to worry about the ramifications of his recommendations as he does not live in the village. To whimsically say to the effect that “sure there will be more traffic, but there’s traffic anyway” and address the shortage of parking in the same manner made him appear disinterested in the outcomes and effects of his decisions.

In addressing the potential influx of school children, it was pointed out that the taxes on many village houses do not cover their own child’s schooling. This was presented in a manner as to imply that since the average household already doesn’t cover the cost of their children, then what’s the big deal with adding more to the already tight schools and to our already sky high taxes? It is this very attitude that has us in the highest tax bracket predicament that we find ourselves already.

With his talk of students, there should have been added cost projections. Some estimated number of extra children will then push these three elementary schools and middle schools to overflow, and either we redistrict or float yet another bond issue for school expansions, teachers, etc. thereby increasing the average household taxes by X. Because of extra citizens in the town we will now need to hire more policemen, firemen, etc. in order to serve the community safely. What are these added costs? And what is the break even between extra school children and the projected taxes paid on any one of these proposed structures? That is a number we should all know by now. We cannot be OK with the planner’s implication that we will just “pay it forward” in increased taxes to deal with the decisions made today.

Ridgewood planner sees broad benefits to downtown housing

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The issue is not whether new housing should be allowed in Ridgewood at all, emphasized Village Planner Blais Brancheau on Monday.

In his long-awaited testimony on Monday night, the near-end of an almost year-long hearing process, the village planner endorsed the many “broad public benefits” of a master plan amendment that would allow high-density housing in the downtown.

And he noted that “the issue should not be whether multifamily housing should be permitted at all, but to what extent and with what standards.”

Speaking at length to a crowd of about 50 people, including proponents and critics of the three high-density housing developments that have been proposed in and around Ridgewood’s Central Business District (CBD), Brancheau came to this conclusion in part by citing the state redevelopment plan, an NJ Transit document and the non-profit organization Sustainable Jersey.

Presidential Correspondence With Ayatollah Stresses Shared U.S.-Iranian Interests in Combating Insurgents, Urges Progress on Nuclear Talks

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama secretly wrote to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the middle of last month and described a shared interest in fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, according to people briefed on the correspondence.

The letter appeared aimed both at buttressing the campaign against Islamic State and nudging Iran’s religious leader closer to a nuclear deal.

Mr. Obama stressed to Mr. Khamenei that any cooperation on Islamic State was largely contingent on Iran reaching a comprehensive agreement with global powers on the future of Tehran’s nuclear program by a Nov. 24 diplomatic deadline, the same people say.

The October letter marked at least the fourth time Mr. Obama has written Iran’s most powerful political and religious leader since taking office in 2009 and pledging to engage with Tehran’s Islamist government.

‘Trojan Horse’ Bug Lurking in Vital US Computers Since 2011

Nov 6, 2014, 2:13 PM ET
By JACK CLOHERTY and PIERRE THOMAS

A destructive “Trojan Horse” malware program has penetrated the software that runs much of the nation’s critical infrastructure and is poised to cause an economic catastrophe, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

National Security sources told ABC News there is evidence that the malware was inserted by hackers believed to be sponsored by the Russian government, and is a very serious threat.

The hacked software is used to control complex industrial operations like oil and gas pipelines, power transmission grids, water distribution and filtration systems, wind turbines and even some nuclear plants. Shutting down or damaging any of these vital public utilities could severely impact hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Hackers Breach White House’s Unclassified Computer Network

DHS said in a bulletin that the hacking campaign has been ongoing since 2011, but no attempt has been made to activate the malware to “damage, modify, or otherwise disrupt” the industrial control process. So while U.S. officials recently became aware the penetration, they don’t know where or when it may be unleashed.

DHS sources told ABC News they think this is no random attack and they fear that the Russians have torn a page from the old, Cold War playbook, and have placed the malware in key U.S. systems as a threat, and/or as a deterrent to a U.S. cyber-attack on Russian systems – mutually assured destruction.

The hack became known to insiders last week when a DHS alert bulletin was issued by the agency’s Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team to its industry members. The bulletin said the “BlackEnergy” penetration recently had been detected by several companies.
