(Reuters) – A ban on pedestrians looking at mobile phones or texting while crossing the street will take effect in Hawaii’s largest city in late October, as Honolulu becomes the first major U.S. city to pass legislation aimed at reducing injuries and deaths from “distracted walking.”
The ban comes as cities around the world grapple with how to protect phone-obsessed “smartphone zombies” from injuring themselves by stepping into traffic or running into stationary objects.
Starting Oct. 25, Honolulu pedestrians can be fined between $15 and $99, depending on the number of times police catch them looking at a phone or tablet device as they cross the street, Mayor Kirk Caldwell told reporters gathered near one of the city’s busiest downtown intersections on Thursday.
This is a waste of taxpayer funds – where is the outrage? Mayor Knudsen and Council majority are raising expensive municipal debt to pay for this just as interest rates rise. Which means higher interest payments down the road for Village taxpayers. To buy a property in the CBD for a corrupt, crony led failed Ridgewood Water? There is no doubt that this is a black hole of greed and corruption. Driven by Mayor Knudsen. Why?
Town Leadership….Denial is not an action plan..The decrepit Town Garage as an Enviromental Hazard has got to be dealt with at some point..especially as those above ground structures fail and create a slum condition.as an abandoned industrial waste site there could easily be a fire or other collapse adjacent to the towns surface parking lot which at peak or event periods also has risks from that failing structure.what is the town doing to force a solution by the owners who possibly are an investment company,?
Ridgewood NJ, Can it get anymore trashy for visitors to see the Rot in central business district? The pavement surface is all cracked and unkept as well.we need to shape up Ridgewood.
Ridgewood Nj,the Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood has just received “Winston Churchill The Late Hour” cigars from Davidoff.
Churchill often appeared in public with a cigar in his mouth, and his cigar habit started at an early age. When Churchill was only 15 his mother implored him to give up the habit, even writing in a letter, “If you knew how foolish & how silly you look doing it you would give it up, at least for a few years.”
She didn’t just rely on rhetoric, though; she turned to every parent’s favorite weapon, bribery. If Churchill would give up smoking for six months, she’d get him a gun and a pony. He agreed to this deal.Eventually, he went back to smoking the large cigars that are now named in his honor.
Ridgewood NJ, On July 17th, NJ lottery started a pilot program to put Quick Draw into selected bars in New Jersey.
They selected not franchised or chain restaurants, but local establishments. As of now, there are only a handful of places in Bergen County. One that was picked and already running is our favorite pub in town Mac Murphy’s.
Quick Draw is basically Lotto w/ 80 numbers to pick. It’s very popular over the border in New York. You can also play any other lottery game there.
“Mac’s” has expanded their outdoor dining area and chef Shamus from the “Old Country” will delight your culinary needs.
Chef Daniel Montoya with over 18 years of experience oversees the kitchen for Radicchio. He prepares classic home style Italian dishes for your enjoyment . He is the same Chef as when Raddicio’s was in Ridgewood originally.
Chef Montoya, will be overseeing the menu at the new restaurant and he and his team take great care in preparing classic pasta and risotto options like their hearty Spaghetti Bolognese, Penne a la Vodka, and Porcini Risotto, mindful of maintaining the same comforting emotional experience these favorites tend to evoke.
For those looking for something outside their familiar tastes, will have plenty of options with hosts of signature dishes featuring bold flavors and inventive twists like the Shrimp and Leek Risotto, Black Seafood Linguine (mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp, calamari, and lobster tail) and Arrabiata Risotto.

Ridgewood NJ, the manager Jennifer Colangelo of One Love Bike+Barre Studio speaks out about the purchase of the former Elks Lodge by Ridgewood Water .
“To my fellow Ridgewood community please take a minute to read about the recent news regarding the purchase of the former Elks Lodge by Ridgewood Water for $1.6M.
There is absolutely NO mention of the fact that there is a current tenant in the Elk’s building – One Love Bike+Barre. As studio manager, I found it interesting that “an agreement had been reached between the village and the Elks organization” without our knowledge. It is extremely disheartening as a Ridgewood resident and small business owner that we have not been informed of this plan and are just finding this out, much like all of you!
This is not just some abandoned building. We have been tenants for over 3 years now and have been running a successful small business and plan to continue, as stated in our lease. A lease that has 19 months left with a 5 year renewable option. So for all intents and purposes, we would have liked to continue growing our community for the next 6+ years!
So, while nothing is set in stone and much of this could just be in the beginning stages, it sounds like our Mayor, the Elks organization and Ridgewood Water have all started making decisions without us. We are hopeful that the town will take into consideration that their Ordinance 3606 will be putting One Love Bike+Barre out of business with absolutely no regard for the owners or it’s current members!”
I agree with the sentiment of the post. Those who say it is “in decline” are just looking for things to complain about. If you are looking for things to complain about, in any situation, you will find them.
Ridgewood is going through growing pains. Many recent stories in the news point to the trend that people, of all ages, want to live in mini-cities. They want a walkable town, transportation to a nearby city, shopping restaurants and cultural events. That is where Ridgewood is heading. Not many towns in Bergen county are ready.
Ridgewood’s CBD has become the largest open air food court in Bergen County. We should embrace that and close Ridgewood Ave between Broad and Maple and make it a walking mall like Washington Street in Cape May, Main Street Charlottesville, Pearl Street Boulder, 4th Street Louisville, the list goes on. Sure NJ Transit bus people may complain, but fix that with a one-way (west obviously) Dayton Street. Changes like this would drive improvements on Franklin (while simplifying the intersections at Chestnut, Oak, Walnut and Cottage Place). It would push parking (or at least parking access) to the perimeter of that space and allow for a real walking village with diverse shops and restaurants to flourish. It would also make The Greek’s planters a non-issue! Who’s with me?
Attorneys first ? now that’s a big surprise….while all this is going down every day ,Glen Rock and 20 miles of route 17 stores offers 3 hours of free unmetered parking because they appreciate the business and don’t take their taxpayers to court because they were on line in the third store supporting a local small business in RIDGEWOOD just to grab some prescriptions and items that the family need to function every week,..Its the mindset here that we have no competition by other towns that is a huge disconnect..do you think that person last in line in parking court will ever come to shop again..unlikely..
Regardless of Cronin’s permission, State law requires 2′ of space between curb and any object so that cars can open doors:
https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/publicat/pdf/PedComp/pedaccomodating.pdf
Where sidewalks are adjacent to a parking lane, an additional 0.6 meters (2 feet) of width is required to compensate for the opening of car doors.
