Northern Valley Old Tappan Invitational. Taking First Place over all, Best Color,Best Music,Best Overall Effect,

The Ridgewood High School Band Program is renowned as one of New Jersey’s top comprehensive music programs, and is Bergen County’s largest band program with over 200 students involved each year. The Impressive array of curricular and co-curricular ensembles is organized in a logical sequence of instruction, which helps each student develop his or her talent and ability while maintaining the highest standards of performance. Each of our performing ensembles and related groups has received superior ratings at festivals and competitions around the country in all areas of band performance, from concert band to jazz ensemble, and chamber music to marching band. Our reputation for quality music performances is second only to the reputation we enjoy for the outstanding quality of young adults who pass through our ensembles.

The band program enjoys a history nearly a century old. During the past decade, Ridgewood High School band students have performed in major venues ranging from Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, one of the worlds most prestigious concert halls, to the famed Jack Morton Auditorium in Washington DC and New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Our groups have appeared at colleges and universities including Harvard University, George Mason University, and the University of Southern California, and have worked with some of the music world’s greatest composers, conductors, and solo performers.

The Band Program is just one facet of the award winning music department at Ridgewood High School, which has been named a Grammy Arts School in 1998-1999 and again in 2003-2004. The Band Program is particularly proud to have played an important role in the Nation Association of Music Merchants decision to name Ridgewood one of the “Best communities for Music Education in America.” Other awards have included NJAJE Finalist status for both jazz ensembles, more than a dozen appearances at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Young Musicians Concert, and a return for the Marching Band to the top five at the USBands National Championships at MetLife Stadium. Individually, members of the Ridgewood High School Bands are chosen annually to perform in honors ensembles at the county, regional, and state level.

Ridgewood Knights of Columbus – Annual Stickball Tournament

Ridgewood Knights of Columbus – Annual Stickball Tournament

September 24,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ,The Ridgewood Knights of Columbus Council #1736 is once again proud to be hosting their annual stickball tournament on Saturday October 8, beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Passaic Street in Ridgewood. This year’s tournament will feature both men’s and women’s teams, with a pig roast lunch afterward.

Now in its seventh year, the Ridgewood Knights of Columbus annual stickball tournament and its “taking it to the streets” theme takes on a whole new meaning, as the Knights this year are partnering with The Run for Hope Foundation to raise funds for Mt. Carmel’s Homeless Ministry Retreat. The Homeless Ministry Retreat is a spiritual program to help transform lives for the recently homeless. Through the retreats – one for men and one for women – homeless participants experience hope, faith, and unity through a caring network of men and women from different socio-economic conditions.
Participants can register online at www.runforhopefoundation.org.  The cost for a team of four is $100, or $25 per person. Non-players are also encouraged to cheer on the teams and enjoy a pig roast lunch afterward. The cost for lunch is $25 per person or $75 per family. Corporate sponsors and matching donations also welcome. All proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to the Homeless Ministry Retreat.

Reader says Ridgewood Planning Board lawsuit indicates that Pucciarelli should have recused earlier

Ridgewood 3 amigos

Well this is off subject but I do not know where else to post it. The Ridgewood News today has a great article about the high density housing fight. A lawsuit indicates that Pucciarelli should have recused way earlier than he did. When asked by the reporter to comment Mr. Pucciarelli declined. Love it. Mr. Big talker who could not shut up ever when he was on the dais now has his mouth shut. Have a crappy weekend Big Al the Developers Pal.

Reader says For some, free speech is only good when they agree with it…

500px-MPFS_dueling_01

For some, free speech is only good when they agree with it… otherwise it should be deleted.
.
Its one thing to oppose speech with other speech. This is the essence of free speech – an exchange of ideas and opinions – even those you find offensive. Freedom is inherently messy. Authoritarianism is inherently neat, but also repressive.
.
Freedom also means including everyone – another basic tenant – even those who are “below the standard”. Some might say that the definition of freedom (speech or otherwise) IS the inclusion of those who are “below the standard”. Let’s not forget that in a free society, “the standard” is a naturally occurring measure which is based on ALL participants. In a repressive society, the standard is arbitrarily set.

Reader says We know there are two or three people who troll the Ridgewood blog and hate every word

kim jong il team america15 0

We know there are two or three people who troll the blog and hate every word. A former deputy mayor. The husband of a former councilwoman. A former fire chief who sent an ANONYMOUS threatening letter to a subordinate. The husband of a former village manager. A dapper little gnome who uses big words to compensate for the total lack of content in his diatribes.

For the few of you it is a simple solution, just don’t log into the blog (but….we know you cannot help yourselves!)

For the rest of us, the blog provides an open forum where we can say what we really feel. And I appreciate that James keeps vulgar language off.

Trump threatens to bring Gennifer Flowers to debate

Jennifer Flowers

By Elliot Smilowitz

Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to bring a woman that Bill Clinton had an extramarital affair with when he debates Hillary Clinton Monday.

“If dopey Mark Cuban of failed Benefactor fame wants to sit in the front row, perhaps I will put Jennifer Flowers [sic] right alongside of him!” Trump initially tweeted.

Shortly after, Trump deleted the tweet and reposted it with the correct spelling of Flowers’s first name.

Aleya Labs Launches Contempo Political App: Swipe Left for ‘the Left’ and Right for ‘the Right’

Contempo

September 25,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, there is new data about how politics cause family drama – and where Americans get their political news.

Ten percent of Americans said every event is complicated by political differences; while a chilled-out minority – three percent – said they didn’t think any were.

More than half (54 percent) of Millennials voted Christmas/Hannukah as the tensest social event due to political differences, nearly half (49 percent) said it was Thanksgiving and 47 percent said 4th of July, while their parents’ generation felt cocktails parties (38 percent) invited the most unpleasant discussions about politics.

The current political race is pitting generation against generation:

  • 20% of millennials say parents cause them grief
  • 20% of Gen Xers admit to disagreeing with their in-laws the most in politics
  • 20% of Baby Boomers say they fight most with their siblings due to political differences

Couples are in jeopardy too: one in four Americans say their significant other is supporting the “other” candidate.

Across age demographics, Americans voted CNN and Fox News as their favorite news sources when it comes to politics

As for most trusted political influencers, Americans said they read/listen to Bill O’Reilly the most for a conservative point of view (28 percent) and Anderson Cooper for a liberal point of view (45 percent).

The least popular? Americans rank Anna Navaro and Peter Wehner (both at .1%) as the lest watched conservative influencers and Sally Kohn and Kristen Powers (both at .1%) as the least popular liberal influencers.

This data comes from a new app called Contempo, which has a proprietary algorithm which analyzes the social media sentiment of liberal and conservative political influencers to show what’s actually trending on both sides. The app provides a quick snapshot of the political news landscape to inform and empower Americans during this election—and with an in-app browser to bring users back to the stories’ original homepage, it’s the perfect tool for on the go news.

Contempo is the first app from Aleya Labs, the company helmed by former Microsoft veteran, Sal Arora

Contempo can help. The app features a full integration with Rock the Vote, giving users the ability to register to vote, check polling locations, and check their registration status, without leaving the app.

Contempo is a free app and can be downloaded via the App Store.

4 Tips For Making Your Retirement Savings Last Longer

piggyBank

September 24,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, Many retirees and those nearing retirement express a common fear.

They worry about running out of money; finding their bank account drained with years of life still ahead of them.

“The reality is that a large percentage of Americans simply don’t have the kind of savings they need,”  says Chuck Price, president of Price Financial Group Wealth Management Inc. (www.pfgwm.com) and author of “Investing Simplified: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You.”

“When that’s the case, there are other strategies they’ll need to consider.”

His suggestions for stretching retirement dollars as much as possible include:

• Work longer. Nothing says you have to stop working at a particular age. You can continue in your career, find a new one or just work part-time. Even temporary employment can help keep the cash flowing so you don’t have to tap into your savings too much.
• Cultivate alternative income streams. You can reduce your reliance on your retirement portfolio by cultivating income streams. “This could be done through a side business or maybe by making investments outside your retirement portfolio that pay dividends,” Price says. “There are a number of ways you might be able to come up with some extra income.”
• Cut costs. Are there expenses you can get rid of if money becomes too tight? Maybe you don’t need to play golf every day or dine out so often. Are you paying for insurance on an extra car that you really don’t need anymore or for a motorcycle you rarely ride? “Retirement is supposed to be fun, I know, but in tough economic times you’ll have to make decisions,” Price says. “If your situation improves, you can add some of those luxuries back later.”
• Reconsider the financial help you give others. Older people often want to help their children and grandchildren financially, but you might need to cut back on your charity. “If your own survival and financial situation is being threatened, you need to pull back a bit,” Price says. “You’re trying to make your money outlive you, so it might be necessary in times of economic turmoil to reduce how much you provide to others.”

On the upside, Price says, it’s worth noting that expenses in retirement might not end up being as much as you think.

“Most people spend less money as they get older because they stop driving, traveling and buying clothes,” Price says. “The main exception is if there’s a need for long-term care, which can be very expensive.

“But most of my clients in retirement, usually after about age 80, aren’t spending anywhere close to what they planned for.”

He also is author of “Investing Simplified: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You.” Price has more than 40 years of financial experience and hosts a popular radio show, “Investing Simplified,” that airs on Freedom 970 in Portland, Ore.
