Critical Race Theory Leads to Nationwide Parent Revolt

Ridgewood NJ, the revolt by parents over Critical Race Theory being taught in schools is now nationwide. It is also so universally unpopular that it threatens to reverse the gains that Democrats made with independent voters last year.  A headline in Politico sums it up:  “Moderate and suburban voters share concerns about education changes and say national Democrats dismiss their arguments.”

Did Ridgewood School Board Members withheld Toxic Orchard field noncompliance info from the parents for 6 months?

Ridgewood NJ, in 2007  Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Detected at Orchard School which would require remediation . At the time the often quoted Ridgewood Board of Education Supporter made the comment, “tell your kids don’t eat the dirt” .

American Academy of Pediatrics Recommended that all Children over the Age of 2 Wear Masks when Returning to School

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Board of Education discussed additional ways to disseminate important communications to parents and whether or not masks will be required on school busses. For NJ Transit masks are STILL REQUIRED onboard vehicles and inside enclosed stations, but are no longer required on outdoor platforms or at bus stops.

2020-2021 Ridgewood Student Performance Review

Ridgewood NJ, at the Ridgewood Board of Education meeting  data presented comparing three different school years : 2018-2019 traditional school year, 2019-2020 in person through March with fully remote spring, and 2020-2021 hybrid and remote instruction. During the pandemic, shifts were made to methods of instructional delivery and assessment. The student performance data presented was based on Fountas and Pinell reading levels (K-5), Envision 2.0 math scores (K-5), student grades in all subject areas (6-12), and teacher feedback through summer professional development.

Governor Murphy Signs Legislation to Expand Civics Instruction in Schools

Ridgewood NJ,  Governor Phil Murphy today signed legislation (S854) requiring civics instruction at the middle school level. Currently, New Jersey is one of a minority of states which does not require civics instruction for middle school students. Under the legislation, the New Jersey Center for Civic Education at Rutgers University will be directed to prepare civics curriculum guidelines for local school boards, ensuring that middle and high school students study the values and principles underlying the American system of constitutional democracy, the function of government, and the role of a citizen in a democratic society.

CDC Report : HEPA Air cleaners with universal masking policies appear to be very effective in preventing transmission of COVID

Ridgewood NJ, a new CDC MMWR report explores safety precautions that can be taken indoors to reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2. In particular, the combination of portable high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) cleaners with universal masking policies appears to be very effective in preventing transmission between people in close-contact indoor environments. Previous studies have shown that HEPA air cleaners, portable or built-in, can greatly reduce aerosol transmission in indoor environments.

US CDC released updated guidance for COVID-19 prevention in K-12 schools: Prioritizing a return to in-person learning for students this fall

Ridgewood NJ, On July 9 the US CDC released updated guidance for COVID-19 prevention in K-12 schools, prioritizing a return to in-person learning for students this fall and highlighting the importance of vaccinating as many eligible children as possible. So far, 1 in 3 adolescents ages 12 to 17 have been vaccinated, a number experts are hoping will increase over the coming months. Overall, the CDC recommends school districts tailor their recommendations to local laws and epidemiological situations, tightening or relaxing layered prevention strategies such as mask wearing and physical distancing based on local transmission rates. Some experts criticized the agency for leaving so many decisions up to local officials, saying more specific guidance would be helpful. Others, including officials with the country’s two major teachers’ unions, praised the guidance, calling it “grounded in both science and common sense.” With nearly all of the nation’s school districts set to open this fall, the CDC updated its guidance based on progress in the national vaccination campaign.
