Ridgewood Fireworks

We need more police for the fireworks. Cars stopped in both directions on Ridgewood Ave to watch the show. Drivers were trying to pass.

After the show families were leaving and flooding across the street. One car kept moving forward, the driver clearly did not want to be held up by pedestrian traffic. A pedestrian got into an argument with him

Reader says Cars are not stopping at Broad Street and Ridgewood Avenue Intersection

CBD_theridgewoodblog

I sat at the top of East Ridgewood Avenue this beautiful Sunday morning enjoying some time on a bench with my granddaughter, drinking iced coffee and a blueberry coolatta. She noticed that cars were not stopping at the stop sign heading south on Broad Street at the Ridgewood Avenue “T” by the train station parking lot. She is 6 years old and was disturbed by this. So we counted 40 cars passing through. Out of 40 cars, 28 of them rolled through the stop sign without stopping. Only 12 actually stopped. And all the while people were crossing on foot, pushing strollers, on bicycles, etc. So dangerous. And mind you, this was on a Sunday morning from about 9:00 – 9:15. What must this be like on a busy weekday when the trains are coming and going, when commuters are rushing about, when people are trying to get their kids to school, and so on. I suggested that we tell a police officer but she was afraid to get the police in trouble for not doing their job of ticketing these drivers.

Retired Ridgewood Police Chief Ward offers Congratulations to New Chief Jacquie Luthcke

Chief_John_Ward_theridgewoodblog

First I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jacquie Luthcke on her new role as Chief of the Ridgewood Police Department.
I would also like to thank every from our community and region who worked with me and our department over the past 35 plus years to help make Ridgewood a safe and wonderful community. I am proud of the successes and the level of excellence the department has achieved over the past six years even in face of many challenges. Our community should be proud of the fact that the Ridgewood Police Department has achieved and maintained national recognition in many areas including; recognition as a flagship /benchmark for excellence organization from the commission on law enforcement accreditation (CALEA), recognition for our community policing youth ambassadors program from the international association chiefs of police association (IACP), and recognition for our community policing and trust initiatives. Regionally the department and its members are recognized for their level of training and preparedness in handling critical incidents as well as their efforts in ensuring that our community is resilient to hazards and threats whether natural or human. While just a few of the department’s many achievements it should be noted that these achievements were due to a truly collaborative effort even in the face historically low staffing levels. These achievements are a testament to the character and competence of the members of the Ridgewood Police Department as well as their love and commitment to their community.
It has been my honor to have served a community I love and will always think of as home. I have been fortunate to have met many wonderful people within our community, many of which remain friends. Words cannot express the pride and love I have for the men and women with whom I have served and who continue protect and serve Ridgewood and the Region.
I look forward to seeing the continued successes of the Ridgewood Police Department and our community under its new leadership.

Chief John M. Ward (ret.)

Ridgewood Residents : Neighboring towns Experiencing High End Auto Thefts

car theft Ridgewood

Criminal Activity Alert – Auto Thefts & Burglaries – S.R. & Neighboring Towns – Remove Key FOB’s and Lock Vehicles

Saddle River and several neighboring jurisdictions have been experiencing high end auto thefts and auto burglaries. Another vehicle was stolen from the Burning Hollow section of town last night. Earlier in the week a vehicle was stolen from the north east section of Saddle River. That vehicle was recovered in Newark. If everyone removes the keys and key FOB’s from their vehicles these thefts will stop. We had an attempt but the criminals were unsuccessful because the key FOB was removed from the vehicle. Locking your vehicle when its in the driveway prevents car burglaries from occurring and deters criminals from our area. These criminals will continue to come to our town if they are successful stealing cars that have the keys or FOB’s left in them.
