Adult male jogger found unresponsive in Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, HoHoKus and Ridgewood emergency services personnel rendering aid to an adult male jogger found by a passerby to be unresponsive and not breathing at the intersection of West Saddle River Road and Kingsbridge Lane in Ridgewood shortly after 2:00 PM on Sunday, 04/17. The victim was transported to The Valley Hospital by ambulance. Paramedics from The Valley Hospital were also on the scene. There was no identification on the victim; Ridgewood Police are currently seeking his identity.

Ridgewood NJ, A crew member of a NJ Transit train telephoned police after spotting a man lying on the tracks near the West Glen Avenue train trestle in Ridgewood on Thursday night, 03/10, at approximately 10:30 PM. Responding NJ Transit and Ridgewood police officers found the individual lying between the HoHoKus train station and West Glen Avenue. He was unresponsive when found and pronounced dead shortly thereafter by a paramedic team from The Valley Hospital. It is believed the deceased was struck and killed by a Hoboken bound NJ Transit train.

Investigators will review video footage from at least one (1) train to determine if, when, and where the victim was struck. All train traffic on the NJ Transit Bergen County and Main Lines was delayed while investigators worked at the scene. The body was removed from the scene by representatives of the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office shortly after 1:00 AM on Friday, 03/11. The victim was said to have been a Ridgewood resident

Paramus NJ, A high speed overnight police pursuit that began in Paramus ended when the fleeing driver crashed into a concrete divider on Route 17 northbound in Waldwick. The crash occurred just after 1 AM on Thursday, 02/04 near the on ramp to Route 17 northbound from East Prospect Street, Waldwick. Police officers from Waldwick, HoHoKus, and Ridgewood assisted Paramus officers at the scene.

At least one (1) individual was taken into custody. No police officers were injured in the chase. However, an ambulance was dispatched to the scene and it transported a crash victim, believed to have been the crashed vehicle’s driver, to the Bergen Regional Medical Center. A police officer was observed riding in the back of the ambulance with the victim. A flatbed tow truck removed the wrecked car from the roadway. Two (2) lanes of Route 17 northbound were shut while the investigation and debris clean up took place.

Hold onto your wallets: Property taxes in New Jersey increased by their fastest rate in four years in 2015, with landowners shelling out an extra $537 million.

The hike pushed the average local tax bill to $8,354 for homeowners, up $193 from the prior year, according to data compiled exclusively by the Asbury Park Press. That’s an increase of 2.4 percent, despite a supposed 2 percent cap enacted in 2010.

The jump marks the second straight year New Jersey’s property tax hike has gotten bigger, after three years of slowing growth in Gov. Chris Christie’s first term. Monmouth and Ocean counties fared worse most of the state with tax boosts of 2.6 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively.

The trend undercuts one of Christie’s selling points as he touts his gubernatorial record on the GOP presidential campaign trail. On his campaign website, Christie says property taxes are rising at their slowest pace “in more than two decades.” Growth has grown since dipping to 1.3 percent in 2013.

The new accounting tells a costly different story — in a state where homeowners already pay the highest-in-the-nation property taxes. That burden helped drive nearly 14,000 to sign an Asbury Park Press petition urging elected officials to cut property taxes. The petition came in tandem with Asbury Park Press’s investigation of the tax crisis last fall.

Stay or leave?

Adrienne DiPietro’s property taxes have tripled in the 20 years she has lived in Eatontown. She remains optimistic elected officials will do something about the problem but says “I’m not holding my breath.” She is considering whether she and her husband, Paul, will stay in New Jersey. Both are retirees.

“All of our retirement income, we have to start thinking about this in the next five years or so: Do we want to stay here and keep coughing up that much taxes?” DiPietro said. “Do we want to stay here, because the taxes are only going up and up?”

Ridgewood NJ , The adult female driver of a 4-door Ford Taurus was charged with driving under the influence in connection with a crash on Route 17 southbound in Ridgewood early Sunday morning. The crash occurred just prior to the Linwood Avenue overpass and shut down two (2) lanes of traffic on Route 17 southbound, plus an on ramp to the highway southbound from Linwood Avenue, for almost one (1) hour beginning at approximately 1 AM. No injuries were reported in the incident. HoHoKus and Paramus PD units assisted Ridgewood PD officers at the scene; Ridgewood FD personnel attended to a crash related fluid spill. A flatbed tow truck removed the Taurus from the roadway. The incident reportedly involved two (2) vehicles. One (1) of the vehicles was said to have fled the scene and was later involved in another crash on Route 4 westbound near the Garden State Parkway in Paramus. No word as to whether the driver of that vehicle was charged in connection with the Ridgewood incident.

Washington Twp NJ, The driver, and possibly other occupant(s), of a red compact passenger vehicle could not be located following a crash on the Garden State Parkway (GSP) in Washington Township that was reported via a 911 telephone call at 10:19 AM on Thanksgiving Day. The vehicle left the roadway of the northbound GSP just south of Hillsdale Avenue and crashed into a wooded area within the highway’s center median. Washington Township, Hillsdale, HoHoKus, and Ridgewood PD units canvassed the nearby residential areas but were unable to find any victims as of 12 noon.

A canine unit, believed to be from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, was also deployed to assist in the search. The car is registered to an adult female from Danbury, Connecticut. The heavily damaged vehicle was removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. Northbound and southbound traffic was slowed on the GSP due to heavy rubbernecking near the scene. A trooper from the NJ State Police Parkway Patrol Bloomfield Barracks is conducting the investigation.

Ridgewood NJ, A male second grade student at the Travell Elementary School in Ridgewood reported seeing a man with a handgun at the school’s front door early Thursday afternoon (10/08 @ 12:51 PM), which prompted a full school lock down and response by heavily armed uniformed and plainclothes police officers from several neighboring communities.

A subsequent search of the building and grounds turned up no suspect nor firearm, but as a precaution police also locked down and searched the nearby Benjamin Franklin Middle School. Nothing was found there either, prompting police to signal an “all clear” shortly after 1:30 PM. Police officers from Glen Rock, HoHoKus, Midland Park, and Wyckoff assisted Ridgewood PD units.

Ho Ho Kus NJ, At approximately 9:45 PM on Wednesday, 09/02, a suspicious package was found in the parking lot of the HoHoKus Police Department, which occupies a portion of the HoHoKus Borough Hall along with HoHoKus FD and EMS. As a precaution, the entire building, including fire all fire apparatus and ambulances, was evacuated; all on-duty FD and EMS volunteers stood by at the scene.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad unit, including a explosive detection canine, was summoned to the location. All incoming telephone traffic to HoHoKus PD was rerouted to Waldwick PD and portions of Sheridan, Warren, and Sycamore Avenues were closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The package was inspected and examined by Bomb Squad personnel and determined not to be explosive in nature. The scene was cleared by 11:05 PM.

CHRISTIE ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES NEW INTERACTIVE FLOOD WARNING MAPS FOR PASSAIC RIVER BASIN

MAP DETAILS SIX-MILE STRETCH OF RIVER RUNNING THROUGH WALDWICK, HO-HOKUS AND RIDGEWOOD IN BERGEN COUNTY

Ridgewood NJ, The fourth in a series of online, interactive flood-preparation maps designed to aid emergency management personnel and to inform residents in the Passaic River Basin about flooding events in real time has been launched, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin announced today. The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook Flood Inundation Map, covering a 6-mile span of the river in Bergen County’s Waldwick Borough, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough and Ridgewood, is the fourth map designated for the Passaic River Basin in response to recommendations made by Governor Christie’s Passaic River Basin Advisory Commission.

The map was developed in a partnership between the DEP and U.S. Geological Survey. Fifteen additional maps covering critical areas of the basin will be produced in coming months as part of a cooperative effort between the DEP, USGS and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Flood inundation mapping is among the recommendations in the commission’s 15-point plan for short-term and long-term measures to help mitigate flooding impacts in the basin. Governor Christie formed the commission in 2011 in response to a series of damaging floods in the basin, which covers significant portions of Bergen, Morris and Passaic counties.

Key recommendations of the plan called for better information to help prepare for and respond to flooding emergencies. “The Christie Administration remains committed to addressing flooding issues in the Passaic River Basin through mitigation, property acquisitions, de-snagging efforts and emergency preparedness and response,” Commissioner Martin said. “These easy-to-use online maps offer real-time information to residents about conditions during significant rainfalls and will assist local, state and federal officials in making critical decision to protect the public in the event of flooding.” “This flood preparedness tool highlights how our agencies and local officials are working together to create more resilient communities, and to provide better flood preparedness and responses to flooding,” added USGS Associate Director for Water Bill Werkheiser.

In addition to this latest map, flood inundation maps are being developed for Lodi, Ridgewood and Upper Saddle River along the Saddle River; for Little Falls, Pine Brook, Chatham, Millington and Clifton along the Passaic River. Maps are also being created for Pompton Lakes, Mahwah and Oakland along the Wanaque River; for two locations in Wanaque along the Wanaque River; for Pompton Plains along the Pompton River; for Riverdale and the Macopin Intake Dam along the Pequannock River; and for Little Falls along the Peckman River. Previous flood inundation maps were produced for a 2.75-mile reach of the Saddle River in Lodi; a 4.1-mile stretch of the river in Saddle River Borough; and for a 5.4-mile span of the river running downstream from Ho-Ho-Kus Borough through the Village of Ridgewood and Paramus Borough to the confluence with Hohokus Brook in the Village of Ridgewood.

Monitoring tools include current stream gauges, which provide real-time data via satellites to the USGS and the National Weather Service. The flood inundation map shows where floodwaters are expected to travel. Emergency management officials and residents can use this information to evaluate the potential threat of floodwaters to property and infrastructure.

Agenda: FINAL Public Hearing on the Revised Amendment to the Master Plan that was put forth on April 21st (Revised Amendment is attached)

We need your attendance at the next Planning Board meeting on Tuesday. We are close to the end, but we must still attend the meetings and continue to urge our Planning Board to act cautiously when altering our Master Plan. In our opinion, the Revised Amendment is still not appropriate for Ridgewood and will have long term negative consequences.

The new Amendment takes a one-size-fits-all approach to increasing density, offering the same benefits across all zones, regardless of the context or surrounding location — a risky approach that we do not support.

The new Amendment allows for up to 35 units an acre, with affordable for rent units included. While this is indeed an improvement from the 40-50 units put forth in the initial Amendment, in our opinion, this is still too big of a jump from the 12 units per acre that is permitted now and the 22 units per acre average that currently exists in our down town.

Several properties (West Bergen Mental Healthcare and neighboring lots) that were originally identified as suitable for high-density housing in the first amendment have been eliminated from the revised amendment, which puts Ridgewood at risk for legal action for spot zoning.

In the revised amendment, the much larger Ken Smith property has been lumped into the same zone as the smaller Enclave (Sealfon’s) site. These are two very unique properties and their zoning benefits should differ.

Our Village Planner insists that a minimum density (of approximately 35 units per acre) is necessary to economically incentivize developers to develop their properties and build housing, however, a lower density could be awarded that would still allow developers to build and profit. Ridgewood NJ, Harding Pharmacy & Liquor, located at 305 East Ridgwood Avenue at the corner of North Maple Avenue, will be closing its doors for good on Saturday, November 15. Current proprietor Myron Lesh, who purchased the business in the early 1980’s, confirmed this when spoken to in person today.

Rumors are that a “sandwich shop” will soon occupy the premises. Mr. Lesh will become a pharmacist at an existing pharmacy located in HoHoKus; all Harding prescriptions will be transferred to that location. No word on who purchased the liquor license, which is good only in Ridgewood.

Mr. Lesh was unable to negotiate a new lease with the building’s owner, CLOTCO, Inc. of Boca Raton, Florida, whose principal owner is Emily S. Danson.

Those in the know say that Harding was in business for 50 years at the same location.
