Hawthorne NJ, a late Monday afternoon, 05/06, crash on Route 208 southbound in Hawthorne involving a private ambulance and an SUV resulted in both SUV occupants being transported by a Hawthorne EMS ambulance to a local hospital. The SUV somehow became wedged between a bridge abutment and the ambulance after it veered off of the highway and up a steep embankment. The right travel lane and shoulder of the highway were both closed, causing major traffic delays through the area. A flatbed tow truck removed the heavily damaged SUV from the scene. The ambulance, which appeared to have been patient free, drove away on its own power. Hawthorne Police, Hawthorne Fire Department, and Hawthorne EMS responded to the incident.

Trenton NJ, the New Jersey Supreme Court issued a decision today invalidating a state employment regulation that required state workplace investigators to request victims and witnesses in harassment investigations to keep all aspects of the investigation confidential.  The Court held that the challenged regulation, N.J.A.C. 4A:7-3.1(j), was unconstitutionally overbroad and struck the relevant portion concerning the confidentiality directive.  The decision is a major victory for employees and their rights to speak freely and openly about issues of workplace discrimination and sexual harassment.

There has been much talk about “non-native” trees at Schedler, and this description is being used as justification for clear-cutting what is currently a beautiful woodsy area.  These trees, many of which are very tall and well-established, are producing oxygen, absorbing pollutants from the highway, reducing the amount of standing water, providing shelter for birds and animals, decreasing noise pollution for residents in the area, and are just living their lives.   The “non-native” excuse is just ridiculous – it is a sorry rationalization for a terrible plan.
