Ridgewood NJ, Henrietta Lacks (August 1, 1920 – October 4, 1951) was an African American woman whose cells, known as the “HeLa” cells, have played a pivotal role in scientific and medical research. Henrietta Lacks was born in Roanoke, Virginia, and she later moved to Maryland. She passed away at the young age of 31 due to cervical cancer.

Bulb Ban Goes Into Effect

Ridgewood NJ, a Department of Energy rule requiring new lightbulbs to have a minimum brightness of 45 lumens went into effect in the United States on Tuesday, effectively banning incandescent lightbulbs. The ban does not affect currently owned lightbulbs and excludes several specialty bulbs used in refrigerators, plant lights, and others (see full list).

Tractor-trailer Crash Takes Out Overhead Sign , Spills Lemons on the Roadway, Shutting Down Route 17 in Mahwah

Mahwah NJ, All lanes on Route 17 North in Mahwah have reopened following a crash involving a tractor-trailer and another vehicle. The two left lanes on the southbound side remain closed north of Route 202.
That crash happened around 10 a.m. Wednesday. The truck overturned, spilling lemons all over the highway and causing damage. Details about what led to the crash remain unclear, but it appears the tractor-trailer and another vehicle collided.

Ridgewood Pedestrian Plaza Suspended for the Month of August

Ridgewood NJ, according to Village Manager  Keith Kazmark  the pedestrian plaza in Ridgewood is being suspending for the month of August.
In a Facebook post Kazmark said , “With overwhelming support from our community, the Ridgewood Village Council brought back dining corrals, year-round outdoor dining and the pedestrian plaza this summer. Initially, the response to the pedestrian plaza was very good, with many people coming out to support it. Most importantly, it was well received by the community and our businesses.

New Jersey State Board of Education Puts Identity Politics Over Parents

Trenton NJ, Senators Anthony M. Bucco and Michael Testa said that the State Board of Education is focused more on advancing identity politics than building stronger relationships between parents and teachers in response to the board’s vote to approve a proposal to remove “equality” in the “Managing for Equality and Equity in Education” Chapter of New Jersey’s Administrative Code. The board should be more respectful of parental rights, the senators said.

Trenton NJ, Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver has died after being hospitalized for an undisclosed medical issue, according to Gov. Phil Murphy’s office.
Oliver had been serving as acting governor prior to her hospitalization while the governor was away in Italy with his family. He will be returning to New Jersey as soon as possible.
