Ridgewood Businesses Report Suspicious Phone Calls threatening Collections

phone-scam

June 12,2015

the staff of the Ridgewood blog, the Ridgewood Police and PSE&G

Ridgewoood NJ, Ridgewood Police report that on Friday June 5, 2015, a business in Ridgewood received (4) suspicious telephone calls from a party identifying themselves as a representative of Public Service Electric and Gas. The caller informed the business owner that they were delinquent paying their bill and threatened to turn off the service to that address if they failed to provide them with MoneyPak cards valued at $569.00. Upon verifying that the call was fraudulent the business owner notified the Ridgewood Police Department. This type of fraudulent call has been on the upswing with the calls frequently originating from outside of the United States. Homeowners and business owners alike should beware of suspicious callers and know that Public Service and other local utilities do not collect unpaid bills in this manner.

PSE&G warns customers about such scams :

Beware of suspicious activity and trust your instincts. If you think you may have been the victim of a scam, please call our 24-hour customer service center at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734). You may also contact your local police department.

Phone scams
Residential and small business customers have reported receiving deceptive phone calls from individuals pretending to be PSE&G employees. The callers demand that customers make a payment within hours using a Green Dot Money Pak, a type of pre-paid card available at pharmacies and convenience stores. PSE&G does not accept these cards.

PSE&G offers a variety of payment options, and would never require a customer to use one specific type of payment. PSE&G customers scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days in advance.

Any customer who has doubts about the legitimacy of a call from PSE&G — especially one in which payment is requested — should call us directly at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).

Email scams
A PSE&G customer has reported receiving a fraudulent email that looked like a bill from the utility. A number of other utilities, including PSEG Long Island, have reported similar scams. The emails contain a link that when clicked infect the customer’s computer with a virus or malware.

The utility is urging its customers to be wary of these types of suspicious emails. Bills sent by PSE&G to our customers via email would be sent from [email protected]. PSE&G would not ask its customers to provide personal information online without first logging into MyAccount.

If you receive this type of email, do not provide any personal information, do not download any attachments, and do not click on any links in the email.

Imposters at your door
Residential customers have reported incidents of strangers posing as PSE&G employees to gain access to their home or to lure them out of their house.
Ask for identification from anyone who comes to your door looking like a PSE&G employee. If you are not satisfied, don’t let the person into your house. Call 911 if you feel intimidated or threatened.

All PSE&G employees — meter readers, servicewomen and men, and office workers — always wear a badge that tells you who we are. The badge, or identification card (ID for short), should look like the ID pictured above. It has the employee’s name, photograph and the PSE&G logo on it.

If you are not sure of an employee’s identity or have difficulty with the badges, call us at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734). A service representative can verify that an employee has been dispatched to your premises.

Ridgewood councilman’s question worth considering

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Councilman’s question worth considering

to the editor:

During the June 3 Village Council work session, Councilman Michael Sedon asked if the salary of Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld should be reduced in order to offset the “six figure” salary of the newly created position of human resources director. Quite frankly, this question had been on my mind, and Councilman Sedon’s idea was, in my opinion, worth considering.

Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld’s reply included that she is not “outsourcing” any portion of her job, and that she is “still responsible” for human resources. Perhaps, but the fact remains that the overall salary now allocated to manage human resources has abruptly increased by at least $100,000.

Moreover, I was quite surprised to hear Ms. Sonenfeld state that her salary is “already down,” which was followed by a comment from Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck that she thinks Sonenfeld is “already the lowest paid manager in New Jersey,” and by Mayor Paul Aronsohn’s response that he “can’t imagine that [reducing her salary] would be the plan.”

Ms. Sonenfeld’s salary, established by Village Council members, is what she agreed to just over a year ago when she was hired. No one forced her to take the job or the salary. For her to now publicly complain that it is so low, so soon after she came on board, and especially when some of her responsibilities have now been delegated to a new hire, is quite disheartening.

Finally, Ms. Sonenfeld’s tone, when she replied to Councilman Sedon, coupled with the quick dismissal of Sedon’s suggestion by three of his colleagues, illustrates that civility is still not consistently practiced under Mayor Aronsohn’s leadership.

Ridgewood chamber’s lunch bunch builds business

A new subset of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce called the Brown Bag Lunch Bunch (BBLB) has formed for women business owners.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” said Ridgewood Chamber Executive Director Joan Groome of the group, which started in 2013.

The idea came about when some chamber members wanted to meet during the day because they were unavailable during regular early morning or evening hours for meetings.

“I thought, ‘This is perfect for a women’s group’ and that’s how it started,” Groome said.

Meetings take place at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Tuesdays.

The purpose of BBLB is to give Ridgewood small business owners a chance to network.

“It’s women helping women in business,” Groome said. “It’s a very dynamic group.”

Lena Antaramian, owner of Live Laugh Love Photography, specializing in children and family photos, has attended meetings for two years.

“Everyone’s energized and it’s great to see women achieving their objectives, making their dreams come true and building their businesses,” she said.

Groome estimated that about half of the members are new or experienced business owners and the rest work for various companies. They have backgrounds in many areas including healthcare, IT, financial advisement and marketing.

During meetings, the women give suggestions, help with referrals, plan events and offer encouragement.

“It’s about real situations and real concerns,” Groome said.

Let’s set the record straight, Mayor Aronsohn

Ridgewood NJ, During Wednesday evening’s Village Council meeting (06/10/2015), Mayor Paul Aronsohn boasted that he and other members the current Council were personally responsible for enhancing the public comment segment(s) of Village Council meetings by increasing the amount of speaking time allotted from 3 minutes to 5 minutes per individual speaker.

In reality, the 5 minute time limit per individual speaker was established by Ordinance 2442, which was adopted on January 11, 1994.  Neither Mr. Aronsohn, nor any other current Village Council member, served on the Council at that time.

On July 11, 2014, a resident became aware that the then in place 3 minute time limit per individual speaker was not consistent with what was established by Ordinance 2442 (a 5 minute time limit), and made Village Clerk Heather Mailander aware of the discrepancy.

Subsequent to receipt of this resident’s advisory, Ms. Mailander notified Mr. Aronsohn and other Council members of the issue and the time limit was adjusted to be consistent with the aforementioned ordinance.

I do so wish that Mr. Aronsohn would stop stretching the truth to bolster his political career.

Fortunately, some of us have been around long enough to remember things as they actually happened as opposed to the “world according to Paul Aronsohn.”

Should Kids be Required to Wear Helmets 24/7 ?

New Bill would extend teen helmet laws to ice skates, scooters
June 11, 2015

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, If politicians have their way changes in the state’s helmet laws for teens could be coming soon to New Jersey.

Ice skaters and scooter riders 17 or younger would join cyclist and be required for the first time to wear helmets under legislation being considered in the state Senate. The bill also increases the helmet requirement age for riding a bike, roller skates and skateboards from 16 to 17.

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee is considering the legislation Thursday. Under current law parents or guardians of a minor who fails to wear a helmet when biking, roller skating or skateboarding face a $25 fine for the first offense. This legislation expands that provision to parents of ice skaters or scooter riders.

Ridgewood woman earns fifth academic degree

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — You might think that after earning her fifth academic degree, Rosa Oppenheim would have taken some time off to relax.

Not this longtime Ridgewood resident and Rutgers Business School professor.

In May, mere days after receiving her third master’s degree, Oppenheim, 65, hopped on a plane bound for Singapore, where she’s spent the last few weeks teaching an international business class.

“I do try to make the most of my time,” said Oppenheim, who chairs Rutgers’ Department of Supply Chain Management and Marketing Sciences. “An old friend remarked a long time ago that my epitaph should be, ‘She never wasted a minute.’”

A continual learner, Oppenheim earned her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Brooklyn’s Polytechnic University in 1970. A year later, she completed her master’s in operations research at the same institution. Then, in 1973, she was awarded a doctorate from Polytechnic and joined Rutgers as an assistant professor.

“Although busy with teaching, research, and a young family, I had always loved being a student and literature had always been a passion that I wasn’t able to pursue in a rigorous, and rigid, engineering curriculum,” Oppenheim said.

So, upon reaching tenure in 1980, Oppenheim decided to enroll in the master’s program in English at Rutgers. She took one course a semester, and in 1985, had a second master’s degree under her belt.
