Former Doctor Guilty of Possessing Assault Weapons in Ridgewood Apartment
file photo by Boyd Loving

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, A former physician from Ridgewood , already convicted of hoarding bomb-making materials, has also been found guilty of having assault weapons in his apartment. A jury reached the verdict regarding the weapons charges on February 1, finding that Roberto Rivera possessed two assault rifles and ammunition seized by police during a raid of his home in November 2012. Authorities also discovered large quantities of chemicals that could be used to make explosives, 10 detonators, instructions on how to make nitroglycerin, and writings regarding a potential attack.

Rivera was found guilty on November 26 of having a destructive device in his apartment. He faces a sentence of up to 26 years in prison on all charges. The verdicts come after three trials, with the first being declared a mistrial in April after a juror independently received information regarding the case. Authorities said that Rivera began researching chemicals and homemade explosives when he moved to Ridgewood after being radicalized by the Occupy Wall Street movement around August 2011. Neighbors recalled seeing a “constant flow” of packages to his home once he started purchasing materials. An investigation began after police received a tip from a neighbor about a conversation with Rivera regarding power outages caused by Superstorm Sandy. Authorities did not identify a target.

Reader says , “The root of the problem is the failure of our Village Council to distinguish between their Narrow interests and the underlying drivers of value for Village residents”

Ridgewood Village Hall theridgewoodblog.net 17

“The root of the problem is the failure of our Village Council to distinguish between their Narrow interests and the underlying drivers of value for Village residents. Their self-interests are reflections of important aspects of Village business; but however important and useful for Village planning, they should not be used in a self-congratulatory list of “accomplishments” as surrogates for the underlying value of the Council’s work. Genuine value creation fur residents requires a Council culture that compels our Governing body to pursue projects that promise to improve life for all residents, whether it be property tax reduction or paving our third world roads – while not treating their own narrow self-interests (Schedler, Elks HQ, Hudson Garage) as ends in themselves.”

Reader says ” The last time West Saddle River Road was Paved My Grandson was 3 ,he is 29 Now”

roadwork

West Saddle River road was supposedly on the paving list for last year but they did the road only as far as the Ridgewood-Hohokus border. This is the road that needs to be widened if we expect 2 way traffic when Schedler is finished. To my certain knowledge the last time it was paved was when our grandson was 3, and now he is 29! How do I know? Because he and I spent almost every good weather day watching them.

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Health Department warns you that he misuse of and addiction to opioids—including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl—is a serious national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare. According to the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), more than 130 people in the United States died every day from opioid-related drug overdoses in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, more Americans died due to opioid overdoses than car crashes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the total “economic burden” of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement. From cities and suburbs to rural America, opioid addiction and overdose is “the crisis next door”. The United States is in the throes of an opioid epidemic, as more than two million Americans have become dependent on or abused prescription pain pills and street drugs. In October 2017, the President of the United States declared the opioid crisis a national public health emergency.
