“Veterans for Garrett” Debuts Leadership Team

Hackensack NJ,  Rep. Scott Garrett today announced the Veterans for Garrett coalition and unveiled its district-wide leadership team. The members of Veterans for Garrett are all actively involved in various veterans’ affairs and veterans’ organizations, and include Roy Bud, a Bergen County Vietnam Veteran; Frank Crotty, a Bergen County Vietnam Veteran; Fmr. Assembly Majority Leader Paul DiGaetano, United States Navy; William Dobbins, a Warren County Vietnam Veteran; Senator Michael Doherty, Captain United States Army; Patty Green; Col. John “Jack” O’Neil (Ret.); Lt. Col. Larry Peterson (Ret.); and Bob Salvini.

“The sacrifices made by these brave men and women are the reason we are able to enjoy our freedom and liberty today,” said Rep. Scott Garrett. “I am incredibly honored that the members of this coalition have agreed to join me in this re-election effort so that I may continue to serve those who have served our state and our nation.”

In an open letter addressed to fellow veterans, Veterans for Garrett said, “We are dedicated to the appropriate recognition of all veterans for the sacrifices they have made on behalf of our great nation and to assuring prompt and proper medical care for them upon their return to civilian life. Thus, we are proud to announce our support for Congressman Scott Garrett and it is our hope that he will be able to count on your support as well.”

The letter also detailed Congressman Garrett’s impressive record of working vigorously on behalf of America’s veterans, which includes the following:

Scott Garrett helped lead the New Jersey Congressional delegation in ensuring reduced waiting time for medical attention and to improve the care provided by the Veterans’ Administration.
Scott Garrett has strongly supported the Veterans Choice Program allowing veterans to seek care outside of the VA system if they choose.
Scott Garrett co-sponsored the VA Accountability Act, authorizing the discharge of employees at the VA for poor job performance or misconduct.
Scott Garrett is a co-sponsor of the Toxic Exposure Research Act which establishes a national VA center to study and treat the long-term problems experienced by veterans and their children as a result of exposure to toxic chemicals.
Most significantly for veterans in Sussex and Warren Counties, New Jersey, Scott Garrett has been the moving force behind the VA’s decision to open a new VA Clinic in Newton, making VA care much more accessible to veterans in Northwest New Jersey.
On behalf of the first responders suffering from medical conditions related to the September 11th terrorist attacks, Scott Garrett is a proud co-sponsor of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

Millennials: the subjects of countless think pieces about how the generation is leaving its mark on everything from politics to real estate to workplace culture.

Now, their footprint is becoming visible in New Jersey’s public schools, where experts say their tendency to delay marriage and parenthood is having a measurable impact on school enrollment.

For three years in a row, the number of students in New Jersey’s public schools has declined slightly and begun to level off — a pattern James Hughes, dean of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, attributes to millennials’ choices.

This Labor Day, let’s acknowledge why our job-creation machine is broken

It’s Labor Day weekend, and despite unemployment under 5% and nearly 15 million private-sector jobs created since February 2010, nobody’s celebrating.

Workforce participation is stuck near historic lows, six million people are part-timers but want to work full time, and wage growth remains subdued.

Both presidential candidates have talked a good game about jobs and the economy, but neither addresses the real problem. The U.S. job-creation machine—once the envy of the world—is broken, because American corporations cannot create steady, well-paying jobs here in the USA while also providing maximal returns to their investors, who are really in charge.

Obamacare Insurance Markets on Verge of Collapse

Citing the financial unsustainability of Obamacare, both the insured and insurers are fleeing Obamacare in increasing numbers, leaving President Obama’s takeover of the nation’s healthcare system on the verge of collapse.

The administration has claimed Obamacare — officially designated the Affordable Care Act — to be a great success, insisting that 20 million previously uninsured Americans now have insurance. But according to a report at The Guardian, that “success” comes at the expense of all the features that were supposed to make the law sustainable.

President Obama and his cohorts imagined that since Obamacare was to be compulsory, millions of healthy young Americans would immediately sign up, and the massive influx of cash paid into the system as insurance premiums would help pay for the higher costs in care doled out to older, sicker enrollees.

FDA Orders Antibacterials Removed From Consumer Soaps

Say goodbye to those “antibacterial” soaps. The Food and Drug Administration says they do little or nothing to make soap work any better and said the industry has failed to prove they’re safe.

Companies will have a year to take the ingredients out of the products, the FDA said. They include triclosan and triclocarban. Soap manufacturers will have an extra year to negotiate over other, less commonly used ingredients such as benzalkonium chloride.

“Companies will no longer be able to market antibacterial washes with these ingredients because manufacturers did not demonstrate that the ingredients are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections,” the FDA said in a statement.

Ridgewood NJ, West Bergen Mental Healthcare, a non-profit counseling and psychiatric center, announced a new Social Anxiety Group for high school teenagers. The Group is scheduled to begin in the Fall, 2016 at the West Bergen Center for Children and Youth, One Cherry Lane, Ramsey, NJ. Participation is limited; if it becomes full, West Bergen can place your child on a waiting list or consider starting another group. The Social Anxiety Group will focus on understanding the cognitive, physical and behavioral features associated with social anxiety and applying this knowledge to exposure situations that the students will practice in the group as well as specific social environments. Parents will be involved at the beginning and at specific junctures throughout. Please note: parents and teens will need to commit to weekly sessions for a six-month period to complete the entire program.

Ridgewood Water : Stage 2 watering restrictions still in effect

Although Stage 2 watering restrictions will continue to be in effect, Ridgewood Water will begin to consider waivers beginning on September 6th.

The following guidelines are the basis for granting individual exceptions to restrictions on outdoor water use:

  • New trees, shrubs, and perennials – Waivers may be granted, but will be limited to use of soaker hoses or drip irrigation on Tuesday,Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only.  No automatic irrigation will be allowed for this purpose.
  • New lawns (sod or seed) – Waivers may be granted for automatic irrigation on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only.

Applications are available on the Ridgewood Water website atwater.ridgewoodnj.net. Your completed application and documentation may be submitted in the following ways:

Ridgewood NJ, Our upcoming concert season “Musical Works of Art” will begin November 20 th with a 4:00 pm performance of Brahms’ beautiful Ein Deutsches Requiem. Our Summer Sing on August 15 and 29 featured this magnificent work, giving interested singers the chance to join their voices with Pro Arte and experience the joy of choral singing. Our March 26 th concert at 4:00 pm will feature a selection of Opera Choruses, which will include collaboration with a high school chorus. Our final concert, June 10 th at 8:00 pm will be an all-Bruckner program featuring 6 Motets and his Mass in E Minor. Interestingly, Bruckner is known mostly for his symphonies, but he was a church musician as well, and his music for the Roman Catholic liturgy is considered to be amongst the finest of the last 150 years. We are excited to present our 2016-2017 season and remain deeply grateful for the support we receive from our funders and audience members. We look forward to seeing you at our concerts and events!

The Pro Arte Chorale, a 50-member volunteer chorus based in Ridgewood, is committed to enriching the lives of its members and its audience by exploring many musical traditions. The Pro Arte Chorale welcomes voices in all sections. We will be hosting auditions throughout the season, starting in early September on Monday nights @7pm. Singers interested in auditioning will be asked to prepare a piece of music that best highlights their voice, and will also be tested for range and reading ability. He has a distinguished background in sacred music, having served as Acting Director of Music at historic Trinity Church, Wall Street from 2009-2010 and Cantorial

Soloist at the majestic Temple Emanuel in New York City from 2009-2013. Maestro Fox has given master classes and clinics at Dartmouth College, Julliard School and Yale University, where he served for two years as preparatory conductor of the Yale Schola Cantorum. He graduated a Senior Fellow with High Honors from Dartmouth College and with Distinction from the Royal Academy of Music, London, where, in 2010, he was named an Associate for ‘remarkable achievement in and contribution to his field in music’. Recognized as a leader in his generation of conductors, Steven has been called an “esteemed director” by The New Yorker, “visionary” by BBC Music Magazine, and ‘a conductor to watch’ by Seen and Heard International.

The Pro Arte Chorale is sponsored in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts. All performances are held in ADA compliant venues with handicapped accessible parking, ramps, elevators and restrooms. Large print programs are available.

Vetoes Legislation That Would Impede Economic Gains and Hinder Garden State Businesses

Trenton, NJ , Taking action to protect New Jersey’s economic future, Governor Chris Christie today vetoed Assembly Bill No. 15, which would have raised the minimum wage to $15 per hour by the year 2021. Three years ago, New Jersey residents voted to raise the minimum wage to $8.25, along with annual adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This bill would have made New Jersey only the third state to adopt a $15 minimum wage.

“Despite having a constitutional mandate in place, the legislature now wants to increase the minimum wage by almost 80 percent just three years later,” said Governor Christie.  “While this bill’s proposed increase surely is responsive to demands from Democrat legislators’ political patrons, it fails to consider the capacity of businesses, especially small businesses, to absorb the substantially increased labor costs it will impose, killing jobs and erasing gains of more than 275,000 private sector jobs since 2010. I cannot support a bill that undermines the positive results we have achieved in New Jersey and I am returning A-15 to the legislature with an Absolute Veto.”

Business owners would face added expenses from this substantial wage hike through increased payrolls, taxes and supply costs, leaving them with these undesirable options: laying off workers; reducing employee hours; raising prices; leaving New Jersey; or closing altogether.  Other states and cities ramping up to a $15 minimum wage – California, Seattle and Washington, D.C., for example – are already seeing those negative economic impacts, from fewer jobs to increased costs for goods and services on college campuses, in restaurants and in the manufacturing sector.

Similar outcomes in New Jersey would be a significant step backward on the road to economic recovery and an affront to all of the accomplishments of our private-sector businesses over the past six-and-a-half years.

From offering $380 million in unemployment insurance tax relief to merging the State’s economic development incentive programs through the Economic Opportunity Act, Governor Christie has fought to make New Jersey more competitive and to encourage businesses not only to move to the Garden State, but also to stay here, and to expand their operations and hire new employees.

Governor Christie continues to focus on creating better paying, middle-class jobs in innovative sectors and through small business growth while continuing to build on New Jersey’s economic momentum.

Trump to Mexico Wednesday for private meeting with president

I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow.

The Washington Post first reported Tuesday night that Trump was considering the last-minute trip to Mexico City. Trump tweeted confirmation shortly before he took the stage for a rally in Washington state Tuesday night, but he did not mention the visit in his remarks.

Pena invited the mogul to visit him and discuss campaign issues, unidentified sources told the Post. The effort was reportedly facilitated by his campaign’s CEO Steve Bannon.

The Republican nominee has been publicly wrestling over whether to soften his immigration position and essentially reverse the hardline stance that he carried him through the primary.

Trump is scheduled to give a major immigration speech Wednesday night in Phoenix, during which he is expected to clarify his position. The trip to Mexico will be sandwiched between that speech and a fundraiser he’s slated to attend in California that morning.

The economic argument above is all I needed to counter your complete fantasy of $1MM houses being in great demand, but let me also comment on the rest.

2. The 40 years that you claim to have been in Ridgewood for happened to be the 40 years when the financial sector exploded in size, and NYC being the financial center benefited tremendously. Additionally, home ownership steadily increased to an all time high in 2004. Unless you have not read the news for 8 year now – all of that is GONE. That is history. Finance is rapidly shrinking, homeownership is at lower than it has ever been since 1984. This despite mortgage rate being lower than it has been in forever.

3. Those ‘arbitrary rankings’ are what new homeonwers make their decision based on. And who will I believe – what multiple magazines claim or what you claim? And how is it that school districts like Short Hills, West Windsor and Tenafly are unaffected by the randomness of those surveys?

4. If taxes were already ‘high’ shouldn’t they stop rising then? What is the logic of already ‘high’ taxes going even higher – for no additional services whatsoever?

5. For a vast majority of people without money to burn, it is a rational decision based on their own income and costs vs. quality of services. I just pointed out that the equation is very unfavorable right now when it comes to Ridgewood.

6. The long view is that the state of NJ is bankrupt given how horribly underfunded its pensions are. Militant union will not let their benefits be haircut. So you are looking at combination of significantly higher taxes, fewer services and constant disruptions from striking unions. Math is math. The bill will come due – the can can only be kicked down just so much further down the road!

FBI Chief Responds to Concern Over Cyberthreats to US Election System

The FBI has responded to recent concerns about U.S. voting systems being targeted for cyberattacks as Election Day approaches, saying the agency takes the threat “very, very seriously” and is working to “equip the rest of our government with options.”

FBI Director James Comey addressed the issue while speaking to government and private-industry experts attending the Symantec Government Symposium in Washington, D.C.

“We take very seriously any effort by any actor,” he said, “to influence the conduct of affairs in our country, whether that’s an election or something else.”

His comments come one day after news surfaced about FBI warnings to the states that hackers had infiltrated one state board of election and targeted another.

Three days ago, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., sent a letter to Comey, expressing concern that “the threat of the Russian government tampering in our presidential election is more extensive than widely known and may include the intent to falsify official election results.”

In late June an “unknown actor scanned a state’s Board of Election website for vulnerabilities” and, after identifying a security gap, exploited the vulnerability to conduct a “data exfiltration,” or unauthorized data transfer, the FBI said in a recent bulletin.

Earlier this month, hackers used the same vulnerability in an “attempted intrusion activities into another state’s Board of Election system,” the FBI said.
