PEARL RIVER NY ,The busy end-of-summer season is now in full swing and crooks are counting on an unsuspecting public letting down its guard – distracted with summer vacations ending, adults returning to work, students returning to school.

As a result, Orange and Rockland customers are being hounded by a new round of persistent predatory phone calls from phony bill collectors trying to steal their money.

The scheme goes this way: individuals posing as O&R employees call unsuspecting customers and threaten them with the immediate shut off of their electric service if they don’t pay phony O&R bills with Green Dot or other prepaid debit cards.

Coyote Attacks Women in Mahwah

Mahwah NJ, Mahwah Police report that a resident was bitten several times by a coyote Friday evening. Around 6:15 p.m., a woman was walking on Grenadier Drive when she encountered the coyote, which attacked her.

She was able to force the coyote off by striking it with a baseball bat she picked up in a nearby driveway. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for bite injuries. The women remained in the hospital Till Saturday afternoon.

Mahwah NJ, Mahwah Fire Department report a busy week .

Sunday all 5 companies were dispatched to a structure fire at a commercial restaurant on Franklin Turnpike. Crews worked quickly to control the spread of the fire on the roof and confirm the extension into the building. Multiple mutual aid departments were requested due to the heat.

Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced that the licensed operator of the South River Water Department, the public drinking water system for South River Borough in Middlesex County, was arrested today and charged with submitting false water samples and records to a lab that tests such samples for coliform bacteria for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Robert Baker, 56, of Mine Hill, N.J., was arrested early this morning and charged with a violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act, a third-degree crime.  He was charged in an investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice Specialized Crimes Bureau, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, and the South River Police Department.

Ramsey NJ, In a letter hand-delivered to the Board of Public Utilities meeting today, Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips blasts Rockland Electric’s request for a rate hike despite their inadequate storm responses and poor customer service record.

“Rockland Electric’s initial reason for the increase is higher customer satisfaction. I believe customers would be more satisfied by simply receiving higher quality service without a rate increase,” wrote DePhillips (R-Bergen).

Mahwah NJ, After weeks of delays Mahwah has a new police chief . Captain Jaffe was finally appointed Police Chief by a 5-2 Vote . After weeks of tabling the vote on the mayoral appointment for police chief, Mahwah can now officially call Stephen Jaffe, Chief of Police.

The town council has approved the mayoral appointment by a 5-2 vote at tonight’s special council meeting with Ferguson, Ariemma, Paz, Wong and May voting yes and Wysocki and Ervin voting no.

According to the group Mahwah Strong on February 24th, Mayor John Roth appointed Captain Stephen Jaffe to replace retiring Chief James Batelli. The appointment requires approval by the town council.

Mahwah NJ, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of CHARLES J. JANDRIS (DOB: 5/20/1965; married; and employed as a children’s daycare finance director) of 59 Youngs Road, Mahwah, New Jersey on a charge of Possession Of Child Pornography. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti.

In September 2018, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit received information that Charles J. JANDRIS viewed and/or possessed child pornography. A months-long investigation revealed JANDRIS used the Internet to view and possess digital files depicting nude and sexually explicit prepubescent children.
