Paramus NJ, Acting Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced today that the State has filed a lawsuit against New Jersey cosmetology school Capri Institute and, in a separate action filed with the State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling (“the Board”), is also seeking the immediate suspension of the school’s licenses to operate in the state, amid allegations that the school defrauded students, engaged in substandard business practices that financially harmed students, and failed to meet regulations and curriculum requirements for cosmetology schools.

New Jersey Police Can No Longer Arrest Bail Jumpers and Those Who Are No Show in Court

Trenton NJ, Acting Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin today announced a directive instructing law enforcement agencies to no longer, in most instances, subject individuals encountered with municipal court bench warrants with bail amounts of $500 or less to custodial arrest.  Instead, those individuals—who are already generally released after arrest—will now be given notice of a new court date and released on scene.  Attorney General Directive 2022-6 is being issued today in conjunction with Directive #04-22 of the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC).  Together, these policies seek both to avoid the ramifications of arrest for individuals on such outstanding bench warrants and to use law enforcement resources more efficiently and safely.

LaTourette announced today that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has filed suit against a Connecticut-based chemical company that, the complaint alleges, is responsible for damaging New Jersey’s precious natural resources by contaminating groundwater at the site of its former manufacturing plant in Lodi, Bergen County. The community surrounding the Hexcel site has a significant low-income and minority population and is considered “overburdened” under New Jersey’s Environmental Justice Law.

Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs today announced that the New Jersey Bureau of Securities has revoked the registration of a former Wells Fargo agent and investment adviser representative for violating New Jersey’s securities laws. The Bureau found that Mario E. Rivero, Jr. made misrepresentations to at least four of his senior Wells Fargo customers to convince them to turn over at least $529,780 in cashier’s checks, over which he ultimately gained control for personal uses.
