Several months ago, Dr. Leonard Sax made headlines when he proposed that the lack of discipline we see in America today is simply the surface symptom of a greater problem: the decline of parental authority.
Dr. Sax’s theories were recently underscored by psychologist Lisa Damour in a New York Times piece on the benefits of family dinner time. Although the benefits of family dinners are regularly touted, Ms. Damour wonders how they produce such positive effects when a family often sits down exhausted to a silent and non-interactive meal together. Jersey City Assemblyman Raj Mukherji wants to make sure no voters get in trouble for taking selfies in the voting booth.
Mukherji, a Democrat first elected to the Assembly in 2013, this week introduced legislation that would make it legal for voters to take photographs of their own ballot and share that photo on social media.
The bill comes as a federal appeals court in Boston hears a challenge to a New Hampshire ban on ballot selfie bans.
“Voter turnout can be pathetically low, especially in state and local elections,” Mukherji told The Jersey Journal. “If young people or anybody want to display their pride about being active in their democracy then we shouldn’t hold them back.”
The bill is co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro, of Hoboken, and Assemblywoman Angelica M. Jimenez, of West New York.

Being engaged in their lives keeps the lines of communication open, which is so important in fighting substance use.”
Adolescence is the critical period for the initiation of risky substance use. In fact, nine out of 10 Americans who meet the medical criteria for addiction started smoking, drinking, or using other drugs before age of 18. Research shows that children with more involved parents are less likely to smoke, drink, or use other substances.
Recognizing the importance of the issue, Mrs. Christie has addressed organizations such as Community in Crisis to discuss substance abuse prevention in the local community. During her visit, she met with parents who have suffered the loss of their children to opiate abuse.
Over the last six and half years, Governor Christie and First Lady Mary Pat Christie have put a strong emphasis on changing the conversation on substance use and addiction, including mandatory drug court, the significant expansion of the Narcan program to include training of family and friends of addicts and a recovery coach program.
Ridgewood NJ, Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno was an informative and entertaining speaker at the League of Women Voters of Ridgewood annual fall luncheon on September 22nd at the Old Paramus Reformed Church. The League was thrilled that so many members and their guests were able to attend!
Kim Guadagno was elected New Jersey’s first Lieutenant Governor in November 2009 and was sworn into office on January 19, 2010. She was re-elected to a second term on November 5, 2013. In addition to serving as the Lt. Governor, Kim Guadagno serves as the 33rd Secretary of State.
Lt. Governor Guadagno leads the Christie Administration’s efforts to improve New Jersey’s economic vitality, encourage job growth, streamline government, and make businesses feel welcome again in New Jersey. Lt. Governor Guadagno began her public service career as a federal prosecutor with the Organized Crime & Racketeering Strike Force in Brooklyn, New York. She later married and moved to Monmouth County. At that time, Guadagno became an Assistant United States Attorney in Newark. She was awarded the nation’s highest honor for her prosecutions of two separate corrupt public officials. After her federal service, Guadagno served as a ranking member of the State of New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
In 2001, Kim Guadagno left the public sector to practice law closer to home and became a teacher at Rutgers University School of Law-Newark. She was also appointed to the Monmouth Beach planning board and was elected as a Borough Commissioner in 2005.
In 2007, Kim Guadagno was elected as the first woman sheriff in Monmouth County’s history. As Sheriff, she managed a 650-member law enforcement agency encompassing the county jail, the county 911 communications center, and a law enforcement department of 100 men and women. She left both the Office of Sheriff and her position as a teacher at Rutgers Law School upon becoming Lt. Governor.
Lt. Governor Guadagno was born in Waterloo, Iowa and is a cum laude graduate of Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. She received her juris doctorate degree, cum laude, from the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. Lt. Governor Guadagno and her husband currently reside in Monmouth Beach with their three sons.

BOE-REA Sign Memorandum of Agreement
The Board of Education and the REA negotiating teams signed a Memorandum of Agreement at 12:15 AM on September 13, 2016 concluding negotiations on a 3-year contract for the period July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2018. Terms of the agreement will be released after the REA members have ratified the contract and the Board of Education approves the contract.

From the moment the EmailGate scandal went public more than a year ago, it was obvious that the Federal Bureau of Investigation never had much enthusiasm for prosecuting Hillary Clinton or her friends. Under President Obama, the FBI grew so politicized that it became impossible for the Bureau to do its job – at least where high-ranking Democrats are concerned.
As I observed in early July, when Director James Comey announced that the FBI would not be seeking prosecution of anyone on Team Clinton over EmailGate, the Bureau had turned its back on its own traditions of floating above partisan politics in the pursuit of justice. “Malfeasance by the FBI, its bending to political winds, is a matter that should concern all Americans, regardless of their politics,” I stated, noting that it’s never a healthy turn of events in a democracy when your secret police force gets tarnished by politics.
Hillary is a hard-core political animal who made a deal with the devil many decades ago to accept her husband’s infidelity and sexual brutality with other women in exchange for a shot at being president herself. Her single-minded, conscience-free approach to politics and campaigning permits her to lie with abandon and ruthlessly mow down her opponents. This characteristic, the complete absence of shame married with an obviously bottomless contempt for republicans and conservatives and a willingness to publicly politically disembowel them when the time is right, is what makes her so valuable to her colleagues in the Democratic Party, and by extension to the legion of Democrat Party faithful whose visceral hatred for republicans is their only truly independent motivating force.
Trump is willing to expend political capital right now, and risk offending many a pearl-clutcher, by descending temporarily into the gutter to fight with fire by pitting Bill Clinton’s longtime lover Gennifer Flowers against Hillary’s new best friend Mark Cuban. This will cost Trump in the short term but he is strong and will rebound. Hillary (and by now, she knows this) will eventually suffer the schlonging of a lifetime at Trump’s hands in November. Together with Hillary, go-along-to-get-along Republicans will find that they have been sidelined permanently in favor of an approach that elevates the welfare of the average citizen to the top rank of our national interests. Very little will remain of the political elite’s much vaunted citadel of power after 8 years of Trump as president followerd by 8 years of Pence in the same office. And America will be so much better off…
Ridgewood NJ, As much as American workers look forward to retirement, many of them also worry that retirement is a luxury they can’t afford.
In fact, about one-fourth express concerns about running out of cash in retirement, according to a survey by the Indexed Annuity Leadership Council.
The problem, says Marco Kozlowski, (www.marcokozlowski.com) an entrepreneur and business consultant, is that too many people lock themselves into a few limited options for funding their retirement nest egg.
Social Security provides a small amount of income, but after that people rely on what little savings they can muster after paying bills and taking care of other daily living expenses.
When they realize their savings are coming up short, they consider alternative retirement plans, such as delaying Social Security so monthly payments will be higher, working in retirement, or turning to investments such as real estate to provide a different path to security.
Kozlowski is a proponent of the real estate alternative, but he warns that real estate comes with its own caveats.
“People think when you are talking about real estate that it’s going to be some get-rich-quick situation,” Kozlowski says. “It’s not. To be successful at it takes effort and education on how to do things correctly. Buying a home and buying investment property have completely different rules.”
Those willing to get educated and to put in the hard work will find that real estate can be the ticket to healthy retirement plan, he says.
He has a few tips to help those interested avoid some common pitfalls:
• Buy it right. Be on the lookout for the best deals. Ideally, you want to find properties that you can buy at a discount. If you really know what you are doing, you can get 20 percent or more off the actual property value. Don’t worry about the seller’s asking price. “If you make an offer and it gets accepted, you paid too much,” he says. • Don’t fear negotiations. When it’s not something you do on a regular basis, negotiating can seem intimidating and uncomfortable. Some people just don’t like it, but good negotiations are critical and inevitable for success in life and real estate, so Kozlowski suggests just having fun with it. “Negotiations are nothing more than a conversation with another person, but with a goal in mind,” he says. “Remember that money is made on the buy. I’d rather get 100 rejected offers and one accepted at the right price. Rejection is free; a bad deal is costly.” • Consider hiring a management firm. Owning and maintaining real estate can consume a lot of time. It’s best to get a management company to manage the properties and tenants for you so you can devote your time to other more important things – like making more offers to get more great deals in your portfolio • Explore financing options. There are many ways to finance a real estate purchase. You don’t have to use your own capital and you don’t have to go through a bank. For example, you can seek out private money. You may pay more in interest, Kozlowski says, but there’s no limit on how many loans you can get as is the case with many banks.
Kozlowski cautions that real estate investing can be risky – especially if you don’t educate yourself before taking the plunge.
“The way to reduce all risk is through knowledge,” he says. “Everything we learn helps use avoid some sort of risk. In that sense, real estate investing isn’t much different from anything else in life.”
