Reader says new bike lane by the Ridgewood train station appears very ill-conceived, dangerous and might not be legal in New Jersey

The new bike lane by the Ridgewood train station strikes me as very ill-conceived, and frankly, dangerous.  It is the first bike lane I have ever seen that crosses over from the right shoulder into a space between two car lanes.  The fact that it is on a sharp decline, just after a hard right turn, and just before a busy intersection, makes it even worse.

https://theridgewoodblog.net/reader-says-new-bike-lane-by-the-ridgewood-train-station-appears-very-ill-conceived-dangerous-and-might-not-be-legal-in-new-jersey/

Ridgewood NJ, Almost one year later the “Traffic Easing “project continues to appear ,”very ill-conceived, and frankly, dangerous”. When this project was initially hatched a project no one in town including some very long term residents had ever heard of until ground was basically broken.

At the time the Village Manager assured us that there were no traffic issues at Garber Square. Where as any resident knows that by 7:15 am on any given day there are cars backed up West  Ridgewood Ave, waiting to get through the light or into the train station. The same can be said at the end of the day. With some days heavy traffic extends throughout the morning.

This really was seen by many as the tipping point of  “trust factor” for those in charge. Residents organized as a community to challenge this decision and were categorically dismissed as not wanting change, NIMBY’s and not knowing what we were talking about.

Traffic study? Who needs that? We will calibrate the traffic lights to make it all better. We know better than you guys do. Well, unfortunately the bikers ,for fear of their lives have not come but the traffic sure has. Now the projects and the stakes are getting much bigger than a poorly thought out bike lane of death or an obnoxious flashing sign telling passing motorists to eat and shop in Ridgewood. Residents continue to be told , rest assured everything has been carefully thought out and planned by professionals. These projects so far certainly don’t seem to show that and one wonders why some many residents don’t view the town council as having the residents best interests in mind with these projects.

THE RECORD

Bergen County officials have declared a hiring freeze while they pursue a disputed wave of layoffs scheduled to take effect by Jan. 1.

County Administrator Dominic Novelli disclosed the freeze in Monday night’s Freeholder meeting while answering a question from a woman in the audience who had asked why there are no jobs currently listed on the county’s website.

“We currently are in a job freeze,” he replied. “We’re not filling positions. We’re actually in the midst of a layoff.”

Related:  Judge won’t block layoffs of 8 Bergen County employees claiming dismissals are political payback

Novelli said after the meeting that the freeze has been in effect since September when the administration made the decision to issue layoff notices to 21 employees on Nov. 1. The notices state that the layoffs were for reasons of “economy and efficiency.”

He said the job freeze did not apply to certain positions, like juvenile detention officers or nurses working in county facilities where there are state-mandated staffing levels.

Novelli’s comments were the first public disclosure of the hiring freeze. It did not come up last week in a hearing in federal court on a lawsuit filed by eight county employee who alleged that they were targeted for layoffs because of their past support of former Republican County Executive Kathleen Donovan.

Judicial Watch Sues for Documents Withheld From Congress in New Climate Data Scandal

abominable-snowman-520169

DECEMBER 22, 2015

the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, Judicial Watch announced today that it filed a lawsuit on December 2, 2015, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking records of communications from National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) officials regarding methodology for collecting and interpreting data used in climate models (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of Commerce (No 1:15-cv-02088)). The lawsuit sought the same documents unsuccessfully subpoenaed by a House committee.  Less than week after Judicial Watch served its lawsuit on NOAA, the agency finally turned over the targeted documents to Congress.

Judicial Watch sued the Department of Commerce after the agency failed to respond to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted on October 30, 2015 – NOAA is a component of the Department of Commerce.  The timeframe for the requested records is October 30, 2014, through October 30, 2015, and requests all documents and records of communications between NOAA officials, employees, and contractors regarding:

The methodology and utilization of night marine air temperatures to adjust ship and buoy temperature data;
The use of other global temperature datasets for both NOAA’s in-house dataset improvements and monthly press releases conveying information to the public about global temperatures;
The utilization and consideration of satellite bulk atmospheric temperature readings for use in global temperature datasets; and
A subpoena issued for the aforementioned information by Congressman Lamar Smith on October 13, 2015.

Judicial Watch is investigating how NOAA collects and disseminates climate data that is used in determining global climate change. NOAA collects data in thousands of ways – from temperature gauges on land and buoys at sea, to satellites orbiting Earth.  Considered the “environmental intelligence agency,” NOAA is the nation’s leading collector of climate data.  In July, Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) asked NOAA for both data and internal communications related to a controversial climate change study.  After the agency refused to comply with the document request, Smith’s committee issued a subpoena on October 13. According to the Science, Space, and Technology Committee:

In June, NOAA widely publicized a study as refuting the nearly two-decade pause in climate change. After three letters requesting all communications from the agency surrounding the role of political appointees in the agency’s scientific process, Chairman Smith issued a subpoena for the information. Smith subsequently sent a letter on December 1st offering to accept documents and communications from NOAA political, policy and non-scientific staff as a first step in satisfying the subpoena requirements.

Information provided to the Committee by whistleblowers appears to show that the study was rushed to publication despite the concerns and objections of a number of NOAA employees.

Judicial Watch sued the agency on December 2 and served the complaint on the agency on December 8.  Less than a week later, on Tuesday, December 15, NOAA finally began to turn over documents to the House committee.  That same day, NOAA called and told Judicial Watch that it would begin searching for documents responsive to Judicial Watch’s FOIA request.

On November 26, Smith published an opinion editorial in The Washington Times, which accused NOAA of tampering with data to help promote global warming alarmism:

NOAA often fails to consider all available data in its determinations and climate change reports to the public. A recent study by NOAA, published in the journal Science, made “adjustments” to historical temperature records and NOAA trumpeted the findings as refuting the nearly two-decade pause in global warming. The study’s authors claimed these adjustments were supposedly based on new data and new methodology. But the study failed to include satellite data.

“We have little doubt that our lawsuit helped to pry these scandalous climate change report documents from the Obama administration.  The Obama administration seems to care not one whit for a congressional subpoena but knows from prior experience that a Judicial Watch FOIA lawsuit cannot be ignored,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.  “Given the lawless refusal to comply with our FOIA request and a congressional subpoena, we have little doubt that the documents will show the Obama administration put politics before science to advance global warming alarmism.”

Judicial Watch previously investigated alleged data manipulation by global warming advocates in the Obama administration.  In 2010, Judicial Watch obtained internal documents from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) related to a controversy that erupted in 2007 when Canadian blogger Stephen McIntyre exposed an error in NASA’s handling of raw temperature data from 2000-2006 that exaggerated the reported rise in temperature readings in the United States. According to multiple press reports, when NASA corrected the error, the new data apparently caused a reshuffling of NASA’s rankings for the hottest years on record in the United States, with 1934 replacing 1998 at the top of the list.

In late 2014, Judicial Watch litigation forced out documents withheld in response to another congressional subpoena – one issued in the Fast and Furious scandal. Thanks to the Judicial Watch lawsuit, Congress finally obtained the information it had sought for years on Obama’s gun-running scandal.

Ridgewood Residents Reach Out to Neighbor with Multiple Sclerosis

Support Lesley Ellis Linker

The friends of Lesley Ellis Linker, a 45-year-old Ridgewood, NJ mother of young children who is unable to work due to advanced Multiple Sclerosis and who has been devastated by the breakdown of her family, are seeking your help.

Lesley was diagnosed with MS at age 33, when she had almost no symptoms.  She married and had two children, now 6 and 10.  Over the past 5 years Lesley’s disease has progressed to where she is a prisoner in her own body.  She can no longer walk or stand, or see well enough to read regular print.  She is confined to a wheelchair.

Despite her hardships, Lesley has been able to parent her children consistently and lovingly.  She oversees all aspects of the children’s upbringing including dinners together, homework help, bedtime stories and most importantly, Lesley comforts them during trying times and provides them with unconditional love at all times.

In January 2015, Lesley’s husband moved out of the family home.

Despite Medicare and Social Security disability payments, the costs associated with Lesley’s care have become staggering.  Lesley’s around-the-clock home health aide alone costs over $5,000 per month, which is not covered by insurance, any governmental agency or other organization.  Lesley, her soon-to-be ex-husband, her retired schoolteacher parents, and her brother are struggling to cover these costs.  The financial and emotional strain on them is severe and cannot be sustained.

Lesley’s pre-owned handicapped-accessible van has been breaking down and cannot be repaired.  It will cost at least $55,000 to replace.  A safe mode of transportation for her and her children is critical to Lesley’s peace of mind and sense of independence, yet this cost is out of the family’s reach.

Just as important for the children, as they’ve witnessed their mother lose the ability to walk and as they’ve had to come to terms with their parents’ separation and impending divorce, is the continuity of their public school, friends and neighbors.  Yet Lesley and the children may not be able to afford to stay in their modest home in Ridgewood.   An exhausting and often very upsetting 16-month search for an even more modest wheelchair accessible apartment or other accommodation in Ridgewood has yielded nothing thus far.

Through all of the heartbreak of recent years, Lesley has been incredibly grateful to help her babies grow and has worked hard to maintain an optimistic outlook for them.  With your support, we can work to alleviate her outsized share of unfairness, sadness, humiliation and struggle.  Monies raised in this campaign will go directly toward replacing Lesley’s lift van, and any surplus will be use to defray the cost of her home health aide as well as start a fund for Lesley’s living costs.  Please help us to keep Lesley and the children safe and help restore their quality of life by contributing to this campaign.  Thank you.

Please note that donations will not be tax-deductible to the donor.  Thank you again.

Guns topping Christmas lists thanks to terrorism concerns, fear over restriction

guns

by Taboola

The convergence of fears over terrorism, a perceived threat of gun laws being changed and the Christmas holiday have sent gun sales soaring in what is already the busiest month of the year for firearm purchases.

Guns are at the top of many Christmas lists, especially if November is any indication.

Last month, the FBI ran more than 2.2 million firearm background checks on potential buyers, a 24 percent increase from November 2014. On Black Friday, a record 185,345 background checks were processed by the FBI.

U.S. economy set to grow less than 3% for the 10th straight year

US President Obama waves from a golf cart in Kailua

Published: Dec 22, 2015 10:08 a.m. ET

The economy expanded a touch slower in the third quarter than previously reported, revised government figures show, but the path of growth is still the same: The U.S. running well below the historical norm more than six years into a recovery.

Gross domestic product — the sum of all the activity in an economy — increased at a 2% annual pace from July to September, according to the government’s latest update. Previously the Commerce Department had said the U.S. grew at a 2.1% rate after a 3.9% increase in the second quarter.

The slight downgrade was triggered by a larger trade deficit and a smaller buildup in inventories than earlier estimates showed.

The U.S. expanded at a 2.2% rate through the first nine months of the year, and the economy is projected to grow at a similar pace in the fourth quarter that ends on Dec. 31. If so, the economy will have failed to reach 3% growth for the 10th straight year, marking the slowest stretch since the end of World War II.

Historically the economy has expanded at a 3.3% rate.

The government’s second update on GDP growth reflected a somewhat worse trade picture in the late summer and early fall. Exports rose a slower 0.7% instead of an earlier 0.9% estimate. And imports climbed 2.3% instead of 2.1%.

Companies also rebuilt inventories somewhat less than the government had tallied.

The value of inventories increased $85.5 billion, down from a prior $90.2 billion estimate. Inventories had jumped by $113.5 billion in the second quarter when the economy expanded at a much faster 3.9% clip.

Spending on home construction rose at a faster 8.2% pace in the third quarter instead of 7.3%, the revised Commerce Department figures show.

PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY: TRUMP IS ‘LAST HOPE FOR AMERICA’

Trump_hat_boarder-theridgewoodblog

I don’t see anyone else who’s eager to fight’

Phyllis Schlafly, an icon of the conservative movement who has been active for half a century, is warning the nation: Donald Trump is the last hope for America.

Schlafly unloaded on Republicans in Congress for passing the $1.1 trillion omnibus bill last week, a move she called a “betrayal.”

“This is a betrayal of the grassroots and of the Republican Party,” Schlafly said in an exclusive interview with WND. “We thought we were electing a different crowd to stand up for America, and they didn’t. We’re extremely outraged by what Congress has done. Nancy Pelosi couldn’t have engineered it any better. I think the people are going to react by electing Donald Trump.”

Trump put out a statement Friday to ABC News saying, “If anyone needs more evidence of why the American people are suffering at the hands of their own government, look no further than the budget deal announced by Speaker Ryan. In order to avoid a government shutdown, a cowardly threat from an incompetent president, the elected Republicans in Congress threw in the towel and showed absolutely no budget discipline.”

PARAMUS — A 48-year-old Teaneck woman hit a Paterson teenager in the head with a 15-inch metal pipe during a fight over a parking spot at the Garden State Plaza mall over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

Kenia E. Nicolas-King was charged with aggravated assault and was released, said Deputy Chief Robert Guidetti of the Paramus police. The victim, an 18-year-old Paterson woman, refused medical attention, Guidetti said.

The Paterson woman, whose name was not released, was waiting for a parking spot in an underground garage beneath the movie theater around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when Nicolas-King cut her off and pulled into the spot, Guidetti said. They began arguing and Nicolas-King allegedly went back to her car and grabbed the pipe and hit the woman in the back of the head.

The younger woman fell to the ground and they began wrestling, the deputy chief said. The woman punched Nicolas-King, who jumped back into her car and fled.

But Nicolas-King couldn’t escape the mall’s traffic and Officer Nicholas Luciano stopped her car, Guidetti said. She told Luciano that she had thrown the pipe out of the window, said Guidetti, who added that it was later found.

The three Boy Scouts who helped rescue their scoutmaster after he was mauled by a bear in a Morris County cave were hailed as heroes by state officials and the man’s wife on Monday.

While New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife officials said Christopher Petronino never should have entered the cave, they praised the actions of the trio who lured the black bear out with bananas and nuts while the scout leader was still inside, bleeding from wounds to his leg and scalp, on Sunday.

“They probably saved the man’s life,” said Dave Chanda, the Fish and Wildlife director. “That’s what Scouting is all about. It teaches them responsibility, and they showed it in this situation.”

the Ridgewood blogs “anti threat policy”

Ridgewood _police_theridgewoodblog

December 22,2015
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, the policy of the Ridgewood blog is to never share information about posters with anyone friend or foe. There is one major exception and that is with “terroristic threats “. Law enforcement must investigate all “terroristic threats”, failure by local police to investigate “terroristic threats ” could lead DHS and or the FBI to do so. It is all part of the “war on terror” and the broader anti-terror laws .

The Ridgewood blog has an “anti threat policy” ,ie no threats allowed ,so Information is shared with law enforcement is a professional courtesy and for everyone’s safety.

“A terroristic threat is when a person threatens to commit any crime of violence against another person with the intent to terrorize. Because this is a speech based crime, it can often be difficult to determine if a person’s actions constitute a criminal offense.”criminal-law.freeadvice.com/criminal-law/violent…/terrorist-threats.htm

First we determine we are being contacted by law enforcement , if the person requesting information is not law enforcement then no information is shared .
2nd we check to distinguish if there was any threat or it is some bogus claim. If we determine there was no apparent threat made the Police would have to get paperwork like anyone else to take a look .Given there is well over 100,000 comments live on the blog that might take the later half of the 21st century to find anything .

Remember there really is no anonymity on the internet , you IP address gives away your location , sometimes people can invest in stealth IP’s based on
Canadian servers or else where, as some of the blog stalkers do making them more difficult but not impossible to trace.

Most importantly the anonymity of the blog means you take soul responsibility for your own comments , you are not a protected source like with a newspaper.

New Sign at Garber Square Causes Fears of Safety Issues for Ridgewood Drivers

welcome to ridgewood
December 22,2015
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ ,the new LED sign near Garber Square on Franklin avenue has created quite a stir around town to say nothing of the visual noise at that particular intersection. The lights from the trains station, the new sign, the traffic lights, and drivers are supposed to be looking out for bikers entering the bike lane as well . This intersection seems particular difficult and the added distraction of the new sign  has been cause for alarm. Will we have to wait for the first traffic accident due to the sign (lets say snow, rain, etc with glowing lights in your face) and then something can be done about it?

According to the Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld , “The PRIMARY purpose of the new LED sign is to serve as an emergency public information tool to communicate with the public. The village is constantly refining its Emergency Operations Plan, including the Emergency Public Information component of that plan, working in conjunction with Bergen County’s OEM and following all the recommended practices of the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA.  The installation of the sign was carefully planned as part of the village’s overall communications strategy during times of emergency, especially in the event of a widespread power failure where other means of communication are unavailable. ” Roberta goes on ,” the location of this sign was carefully chosen and has been evaluated by the RPD and Village Engineers. Thankfully we have not had a crisis situation since Sandy but If we were in crisis mode this would be a place for residents to come and know the steps that are being taken to address an emergency situation.”

Many residents have again voiced concern that the sign is yet another distraction , A study conducted in 2006 by Virginia Tech for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that anything that takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for more than two seconds greatly increases the risk of a crash.  The same study also concluded that nearly 80% of all crashes involved driver inattention just prior (within three (3) seconds) of the crash.

According to the Village Manager , the cost for the sign was approximately $13,600, inexpensive by Ridgewood standards ,but still these things add up . Whats seems even odder is that the Village has and “Electric Sign ” ordnance which clearly states that any electric sign had to be placed a certain distance from the public roadway. Clearly this sign is in violation of the Villages own ordinance.
