Media moves to squelch free speech in attacks on Scott Garrett

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Rep Scott Garrett  finds him self in the cross hairs of a over hyped media attack based on unsubstantiated rumor and innuendo.
We have seen this one to many times were the main stream media template trumps the facts  and continues to report a false story because it better fits their news template .

The anti Garret charge has once again been led by weak inside the beltway GOP members and the Bergen Record . Who’s publisher Stephen Borg, came to Ridgewood for a “civility forum ” in February and told the crowd , ” the whole problem is that since people have found their voice through social media they have come to so many different opinions civil discourse has fallen .Things were so much better when North Jersey Media had a monopoly on public discussion and could always dictate terms .  Borg implied that elites like himself we the only ones qualified to make those decisions. Borg pointed out how this blog and its anonymous posters are the greatest enemy to not only American Democracy  but to the dominance of North Jersey Media Group. While I was rather flattered that the Publisher and President, North Jersey Media Group thought this blog shook the very foundations of civil discourse  and was viewed as the barbarians at the gate , I would suggest the far larger problem might be the totally bias, and slip shot reporting  of his Media Empire. Borg set the tone for the evening which came down silencing critics and reasserting true elitist “we know better  than you ” , so time to be quite .”

The whole thing started when Garrett refused to pay his NRCC dues because of a feud with Speaker Bohner,  but has been morphed into according to unsubstantiated sources Garrett didn’t support the NRCC because  “it actively recruited gay candidates and supported homosexuals in primaries,” .

By the way many in the GOP do not support the NRCC including this blog because despite a landslide win the GOP has failed to deliver  on a single issue and has instead conspired to help the “Obama agenda”.

The Jersey media has run with this tripe of coarse without any effort to substantiate facts .The GOP elites in DC have been joined by the usual suspects like “Blue Jersey ” who have hired a “rent-a-mob to protest at Garrets office in Glen Rock today at 1230  at 266 Harristown Rd.

There have been at lest 20 hit pieces to date citing these unsubstantiated comments reporting them as fact , like the Mike Brown ,hands up fake controversy the facts will eventually get in the way of this witch hunt , but until then expect to hear more garbage from New Jersey media sources and more blame falling on the “mean and uncooperative anonymous bloggers” while the media has a free had to quote anonymous sources .

Jennings Column: Few Republicans Publicly Criticizing Garrett for Gay Remarks

The openly gay chair of the Passaic Republicans is putting pressure on other party leaders to denounce Rep. Scott Garrett’s alleged objections to gay candidates. John Traier said he initially gave Garrett the benefit of the doubt, but Garrett did not return his message: (Jennings/The New Jersey Herald)

Rep. Scott Garrett’s decision to stop supporting a key Republican campaign fund did more than raise questions about his attitudes toward gay people — it highlighted an often-obscured reality about the political machinery that ties congressional power to cash.

Party leaders — for both Democrats and Republicans — know that certain committee assignments give members of Congress access to lucrative streams of contributions from industries that those committees oversee.

Unfair coverage of Garrett

scott-garrett

Regarding “Garrett criticized after refusing to donate” (Page A-1, July 17) and “Waldwick still waiting on honor for slain Marine” (Page L-3, July 17):

The Record featured a one-two punch attack on Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, unworthy of an objective newspaper. The first punch, displayed above the fold on the front page, declares that Garrett has “stayed out of sight” (implication: cravenly) to avoid the “uproar” generated by a handful of politicos and advocates supposedly unhappy about his not donating to a GOP campaign group.

This hit piece seizes on inside-the-Beltway gossip to provide a soapbox for those who do not share Garrett’s positions and views, such as his being (shockingly?) “a Christian whose children were home-schooled” and labors to discredit him as an outlier within his party. Whatever limited merit such one-sided, meandering commentary might have as an editorial, it hardly warrants treatment as news, let alone on the front page.

The second punch thrown is a non-news item in the local section, which lends its soapbox this time to complaints from Waldwick Mayor Thomas Giordano, who bizarrely asserts that Waldwick is “still waiting” because of Garrett. The mayor says Garrett “really dropped the ball” and “hasn’t done much” to have the town post office renamed to honor a local hero, even though the congressman has three times introduced a bill to rename the post office.

In short, The Record publishes parochial gossip, partisan sniping and personal ruminations masquerading as “news” to portray Garrett as overly conservative and ineffec-tual.

Garrett , Boehner feud Spills into Campaign Finance

Scott Garrett defends handling of funds, won’t say if stance on gays played role

THE RECORD

Rep. Scott Garrett broke a silence he’s maintained for nearly a week and said Wednesday that he is refusing to support the House Republicans’ main campaign fund because of a series of disagreements with the leadership of Speaker John Boehner.

Garrett, however, would not discuss a media report that he told colleagues one of his reasons for the dispute was that the campaign fund had supported gay candidates.

That report led to condemnation from Democrats and gay rights advocates, and criticism from a few Republicans aimed at Garrett, R-Wantage, one of the most conservative members of the House and chairman of a powerful subcommittee that regulates the finance industry.

At issue was campaign money, and whether Garrett, who had more than $2.2 million in his campaign account as of June 30, would be sharing some of what he raises with the party so it could elect Republican candidates. In part because of his subcommittee chairmanship, Garrett has raised nearly $1 million in each of the last two election cycles from people and committees tied to finance, insurance or real estate businesses.

Interviewed as he went from his office in the Rayburn Office Building to the House floor in the Capitol for a vote Wednesday night, Garrett said he had a history of voting against the party line.

Garrett, 56, now in his seventh term, mentioned his opposition to Boehner’s reelection as speaker in January and his opposition to an important rule in June that set up votes on a trade package that was a top priority of President Obama.

“You know how I voted for the speaker. You know how I voted on the rule. You know how I’ve not always supported leadership. You know that I don’t necessarily support all the things they do. So it’s somehow a surprise to you that I don’t necessarily support where they spend their money?” Garrett said.

TEANECK — Rep. Scott Garrett told more than 250 people gathered Monday night for a town hall meeting at Congregation Bnai Yeshurun that he will continue his efforts to block the Iran nuclear arms deal, saying it would be detrimental to the security of both the United States and Israel.

He said that the deal was “woefully short” of President Obama’s promises and that “we essentially will be starting a countdown for Iran to have nuclear weapons” in the future. Garrett, a Republican who represents portions of Bergen, Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties, said he hoped enough Democrats would join Republicans to block the deal, but added that he did not expect that to happen.

The meeting echoed portions of a multifaceted national debate, with a large coalition of organizations planning the Stop Iran Rally in Times Square on Wednesday to oppose the agreement while peace groups and others have been arguing in its favor. Iranians also have not been in complete agreement, with hundreds protesting the agreement in Tehran over the weekend.

Congressional Republicans, including Garrett, have been uniformly against it. However, they would need a two-thirds majority in Congress to prevent the agreement from being finalized. Garrett said he voted against that procedure when it was established with bipartisan support this year, adding, “It puts the Constitution on its head.”

Rabbi Steven Pruzansky of Bnai Yeshurun said the agreement placed the nation “on the verge of a historic capitulation.” He added that “Obama’s America is on a collision course with Israel.”

Garrett Blasts Federal Reserve on Lack of Transparency

1027a a6garrett60p

Jul 18, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05), Chairman of the House Financial Services Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s testimony before the House Financial Services Committee today.

“The Federal Reserve has proven itself to be one of the most unaccountable and least transparent agencies in the federal government, and today’s hearing did little to change that reality. From being unresponsive to subpoena requests from our Committee to dismissing concerns over serious problems in the fixed income markets, the Fed is the poster child of a shadow regulatory system that threatens taxpayers and our broader economy. It is an agency in dire need of change, and I look forward to continuing our Committee’s efforts to bring real reforms to the Federal Reserve.”

Rep. Garrett has been a longtime critic of the Federal Reserve’s lack of transparency and its failed monetary policy. He is the author of two pieces of legislation that would shed light on the Federal Reserve’s notoriously opaque operations:

H.R. 113, The Federal Reserve Accountability and Transparency Act of 2015
H.R. 2625, The Bailout Prevention Act of 2015

Garrett to Obama: Prioritize the Extradition of Murderous Fugitives from the Castro regime

New Jersey cop-killer Joanne Chesimard

Jul 17, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) led a bipartisan group of lawmakers in calling on President Obama to demand that Cuban officials extradite New Jersey cop-killer Joanne Chesimard and New York City terrorist William Morales as the United States announces the reopening of embassies in both countries. Chesimard and Morales are convicted felons who escaped to Cuba and were granted political asylum by the Castro regime. Cuban officials have publicly announced they will not negotiate any extradition as a condition for normalized relations between the United States and Cuba.

“It is imperative that your administration ensures that justice is served by making the extradition of Joanne Chesimard’s and William Morales’ a top priority,” said the group of lawmakers in the letter to President Obama. “In recent months Bernadette Meehan, a National Security Council spokeswoman said “the return from Cuba of fugitives from U.S. justice is an issue of long-standing concern to the United States that will be addressed in the broader context of normalizing relations.” However, there has been no evidence of progress in securing the return of these fugitives.”

Reps. Frank LoBiondo (NJ-02), Tom MacArthur (NJ-03), Leonard Lance (NJ-07), Bill Pascrell (NJ-09), and Peter King (NY-02) also signed Garrett’s letter.

Click here to read the entire letter to President Obama.

About Chesimard and Morales:

Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1977. In 1973, New Jersey State Troopers Werner Foerster and James Harper made a routine traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. When the troopers asked the vehicle’s driver to exit the car, one of the passengers, Joanne Chesimard, pulled out a gun and began shooting. During the ensuing firefight, Foerster was hit twice in the chest and Harper once in the shoulder. The injured Foerster was then shot twice in the head—execution style—with his own sidearm.

William Morales was sentenced to 99 years in prison for his participation with the terrorist organization Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional Puertorriquena (FALN). William Morales was a chief bomb maker for FALN, and he has been linked to the 1979 bombing of Fraunces Tavern in New York City, an attack that injured 60 and killed four.

Garrett Votes to End Common Core Coercion

Children_of_the_Common_Core

Jul 15, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) today voted to give control of our children’s education back to parents, teachers, and school boards by supporting H.R. 5, the Student Success Act. The Student Success Act replaces the current national testing system with state-led accountability measures.

“New Jersey has many of the best schools and educators in the United States, yet the parents I speak to are concerned about the negative impact that federal programs like Common Core are having on the quality of our students’ education. For years, Washington has dangled federal funds in front of states and forced them to adopt their one-size-fits-all standards—this has to stop. The Student Success Act is an important first step towards ending the cycle of federal coercion and allowing New Jersey to determine its own success by returning control to our local school boards, teachers, and parents.”

H.R. 5 also includes a provision originally proposed by Rep. Garrett in 2013 that clarifies that the states are not required to take part in any federal education program, nor are they required to adhere to program requirements should they choose to opt out or are not awarded any funds.

Student Success Act (from Committee on Education and the Workforce):

Eliminates the secretary’s ability to promote the adoption of Common Core or any other particular academic standards or assessments by prohibiting the federal government from tying state adoption to the receipt of federal funds or waivers of K-12 education law.
Prohibits the secretary from influencing in any way the partnerships states form and the assessments states choose to use, thereby ensuring decisions to adopt and implement any particular standards or assessments lie solely with state and local leaders.
Excludes authorization for programs the secretary has used to coerce states to adopt his preferred policies, including Race to the Top.
Prevents the secretary from imposing additional burdens on states and school districts through the regulatory process in areas of standards, assessments, and state accountability plans.

House Passes Garrett Amendment to Bar DOJ from Applying Disparate Impact

Analysis of Latest House Action on Disparate Impact

Monday, Jun. 08, 2015, 11:41 AM UPDATED 11:49 AM

By SubPrime Auto Finance News Staff

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. –

Automotive Compliance Consultants insisted that contrary to recent developments on Capitol Hill, the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote to eliminate the Department of Justice’s use of disparate impact does not negate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s use of the legal theory in auto finance cases.

The firm went on to say that the possibility of the CFPB leveraging disparate impact will not disappear even if the bill passes the Senate and is not vetoed by President Barack Obama.

Automotive Compliance Consultants general counsel David Missimer explained that he spotted several media reports highlighting how the House passed an amendment to H.R. 2578, the Fiscal Year 2016 Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Act, that would bar the Department of Justice from using funds for litigation in which the regulator seeks to apply the disparate impact theory.

Missimer went on to mention that his research uncovered discussions about the significance of the amendment to the use of disparate impact by the CFPB to support actions in auto finance.

David Missimer

“The amendment to H.R. 2578 will have no effect on the CFPB’s use of the legal theory in auto finance,” Missimer said. “The reason for this is the amendment is limited, and only bars the use of appropriated funds by the Department of Justice to bring Fair Housing Act enforcement actions that rely on an allegation of liability under the HUD Disparate Impact Rule.”

The bill was introduced by Rep. Scott Garrett, a New Jersey Republican. Garrett stated that in recent years, the Department of Justice has pursued and obtained large legal settlements from finance companies, landlords and insurers in discrimination lawsuits using the dubious legal theory of disparate impact.

“Disparate impact liability allows the government to allege discrimination on the basis of race or other factors based solely on statistical analyses that find disproportionate results among different groups of people, regardless of evidence of actual discriminatory actions or intent,” Garrett said. “Instead of making decisions based on neutral standards of creditworthiness, lenders must consider these demographic factors or risk running afoul of the Justice Department.”

The amendment voted on states that none of the funds made available in the act may be used by the Department of Justice to enforce the Fair Housing Act in a manner that relies upon an allegation of liability under section 100.500 of title 24, Code of Federal Regulations (rule prohibiting discriminatory effect).

“While everyone agrees that discrimination has no place in the lending practices of any respectable institution, the application of disparate impact theory has had devastating impacts on law-abiding businesses who have diligently maintained fair and consistent lending standards,” Garrett said.

“The federal government should be encouraging sound business practices, not punishing those that utilize them,” he continued. “I thank my colleagues for taking a stand for small businesses and reinstating equal protection under the laws as guaranteed in our Constitution by the Fourteenth Amendment.”

While the development might be beneficial to the housing market, Missimer reiterated that it’s not the auto finance players who disagree with the use disparate impact might be seeking.

Scott Garrett to cosponsor bill that would provide continued health coverage and monetary compensation to rescue and recovery workers who were sickened at Ground Zero

Salute to a recruit to Zadroga Act 9/11 aid renewal
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Wednesday, May 13, 2015, 7:05 PM

An atta-boy to New Jersey Republican Rep. Scott Garrett for enlisting on Tuesday as a cosponsor of a bill that would provide continued health coverage and monetary compensation to rescue and recovery workers who were sickened at Ground Zero.

What with so much going on in Washington, Garrett had apparently overlooked the duty until that morning, when a reminder in this space noted that he was the only member of the New Jersey delegation without his name on the measure.

With Dan Donovan, sworn in that night to represent Staten Island and a nub of Brooklyn, Garrett joins budding GOP support for the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

Enacted in 2010 after entrenched Republican opposition, the law authorized spending $4.2 billion on specialized medical care for 9/11 responders, along with compensation. The sum was $3 billion short of the amount sought by Democrats and coverage was cut to five years.

Without congressional renewal, thousands of suffering Ground Zero laborers will lose critical health care assistance. In control of both the House and Senate, the Republicans will be crucial to preventing such a catastrophe.

That’s why having Garrett on board helps build momentum and why Donovan gets a thumbs-up for making co-sponsorship his very first legislative action.

Garrett said he was looking forward to what his office characterized as his first official town hall.

“There is nothing more important to me, as the representative of New Jersey’s 5th District, than hearing from my constituents. I look forward to having a thoughtful discussion about the issues affecting our state and our country on Thursday night,” Garrett said in a statement.

HERALD STAFF REPORT
newsroom@njherald.com

U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, R-5th Dist., will answer questions on Thursday at what is believed to be his first town hall since taking office in 2003.

Garrett, a Wantage resident, will make an opening statement and take questions from the audience.

The town hall will be held at the banquet hall at Lafayette House Restaurant, in Lafayette, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The New Jersey Herald, in an editorial board meeting with Garrett last fall, asked if he would be willing to hold a town hall meeting.

“Congressman Garrett said if we would come up with a venue and an agreed-upon date, he would be there,” Herald Executive Editor Bruce Tomlinson said. “We accepted the challenge and after some exchanges got it scheduled.”

Tomlinson said this event is an extension of the Herald’s role of providing information to its audience.

“We are happy to be able to facilitate this first-ever town hall meeting for constituents from the 5th District to ask questions directly to their congressman and hope they take advantage of it,” Tomlinson said. “We also trust that after this inaugural outing, he will continue to schedule more such events on his own.”

Email questions

Those who are unable to attend the event but wish to submit questions for Garrett can do by emailing them to the New Jersey Herald by noon Thursday atnewsroom@njherald.com. Submissions should include “town hall meeting” on the subject line and also include the person’s name and town. Tomlinson said submitted questions will be worked in as time allows.

Top veterans of the Clinton and Obama administrations are lining up to help raise money for Josh Gottheimer of Wyckoff, a former speech writer for President Clinton who is preparing to run for Congress next year against Rep. Scott Garrett.

Gottheimer, 40, raised more than $219,000 in March and was set to add to that on Monday night at a fund-raiser at the Washington, D.C., home in of Patti Solis Doyle, a former adviser to then-first lady Hillary Clinton and to President Obama’s campaigns in 2008 and 2012.

Other names among the 28 hosts for the fund-raiser include Mack McLarty, who was President Clinton’s chief of staff; Julius Genachowski, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission; Sandy Berger, former national security adviser to Clinton; Paul Begala, Clinton political strategist and media commentator; and Jennifer Palmieri, communications director of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

The outpouring of support for a challenger is unprecedented this early in the campaign cycle in the Republican-leaning 5th District, a place Democrats in North Jersey have repeatedly said they could win if a candidate could raise enough money to define Garrett on New York television.

Gottheimer is a North Caldwell native who moved back to North Jersey with his family three years ago. A corporate strategist for Microsoft, he previously worked for the FCC and on the presidential campaigns of John Kerry in 2004 and Hillary Clinton in 2008.

Scott Garrett: Cuba Should Not Be Removed from Terrorist Sponsor List

unnamed1

Apr 14, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) today issued the following statement after President Obama announced that he will remove Cuba from the state sponsors of terrorism list:

“For over half a century, the Castro regime in Cuba has violently oppressed their people under a totalitarian regime, aided anti-American insurgencies, illegally shipped weapons, and continues to harbor murderers and terrorists.  Today’s announcement by the Obama Administration that they will remove Cuba from the state sponsors of terrorism list is misguided, dangerous, and offensive to the families who have been torn apart because of Cuba’s active participation in terrorist activities.  The Castro regime has refused to make a single concession or good faith effort to change the way they treat their people or denounce their history of terrorism.  There is no proof that Cuba is no longer a hostile threat to the interests and security of the United States.”

Garrett has been a longtime critic of the Cuban regime and has repeatedly called on their government to extradite New Jersey cop-killer Joanne Chesimard and terrorist William Morales so they can face justice for their crimes.

Cho bows out of 2016 CD 5 race

By Mark Bonamo | 03/08/15 4:51pm

HACKENSACK – Democrat Roy Cho, the Korean-born attorney who ran an insurgent campaign in 2014 to unseat incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5) in New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District, announced his decision on Sunday not to run again for the congressional seat in 2016.

“I’ve decided that I’m going to take a pass on running in 2016,” Cho, 33, of Hackensack, told PolitickerNJ on Sunday, noting that he just started a new job at the New York office of the Chicago-based law firm Winston & Strawn as part of its private equity group. “This is a professional decision. After talking to my family, friends and supporters, I think it’s important for me to focus on the professional side of the ledger.”

Cho’s campaign against Garrett, a conservative Republican now in his seventh term, at one point appeared close. A combination of a well-run, grass-roots campaign, a Garrett gaffe in a campaign flyer about the congressman’s actions after Hurricane Sandy and some powerful fundraiser friends got Cho within five points of Garrett with three weeks left in the campaign.

Although Cho raised around $1.3 million for his campaign with no help from the national Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), money proved to be decisive in the campaign’s final weeks. According to Cho, Garrett spent $2.2 million of his campaign war chest to defeat Cho, including $1.3 million in the campaign’s last week, contributing to the eventual 55 percent to 43 percent margin of victory in favor of Garrett.

“This was the most expensive race the Fifth District has even seen, and the most money [Garrett] has ever spent against anybody,” Cho said. “What we saw in this election is the impact of money on American politics, whether it’s about local or federal races. Campaign finance is an issue that I want to keep talking about.”

Conservative lawmakers form House Freedom Caucus

BY SUSAN FERRECHIO | JANUARY 26, 2015 | 10:40 AM

A group of the most conservative House lawmakers have formed a new caucus advocating many of the principles supported by the Tea Party movement.

Reps. Scott Garrett, Jim Jordan, and others announced the establishment of the House Freedom Caucus, which the lawmakers said will promote “an agenda of limited, constitutional government in Congress.”

In addition to Garrett of New Jersey, and Jordan of Ohio, the new caucus includes Reps. John Fleming of Louisiana, Matt Salmon of Arizona, Justin Amash of Michigan, Raúl Labrador of Idaho, Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, Ron Desantis of Florida and Mark Meadows of North Carolina.

“The House Freedom Caucus gives a voice to countless Americans who feel that Washington does not represent them,” the lawmakers said in a statement. “We support open, accountable and limited government, the Constitution and the rule of law, and policies that promote the liberty, safety and prosperity of all Americans.”
