RIDGEWOOD — Congregants at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church plan to spend much of this month extolling the good works of their longtime leader, the Rev. Andy Nelson.
Nelson, who has served the Linwood Avenue church for more than 20 years, has announced his plans to retire. His last day as the church’s ecclesiastic will be June 30.
Over the course of his 32-year career, Pastor Nelson has served at other churches — in Westwood, where he was the assistant pastor at Zion Lutheran Church from 1984 to 1987, and in Verona, where he spent seven years.
Nelson said his retirement is something of a double-edged sword: As he approaches 65, he’s eager to spend time with his new grandson but knows he’ll miss preaching to his congregation.
“I think about the interactions and the people we have become so close to,” the pastor said. “I have done baptisms and weddings for the same family and have been there in the midst of hard times they’ve gone through. … I will miss the everyday experience of bringing the Gospel to people and being a part of their lives.”
Terry Shine, the congregation’s president, said several events have been planned around Nelson’s departure.
Known to most of the rest of the world as football, or “fútbol,” the beautiful game is almost exclusively referred to as soccer in the United States, but many Americans may be surprised to learn that our outlier moniker actually originated across the pond.
Games played by kicking, hitting, throwing or carrying a ball have been around for thousands of years, but in the mid-to-late-19th century many sports—such as baseball, soccer, and American football—codified their rulebooks into the forms we recognize today. Modern soccer was born in 1863, when representatives from several English schools and clubs got together to standardize a single set of rules for their matches. They dubbed their new organization the Football Association, and their version of the game became known as “Association Football.” The word association was used to distinguish their specific sport from other popular games of the day such as “rugby football.”
The word soccer comes from a slang abbreviation of the word association, which British players of the day adapted as “assoc,” “assoccer” and eventually soccer or soccer football. (The habit of adding –er to nicknames in British vernacular is frequently attributed to Oxford students of that period, and can be found in other sporting slang such as “rugger” for rugby.)

Julia Persche of Summit scored the game-winning goal with 3.4 seconds remaining in the Hilltoppers 6-5 win over Ridgewood in the NJSIAA/Investors Bank/The Lacrosse Ball Store Tournament of Champions’ first round.
The goal came just over a minute after a Jordan Ford goal was disallowed because she was using an illegal stick. Ridgewood challenged the legality of Persche’s stick and it was deemed legal allowing Summit to earn a trip to the TOC final three seconds later.
On Thursday a video was released on youtube, which has sense been taken down by the user, that showed a Summit player appearing to adjust Persche’s stick prior to the stick check being called.

We thought we would share an opinion piece that was written by a resident for the “Tips From Town” website.
The recent decision by the Planning Board to approve the amendment of our master plan to allow for 35 units an acre, three times what is currently allowed, has me experiencing a flood of negative emotions, everything from sadness, to fear, to anger.
A recent article in North Jersey.com, notes all three of the builders left the vote with big smiles on their faces, and why wouldn’t they? It feels very much as if the 6 out of 9 members who voted “Yes” had exactly the builders’ satisfaction and approval in mind when they cast their careless vote. Many are arguing they may have had some more selfish motives in mind, but I won’t speculate. The four builders who originally petitioned for the change asked for 55 units/acre, probably hoping for half that, and the Town Planning Board, whose responsibility should be to the residents of Ridgewood, nodded their heads like puppets, and essentially said, “Whatever you need to turn a profit at the expense of our village.” Thank you to the three members who voted no.
I know the town needs to change with the times. I support multi-family housing development, just not at this density. There is no doubt if the Village Council supports the Planning Board’s recommendation, we Ridgewood residents are in for a helluva time. I can barely drive through town now with all the congestion. Imagine what this will do to traffic. It took months to “improve” the underpass at Garber square, what will this kind of massive construction do to the safety and usability of downtown? And, that is just in the short term.

Any development should enhance village’s character
To the Editor:
Those of us who chose to move to Ridgewood made a careful decision and chose a village with character over urbanized cities such as Morristown or Hackensack.
My family has experienced what Ridgewood has to offer young families, and it’s plentiful. However, I have noticed there is an obvious need for housing for empty nesters.
Overdevelopment in town is being driven by corporations’ strong desire to cash in, not enhance our downtown.
Our schools are overcrowded already; overdevelopment will increase taxes because it will increase the number of children who attend our schools, therefore adding more costs to taxpayers.
In order to protect the quality of our schools, the suburban life and the peace and tranquility of our neighborhoods; development should be reasonable and enhance our village character, not drastically alter it. One example of how development can enhance our downtown is providing green space and parking.
Overdevelopment and an unreasonable increase in density in our zoning laws will lower property values for all and hurt our village life. Urbanization of Ridgewood will decrease property values, as well. We must question the true intentions of those supporting special interests rather than protecting our community.

Ridgewood NJ, In response yesterdays stand off situation Chief John Ward issued the following statement on facebook , ” I would like to once again thank our officers for doing an excellent job containing the situation and Sheriff Saudino, Under Sheriff Shortway and Members of the County Regional SWAT, Bomb Squad and Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for another successful joint effort.
Members of our (ERT) Emergency Response Team integrated with county team members flawlessly. Officers from Glen Rock surrounding towns also provided valuable assistance. Without this type of team work and commitment to integrated training events, incidents such as these become very difficult and may not go as well as they have.
Fortunately the young man was ultimately taken into custody and the matter ended without incident or injury. I would also like to thank Chief Benjamin Ramos and the members of the Palisades Park Police for the work on this case and on scene assistance during the event.
Unfortunately we did have to shut down a portion of S. Maple Ave and evacuate many residents for safety concerns. The young man is at Bergen Regional medical center being evaluated and charges are pending. The matter is under investigation.
I would also like to mention and thank Chief Van Goor and Ridgewood Fire, Ridgewood OEM Director Kleiman and Ridgewood ES. With their assistance Capt. Lyons and I were able to handle our responsibilities with both tactical command and Unified Command for the other support services.”
American Pharoah became the first horse since 1978 to win the Triple Crown when he won the 147th Belmont Stakes on Saturday.
Jockey Victor Espinoza pushed Pharoah to the front soon after the race started, and Pharoah outclassed the field, pulling away down the stretch to make history. Frosted finished second, and Keen Ice rounded out the top three.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes champion, American Pharoah began Saturday as a 3-to-5 favorite in the morning betting line, and those were the odds when the race began. He started from the fifth position in a field of eight.

Thanks to the whistleblowing of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden two years ago, the USA Freedom Act passed earlier this week reining in that agency’s massive domestic surveillance program. The program collected the metadata of practically all of the telephone calls that Americans make to each other. Metadata tells the agency to whom, when, where, and for how long you talked on your telephone. While government officials scaremongered that the program was necessary to prevent terrorist attacks, they could point to not a single example how this program stopped any terrorist activity.
The American Civil Liberties Union is circulating a message from Snowden that makes these salient points …
… arguing that you don’t care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say. ….
Ending mass surveillance of private phone calls under the Patriot Act is a historic victory for the rights of every citizen. Yet while we have reformed this one program, many others remain.
We need to push back and challenge the lawmakers who defend these programs. We need to make it clear that a vote in favor of mass surveillance is a vote in favor of illegal and ineffective violations of the right to privacy for all Americans. …
We can’t take the right to privacy for granted, just like we can’t take the right to free speech for granted. We can’t let these invasions of our rights stand.

PARIS (AP) — Allied veterans and families of their fallen comrades gathered Saturday at the U.S. cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach to mark the 71st anniversary of the D-Day invasion that helped defeat the Nazis in World War II.
Visitors and cadets from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland watched as a bagpipe band paraded at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, amid the thousands of white marble crosses and Stars of David of servicemen and women who lost their lives during the invasion.
The invasion began shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944, with a perilous airborne operation led by paratroopers of the “Screaming Eagles” 101st Airborne and the 82nd Airborne divisions.

Montclair is preparing to crack down on violators of its overnight parking restrictions.
During 1st Ward Township Councilman Bill Hurlock’s May 28 ward meeting, a resident living in the vicinity of Montclair State University spoke of the high number of vehicles that park on College Avenue. While the Montclair Parking Utility regularly tickets vehicles during the day, the cars, most owned by students, accumulate on the avenue at night, the resident said.
The resident said she did not want to call police nightly to have vehicles ticketed.
Sgt. Tyrone Williams of Montclair’s Community Policing Unit told the woman she can call the department if she sees fit, but added that the Parking Utility has introduced a night crew to enforce municipal parking ordinances after business hours. There are crews operating two or three nights per week, Williams said.
The busiest time of the day for MPD officers tends to be between 3 p.m. and midnight, according to Williams, during which parking enforcement becomes less of a priority for the police.
If residents should need assistance, the Community Policing Unit can be reached at 973-509-4775, according to Williams. The MPD non-emergency line is 973-744-1234.
Hurlock urged residents to reach out to the police with issues because, under Montclair’s form of government, council members are prohibited from directing Montclair law enforcement to do anything.
While Williams and Officer Frederick Cook, also of the Community Policing Unit, were before the crowd, another resident raised her hand to compliment the department for the performance of the township’s crossing guards this past winter. The guards remained in place no matter the conditions, the resident said.

RIDGEWOOD — An confrontation with an armed, possibly suicidal man that summoned local police and Bergen County SWAT team officers was brought under control without injury, Police Chief John Ward said.
Officers turned out in force after Ridgewood police received a report of a potentially suicidal man in possession of a firearm at 160 South Maple Ave. just before noon, Ward said.
Ridgewood and Glen Rock police, county SWAT and the Community Emergency Response Team evacuated some people from nearby homes.
A hostage negotiator was able to make contact with the man, who is in his early 20s, and police were able to take him into custody without incident, Ward said. A firearm was recovered and the incident remains under investigation.

“I know she loved the painting,” said artist Basil Baylin. He presented Melissa Rivers a portrait of her mother, Joan Rivers, at a book signing held at Ridgewood’s Bookends last month. Melissa has written a book about her mother eight months after Joan’s tragic, sudden death following an outpatient procedure performed in New York City
Basil Baylin is a well-known portrait artist. His commissions include judges, church hierarchy, college presidents and celebrities. He is a much loved artist/teacher at The Ridgewood Art Institute. His Monday evening classes feature oil painting, portraits, still life and compositions for adults. For the last 20 years his art students have remained faithful.
Last year Baylin was asked by friends he shared with Joan Rivers to paint a portrait of the comedian, celebrity and fashion icon. They are all residents of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Baylin paints in his studio on the 26th floor overlooking the Manhattan skyline and Central Park.
New Yorkers as well as people coast to coast mourned Joan Rivers’ tragic passing. The newspapers were filled with her image, but for a portrait artist multiple photographs were the only way to go. To prepare for the Joan Rivers portrait Baylin went to the Library of Photos – two blocks from the main library on 42nd Street. Although newspapers featured approximately 100 photos of Joan Rivers while covering her unexpected death, Baylin felt newspaper photos would not have the depth he wanted. He borrowed three or four photos from the library. The photo of a younger Joan Rivers with her hair up captivated Baylin. He said it was the sharpest of the photos.
The Eleventh Annual Wiffle for Cancer tournament in memory of Nick Currey (RHS 2004) will be held on Sunday, June 7, starting at 12 p.m. at Ridgewood High School. Online registration is now up and running for this year’s tournament at www.wiffleforcancer.org.
All proceeds benefit the Nick Currey Fund for Ewing Sarcoma Research. The organization is also looking for individuals and businesses to sponsor this year’s tournament.
