CHICAGO (Reuters) – Top Zika investigators now believe that the birth defect microcephaly and the paralyzing Guillain-Barre syndrome may be just the most obvious maladies caused by the mosquito-borne virus.
Fueling that suspicion are recent discoveries of serious brain and spinal cord infections – including encephalitis, meningitis and myelitis – in people exposed to Zika.
Evidence that Zika’s damage may be more varied and widespread than initially believed adds pressure on affected countries to control mosquitoes and prepare to provide intensive – and, in some cases, lifelong – care to more patients. The newly suspected disorders can cause paralysis and permanent disability – a clinical outlook that adds urgency to vaccine development efforts.
Scientists are of two minds about why these new maladies have come into view. The first is that, as the virus is spreading through such large populations, it is revealing aspects of Zika that went unnoticed in earlier outbreaks in remote and sparsely populated areas. The second is that the newly detected disorders are more evidence that the virus has evolved.

NJ TRANSIT bus customers will be able to use the popular mobile app to purchase their one-way tickets for interstate bus travel on Bus Routes Nos. 126, 156, 158 and 159. The NJ TRANSIT mobiel app’s popularity has grown steadily since its inception in 2013 as the My Tix program, with 800,000 customer accounts. This latest enhancement provides another option for ticket-purchases for customers.
The NJ TRANSIT mobile app is available for free download on any web-enabled iOS or Android device. To make a purchase, customers simply install the app and then create an account, which will securely save a customer’s profile information and purchase history for ease of use.
“Customers have told us how much they love the ease and convenience that mobile apps provide,’’ said NJ TRANSIT’s interim Executive Director Dennis Martin. “We are very excited to offer this latest expansion of the mobile app as it gives our bus customers the ability to purchase tickets for their New York/New Jersey interstate travels. With every new app release we continue to make it even better.’’
The NJ TRANSIT mobile ticketing has continued to evolve. In September 2015, NJ TRANSIT customers were offered the convenience and ease to utilize their mobile devices to access MyTix, NJ TRANSIT train schedules, DepartureVision, MyBus and trip planning functionality, allowing them to quickly make travel plans, buy tickets and get transit information. Also at that time, all customers were offered the chance to pay with PayPal, allowing NJ TRANSIT customers to transfer payments electronically.

But a recent Federal Reserve Bank of New York report says the devil is in the details. Not all new college graduates are doing equally well. The kind of degree they earned is an enormous factor in the job hunt.

Whether you’re an artist, athlete, musician, theater major, English student, a STEM-field student, or a business major or future entrepreneur, getting experience often comes with a heavy price. This includes the loss of personal or family finances. Look for opportunities that provide guidance while allowing you to apply skills to real-life challenges such as budgeting, marketing, and managing employees. These are transferable skills that apply to any industry.
“Regardless of how the economy is doing, you’ll want to put forth your best effort,” Stewart says. “As we’ve seen, the market can take a nosedive at any time.”

On April 4th the visual approach (5 mile visibility, 3000 ceiling) for airplaneslanding at Teterboro will change. If residents want to communicate their concern about this change, they can call the hotline 201/288-8828 to register a complaint or file a complaint online here. All comments will be reviewed by Teterboro Airport Noise Office staff who will follow up with residents. Complaint statistics will be shared with the FAA.
It is important that the public register their complaints about aircraft noise. Complaints are one of the few ways to monitor how the 6 month study will affect local quality of life.
Ridgewood NJ, Valley is a business first and foremost. They do not pay taxes, do minimal charity work and pay their execs millions.
As any time they can be acquired/sold to a large hospital system, making the execs even more money.
This expansion is an attempt to polish their brand, nice hospital in upscale setting. Who wouldn’t want to go there for elective surgery? They compete against hospitals in Bergen, Pasaic, Rockland, Westchester and Dutchess counties. The judge sais that he was looking out for the needs of the region not just the neighbors.
While the “common good” is often sighted as the reason for the Valley Expansion ,but in 2012 The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood did all they could to block HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley from opening .
It’s important for young East Side parents to understand how important this is. Your kids are little but this project will still be going on when they are in middle school. Think about that for a minute. Valley does NOT care about you our your kids. Their lawsuit against the Village claims that Ridgewood “acted capriciously” but putting the needs of Valley’s immediate neighbors (including Travell School and BF Middle School) above the needs of the region. Said a different way, any detriment to Valley’s immediate neighbors will be outweighed by their self proclaimed benefits to the broader region.
Ridgewood NJ, The men caved and the women behaved like troopers. The men all voted YES for less than gallant reasons: Fear of further litigation and possible results that might be worse than the ” so called compromise.”
The women believed that Ridgewood was worth that risk and felt that the detrimental effects of the Valley Expansion far out weighed any benefits.
The public comments were unbelievable including little kids who spoke eloquently.
Our Board of Education members were missing and should have been there and should have advocated for Benjamin Franklin Middle school . Their primary concern should be the health and safety of the children. I don’t know why they would concede to Valley without a good argument for a better compromise. We elected them to represent us.
Again I don’t know who is looking out for Ridgeood except Susan, Wendy and Debbie, The “Steel Magnolias” of the Planning Board.
It’s a done deal. No matter how much you whine about what’s transpired it finished… Everyone knew that once this thing was presented to a neutral third party for review ( A judge who is a she rather than a he) it was going to go in favor of the hospital. And rightfully so. It’s not all about YOU. It’s about building a hospital that is sorely needed for the GREATER GOOD of all the residents in the surrounding towns. You should have bought your home in Ho Ho Kus or Saddle River, not on top of A VERY LARGE MULTI YEAR EXISTING HOSPITAL.
This is exactly what I’m talking about…complete nonsense and blather. You are a classic example of whats wrong with your minority. Sorry to leave you behind, were moving forward and making progress for the greater good. PS your property value just dropped 20 %. Good luck with that.
Because that’s where Valley is and has been since 1952. What difference does it make moving the well established campus 1/2 west on Linwood Avenue? Mahwah? Why the hell would we want it up there??? Listen, Just because you bought a home in the lap of the hospital and now your in a tizzy because the inevitable that was bound to happen is now happening just doesn’t cut. The hospital was a part of this community long before you got here. It belongs in Ridgewood and here it will stay…For many many years to come.

TRENTON — Lawmakers took action on a package of bills that would impose tougher state regulations on tiered health plans Monday, sparked by a backlash against Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey’s new OMNIA products that steer cost-conscious patients to select hospitals.
The Assembly Regulatory Oversight Committee approved four bills that would require more disclosure on how hospitals and doctors are chosen to join tiered networks. State regulators would have to insure hospitals that serve low-income people are included in these networks, which offer consumers the choice of paying less if they use hospitals and doctors in the preferred tier.
When Horizon last fall debuted the two-tiered OMNIA plans and the cost-cutting arrangement it had struck with 36 “tier 1” hospitals, it instantly generated outrage among the hospitals relegated to “tier 2” status. Patients could still use them but would pay higher co-pays and have to meet higher deductibles to do so.
Jitters over the health of the Chinese economy could trigger a bloodbath on financial markets if a hard landing materialises, the International Monetary Fund has warned.
The IMF said policy choices in the world’s second largest economy would also have “increasing implications for global financial stability” in the coming years as the country opens up its bond and equity markets.
The fund said emerging market economies such as China, India, Brazil and Russia had driven more than half of global growth over the past 15 years.

Ridgewood NJ, U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, considered New Jersey’s most vulnerable House incumbent, will now face two RINO (Republican in Name only) Republican primary opponents before he can take on well-funded and Clinton connected and Wall Street connected Democratic challenger Josh Gottheimer in November.
Garrett has been under attack from his own party for a whole host of issues for years .He has received little to non campaign support form DC.
Garret has come under fire from his own party for not towing the party line and supporting DC’ s borrow and spending binge , not supporting the preordained GOP speaker candidate for the House , and more importantly opposing “to big to fail ” financial regulation .
Peter Vallorosi of Newton and Michael Cino of Demarest have filed petitions with the state Division of Elections to challenge Garrett in the state’s June 7 primary. Mr. Cino lost to Garrett in a landslide in the 2012 GOP congressional primary.
The New Jersey’s media claims Garrett has been also been criticized for allegedly saying he would not support the House Republicans’ fundraising arm because it backed gay candidates. Many insiders view the ‘gay issues” as a smoke screen.
However in a recent interview, the seven-term incumbent insisted that his litmus test was whether a candidate backed the Republican platform’s opposition to same-sex marriage, not the sexual orientation of a particular nominee.
Garret is a House Financial Services subcommittee chairman, and has been prolific fundraiser among Wall Street and banking employees. In response to his media alleged comments, some companies have said they will no longer make political action committee contributions to his campaign. However, Garrett banked $2.4 million for his re-election campaign through Dec. 31., while his Democratic opponent, former White House speechwriter Josh Gottheimer, entered 2016 with $1.3 million in the bank.
